COLTRANE JOHN WILLIAMS (SS-ST)

Hamlet, NC. 23/9/1926. – New York. 17/7/1967.

Sassofonista che ha sconvolto la storia del jazz, ha aperto le porte al free e irrobustito l’hard bop, senza perdere mai di vista la tradizione nero americana con la sua voce piena di memorie: dai work songs ai field-hollers. Figlio di un musicista dilettante la cui prima attività è stata quella di sarto, a tredici anni ha suonato il sax alto nell’orchestra diretta dal Reverendo Steele. Tra il 1945 ed il 1946 ha suonato nella banda del reggimento di stanza alle Haway. Finito il servizio militare ha fatto parte di diversi gruppi, con Joe Webb che dirige un gruppo di rhythm and blues, poi ha suonato con Big Maybell, con King Kolax e con Eddie Vinson. Nel 1948 ha collaborato con i fratelli Heath ed è entrato a far parte dell’orchestra dell’Apollo di Harlem. A Philadelphia ha fatto amicizia con Howard McGhee e Philly Joe Jones. Nel 1950 è entrato nella big band di Dizzy Gillespie, poi ha fatto parte dei gruppi di Lonnie Slappery, Gay Grosse, Johnny Hodges e Earl Bostic. Nel 1955 è entrato nel quintetto di Miles Davis, con il quale ha aperto una pagina storica della intera storia del jazz. Ha suonato al Five Spot con Thelonious Monk nel 1957 e questo incontro ha segnato un’altra svolta radicale e John sviluppa in pieno la propria personalità. Ha suonato poi con Kenny Burrell e con Gene Ammons. In seguito ha maturate certe convinzioni si è messo in proprio. Nel 1959 ha raggiunto il massimo della notorietà, ha riportato ai fasti del jazz il sax soprano in un brano indissolubilmente legato a lui come “My Favorite Things”. A questo proposito si ricordano due aneddoti sull’uso del sax soprano da parte di Coltrane : il primo che abbia pensato di suonarlo dopo averlo sentito suonare per telefono a Steve Lacy ed il secondo che l’avrebbe adottato perché a suo dire era più facile da suonare in albergo stesi sul letto. Egli si è circonda sempre di musicisti adatti alle sue esigenze, come McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, e Elvin Jones. Si è esibito alla Jazz Gallery, al Half Note, al Villane Gate, in molte tournée in ogni parte del mondo. In seguito è stato attirato dal free jazz di Ornette e ha voluto esplorare le possibilità offerte dalla libera improvvisazione collettiva, allargando il quartetto ad altri musicisti, tra i quali Eric Dolphy e Alice McLeod. Ha avuto anche lui come altri problemi con la droga dalla quale è riuscito ha liberarsi all’inizio degli anni ’60. Sassofonista che ha avuto grande influenza sul corso del jazz, senz’altro il suo periodo migliore è quello antecedente alla scelta free. Osservatore del suo mondo interiore, ha dedicato la sua breve esistenza alla ricerca musicale e spirituale, è stato un prezioso anello di congiunzione tra il post bop ed il free, ricordiamo il celebre “Love Supreme” perfetta fusione tra impegno spirituale e tecnica. Ha registrato anche con Gil Evans e Duke Ellington. La sua musica è sempre andata alla ricerca delle radici africane, completata da una tecnica ineguagliabile e una grande ricchezza spirituale. Ed a tale proposito ricordiamo un suo pensiero : Dio è ogni cosa – E’ grazia e perdono – Egli è amore che unisce tutti – E’ veramente un amore supremo.

Huntington, New York. 6/8/1965.

