Ha iniziato a studiare la chitarra a dieci anni e si diplomato al Cleveland Institute of Music di Cleveland, dove già a tredici anni ha suonato nel quartetto di Bob Hardaway ed in altri gruppi locali. Nel 1955 si è trasferito a Los Angeles, dove ha approfondito gli studi anche nella chitarra classica studiando con Vincent Gomez. Inizialmente ha suonato con Ken Hanna, Dave Pell, nell’orchestra di Stan Kenton, con Hart Babasin e nel quintetto di Chico Hamilton. Nel 1956 è entrato a far parte del trio di Jimmy Giuffre con il quale è rimasto sino al 1960. Ha suonato con Ben Webster, con Bill Evans e con Paul Desmond dal 1959 al 1965, con Lee Konitz, con Sonny Rollins e con Art Farmer. Durante una tournée europea ha registrato importanti album insieme a Bob Brookmeyer, Jim Atlas e Ralph Pena. Ha avuto modo di accompagnare Ella Fitzgerald, ed incidere con Bill Perkins, Gerry Mulligan, Gary McFarland, Ron Carter, Ornette Coleman, John Lewis, Sonny Stitt, Zoot Sims, Red Mitchell, George Shearing, Itzhak Perlman e con Michel Petrucciani, con il quale ha fatto una meravigliosa tournée in Europa. In seguito ha prediletto esibirsi con un suo trio. E’ considerato uno dei più importanti chitarristi d’avanguardia. Musicista in continua evoluzione senza però ripudiare la tradizione, ma anzi sviluppandola. Egli rappresenta il summa del chitarrismo moderno. Ha prediletto sempre gruppi dall’atmosfera quieta, musicista dalla grande tecnica, dalle sfumature sottili piene di swing e dal lirismo controllato, per il quale la cosa più importante è il suono. Con tutti quelli con cui ha collaborato lo ha fatto sempre in modo pertinente e inventivo. Ha ricreato con la sua musica l’atmosfera cool degli anni ’50. Uomo schivo e modesto resta un musicista affascinante e raffinato. Anche buon compositore, ha scritto delle ottime composizioni per complessi da camera, ispirate alla musica dotta europea. Soprannominato dagli inglesi “The Quiet American”.

Keyport, New Jersey.6/11/1901. – New York, 28/2/1968.
Cantante ed attrice afroamericana. La sua carriera è stata divisa tra Broadway, Hollywood, cabaret famosi e sale di registrazioni. Dalla voce molto aggressiva vicina al blues classico. E’ stata scelta personalmente da Rogers e Hammerstein per interpretare il ruolo di protagonista nello spettacolo “South Pacific”. Ha frequentato la Julliard School e nel 1930 ha fatto parte del famoso Hall Johnson Choir. Nel 1950 è stata la prima nera americana a vincere un Tony Award. Ha avuto ruoli da protagonista in molti famosi musical a Broadway.

Si è trasferito a New Orleans dove ha debuttato nell’orchestra di Kid Ory e nel 1918 si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha sostituito il fratello Tubby nell’orchestra di Lawrence Duhè che si esibiva al De Luxe Cafè. Gruppo che poi ha costituto il nucleo dell’orchestra di King Oliver. Ha lasciato Oliver nel 1922 è tornato a Chicago con Jimmy Noone e poi è andato a Los Angeles con Kid Ory. Successivamente ha fatto parte del gruppo di Papa Mutt Carey dal 1927 al 1932, poi con Winslow Allen con il quale è rimasto sino al 1942. Dopo una breve parentesi militare è stato per un breve periodo inattivo, poi ha ripreso l’attività con Kid Ory con il quale è rimasto sino alla fine della carriera. In seguito ha suonato sporadicamente nella New Orleans Jazz Band.
HALL RENE, JOSEPH LIGHTNIN. (G)
St.Louis, Missouri. 26/9/1911. – Los Angeles, California. 11/2/1968.
Chitarrista, banjonista, trombonista e arrangiatore. Nel 1927 come banjonista ha fatto parte del gruppo di David Jones e Lee Collins al club LaVida di New Orleans. Nel 1932 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Sideny Desvigne con il quale ha lavorato sui battelli fluviali. Nel 1933 ha registrato con Joseph Robichaux. Ha suonato con la territory band di Ernie Fields a Tulsa in Oklahoma. Nel 1942 è andato con la Jeter-Pillars Orchestra a sostituire Floyd Smith al Club Plantation di St.Louis. Come trombonista ed arrangiatore ha lavorato con Earl Hines, ha accompagnato il cantante Fats Domino. Nel 1952 ha guidato un trio insieme al chitarrista Courtland Carter e alla fine degli anni ’50 si è trasferito a Los Angeles dove lavora anche per la music pop. Nel 1959 ha lavorato per Plas Johnson e Earl Palmer e ha registrato a suo nome una serie di dischi molto commerciali.

