FREELON NNENNA, PIERCE. (VC)

Cambridge, Massachussetts. 27/7/1957.

Ha iniziato a cantare i gospel ed ha studiato da infermiera al Simmons College di Boston ed all’Università del North Carolina. Prima di iniziare a cantare ha lavorato a Durhan nel Nord Carolina, ha vissuto per breve tempo a Houston ed è tornata a Durhan nel 1982, dove ha lavorato con gruppi locali. Nel 1990 è stata scoperta da Ellis Marsalis, al Souther Arts Federation Jazz Forum di Atlanta in Georgia ed è divenuta la vedette della Columbia. Ha collaborato con Norman Simmons, Bob Cranshaw, il chitarrista Scott Sawyer, Kenny Washington, Kenny Barron, Christian McBride, Lewis Nash. Ha fatto parte della orchestra di Toshiko Akiyoshi in un concerto alla Carnegie Hall nel 1992. Nel 1997 è andata in tournée con la T.S.Monk. E’ giudicata una Abbey Lincoln dai toni più morbidi, ma con molto meno originalità e tecnica. Comunque è dotata di una voce ariosa e di una certa grazia, appena velata di sensualità.

Zio di Chico Freeman e fratello di Von e di George. Dopo aver fatto il servizio militare ha studiato alla Metropolitan School of Music. Ha esordito nei gruppi dei fratelli. Per diverso tempo è stato il batterista fisso al Pershing Lounge di Chicago, dove ha anche accompagnato molti musicisti di passaggio tra i quali Charlie Parker, con il quale ha anche registrato. A New York ha accompagnato Sarah Vaughan. Nel 1953 si è trasferito in California dove ha suonato con Hampton Hawes, Herb Geller, Bobby Bradford, John Carter. Alla fine degli anni ’70 si è stabilito alle Haway. chiusura


FREEMAN BUD LAWRENCE F. (ST)

Chicago, Illinois. 13/4/1906. – Chicago, Illinois. 15/3/1991.

Le prime lezioni di musica gli sono state impartite dal padre di Jimmy McPartland. Ha debuttato nella “Austin High School Gang”, l’orchestra della scuola e nel 1927 ha registrato con Red McKenzie, registrazioni che sono gli esempi classici dello stile Chicago. Nel 1927 si è trasferito a New York dove ha suonato con Hoagy Carmichael, con Ben Pollack, con i Bob Cats e nel 1928 si è imbarcato come membro dell’orchestra della nave Ile de France. In seguito ha suonato con orchestre importanti come quelle di Red Nichols nel 1929, con i Louisiana Rhythm Kings, Roger Wolfe Kahn, con Joe Venuti nel 1933, Zez Confrey, con Ray Noble nel 1935, con Mezz Mezzrow nel 1936 ed infine con quelle all’epoca più famose quella di Tommy Dorsey nel 1936 e di Benny Goodman. Insieme con Eddie Condon ha messo su la “Summa Cum Laude Orchestra”, le cui registrazioni hanno messo in risalto la sua alta figura di solista. Ha registrato con Muggsy Spanier nel 1945, in seguito ha messo su un proprio gruppo però senza grande fortuna. Ha fatto parte dal 1969 al 1971 della “World’s Greatest Jazz Band”. Ha vissuto per un certo periodo a Londra, poi è tornato alla sua Chicago dove ha ripreso a lavorare freelance. Sassofonista che è stato paragonato a Lester Young per la sonorità ed a Coleman Hawkins per i suoi profondi legami con la tradizione. Sostanzialmente egli è stato un solista travolgente, un caposcuola, il modello ideale della scuola Chicago, pieno di gioia e senso dello swing. Solista disciplinato, dall’ampio vibrato, dal ritmo costante e melodicamente molto vario. Negli anni ’50 ha frequentato la scuola di Tristano del quale però non ha subito alcuna influenza.
