DORHAM KENNY MCKINLEY HOWARD (ABDUL HAMID) (TP)

Fairfield, Texas. 30/8/1924. – New York. 5/12/1972.

Nato in una famiglia di musicisti, a sette anni ha studiato il pianoforte ed a 15 ha iniziato a suonare la tromba regalatagli dalla sorella patita di jazz. Si è iscritto al Wiley College di Marshall nel Texas, per studiare chimica, ma tralasciata per studiare teoria musicale alla Gotham School of Music. Ha debuttato con Milton Larkins in vari club locali. E’ entrato nel 1942 nell’esercito dove ha fatto parte della squadra di box, congedato ha continuato a frequentare il mondo della box, ma presto è tornato nel mondo della musica a Huston nell’orchestra di Russell Jacquet. Nel 1944 si è trasferito a New York dove ha frequentato il Minton’s Playhouse e si è esibito al Savoy Ballroom. Ha suonato con Frank Humphries e nel 1945 è stato ingaggiato da Dizzy Gillespie, con il quale ha dimostrato di essere anche un buon cantante e, nel dicembre del 1945, con l’orchestra di Billy Eckstine sino al gennaio del 1946. Ha suonato con Lionel Hampton nel 1947, con Mercer Ellington nel 1948, con l’orchestra di Billy Taylor/Bud Johnson, con la quale ha suonato a New York, ad Haiti ed alla Esposizione Nationale. Il 23 dicembre ha sostituito Miles Davis nel gruppo di Charlie Parker, è rimasto con lui sino al 1950. Ha frequentato la Gotham School of Music e, oltre che suonare, ha fatto altri mestieri per mantenere la famiglia. Ha suonato con Mary Lou Williams, ha inciso con Jay Jay Johnson, con Milton Jackson, con Art Blakey, con Horace Silver e nel 1950 è stato un membro fondatore dei Jazz Messengers. Nel 1956 ha diretto un suo gruppo i “Jazz Prophets”, poi ha sostituito Clifford Brown nel gruppo di Max Roach. Ha insegnato alla Lenox School of Jazz nel Massachussetts, a Parigi ha preso parte al film “Les liaisons dangereuse”. Ha insegnato al “Jazzmobile” ad Harem, quindi ha dovuto rallentare l’attività per problemi ai reni e ha lavorato occasionalmente con Hank Mobley e Bobby Jones nel 1971 e si è esibito allo “Slugs” nightclub di New York. Nella sua pur breve carriera, ha collaborato in molti gruppi: con Fats Navarro, Coleman Hawkins, Kenny Clarke, Sonny Rollins, Tadd Dameron, Phil Woods, John Coltrane, Helen Merrill, Barney Willen, Cecil Payne, Benny Golson, Thelenious Monk, Andrew Hill e Cecil Taylor. Non ha raggiunto la popolarità che meritava, essendo contemporaneo di grandi trombe come Gillespie, Navarro negli anni ’40 e Clifford Brown e Miles Davis negli anni ’50. Resta comunque uno trombettista importante per la sua profonda carica di blues e la sua vena lirica.

Personaggio molto conosciuto nel campo discografico. Ha prodotto dischi di jazz, ma anche di pop e rock. Dal 1965 al 1974 ha diretto l’Atlantic, poi è passato alla Capitol. Ha diretto anche la Warner, la Columbia, la Epic, l’A & M, l’Arista,la Rhino ed altre etichette fondate da lui stesso, come la Night Records e la 32 Records. E’ stato un profondo conoscitore della musica, ha concesso sempre un grande appoggio e ampia libertà espressiva a molti grandi musicisti che hanno lavorato con lui. chiusura

