ANDERSON, RAY (TB) rayanderson

Appassionato del trombone sin da piccolo, lo ha studiato sino alla maggiore età. Durante gli anni di studio ha fatto tesoro degli stimoli che gli venivano sia dalla scena del blues della sua città, sia ascoltando i dischi storici della collezione del padre. Ha iniziato a lavorare con gruppi di rhythm and blues e di rock, poi è’ entrato in contatto con l’ambiente dell’AACM. Nel 1971 ha suonato con Steve Elson e poi con il gruppo di Tom Bruno. Nel 1977 Anthony Braxton lo ha voluto nel suo gruppo. Nel 1980 ha suonato con Mark Helias, in seguito con Steve Nelson, Alan Jaffe e Jim Payne dando vita al gruppo ”Slickaphonic” con il quale hanno riscosso molto successo nei club di New York. Ha collaborato anche con Barry Altshul, con Gerry Hemingway nel 1983, con Misha Mengelberg, con Kenny Barron, con Cecil McBee e con Dannie Richmond. Con altri suoi gruppi come l’”Alligator Band” e poi con i “Lapis Lazuli” ha evidenziato il suo legame profondo al blues ed alla tradizione e con la sua “Pocket Brass Band” vuole far rivivere le suggestioni del jazz di New Orleans. Trombonista di ottimo livello, musicista molto melodico e nello stesso tempo ricco di senso dell’humour, in tale ottica mal si confaceva con le atmosfere di Braxton.

Il soprannome gli viene dal suono molto caldo del suo sassofono. Originario di Brooklyn, figlio di un batterista di New Orleans, ha iniziato a studiare pianoforte classico all’età di dodici anni, in seguito dopo aver ascoltato dischi di Charlie Parker passa al sax alto, che ha studiato privatamente sotto la guida di Frank Wess, Frank Foster e Charles Davis. Successivamente su consiglio di Brandford e Wynton Marsalis ha studiato alla Southern University di New Orleans, sotto la guida di Alvin Baptiste. Ha suonato per poco tempo con Benny Carter e poi nel 1988 con Wynton Marsalis. Alla fine degli anni ’90 ha suonato sempre con Wynton Marsalis nella Lincol Center Jazz Orchestra. Ha registrato con Nicholas Payton, con Peter Martin, con Christofer Thomas e brian Blade. Nel 1992 è entrato nel New Orleans Collective e nel 1994 ha registrato un album a suo nome. Ha registrato anche con Marcus Roberts e con Eric Red nel 1996.

Ha iniziato a suonare il clarinetto a 17 anni nella banda militare ed il sassofono in una orchestrina da ballo. Ha studiato clarinetto alla Kungliga Musikhogskolan (Royal College Music) di Stoccolma. Ha iniziato a suonare professionalmente come clarino solista in orchestre da camera e dal 1977 ha iniziato a suonare in gruppi di jazz anche come sassofonista tenore. Dal 1978 al 1983 ha suonato con il gruppo ard-bop di Egil Johansen, con la Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, ha registrato numerosi dischi anche con il gruppo del quale e leader insieme al trombettista Bertil Lovgren, ha suonato con Bernt Rosengren, con il quintetto Sture Nordin. Nel 2000 ha fatto parte del gruppo più importante di Svezia, quello del batterista Gibert Matthews.

Sassofonista bop, attivo nella West Coast del quale si sa pochissimo. Ha registrato un solo album per la Blue Note per poi scomparire nel nulla. Nessun altro album, nessun tour e nessuna collaborazione come sideman. Sappiamo solo che ha iniziato a studiare il sax alto ed il clarinetto all’età di dodici anni e che ha avuto lo stesso insegnante di Eric Dolphy. Partito dalla lezione di Parker e Lee Konitz si è dimostrato uno dei musicisti più interessanti della sua generazione. Sassofonista che per le sue interpretazioni degli standard, per il suo blues ed il controllo assoluto delle libertà lo pongono tra Dolphy ed i post-parkeriani come Jackie McLean. Per alcuni critici era troppo libero e per altri eccedeva in prudenza e troppo teorico.

All’età di sei anni ha studiato pianoforte classico e già a nove anni si è esibito come cantante in uno show alla radio. A 15 anni è il crooner dell’orchestra di Perminio Gonçalves. Nel 1961 si è esibito nel famoso nightclub “Beco das Garrafas a Bacaà, accompagnato dal trio di Sergio Mendez, e nello stesso anno ha registrato il suo primo disco da leader. Nel 1962 ha lavorato con l’orchestra di Dick Farney a San Paolo. In seguito ha vissuto in Argentina e poi nel 1966 si è stabilito in Messico. Dal 1980 al 1990 ha lavorato tra gli Stati Uniti ed il Brasile e nel 1993 si è stabilito a New York, ha preso parte a diversi concerti di jazz , nell’Agosto del 1994 ha ottenuto un grande successo al Hollywood Bowl Festival a Los Angeles e ha registrato al Lincoln Center un album in duo con il chitarrista Romero Lubambo. Nel 1995 ha ricevuto il premio Sharp come migliore cantante donna. Ha partecipato a diversi festival internazionali tra i quali quello di Umbria Jazz. Cantante di jazz-samba, è molto considerato il miglior cantante del genere da molti direttori d’orchestra, è stato con Paquito D’Rivera, Luiz Eça, Dick Farney, Joao Donato, Eumir Deodato e Francis Hime. Voce dallo stile eclettico, egli ha introdotto nel jazz-samba elementi di jazz che danno una coloritura particolare alle sue interpretazioni, senza alterarne lo spirito.

