CROSBY BING HARRY LILLIS. (VC)

Tacoma, Washington. 2/5/1904. – Madrid, Spagna. 14/10/1977.

Cresciuto a Sposane, nello stato di Washington, da padre americano e da madre di origine irlandese. Le ristrettezze famigliari gli impongono di lavorare e studiare insieme. A otto anni gli é dato il soprannome di Bing, da ”Bingo”, un popolare personaggio di una comic strip (Bingleville Bugle) di cui era appassionato lettore. Ha studiato legge al Gonzaga Institute retto dai padri Gesuiti, ma non ha completato gli studi. Aspirante batterista e cantante ha iniziato a farlo nel gruppo scolastico, i “Juicy Seven”. Nel 1921 è entrato in un gruppo professionistico studentesco, i “Musicaladers”, gruppo che seguiva lo stile molto in voga della “Original Dixieland Jazz Band”. Con il pianista Al Rinker, fratello della nota cantante, ha messo su un duo novelty di canto e pianoforte. In seguito i due si sono trasferiti a Los Angeles, qui hanno incontrato il favore del pubblico, e l’impresario Arthur Freed li ha scritturati per la rivista “The Morrisey Music Hall Revue”, al Majestic Theatre. Hanno preso anche parte ad un varietà al “Metropolitan Theatre”, dove li ha notati Paul Whiteman che li ha scritturati per la sua allora famosissima orchestra, siamo nel 1927. Con l’inserimento di Harry Barris pianista cantante nasce il “Paul Whiteman’s Rhythm Boys”. Lo scarso successo li ha visti relegati da Whiteman in un circuito di vaudeville. E’ arrivata la grande occasione nel 1930, Whiteman ha girato il film “Il re del Jazz”, dopo il film hanno lasciato l’orchestra per ritornare ad esibirsi liberamente in moltissimi club, dove hanno ottenuto un grande successo al “Montmartre Cafè”di Los Angeles ed un altro al prestigioso “Cocoanut GRove” di Hollywood. Intanto Bing si è sposato con la cantante e attrice Wilma Wyatt (Dixie Lee) Il successo è continuato in una riuscita trasmissione radio e nei shorts comico-musicali diretti da Mack Sennett. Il suo manager è il fratello maggiore Everett, che si dimostra amministratore bravo quanto il fratello nel cantare. Ha iniziato a girare una serie di films musicali per la Paramount, e ha alternato l’attività cinematografia con quella radiofonica e quella televisiva. Dagli anni trenta si è dedicato quasi completamente alla musica leggera, ma è stato anche un buon cantante di jazz, possedendo le caratteristiche essenziali, l’intonazione, gli accenti, le inflessioni blues, il fraseggio, il senso del ritmo, oltre ad una innata sensibilità jazzistica, ne fanno testo le collaborazioni con Bix Beiderbecke, con Frankie Trumbauer nel 1928, con Don Redman, con Eddie Condon, con i fratelli Dorsey, con Duke Ellington, con Lionel Hampton, con Woody Herman, con Jack Teagarden, con Eddie Lang, con Joe Sullivan, con Count Basie e con Louis Armstrong. Ha inciso un enorme numero di dischi, ha girato molti film ed è considerato il più famoso cantante di musica leggera dell’ultimo cinquantennio.

Musisista famoso non solo per essere il fratello minore del famoso cantante Bing ma anche per avere diretto una delle migliori orchestre dell’epoca. Ha inizia la carriera nel jazz come cantante nell’orchestra di Anson Weeks, per andare poi con Tommy e Jimmy Dorsey dal 1934 al 1935. Nel 1935 ha rilevato l’orchestra di Clark Randall e con essa ha raggiunto la popolarità, è diventata una delle migliori orchestre bianche dell’epoca la più caratteristica della scuola swing e riportando in auge anche il Dixieland. I migliori solisti dell’orchestra hanno fatto parte anche dei “Bob Cats” che senz’altro ha dato le migliori incisioni del jazz bianco dell’epoca. Con lui hanno lavorato eccellenti musicisti come il batterista Roy Bauduc, il bassista Bob Haggart, i trombettisti Charlie Spivak e Billy Butterfield e diverse cantanti come Doris Day. Da notare che la sua produzione è stata sempre costante. Nel 1942 a Los Angeles l’orchestra si è sciolta, Crosby proseguito l’attività alla direzione di complessi commerciali, ha preso parte a numerosi film, durante il conflitto mondiale ha diretto un’orchestra della Marina di stanza nel Pacifico. Negli ultimi anni ha riunito diverse volte vecchi gregari per delle sedute d’incisione, ha preso parte a trasmissioni radio e per la TV come cantante e fino agli anni ’80 ha continuato a riunire i suoi Bob Cats. E’ stato una rarità come direttore d’orchestra non suonando egli alcun strumento e non sapendo nemmeno leggere la musica, è stato però il leader di rappresentanza di un’orchestra che è riuscita in modo mirabile a fondere il dixieland con il suono e gli arrangiamenti di un’orchestra swing. anche come cantante era piuttosto modesto.

Cresciuto nella famiglia Crosby non poteva che diventare un musicista. Ha iniziato a prendere lezioni di batteria mentre frequenta la High School, ha iniziato a suonare nel gruppo scolastico, avendo come collega Phineas Newborn, poi ha suonato con il pianista Evans Bradshaw. Ha iniziato la carriera professionistica nel 1948 con il gruppo di B. B. King, con il quale è rimasto sino al 1957, registrando anche dei dischi. Nel 1953 ha messo su un suo gruppo a Columbus, nell’Ohio. Nel 1957 ha suonato con Rusty Bryant e a Cleveland con Joe Alexander. chiusura

CROSBY GARY (B)

Londra, Inghilterra. 26/1/1955.