Durante la seconda guerra mondiale ha diretto diversi piccoli gruppi. Ha studiato pianoforte e composizione alla North Texas State Teacher’s College dal 1946 al 1949. Si è trasferito a New York nel 1949, qui ha completato la sua formazione musicale presso la Columbia University dove si è laureato nel 1952. Ha inizia la carriera suonando nei club e come pianista ed arrangiatore di Sugar Ray Robinson ex pugile divenuto show man. Ha registrato con Sam Most e nel 1954 si è trasferito a Parigi dove ha lavorato come accompagnatore e direttore musicale per molti musicisti americani residenti e di passaggio. In questo periodo ha collaborato in sala di registrazione con Blossom Dearie. E’ tornato negli States dove ha iniziato a fare altre attività sempre in campo musicale. E’ stato notato nel 1962 da Miles Davis che lo ha voluto nel suo gruppo come cantante e compositore. In seguito ha fatto il produttore di cartoni animati. All’inizio degli anni’80 ha riavuto successo come cantante-pianista soprattutto in Europa. Sino al 1996 ha scritto e diretto musica per programmi culturali in televisione. E’ tornato ancora in Europa con suoi piccoli gruppi. Può essere considerato un cantautore di jazz, dallo stile equilibratamente comico e in possesso di molto swing.

Talento precoce, ha imparato a suonare vari strumenti. Per prima la cornetta, che ha suonato nella banda del padre Thomas F. Dorsey, poi è passato al clarino, con il quale debutta con i Cranton Sirens, per poi suonare con: Menphis Five, California Ramblers, Jean Goldkette nel 1928, Henry Thies, Ray Miller, Vincente Lopez. Paul Whiteman nel 1929, Red Nichols, Ted Lewis nel 1930, Miff Mole, Bix Beiderbecke, Joe Venuti, Freddie Rich. Nel 1934 con il fratello Tommy ha messo su la “Dorsey Brothers Orchestra”. Tale unione è durata solo un anno, nella separazione l’orchestra è rimasta sotto la sua direzione ed ha ottenuto molto successo, è diventata sempre più popolare ed ha assunto un ruolo di protagonista tra le orchestre dell’era dello swing. Nel 1936 ha inciso con lui Louis Armstrong, alla fine degli anni’40 ha formato la “Original Dorsey Land Jazz Band” insieme al batterista Ray Bauduc. Apprezzato clarinettista di stile Chicago però ha avuto più importanza come altosassofonista per la sua grande tecnica, riconosciuta dallo stesso Parker.

Di origini georgiane, il suo nome d’arte era Georgia Tom quando accompagnava Tampa Red ed in seguito sia come pianista che come direttore dell’orchestra dello spettacolo di Ma Rainey. Lasciato lo spettacolo è tornato definitivamente alla fede battista e nel 1932 ha fondato la prima corale alla “Ebenezer Baptist Church”. E’ stato lui il primo a creare il gospel song dall’unione di canti religiosi e blues. Si deve a lui la scoperta ed il lancio di tre notissime interpreti dei gospel song: Sallie Martin, Willie Mae Ford Smith, Mahalia Jackson e Roberta Martin. Con la sua “Gospel Singers Convention”ha organizzato ogni anno, una sorta di spettacolo itinerante portato in giro per gli Stati Uniti, nel quale lanciava nuovi talenti. Compositore religioso paragonabile a Duke Ellington nel campo del jazz, ispiratosi al jazz , al blues ed al vaudeville.

Cantante e pianista protagonista insieme al più famoso Tampa Red nel genere cosidetto “hokum blues”. Egli è considerato il padre di un altro tipo di gospel e le nuove canzoni erano indicate come le “dorseys”. All’inizio della carriera di pianista era conosciuto come “Georgia Tom”. Il suo blues implica delle trovatine sceniche per attirare di più il pubblico ed è pieno di ritornelli allegri e di storielle erotiche piene di doppisensi. Un genere che prese piede alla fine degli anni’20 ed i cui iniziatori sono stati appunto Dorsey e Tampa Red con i loro duetti. E’ stato il direttore musicala del Pilgrim Baptiste Church di Chicago dal 1932 alla fine del 1970. La sua composizione più nota è “Take My Hand, Precious Lord”immortalata da Mahalia Jackson ed era il motivo preferito del Rev.Martin Luter King. Ha inciso anche con Ma Raney nel 1928.