Secondogenito di Alice e John Coltrane. Si è accostato alla musica iniziando a suonare il clarinetto durante gli anni di scuola, ha frequentato per quattro anni il California Istituto delle Arti, dove ha studia musica e sassofono con Paul Melrose e Charlie Haden. Nel 1991 è stato ingaggiato da Elvin Jones negli “Jones’s Jazz Machine” e nel 1992 si è trasferito a New York dove ha svolto lavoro di sideman ed ha inciso con Geri Allen, Kenny Barron, Cindy Blackman, Steve Coleman, Wallace Roney, Jack DeJonhette e Joe Lovano. Nel 1997 ha inciso il suo primo disco da leader “Moving Pictures” pubblicato dalla RCA Victor, e ha formato il primo gruppo a proprio nome con il pianista Andy Milne, il bassista Daryl Hall, e Steve Hass alla batteria. Con questa band, che ha visto a volte la partecipazione di James Genus al basso e George Colligan al piano, egli ha suonato a lungo negli USA e in Europa. In seguito ha inciso a proprio nome “Round Box” nel 2000, “Mad 6”, pubblicato nel 2003 dalla Columbia Records, e nel 2005 “In Flux” per la Savoy, con un quartetto comprendente Luis Perdomo, Drew Gress e E.J. Strickland. Egli ha anche curato la pubblicazione di diversi dischi del padre usciti negli ultimi anni, e ha fondato inoltre una propria etichetta discografica, la RKM Music. Oltre all’attività da leader ha collaborato tra gli altri con McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Michael Brecker, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Branford Marsalis, Mark Turner e Jacky Terrasson. Musicista dallo stile molto personale, anche se ha subito l’influenza di Joe Henderson e Sonny Stitt. Questo figlio del grande John, ha percorso una sua via del tutto personale nell’affermarsi, l’essere figlio di tale padre non lo ha aiutato nella carriera, anzi poteva essere un danno se si fosse visto in lui l’erede di tanto padre. Egli invece si è conquistato la propria identità, ha studiato e lavorato sodo forse più di tanti altri.

Chitarrista che si è affermato all’inizio degli anni ’20 come uno dei migliori discepoli di Eddie Lang. Ha ottenuto il suo primo ingaggio nel 1923 con gli “Original Indian Five” e poi si è associato con Phil Napoleon e Miff Mole, con i quali ha lavorato a più riprese nella seconda metà degli anni’20. Nel 1925 è entrato nei “Charleston Chasers”, gruppo molto celebre nel quale si sono avvicendati i migliori musicisti dell’epoca. Nel 1926 è entrato nel “Five Pennies”, poi nel trio di Frank Signorelli, con Roger Wolfe Kahn, ha accompagnato Ethel Waters. Nel 1928 è entrato nell’orchestra dei Dorsey Brothers, poi ha fatto parte dei “New Yorkers” di Joe Venuti. Negli anni ’30 ha lavorato con Sam Lanin, con Ben Selvin ed in seguito è entrato nell’orchestra di Henry Levine.chiusura

COLUMBIA.

Compagnia discografica ed etichetta che ha effettuato la prima registrazione di jazz, quella del 1917 con la Original Dixieland Jazz Band. In seguito con la supervisione del batterista Harry A.Yekers ha prodotto registrazioni di altri due importanti gruppi neri: la Hendy’s Orchestra of Menphis del 1917 e la Wilbur Sweatman’s Original Jazz Band del 1918. Oltre a Yekers il responsabile della Compagnia era Ted Lewis. Nel 1922 è stata venduta alla Sterling’s Constructive Finance Company Ltd. Non essendoci più problemi economici nel novembre del 1923 la American Columbia ha immesso sul mercato una serie di rarità di 13.000 dischi. Da allora questa casa discografica non ha conosciuto che successi, ed ha continuato a produrre tutto il jazz nuovo ed anche ristampe.chiusura

Banda di New Orleans attiva nella città tra il 1897 ed i primi del 1900. Ne hanno fatto parte tra gli altri, i cornettisti Alphonse Picou e Punkie Valentin, il trombonista Bouboul Valentin ed il trombettista Alvibiades Jeanjacques. E’ stata in circolazione tra gli anni 1897 ed i primi del 1900. chiusura

COLUMBIA ORCHESTRA.

Può essere considerata senz’altro la prima orchestra di jazz italiana. Nelle sue fila hanno suonato musicisti che hanno avuto un ruolo importante nella nascita e nella crescita del jazz in Italia. Ne ricordiamo i più importanti, Piero Rizza, Michele Mike Ortuso, Alberto Semprini che negli anni seguenti raggiungerà una grande popolarità e Edoardo De Risi che ne era il direttore e l’arrangiatore.

