BELLSON LOUIE, LUIGI PAULINO ALFREDO FRANCESCO BALASSONI. (DR)

Rock Falk, Illinois. 26/7/1924. – Los Angeles, California. 14/2/2009.

Ha iniziato a suonare professionalmente a quindici anni. Dopo aver vinto nel 1941 un concorso indetto da Gene Krupa, ha suonato con Ted Fiorito e nel 1946 è entrato a far parte della famosa orchestra di Benny Goodman. Dopo il congedo militare è entrato nell’orchestra di Tommy Dorsey e successivamente ha formato un complessino insieme a Charlie Shavers, Terry Gibbs ed altri. Ha suonato quindi con l’orchestra di Harry James nel 1950. Dal 1951 al 1953 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Duke Ellington nella quale ha portato novità e freschezza. Ha registrato anche con Art Tatum, con Count Basie, con Sarah Vaughan, con l’orchestra di Gerald Wilson, in quartetto con Oscar Peterson, inoltre ha diretto una propria orchestra molto tecnica, poco commerciale, nella quale ha fatto valere anche le sue ottime doti di arrangiatore. Ha continuato a registrare con altri gruppi tra i quali quello di K.Greco nel 1986. Uno dei migliori batteristi bianchi, particolarmente adatto alle grandi orchestre, dalla tecnica formidabile. E’ stato il primo batterista ad usare la doppia cassa. Ha fatto parte anche della JATP di Norman Granz, nella quale erano frequenti i suoi duelli con Gene Krupa. Il giorno 8 ottobre del 1995, la Jazz Society di Los Angeles ha voluto festeggiare con un concerto ed un banchetto i suoi 55 anni di carriera.

Bambino molto sensibile ai richiami artistici, dal disegno alla letteratura, dal teatro al cinema ed infine per la musica. Ha iniziato ad impegnarsi alla chitarra, per la quale si sente particolarmente portato ed ha iniziato ad esibirsi con vari gruppi. Dopo essersi laureato in lingue straniere si è trasferito a Boston dove ha studiato composizione e improvvisazione al Berklee College of Music, avendo tra gli insegnati anche Mick Goodrick. Ha iniziato ad appassionarsi al jazz dei grandi e nel tempo ha maturato una concezione molto personale dello strumento. In seguito rivolge il suo interesse alla musica classica europea, ai compositori del novecento ed alle avanguardie del jazz europeo. Negli anni ha frequentato diversi master condotti da grandi personaggi del jazz, ha continuato la sua formazione presso la Musikhochschule di Lucerna, dove ha studiato con il chitarrista Kurt Rosenwinkel. Nel 2002 ha fatto una tournée in Spagna con il suo primo trio e ha registrato il suo primo disco in quartetto. Dal 2003 il suo trio fisso è con Emanuele Maniscalco alla batteria e Roberto Bordiga al basso. Si è interessato di diverse forme di improvvisazione ed ha collaborato nella musica contemporanea. Nel 2004 è tra gli otto finalisti del mondo al “First Gibson Jazz Guitar Competition”al Festival di Montreux, ha vinto inoltre il premio Luca Flores al Barga Jazz. Ha scritto le musiche di un progetto ispirato ai lavori cinematografici del regista Ingmar Bergman e ha diretto corsi di armonia e composizione al conservatorio di Brescia.

Nel 1980 si è trasferito a Parigi dove ha suonato in vari club e ha diretto insieme al fratello il Belmondo Quintet ed anche una la loro big band. Fratello del sassofonista Lionel Belmondo, lo ha seguito nella carriera musicale. Ha studiato musica con il padre, ha iniziato a suonare la fisarmonica ed a 16 anni ha iniziato a suonare la tromba, studiando anche al conservatorio. Ha iniziato a suonare in gruppi di dilettanti nel sud della Francia. A diciassette anni si è trasferito a Parigi dove suona con molti bravi jazzisti francesi, Renè Urtreger, Marc Hemmeler, Antoine Hervé, Alain Jean-Marie, Laurent Cugny e con diversi musicisti americani come: Kirk Lightsey, John Scofield, Gil Evans. Nel 1992 insieme al fratello ha diretto un piccolo gruppo ed una big band.