Figlio di giamaicani emigrati a Londra, ha iniziato a suonare molto giovane a 13 anni, nel 1974 si è recato negli Stati Uniti per studiare con Peter Ind e nel 1980 ha organizzato un suo gruppo il “Jazz Warriors”. Tornato in Europa si è fatto conoscere partecipando ed ottenendo molto successo in molti Festival e concerti. Ha guidato anche un gruppo con Courtney Pine, Steve Williamson ed il vibrafonista Orphy Robinson. Ha accompagnato durante i soggiorni europei, Art Farmer, Larry Coryell, Gary Bartz, Joey Calderazzo e molti altri.

CROSBY ISRAEL (B)

Chicago, Illinois. 19/1/1919. – Chicago Illinois. 11/8/1962.

Ha iniziato a suonare la tromba ed in seguito nel 1934 ha deciso di dedicarsi al contrabasso. Non ha trovato molte difficoltà per inserirsi rapidamente nell’ambiente del jazz. Già nel 1934 ha suonato con Johnny Long, poi con Anthony Fambro, con John Kirby, con Jessy Stacy, con Albert Ammons e nella grande orchestra di Gene Krupa nel 1935. La sua notorietà è cresciuta notevolmente quando ha ottenuto l’ingaggio da parte di Fletcher Henderson nel 1936. Con questa grande orchestra è rimasto sino al 1938. Poi è passato con i “Three Sharps and a Flat” nel 1939, con Horace Henderson nel 1940 ed infine con Teddy Wilson dal 1941 al 1943. Bassista molto apprezzato, richiesto soprattutto in studi di incisione dove ha collaborato con Coleman Hawkins nel 1944, con Roy Eldridge, con Jimmy Noone, con Ahmad Jamal, con Benny Goodman. Ha finito la carriera e la vita nel gruppo di George Shearing. Bassista dotato di sensibilità non comune, dal tocco delicato. Anche se ha avuto una carriera relativamente breve ha avuto modo di mettersi in evidenza lasciandoci degli assoli che sono rimasti celebri. Difatti è stato il primo ad incidere un assolo di basso nella storia del jazz, in una incisione del 1935 con l’orchestra di Gene Krupa, nel brano “Blues For Israel”. chiusura

CROSBY OCTAVE (P)

New Orleans, Louisiana. 10/6/1898.

Ha imparato da solo a suonare la batteria ed ha iniziato a suonarla ancora giovanissimo con Louis Dumaine. In seguito sotto la scuola della madre e di una pianista professionista Camilla Todd ha imparato a suonare il piano ed all’inizio degli anni’20 è tornato a lavorare però come pianista sempre con Dumaine, con il quale si è esibito al “Bungalow” ed al “West End” di New Orleans. Ha suonato poi con Herb Morand, e ha lavorato come solista in diversi locali, tra i quali i teatri “Dauphine” e “Lyric” e nei cinema ha accompagnato i film muti. Ha fatto parte di una tournée in Arkansas di Gus Metcalf. Rientrato a New Orleans ha suonato al “Bull’s Club”con Chris Kelly e sul battello “Susquehanna” con Buddy Petit. Nel 1925 è tornato a suonare con Herb Morand, con il quale ha fatto una tournée nello Yucatan nel Messico. Tornato a New Orleans è stato ingaggiato da Kid Rena, poi ha suonato con Oscar Celestin, nel cui gruppo si è alternato con Jeanette Kimball. Dello stesso gruppo in seguito è diventato anche il leader in sostituzione di Celestin, che aveva ottenuto un importante ingaggio. Ha registrato diversi dischi per la Southland e per la Imperial. Negli ultimi anni si è esibito regolarmente alla Preservation Hall, al fianco di Kid Thoams, Kid Sheik e George Lewis. Pianista di buona qualità sia tecnicamente che dal punto di vista espressivo.

CROSS EARL (TP-FLH)

St.Louis, Missouri. 8/12/1933. – St.Louis, Missouri. 1987.

Ha studiato il mellofone a scuola. Durante il servizio militare ha modo di incontrare diversi musicisti con i quali ha fatto amicizia e che lo hanno convinto ad intraprendere la carriera musicale una volta lasciato il servizio militare. Il suo primo impegno lo ha avuto a San Francisco dove ha accompagnato il cantante di rock-and-roll Larry Williams, quindi ha messo su il suo “Bay Area Quintet”e poi con Monty Waters ha diretto una big band nella quale ha suonato sia il trombone che il mellofone. Nel 1967 si è spostato a New York dove ha suonato con Sun Ra e con Sunny Murray. Ha tenuto dei workshops a Woodstock e a New York, dove ha anche suonato con Rashied Ali, Archie Shepp, Robin Kenyatta, Noah Howard, con Charles Tyler, con il quale si è esibito al “Rivbea” di New York, con William Smiley Winters, Dewey Redman, e nell’orchestra diretta da Barbara Donald e Sonny Simmons. Eè venuto in Europa e si è stabilito in Olanda, qui ha suonato con Charles Tyler, poi in Germania, al Festival Internazionale di Moers nel 1977. Ha suonato con il gruppo “Philadelphia Movement” di Kham Jamal al North Sea Jazz Festival del 1980. Ha girato in Inghilterra, ha condotto dei workshop in Olanda, ha fatto tournée in Scandinavia e negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1984 in duo con C.Sharpe suona a New York. In seguito dopo un ricovero in ospedale, è tornato a St.Louis. Ha registrato anche un album “Saga of The Outlaws”. Interessante musicista della nuova generazione. chiusura