Shenandoah, Pensylvania. 19/11/1905. – Greenwich, Connecticut. 26/11/1956.

Ha inizia a studiare la tromba sotto la guida del padre, nel 1915 è passato al trombone, con il quale ha debuttato giovanissimo insieme al fratello in vari gruppi locali ed insieme al fratello Jimmy ha messo su i “Dorsey’s Novelty Six” ed i “Dorsey’s Wild Canaries” . Nel 1924 si è trasferito a New York dove è entrato a far parte di orchestre di grido come quella di Jean Goldkette, Roger Wolfe Kahn, Paul Whiteman, Ted Lewis e Fats Waller. Nel 1934 insieme al fratello ha fondato la “Dorsey Brothers Orchestra”. Dopo un violento litigio i fratelli si sono separati, l’orchestra è restata sotto la direzione di Jimmy. L’anno dopo egli ha fondato la sua orchestra sui resti di quella di Joe Haymes ed anche lui come il fratello ha ottenuto un grande successo. Nel corso degli anni la sua fama è andata ben oltre l’America, con un organico notevole, composto da musicisti di prima grandezza, fra i tanti: Bud Freeman, Gene Krupa, Charlie Shavers, Buddy De Franco, Dave Tough e cantanti come Jo Stafford, Dick Haymes e Frank Sinatra, oltre ad arrangiatori bravissimi come Paul Weston e Sy Oliver. Nella conduzione della sua orchestra Dorsey ha trovato sempre ispirazione nelle grandi orchestre di colore. Trombonista per il quale ogni assolo si traduceva in una esecuzione tecnicamente perfetta e piena di sentimento. Nel 1953 i due fratelli si sono riuniti. Agli inizi della carriera ha inciso insieme a Bix Beiderbecke nel 1924, Hoagy Carmichael, Pee Wee Russell, con i Charleston Chaser, Eddie Lang. Ha registrato anche con una formazione più piccola i “Clambake Seven” composta dai suoi maggiori solisti.

Dopo aver studiato musica si è recato a Parigi insieme al costruttore di organi Cavaille-Coll nel 1912 e poi al Wannamakers di New York. Nei due anni di soggiorno americano è diventato amico intimo del famoso compositore George Gershwin. Nel 1923 è tornato a Parigi dove ha incontrato il pianista Jean Wiener, con il quale ha collaborato per 15 anni. E’ considerato uno dei pionieri del jazz belga, ha registrato da solo ed accompagnato moltissimi musicisti. chiusura

DOUGHERTY EDDIE, EDWARD. (DR)

Brooklyn, New York, 17/7/1915. – New York, 14/12/1994.

Ha iniziato a suonare la batteria a 13 anni ed ha iniziato a lavorare in gruppi tradizionali come quelli di Frankie Newton e Joe Sullivan. Ha suonato con Dicky Wells nei club di Harlem, ha accompagnato Taft Jordan, Frank Froeba, nel 1935 Mildred Bailey, Harry James, Billie Holiday, Frank Newton, Pete Jonhson, Meade Lux Lewis nel 1939. Nel 1940 ha avuto il difficile compito di sostituire Dave Tough nella “Bud Freeman’s Orchestra”. Ormai è un affermato e solido batterista, ha anche collaborato con Cliff Jackson, Art Tatum, Mary Lou Williams, Benny Carter, Benny Morton, Wilbur De Paris, Teddy Wilson, Albert Nicholas, con Earl Hines nel 1966. Il suo accompagnamento in due brani: Boo-Woo e Woo-Woo, con Harry James sono diventati degli esempi classici dell’arte dell’accompagnamento della batteria. chiusura

DOUGHTEN JOHN (ST)

Central Delaware, 22/6/1935.