Ha debuttato a 13 anni suonando il violino, ed a 17 anni ha lasciato gli studi per iniziare la carriera di cantante. Nel 1928 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Gus Arnheim. Nel 1931 si stabilisce a New York insieme al suo manager e scrittore di canzoni con Conrad. Si è rivelato anche un buon compositore, ha pubblicato diverse canzoni che avranno molto successo, interpretate dai migliori cantanti dell’epoca. Crooner rivale ed imitatore di Bing Crosby. Tra i vari imitatori è stato quello che ha avuto maggiore successo nei primi anni ’30. E’ stato soprannominato il Rodolfo Valentino della canzone. La sua voce di baritono setoso e romantico si è affermata nell’orchestra di Gus Arnheim, che in seguito sarà anche il trampolino di lancio di Bing Crosby. Ha troncato la sua carriera sul nascere sparandosi accidentalmente con una vecchia pistola.

Padre di Sonny Payne, ha diretto una propria orchestra dai primi anni trenta a tutti gli anni cinquanta. E’ stato il batterista fisso per diversi anni al Savoy Ballroom. Dal 1946 al 1952 ha suonato con Louis Jordan, poi ha suonato con Benny Carter 1952, con il trio di Wild Bill Davis e negli anni ’60 è stato l’accompagnatore della cantante Damita Jo. Per un brevissimo periodo ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Duke Ellington nel 1967. Personaggio singolare si è ritirato dall’attività all’inizio degli anni ’90. E’ il padre di Sonny Payne batterista balzato alla celebrità nell’orchestra di Count Basie. chiusura

Orchestra nata nel 1973 in seno alla Columbus University dell’Ohio. Orchestra composta da studenti appassionati di jazz che ogni anno si riunivano, dopo aver svolto il master, per effettuare delle tournée nelle quali spesso hanno riproposto i temi e le composizioni che sono stati argomenti del master. Il loro impegno maggiore è stato riprodurre i sounds celebri delle orchestra di Duke Ellington, di San Kenton, di Count Basie. Diplomato alla Northern School of Music di Manchester, dove in seguito ha insegnato clarinetto. In seguito è entrato a far parte di due famosi gruppi, come i Jazz Aces e i Saints Jazz Band. In seguito verso il 1970 ha acquista un tono più caldo ispirandosi a Matty Matlock. Nel 1980 ha lavorato con la “Keith Nichols Ragtime Orchestra” e la “Alan Elsdon’s Band”, suona poi con la Humphrey Lyttelton Band. Clarinettista molto abile, egli è anche un arrangiatore coscienzioso di cui hanno potuto usufruire i vari gruppi nei quali ha suonato. chiusura

Vero spirito e leader del jazz di New Orleans inglese, non del revivalist, ma nel puro spirito della tradizione. La musica che ritorna alla singola nota sincopata, il largo vibrato ed il tono vocale. Ha sempre evidenziato che il suo è un amore profondo per la musica di Morton e di Lewis. Nel suo soggiorno a New Orleans ha registrato con Emile Barnes ed altri, al ritorno in Inghilterra ricco delle esperienze fatte dopo una breve collaborazione con Chris Barber, ha messo su una sua banda. Ha avuto una carriera trentennale esemplare, si è circondato sempre di musicisti validissimi. Nel 1950 ha fatto una tournée insieme a George Lewis. Il suo ricordo di questo musicista è rimasto vivo e specie in Gran Bretagna nessuno ha mai raggiunto la sua perfezione.

Gruppo che ha sinora dimostrato freschezza di idee e un modo intelligente di gestirsi.