Ha ricevuto le prime lezioni di piano dal padre all’età di otto anni, e trasferitosi a New York con la famiglia ha frequentato il Martin Smith College e ha iniziato a suonare in gruppi scolastici. Nel 1931 ha messo su una sua orchestra con la quale ha lavorato sino al 1938 nella zona di Cleveland. Ha iniziato anche a lavorare come arrangiatore per Jay McShann. Dopo il servizio militare ha lavorato freelance, incidendo con Buddy Tate, Don Redman, Thelma Carpenter, Walter Page, Buck Clayton. Negli anni ’60 ha lavorato con George James e nel 1968 ha fatto una tournée europea con Buddy Tate.

Dal 1977 al 1978 ha studiato al New England Conservatory, con Jaki Byard e George Russell. Ha fatto parte dei gruppi di Ernie Wilkins, Sam Rivers, Chuck Israel, G.Russell. Negli anni ’80 ha lavorato con Machito, i Jaki Byard Apollo Stompers, con Lionel Hampton e Gil Evans. Ha collaborato anche con Elvin Jones, Woody Shaw, Roy Haynes, Cedar Walton, Dave Sanborn, Art Blakey ed altri.

Fratello di Minor Hall, ha cominciato ad interessarsi di musica dall’età di dieci anni. Ha avuto il primo ingaggio nel 1913 con la Eagle Band, poi è andato nella Crescent Band nel 1915, con la Silverleaf Band dal 1916 al 1917. Si è poi trasferito a Chicago dove ha suonato con Sugar Johnny Smith, nel 1920 con Clarence Miller, poi con Jimmy Noone nel 1921, con Carroll Dickerson nel 1922, con Doc Watson dal 1922 al 1923, con Louis Armstrong dal 1926 al 1927, con Clarence Black dal 1927 al 1928, con Boyd Atkins nel 1929, con Half Pink Jackson nel 1933 e con Johnny Dodds nel 1934. Dopo una pausa di tre anni ha ripreso l’attività con un suo gruppo.

E’ cresciuta vicino a Livingston in Alabama dove nel 1937 ha incontrato l’etnomusicologo John Avery Lomax che le ha fatto registrare numerose canzoni che sono conservate all’United State Library of Congress. Nel 1948 il figlio di Lomax, Alan Lomax l’ha portata a New York per una esibizione alla Columbia University.
HALLBERG BENGT (P)
Goteborg, Svezia. 13/9/1932.
Dopo aver fatto gli studi classici è entrato nell’orchestra da ballo di Thore Jederby, poi con Kenneth Fagerlund e Sven Sjoholm nella città di Malmoe. Nel 1950 ha raggiunto la notorietà per una felice serie di registrazioni con Stan Getz nel 1950 ed in seguito con Clifford Brown. Ha messo su un proprio trio con il quale ha ottenuto un certo successo. Con Lars Gullin e Arne Domnerus è andato a New York nel 1974. In seguito ha lavorato sopratutto come compositore e alla radio con un proprio quintetto bop. E’ senz’altro uno dei migliori pianisti europei degli ‘40’50. Solista dal tocco leggero, nello stesso tempo energico e dalla grande fantasia. Il suo primo modello è stato Teddy Wilson, in seguito i suoi riferimenti sono stati Bud Powell e Lennie Tristano.