Voce che malgrado la sua breve esistenza ha lasciato un ottimo ricordo del suo talento. All’età di cinque anni si è trasferito con la famiglia a Los Angeles ed a sette anni ha iniziato a cantare nel coro della chiesa. Ha scoperto il rhythm-and-blues ed è entrato a far parte del quartetto vocale dei “Three Dots And A Dash”. La sua carriera ha iniziato a decollare anche come scrittore di canzoni delle quali molte passate ad altri per pochi dollari che hanno ottenuto dei grandi successi commerciali. La sua vita ha una svolta positiva quando ha sposato Jo Anne, che è diventata sua manager ed ha messo in ordine la sua economia disordinata. Essa gli ha fatto ottenere ottimi contratti, le sue canzoni hanno ricevuto il giusto compenso e sono state interpretate da grandi artisti. Soprannominato “Mr.Easy” (Mr.Facile) per la fortuna che lo sosteneva. Cantante soul, attivo sulla West Coast. Voce cool elegante interprete di celebri ballads nelle quali addolcisce, senza però eliminarle, le proprie inflessioni nere e churchy. Purtroppo ha avuto una carriera molto breve, stroncata a ventisette anni da un incidente automobilistico.

Il padre originario delle Isole Canarie e la madre ebrea della Bielorussia. Nel 1991 si è diplomato al Conservatorio di Musica Oberlin. Ha lavorato con James Spaulding, Quincy Jones, Wynton Marsalis, all’organo con Ray Charles, ha fatto un tour in Grecia con la Preservation Hall, con Eddie Harris, David Murray, Frank Foster, Louie Bellson, Roy Hargrove, Antonio Hart, David Berger, i Sultan of Swing. Ha ricoperto diverse volte il ruolo di direttore artistico e pianista in spettacoli teatrali. Ha registrato con David Berger. chiusura

E’ arrivato in America da Israele con la famiglia nel 1985. Il suo primo impegno americano è stato con il trio di Barry Harris, ha suonato poi con il pianista Chris Anderson. Ha sposato la cantante Amy London con la quale ha registrato degli album. Ha suonato inoltre con Etta Jones, Cecil Payne, Chris Anderson, Teri Thornton, Charles McPherson, Charles Davis, Bill Doggett, George Kelly, Gene Bertoncini e con Ralph LaLama. In seguito ha anche insegnato in corsi per chitarra. Giovane chitarrista che si è impegnato nella moderna tradizione dei Joe Pass e dei Wess Montgomery con passione e competenza. Strumentista padrone dello strumento, dal fraseggio sciolto e disinvolto pieno di swing.

Ha suonato con Smokey Hogg, Luther StonehamWright Holmes, Lightnin’Hopkins, insieme a Ellas Big Son Tillis ha girato tutta la California, nel 1955 ha suonato con King Ivory Lee, ha inciso anche con Mabel Franklin e Robert Ketchum. Ha dovuto abbandonare l’attività per le pessime condizioni fisiche causate dall’abuso di alcool. Caratteristica voce del blues rurale, dalla personalità esuberante, un vero showman.chiusura

BENDIAN GREGG (DR-PERC)

Englewood, New Jersey. 1963.

Musicista che è cresciuto a Teanick nel New Jersey e si è accostato alla musica attraverso la notevole collezione di dischi dei genitori. Ha iniziato a studiare le percussioni a sette anni, in seguito ha studiato anche il pianoforte e la composizione. Ha avuto ottimi maestri ed attraverso i dischi si è appassionato al jazz d’avanguardia, senza però tralasciare la musica classica. Musicista in grado di comporre musica da camera e suonare la batteria con Cecil Taylor. Ha concluso gli studi alla Rutgers University. Ha frequentato l’ambiente dell’avanguardia musicale newyorkese e attraverso John Zorn è entrato nella Company di Derek Bailey e nel 1989 ha approdato allo Unit di Taylor. In seguito si è dedicato anche all’insegnamento, ha partecipato a diversi Festival, ha fondato un suo trio con il banconista Tony Trischka ed il mandolinista Andy Statman. Negli ultimi anni ha proposto una versione aggiornata del jazz rock, attraverso il “The Mahavishnu Project”.