Ha frequentato il Conservatorio di Losanna, dal 1940 al 1944, dove si è diplomato in pianoforte. Nel 1941 ha iniziato la carriera di musicista suonando la batteria e affermandosi come miglior musicista svizzero. Ha suonato con Fred Bolher, ha registrato a Basilea nel 1944 con il gruppo di Philippe Brun, ha suonato per cinque anni nell’orchestra di Hazy Osterwad, ha registrato nel 1947 con Eddie Brunner, con Ernst Hollerhagen. Ha girato l’Europa e dal 1957 al 1965 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Kurt Edelhagen. Ha accompagnato molti musicisti americani di passaggio : Benny Bayley, Buck Clayton, Benny Carter, Stan Getz, Kenny Clarke, Oscar Pettiford, ha registrato con il pianista Paul Kuhn nel 1958, con Fats Sadi nel 1959, con Heinz Kretzschamar nel 1960 e con il pianista austriaco Roland Kovac nel 1968. Ha accompagnato Lucky Thompson in tour per la Svizzera, ha diretto il gruppo dixieland “Tremble Kids” nel 1976, ha fatto parte del “Groupe Instrumental Romand” che si è esibito nel Navata ed in California nel 1978. Ha abbandonato gli studi di ingegneria per dedicarsi al jazz ed al sax tenore. Ha iniziato a suonare in orchestrine da ballo. La sua grande passione per il jazz lo ha portato a suonare all’Abbaye de Theleme, uno dei migliori locali di Parigi, dove ha avuto modo di suonare con Grappelli ed altri. Nel 1931 ha suonato nell’orchestra di Bruno e poi con Gregor Kelekian, con Lucien Moraweek nel 1934, con Guy Paquinet e con Michel Warlop. Spesso è stato invitato a suonare con musicisti americani di passaggio come Freddie Johnson, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Louis Bacon, Bill Coleman, e lo ha fatto senza sfigurare, ha fatto parte anche del “Quintette du Hot Club de France”. Entra nell’orchestra di Ray Ventura nel 1938, ha diretto la migliore big band di jazz francese, la “Jazz de Paris” nel 1940. Dopo il 1960 si è dedicato prevalentemente alla composizione ed arrangiamento per sedute di incisione, per il cinema, per la radio e la televisione. Senz’altro il miglior musicista francese della sua generazione. In seguito ha avuto anche suoi gruppi con i quali ha fatto parecchie tournée all’estero. Attirato dallo stile di Hodges e Carter, in seguito divideva le sue simpatie tra Hawkins e Young. E’ definito con buoni motivi il più nero dei jazz francese.

Gruppo nato a Torino alla fine degli anni ’70. Attivo soprattutto nei vari centri del Piemonte. Il suo leader è il baritonista Maurizio Giannotti, collaborato da Aldo Ridone al pianoforte, dal bassista Giorgio Matorri e dal batterista Girogil Diaferia. Sporadicamente con il gruppo hanno suonato anche Flavio Boldro, Claudio Banadè (sx) Gigi Venegoni, Giorgio Ardrizzi, Claudio Mantafia e Pippo Calvagna. E’ cresciuto a Philadelphia dove ha iniziato a cantare nel coro della chiesa, poi a scuola ha iniziato a studiare il trombone e mentre frequenta la High Scool studia il sassofono con Buddy Savitt. Inoltre ha studiato pianoforte, teoria e contrappunto. Nel 1963 ha iniziato la carriera con piccoli gruppi locali. Ha guadagnato un borsa di studio in composizione all’Accademy of Music di Philadelphia nel 1968. Ha lavorato nelle stazioni radio. Nel 1970 studia seriamente il sassofono ed il flauto. Dal 1977 si è trasferito a New York ed ha collaborato con Dom Um Romao, Lawrence Cook, Earl Cross, Jim Hartog e Susanne Marcus. Nel 1980 ha lasciato New York per andare a Boston, dove suona con vari gruppi ed insegna. Musicista che si è cimentato in diversi stili musicali e con strumenti diversi e ha svolto altre attività culturali.

Nato in una famiglia di musicisti, ha studiato vari strumenti, il trombone sotto la guida del padre, poi durante il servizio militare ha studiato la tromba, il sax baritono, la tuba ed il basso, che diventa il suo strumento. Ha debuttato nel 1946 con Lionel Hampton, poi ha suonato con Phil Moore nel 1947, nel 1948 è entrato nel famoso trio di Nat King Cole per restarvi sino al 1951. Ha suonato poi con Oscar Moore nel 1952, con Red Norvo, con Perez Prado nel 1953, con l’orchestra di Harry James nel 1954, con quella di Billy May nel 1955, con Buddy Collette, con Nelson Ridde dal 1956 al 1960. In seguito si è dedicato maggiormente al lavoro negli studi di incisione, ha partecipato a diverse registrazioni di Frank Sinatra. Bassista dalla sonorità profonda ed ottimo tempismo, che lo hanno fatto essere valido in ogni contesto. chiusura

Gruppo messo su da due violinisti, Zach Brock e Tom Wright, tutti e due di estrazione classica. Wright ha fatto parte per anni della Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Entrambi hanno trovato nel jazz una esperienza stimolante, essi sono riusciti a ricreare lo spirito e la vivacità delle scatenate battles o di sfavillanti summit di lontana memoria. Hanno scelto lo strumento elettrificato per definire una netta linea di confine con il classico. Per il resto tutto all’insegna dello swing più scatenato.