Musicista arrivato molto tardi in sala di registrazione, difatti ha inciso il suo primo album all’età di 55 anni. E’ cresciuto a Little Rock, dove ha iniziato a suonare il sassofono ed il clarinetto a scuola. Ha iniziato a suonare professionalmente con Joe Maini ed in jam session durante il suo soggiorno a Los Angeles. Nel 1958 si è trasferito a New York, ed il suo momento migliore lo ha avuto quando ha sostituito Wayne Shorter nell’orchestra di Maynard Ferguson durante le esibizioni al Birdland. Ha fatto anche perste delle orchestre di Louie Bellson e Philly Joe Jones. Ha lavorato nei club di New York e nel 1966 prima è stato nell’Arkansas e poi in California ed infine a Nashville. Ha continuato a lavorare nei club e negli studi. Nel 1980 si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha avuto molto successo nei club, nel 1988 ha registrato con il trombettista Brad Goode. Nel 1996 ha preso parte al Chiocago Jazz Festival insieme a Eric Alexander e Cecil Payne, con il quale ha anche registrato.

Interprete molto originale e personale dei più famosi standards e delle sue particolari composizioni. Ha iniziato ad affermarsi all’inizio degli anni ’60, in precedenza ha suonato il trombone con Sammy Kaye, Larry Elgart, Warren Covington, in diversi gruppi che hanno accompagnato Sarah Vaughan, con Jack Jones e con Vic Damone. Nel 1967 è entrato nel gruppo non ancora famoso dei “Blood Sweat And Tears”, dando il suo notevole contributo all’affermazione internazionale del gruppo stesso. Nel 1971 si è trasferito a Los Angeles e qui si è dedica alla composizione di musiche per la televisione, per la pubblicità e per i film. Ha ottenuto diversi riconoscimenti e premi. Musicista dallo stile intimo, molto delicato e sofisticato ed anche vivace e brioso, dalla musica raffinata ed intensa. L’ultimo gruppo da lui guidato è il “Dick Halligan & Melting Point”collaborato da jazzisti italiani.

Ha fatto parte del gruppo volale “Joyspring”con il quale ha partecipato al Festival Jazz di Kansas City. Ha lavorato durante la sua carriera con Chris Anderson, Walter Bishop Jr., Walter Booker, Frank Gant, Jimmy Ponder, Lionel Hampton, Paul West, John Hicks e Dexter Gordon. Ha studiato canto classico con Camilla Williams, un soprano classico molto famoso. Ha anche collaborato con Lonnie Hillyer, Harold Danko, Danny Hayes, Kuni Mikami, Bruce Edwards, Carman Moore. Ha debuttato nel 1940 con l’orchestra di Gene Krupa, con il quale ha suonato anche nel 1944. In seguito ha lavorato con Billy Butterfield, con Bobby Byrne ed in diverse orchestre commerciali. Nel 1951 è entrato a far parte dell’orchestra di Ray McKinley e dopo una parentesi con quella di Machito è tornato con McKinley che ora dirige la ex orchestra di Glenn Miller e con la quale è venuto anche in Europa. Ha inciso diversi dischi come leader man mano affiancato da ottimi musicisti.

Ha studiato composizione alla Music High School della sua città. Ha studiato privatamente il piano jazz con Mal Waldron, si è interessato di diverse musiche, da quella afro-latino a quella indiana ed altre. Ha voluto imparare a suonare anche di diversi strumenti di diverse etnie musicali. Ha fatto parte dell’avanguardia berlinese, ha suonato con Tom Van Geld ed altri musicisti con i quali ha partecipato a diversi Festival. Della sua generazione è senz’altro uno dei musicisti più interessanti.
HAMER IAN (TP)