Fort Worth, Texas. 12/2/1914. – Costa Mesa, California. 29/5/2000.

Sassofonista e cantante venuto alla ribalta nell’orchestra di Glenn Miller dove è entrato a farne parte nel 1938 e della quale è divenuto uno dei maggiori protagonisti ed ha contribuito anche in parte al suo successo. Nel 1944 alla prematura e misteriosa scomparsa di Glenn Miller ne ha assunto la direzione, ed in seguito ne ha assunto anche la titolarità. Tipico sassofonista dell’era dello swing, dalla voce calda e dagli assoli pieni di riff accattivanti. E’ stato anche un cantante dalla voce piacevole e carezzevole e personaggio dalla grande comunicativa. Quelli di una certa generazione lo hanno conosciuto in uno dei primi film musicali arrivati nel primo dopoguerra ”Serenata a Valle Chiara”.

Personaggio particolare, ex musicista, eroinomane, si è guadagnato da vivere spacciando droga. Egli ha una vera e propria venerazione per Charlie Parker al punto che, nel momento in cui ha ascoltato le sue performance di Parker, ha deciso di smettere di suonare. Ha seguito Charlie Parker dovunque si esibisse e lo ha registrato regolarmente e di questo fatto gli siamo grati avendoci lasciato molte preziose registrazioni di Parker, per il quale inoltre era il fornitore più affidabile di droga.chiusura

Ha collaborato con Pepper Adams, Chet Baker, Billy Cobham, Al Cohn, Eddie Davis, Jesse Davis, Harry Sweet Edison, Roy Eldridge, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Reggie Johnson, Philly Joe Jones, Barney Kessel, Hank Mobley, Sal Nistico, i fratelli Heath, Charlie Rouse, Archie Shepp, Art Taylor. Ha iniziato a suonare del jazz con gruppi della sua terra. Nel 1981 è arrivato a Roma e qui si è diplomato al Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia a pieni voti. Ha suonato con Steve Grossman, Sal Nistico, Donald Harrison, Tony Scott, Massimo Urbani, Paolo Fresu. Ha inciso diversi dischi da leader. Ha anche insegnato in diverse scuole specializzate. Ha fatto parte anche della “Woody Shaw Memorial Band” di Marco Omicini.

Charleston, Virginia. 1903. – New York, 1970.

Insieme al fratello Tommy è stato educato musicalmente dai genitori essendo loro dei musicisti. Ha messo su una sua orchestra nella quale il fratello era il batterista. Nel 1923 è andato a New York e ha registrato con i Gulf Coast Seven, ha suonato con la Plantation Orchestra della quale la cantante è stata Ethel Waters. In seguito è entrato nei Seven Hot Babies di Thomas Morris, suona nel 1928 con i Red Hot Peppers di Jelly Roll Morton e poi Bubber Miley.chiusura

Charleston, Virginia. 19/4/1905. – New York, 24/3/1994.

La sua educazione musicale la ha ricevuta alla Jenkin’s Orphanage un orfanotrofio nella Carolina del Sud ed ha fatto parte dell’orchestra dello stesso istituto con la quale ha fatto una tournée in Inghilterra. Ha iniziato a suonare nel Green River Minstrel Show, ha suonato poi con Elmer Snowden, Charlie Skeet, Jelly Roll Morton, Edgar Hayes, Eddie South, Freddy Johnson, Garland Wilson, Freddy Taylor, Bill Coleman, Django Reinhardt, con Stephane Grappelli nel 1938, Willie Lewis, con Noble Sissle nel 1943, con Snub Mosley nel 1946, con Bob Wilber nel 1948, con James Archey nel 1950, con Rex Stewart nel 1953, Muggsy Spanier, con George Lewis nel 1955, con Joe Thomas nel 1963, Ed Hall, Danny Barker, Clayde Bernhardt, con la Harlem Blues Jazz Band nel 1981 e con Bob Green nel 1982. Della sua vita musicale ha trascorso molto tempo in Europa, anche durante la seconda guerra mondiale e vi è ritornato sempre molto volentieri. Classico batterista di New Orleans, col tempo ha reso il suo percussionismo più disinvolto e vario.chiusura