Ha studiato allo Shillinger House a Boston dal 1949 al 1950. Ha debuttato con Charlie Spivak nel 1950, poi ha suonato nell’orchestra Sauter/Finegan, con Woody Herman nel 1955, con il sestetto di Kai Winding nel 1956, per il quale ha anche composto diversi brani. Ha interrotto la sua attività per seguire dei corsi alla Manhattan School of Music. Ha ripreso l’attività negli studi a New York, ha suonato con l’orchestra di Art Farmer, nel 1961 con Gerry Mulligan, ha accompagnato Sarah Vaughan, ha collaborato con Wess Montgomery nel 1965, ha fatto parte dell’oganico dell’orchestra della CBS, ha suonato con Benny Goodman nel 1962, con la Jones/Lewis, Clark Terry, con Erroll Garner nel 1968, Michel Legrand, con Chick Corea nel 1975, con Dexter Gordon nel 1977, è ritornato con Benny Goodman nel 1978, poi con Jaco Pastorius nel 1982, e molti altri. Sempre nel 1982 ha diretto un suo quintetto e nel 1983 un sestetto con quattro trombonisti. In seguito si è dedicato completamente al lavoro di studio. In tali occasioni ha suonato come sideman con Illinois Jacquet nel 1995 e con John Pizzarelli nel 1996. Poi con Tom Harrell fa una tournée negli Stati Uniti ed in Europa ne, 1977. Ha raggiunto il massimo della sua efficienza con il gruppo dei “Caravans” diretti da Doroty Norwood, anche lei accesa predicatrice dal violento erotismo.. Il nomignolo di “Songbird” le è stato dato da Don Robey. La raccolta delle sue più belle interpretazioni sono state edite nel 1999, dalla Headline News.

Trio vocale formato da tre sorelle nate a Minneapolis nel Minnesota da padre greco e madre norvegese emigrati in America. La loro carriera ha avuto inizio tra le compagnie di vaudeville, in club ed infine alla radio. Hanno raggiunto l’apice della carriera nell’orchestra di Freddy Rich con il brano “Bei mir bist du schòn” nel 1937, che lo ha fatto diventare il trio vocale femminile più famoso d’America. Hanno fatto anche con successo una tournée a Londra nel 1948. Hanno inciso con Jimmy Dorsey. Il trio si è sciolto nel 1967 con la morte di LaVerne. Ha studiato alla Massachusetts School of Music, ha suonato a Springfield nel Massachussetts con Phil Woods, Sal Salvador e Joe Morello, nel 1949 và a Boston dove suona in trio con Sal Salvador. E’ entrato a far parte dell’orchestra di Charlie Barnet nel 1953, ha suonato poi con Claude Thornhill nel 1954, con Terry Gibbs, con Bernard Peiffer nel 1956. Ha anche registrato con Herbie Mann, con Don Stratton, Dal 1961 al 1965 ha fatto una lunga tournée negli Stati Uniti ed in Europa con l’orchestra di Woody Herman. In seguito ha svolto solo attività di free lance, in particolare a New York ed a Las Vegas e nel 1974 ha partecipato ad una serata in onore di Woody Herman. Dopo una occasionale seduta di accompagnamento con Charles Mingus, ha fatto il suo debutto in pubblico nel gruppo di Steve Lacy. Ha lavorato ed incide con il gruppo “Arp Quintet”. Ha collaborato anche con Tony Scott, Kenny Wheeler, David Schnitter, Giorgio Azzolini, Massimo Urbani, Gianni Basso, Gianluigi Trovesi. Il suo miglior amico e collaboratore è Tino Tracanna. Con il trombonista americano Martin Dietrich, è andato in America per una serie di concerti nei club di San Francisco. Da diversi anni guida l’”ARP”quintet.

ANGOLA BLUES.

Si tratta di una piccola cittadina nel West Feliciana Parish (Louisiana) a 50 miglia a sud di Natches, in essa a sede una delle più famose colonie penali degli Stati Uniti, la Louisiana State Penal Farm. Sono stati incisi vari brani con questo titolo: nel 1940 da Champion Jack Dupree per loa Vocalion. Il cantante Robert Pete Williams ivi detenuto nel periodo dall’Aprile 1956 al Dicembre 1959 incise durante la detenzione diversi brani pubblicati dalla Louisiana Folk Society. Anche i cantanti Otis Webster e Robert Guitar Welch registrarono ad Angola: rispettivamente Penitentiary Blues il primo e Electric Chair Blues il secondo.chiusura

ANT’S IN MY PANTS.