Ha iniziato a studiare il clarinetto a 12 anni. A 15 anni é entrato nel quintetto di Lee Page, dove ha iniziato anche a suonare il sassofono. Sassofonista profondamente radicato nella tradizione dello swing, il suo punto maggiore di riferimento è Benny Goodman per il clarinetto e Stan Getz per il sax tenore. E’ rimasto con il gruppo di Page per 19 anni ed al suo scioglimento ha lavorato da freelance nel Delaware ed in Pennsylvania. Ha lavorato anche con Eddie Higgins, John Alfred, Warren Vache Jr., Frank Tate, Terry Gibbs, Larry McKenna, Ralph Sutton, Ken Peplowski. Ha Partecipato a molti Jazz festival. In seguito ha diretto anche un suo gruppo.

DOUGLAS ALAN (PRODUTTORE)

Dundee, Tayside, Scozia. 16/10/1951.

Editore che ha prodotto dischi storici ed è stato nel suo campo un innovatore. Negli anni ’60 ha dato spinte creative verso alcune tendenze del jazz e del rock. Egli ha alternato l’attività di collaboratore per grandi case editrici e a quella di produttore indipendente. Alla fine degli anni ’50 è stato assunto dalla francese Barclay per curare delle riedizioni storiche dei cataloghi della Atlantic, Mercury e United Artist. Proprio per la United Artist ha avuto la direzione del reparto jazz, e tra le tante pubblicazioni da lui volute oltre a quelle con Art Blakey, Kenny Dorham e Jackie McLean vi è stata quella storica, l’album “Money Jungle” nel quale ha riunito Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus e Max Roach e nella quale ha avuto l’abilità di far suonare insieme Ellington e Mingus superando molte difficoltà. Ha lasciato la United Artist per fondare la “Fm”. Nella seconda metà degli anni ’60 ha fondato la sua casa editrice la “Douglas”. Dopo i primi successi con Jimmy Hendrix ebbe l’idea di una seduta di registrazione con Hendrix e Miles Davis e Tony Williams, ma per le richieste di questi ultimi non se ne fece niente. Possiamo definirlo uno dei produttori più geniali. chiusura

DOUGLAS BILLY, WILLIAM. (TP)

New Haven, Connecticut. 12/8/1912. – Springfield, Maryland. 14/4/1978.

Nel 1932 ha esordito con l’orchestra di Earle Howard, nel 1933 ha suonato con Percy Nelson, con Sidney Bechet, con Jelly Roll Morton, con il pianista Jimmy Gun. Dal 1935 al 1937 ha suonato con l’orchestra di Don Albert, con il quale ha registrato anche suoi arrangiamenti. In seguito ha lavorato freelance a New York, Filadelfia e Chicago. Nel 1944 ha suonato con Earl Hines, Art Tatum e Red Norvo. Trombettista il cui modello iniziale è stato Henry Red Allen, del quale aveva la stessa intensità ed espressività. chiusura

DOUGLAS BOOTS, CLIFFORD. (DR)

Temple, Texas, 7/9/1908.

Ha diretto una “Territorial Band”, un complesso swing nato nel Texas, località nella quale all’epoca il jazz era uno sconosciuto. Egli ha creato proprio una scuola che ha avuto il suo centro nella località di San Antonio. Le tracce di questo batterista ci sono pervenute attraverso delle incisioni fatte con la Bluebrid tra il 1935 ed il 1936 con un suo gruppo i “Boots and his Buddies”. Naturalmente queste orchestre hanno risentito l’influenza del jazz di New Orleans anche perché in esse erano presenti musicisti che provenivano dalla città del Delta. In particolare quella di Boots ricalcava lo stile della banda di Louis Russell, che all’epoca rappresentava l’ideale anello di congiunzione tra lo stile New Orleans e lo Swing, per l’efficace semplicità dei passaggi arrangiati e nella poderosa spinta ritmica.