Ex barbiere della Pensylvania, di origine italiana, ha iniziato la carriera come cantante ai confini del jazz, nella piccola orchestra di Ted Weems. E’ il più esplicito tra i discepoli crosbiani, si è distinto dal suo grande modello per una voce più nasale e per un più mediterraneo romanticismo. Ogni sua interpretazione è intima, semplice e di presa universale. Comunque di estrazione meno jazzistica, diventa uno dei più famosi crooners dalla voce romantica degli anni’40. E’ stato conduttore di una delle trasmissioni televisive più seguite del successivo decennio. chiusura

Cantante, pianista e suonatrice di banjo e di washboard. Ha anche interessi nel teatro e nella industria dei video. Musicista appassionata del jazz anni ’20, ma anche dello swing, che ha suonato in moltissime manifestazioni negli Stati Uniti, a Londra e Stoccolma. Ha collaborato con Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli, Al Cohn, Ronny White, Warren Vache, i “The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band”, i Nighthawks di Vince Giordano, i “Jazz Speakeasy Babies e molti altri. Ha anche lavorato per diversi anni alla radio sia come musicista ed anche come intervistatrice. Musicista poliedrica, passa dal cool-jazz alle melodie di Billie Holiday alla musica chiassosa dell’avanspettacolo.

Gruppo olandese che da molti anni si è dedicato alla musica composta dal maestro italiano Marcello Rota, famoso per aver composto la colona sonora dei film di Federico Fellini. L’impegno maggiore da parte del gruppo è stato nella cura degli arrangiamenti di tali composizioni ed anche gli assoli sono sempre ben inseriti in questo contesto. Il gruppo è arrivato sempre all’esecuzione ben strutturata ed elaborata attraverso molte meticolose prove. Tutto questo mette la musica del maestro sotto una luce più colorata restando comunque fedele allo spirito di essa. chiusura

Pool internazionale di musicisti fondato da Derek Bailey nel 1976, che si riunisce in occasione di registrazioni. Il primo gruppo è stato costituito da oltre a Bailey, da Evan Parker, Maarten Van Regteren Altena e Tristan Honsinger.

Ha debuttato a Bruxelles con i White Diamone diretti dal batterista Billy Smith nel 1923. Ha messo su la New Royal Dance Orchestra con la quale ha girato il Belgio. Nel 1929 ha registrato i suoi primi dischi da leader in trio con Fernand Coppieters. Ha accompagnato Josephine Baker, e nel 1936 si è esibito sul transatlantico Normandie sulla rotta per New York. Ha accompagna anche Django Reinhardt, ha suonato con Joe Bouillon, ha registrato con il violinista Eddie Tower (Emile Deltour) nel 1942, e nel 1954 ha diretto un suo sestetto. chiusura

COMPOSERS’ WORKSHOP.

Gruppo di cui è stato promotore Charles Mingus. Gruppo che raccoglie musicisti d’avanguardia bianchi e negri. I primi concerti ed i dischi sono del 1953, con diverse formazioni. Ha avuto come manager il critico di Jazz Bill Coss. Ha iniziato con il nome di Jazz Workshop, lo stesso è stato poi cambiato in Composers’, per finire in “Jazz C. W. Composers Workshop Ensemble”. chiusura

COMPOSERS WORKSHOP ENSEMBLE.

Gruppo cooperativo di improvvisatori messo su da Warren Smith jr., insieme al trombonista Jack Jeffers ed al compositore Coleridge Parkinson nel 1960 con il nome di “Jazz Arrangers Worlshop”, nome che in seguito è stato cambiato dal compositore Steve Chambers (fratello del batterista Joe Chambers) in quello attuale. Il repertorio oltre a composizioni originali, suona composizioni di Gerald Wilson, Horace Silver e Thelonious Monk, arrangiati dallo stesso Smith. Nel dicembre del 1962 hanno dato il primo concerto alla Carnegie Hall con : Warren Smith e Omar Clay (batteria e percussioni) Herb Bushler (basso) Bross Townsend (piano) Jack Jeffers (trombone) Johnny Coles (tromba) Howard Johnson (sax baritono e tuba) Da allora il gruppo si è riunito almeno una volta all’anno e nel 1972 è uscito il loro primo disco intitolato “Composers Workshop Ensemble. In seguito non ha cambiato la formazione originale ed hanno continuato l’attività. Gruppo rimasto pressochè sconosciuto, ha rappresentato invece un gruppo vitale ed interessante di giovani musicisti americani. Hanno prodotto la vera musica classica nera, dalle sonorità sostanziose e acide, molto avanti ma radicata nella tradizione.chiusura

COMPTON J. GLOVER (P)

Harrodsburg, Kentucky. 1884. – Chicago, Illinois. 11/6/1964.