Trombettista, uno dei pionieri del jazz moderno inglese. Ha collaborato per diverso tempo con il sassofonista Tubby Hayes. A partire dagli anni ’80 si è stabilito nel sud a Brighton, dove ha rallentato molto l’attività, limitandola solo a qualche tournée con gruppi importanti come quello di Kenny Wheeler. Ha registrato anche con i Beatles e con Barbra Streisand. E’ anche un buon arrangiatore.
HAMILTON ANDY (ST)
Port Maria, Giamaica. 26/3/1918.
Ha iniziato a suonare ancora bambino su di un sax di bambù ed ascolta con molto attenzione ai programmi radio americani Ellington e Basie. A 18 anni ha messo su la sua prima orchestra. E’ emigrato negli USA dove ha iniziato a fare il cuoco, ha soggiornato brevemente a Buffalo e Syracuse prima di tornare in patria, dove ha iniziato l’attività di arrangiatore. Nel 1949 è arrivato in Inghilterra e si è stabilito a Birmingham, dove di giorno ha lavorato in fabbrica e la notte ha suonato nei club, dove ha avuto modo di accompagnare Art Farmer e David Murray. Ha diretto regolarmente un suo gruppo al Blue Note insieme al pianista Sam Brown ed la batterista Johnny Hoo. Nel 1991 ha inciso un album da leader con giovani musicisti inglesi e come ospite David Murray.

HAMILTON CHICO (DR)
Los Angeles, California. 21/9/1921.
Ha iniziato a studiare il clarinetto, quindi ha frequentato la Jefferson High School dove ha avuto per colleghi Charles Mingus, Illinois Jacquet e Dexter Gordon. Ha debuttato con Floyd Ray, ha suonato poi con Lionel Hampton nel 1940, con Lester Young e con Slim Gaillard. Dopo aver terminato il servizio di leva ha preso delle lezioni di batteria da Jo Jones, quindi ha inciso con Count Basie e dal 1948 al 1955 è stato l’accompagnatore fisso della cantante Lena Horne. Nel 1952 è stato il batterista del primo quartetto di Gerry Mulligan. Ha suonato anche con Lyle Murphy, Bill Perkins e Andy Lawrence. Ha messo su un delizioso quintetto con: Jim Hall, Carson Smith, Buddy Collette e Frederick Katz al violoncello, ha suonato del Jazz cameristico ma pieno di swing, che ha avuto un notevole successo. Con gli anni il gruppo è diventato sempre più sperimentale, ha avuto nelle sue fila anche un Eric Dolphy alle prime armi, il chitarrista ungherese Gabor Szabo e Charles Lloyd e nel 1960 il violoncello è stato sostituito dal trombone. Nel 1966 ha costituito la Chico Hamilton Productions, dedicandosi alla composizione di musiche per le pubblicità. In seguito ha anche diretto gruppi di jazz-rock e di musica sperimentale. Negli anni si è andato sempre più defilando e le ultime sue apparizioni sono state sempre meno convincenti. Nel 1989 ha rimesso su il vecchio quintetto per una serie di concerti in Europa. Grande batterista con le spazzole, percussionista molto raffinato, pieno di dinamismo.

Ha debutta con la Banner Band del violinista Gus Mortinet nella sua città natale. In seguito si è trasferito a New Orleans dove ha lavorato con Evan Thomas, nel 1919 con Chris Kelly e poi con Sam Morgan. Dal 1928 ha tentato di organizzare una sua orchestra, prima la ”Lions Brass Band”con Manue Trapp, il trombettista Al Landry, il trombonista Morris French, il clarinettista Willie Parker, il batterista Ernest Rogers e suo figlio Lumis alla tromba, orchestra che è riuscito a tenere in piedi sino al 1930. Non avrà fortuna nemmeno la prossima orchestra più commerciale, ma coinvolta nella famosa crisi del ’29.

Ha preso le prime lezioni di percussione a cinque anni ed in seguito ha frequentato l’Indiana University a Bloomimgton dal 1971 al 1973. Ha studiato privatamente con il batterista John Von Ohlen a Indianapolis Nel 1947 ha fatto parte della “New Tommy Dorsey Band” diretta da Murray McEachern, con la quale ha anche esordito in sala di registrazione. Ha suonato con l’orchestra di Lionel Hampton, con Mike Murphy nel 1981, con il gruppo Almeida/Byrd nel 1982, con l’orchestra di Woody Herman nel 1983, con i Los Angeles Four, nel trio di Monty Alexander. Essendo sotto contratto con la Concord, ha accompagnato in sala di registrazione, Juli Roberts, Ernestine Anderson, Jackie Cain e Roy Kral, i Clayton Brothers, Rosemary Clooney, Cal Collin, Art VanDamme, Herb Ellis, Dave Frishberg, Bud Shank, Scott Hamilton, Ray Brown, Gene Harris, Ted Nash e Mel Tormè. Alla fine degli anni ’80 ha fatto parte della Philip Morris Superband diretta da Gene Harris. Nel 1984 ha diretto insieme a John Clayton la Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, con la quale si è esibito a Perugia Jazz, avendo come ospite Milton Jackson. Ha accompagnato Ella Fitzgerald e ha fatto parte della Count Basie Orchestra, ha collaborato anche con Mark Murphy, Bob Cooper, Snooky Young, Bill Holman e nel luglio del 1990 con Oscar Peterson. Nel 1994 ha guidato un suo trio con il pianista Larry Fuller, ed il bassista Lynn Seaton. Ha registrato nel 1989 con la Vic Lewis’s West Coast All Stars, con Benny Carter e Clarke Terry, con Dan Barrett, nel 1996 con John Leitham e nel 1997 con Oliver Jones. In seguito è stato il batterista fisso del gruppo di Diana Krall, con il quale ha girato il mondo mietendo grandi successi. Batterista pieno di swing, erede diretto della scuola dei grandi batteristi swing degli anni’40. I suoi modelli sono Mel Lewis e Philly Joe Jones, oltre ad essere un batterista essenziale e molto misurato e anche un buon compositore ed arrangiatore.

E’ cresciuto a Philadelphia ed ha iniziato gli studi musicali all’età di sette anni con diversi strumenti dal clarino al sax baritono, al trombone, piano, tromba, sax alto ed il sax tenore, seguito dal padre. Ha debuttato con Frank Fairfax, ha suonato poi con Lonnie Slappy, Lucky Millinder, con Jimmy Mundy nel 1939, con Teddy Wilson, con Benny Carter nel 1941, Yank Porter, con Eddie Heywood nel 1943. Lo stesso anno è entra a far parte dell’orchestra di Duke Ellington, della quale è diventato un’altra voce particolare del sound ellingtoniano, sia al clarino che al sax tenore, con Ellington è rimasto per venticinque anni. Nel 1968 di è dedicato all’insegnamento ed ha guidato un suo gruppo. Clarinettista dallo stile freddo, distaccato, elegante, anche lui ha subito lo influsso di Benny Goodman. Con Ellington è stato in netto contrasto con il calore del clarino che l’aveva preceduto, quello di Barney Bigard, nondimeno non lo ha fatto rimpiangere, anzi è stato uno dei protagonisti che hanno dato un tono più moderno alla compagine ellingtoniana. Ha fatto esperienza anche come impresario organizzando il “Jimmy Hamilton’s Ferry Boat Festival” a Brielle nel New Jersey, dove egli risiede e dove si esibisce il fine settimana al Ferry Boat Night Club.

Ha iniziato la sua brevissima carriera nell’orchestra di Billy Kato nel 1930. E passato poi con Chick Webb, con Kaiser Marshall, con Buddy Neal nel 1935 e con Fats Waller dal 1938 sino alla sua morte nel 1942. Quindi ha finito la carriera con Eddie South.

Leesburg, Georgia. 16/4/1929. – New Rochelle, New York. 20/7/1969.
Nel 1943 si è trasferito a Jersey City, dove ha fatto il commerciante, ha fatto il pugile,,m prima di entrare nel gruppo dei “Singers Searchlight”. Nel 1947 ha vinto il concorso al teatro Apollo di Harlem, tuttavia sino al 1953 ha continuato a fare il commerciante e ha iniziato ad avere qualche successo come contante nei club del New Jersey. Cantante soul, dalla voce dalla estensione operistica, dal belting splendente. Spesso interprete di romantiche canzoni pop, con il suo stile pieno di note aspre e di singhiozzi richiamanti le origini religiose. Il. suo nome è stato inserito nella Georgie Music Hall of Fame del 2010.