Ha suonato in coppia con il pianista Tony Jackson, dal 1910 al Cosmopolitan Theatre di Louisville. E’ stato il marito della cantante Nettie Lewis. Dal 1910 al 1912 si è esibito all’ ”Elite n.1”di Chicago e per diverso tempo in seguito nei club della West Coast. Ha suonato con Jimmy Noone, all’ ”Edelweis Gardens” e con Ollie Powers al “paradise” ed al “Dreamland” di Chicago. Dal 1926 al 1939 ha soggiornato e suonato a Parigi, poi è tornato negli States, dove ha suonato a Chicago sino a metà degli anni’50 quando colpito da paralisi è stato costretto al ritiro. chiusura

CONAWAY STERLING BRUCE. (BJ)

Washington D. C. 26/10/1898. – U.S.A.nov.1973.

Fratello di Lincoln, chitarrista e banjonista, ha suonato a Washington con Duke Ellington intorno agli anni ’20. Poi si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha ha suonato nel gruppo di Carroll Dickerson dal 1922 al 1924, poi con l’orchestra diretta dal pianista Cyril Fullerton. Ha registrato un disco dove suona l’ukulele, accompagnando la cantante Helen Gross. Dal finire degli anni ’20 sino a tutti gli anni ’30 è stato in Europa, dove ha suonato con Eddie South e con Freddy Taylor. Tornato in patria, ha suonato con Noble Sissle nel 1931, con Freddy Johnson, nel 1935, nel 1936 ha suonato con i Symphonians di Cricket Smith a Bombay in India, con Leon Abbey nel 1937 e con una sua orchestra. In seguito si è ritirato dalla musica attiva.chiusura

CONCORD.

Casa discografica ed etichetta, fondata a Concord, California nel 1973, da un commesso viaggiatore, investitore immobiliare ed entusiasta del jazz Carl Jefferson. Organizzatore del Jefferson’s Concord Festival al Concord Papillon, registra e pubblica le performances dei gruppi partecipanti alla manifestazione, dandovi anche un nome che li distinguesse in particolare i “Concord All Stars”, “Concord Jazz All Stars” e “Concord Super Band”. Nella metà degli anni ’80 Jefferson fonda l’etichetta “Camco” con la quale pubblica il “McPartland Piano Jazz”dell’omonimo show radiofonico. Si distingue per la serie dei pianisti registrati alla Maybeck Recital Hall, a Berkeley in California. Colpito da una grave malattia Jefferson vende la Compagnia nel dicembre del 1994 alla Alliance Entertainment Corporation ed il suo presidente continua sulla strada tracciata da Jefferson.chiusura

CONDE ALBERTO (P)

Galizia, Spagna.

Prima di legarsi al pianoforte jazz ha suonato per un breve periodo la chitarra classica. Egli ha svolto una parte della sua carriera a Caracas’ come solista classico. In seguito si è trasferito per breve tempo in California e poi a Madrid in Spagna e qui ha iniziato a lavorare come pianista di jazz. Il suo punto di riferimento è senz’altro Bill Evans, non essendo però in possesso nemmeno lontanamente della sua profondità armonica. Egli ha applicato le sue esperienze classiche ad un intreccio ritmico. La sua musica è un compromesso tra forme di jazz e la vitalità di altre forme di musica.

All’età di tredici anni ha seguito i suoi fratelli in Giappone dove ha iniziato a lavorare in orchestrine da ballo e nei studi di registrazione. Durante il conflitto mondiale ha dovuto cambiare il nome in Raymond Yoshiba. Finita la guerra ha avuto successo con il suo gruppo swing il “Quintetto Gay”esibendosi nel miglior club per ufficiali americani. Nel 1988 è stato organizzato per il suoi 55 anni di carriera un concerto in suo onore. chiusura