Letteralmente: formiche nelle mie mutande. Frase idiomatica usata in molti blues e nell’ambiente del jazz che significa “non stare più nella pelle”. Tale situazione può essere determinata dai motivi più disparati come: paura, ansietà, fame e desiderio. Nel 1931 la cantante Bo Carter ha inciso “Ant’s in my pants” nella canzone un verso dice testualmente “I got ant’s in my pants”. Ma il più celebre “I got in my pants” è stato scritto da Charles Gains con il titolo “ I can’t dance in my pants”, portato al successo da Chick Webb e la sua orchestra nel 1934 e cantato dal suo trombettista Taft Jordan. Il brano è stato lanciato in Europa dalla cantante Valaida Snow che lo ha inciso a Londra nel Febbraio del 1935, che è diventato un suo cavallo di battaglia. Sempre in Europa in Francia è stato inciso dall’orchestra di Willie Lewis il 13 Aprile del 1935. Chi la canta è il sassofonista Joe Hyman. Questo divertente brano è stato anche registrato da: Bernard Addison, Bob Howard, Freddie Jenkins e Clarnece Williams.chiusura

Ha avuto come maestro Clyde Lombardi che lo ha anche introdotto nell’ambiente musicale. Ha debuttato nel 1951 con George Auld, ha suonato poi con Buddy De Franco, con Jimmy Dorsey nel 1953, con Bob Brookmeyer, con Gerry Mulligan nel 1954, con Stan Getz nel 1954, con Claude Thornhill nel 1956. Ha anche suonato e registrato con Charlie Spivak, con John Williams, con Tony Fruscella. Bassista poco conosciuto, ha sempre preferito lavorare con piccoli gruppi.chiusura

ANTHONY LEO “LEE ROY” LEONARD ANTONINI (SB).

Dover, Ohio. 19/8/1925.

Fratello del più celebre Ray, si è trasferito ancora giovanissimo a Cleveland dove più tardi ha iniziato a lavorare. In seguito è entrato nell’orchestra del fratello, con il quale è stato dal 1946 al 1953. Ha diretto anche una sua orchestra che ha avuto però molto meno fortuna di quella del fratello. Ha proseguito la carriera nella musica pop e nel R&B.chiusura

ANTHONY LIZ (VC)

Cantante attiva a Cincinnati, vocalist dell’orchestra condotta dal trombettista Jerry Cinrad, che ha interpretato in chiave moderna molti standards della Swing Era. Purtroppo malgrado l’ottimo livello della conduzione e degli arrangiamenti dell’orchestra il suo livello interpretativo non si è elevato ed è risultato molto piatto ed incolore.

Bentlevyille, Pennsylvania. 20/1/1922.

Musicista di origine italiana. Ha debuttato a 17 anni con l’orchestra di Sam Donahue, poi nel 1940 ha suonato in quella di Glenn Miller, poi con Jimmy Dorsey nel 1942. Durante il servizio militare ha suonato nella banda militare della marina, congedato nel 1946 ha messo su una sua orchestra nel Midwest, con la quale ha riscosso subito un grande successo commerciale. Negli anni’50 la sua orchestra si è affermata come una delle migliori orchestre da ballo d’America, nello stile ricorda quelle di Glenn Miller e di Harry James. Ha realizzato con la casa discografica Capitol una copiosa serie di incisioni per lo più commerciali. Ha lavorato alla radio ed alla televisione e ha partecipato a diversi films musicali. Nella sua orchestra si sono alternati diversi ottimi musicisti, come Frank Rosolino, Dave Pell, Joe Maini, Nick Ceroli, Marshall Royal, Med Flory, Bob Efford. Come solista di tromba ricorda molto quella di Harry James, specie nella vena lirica.

Si è diplomato a Zurigo nel 1985, il suo interesse per il jazz stà nella sua partecipazione al gruppo “Self-Control” con il quale nel 1986 ha partecipato in rappresentanza del Canton Ticino nell’ambito del Jazz Festival di Lugano lo Swiss Jazz Contest. Con il gruppo egli ha anche registrato. Ha composto sia per il jazz che per la musica classica. Ha insegnato all’Accademia di Musica della Svizzera Italiana.

Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. 16/12/1933.

Ha studiato per un breve periodo il clarinetto e dopo aver provato a suonare una chitarra in un negozio ha deciso che quello sarebbe stato il suo strumento. Ha preso lezioni da Jerry Condorato un chitarrista emigrato da Napoli, che gli ha insegnato l’uso del plettro. Influenzato da Oscar Moore e da Django Reinhardt ha iniziato la carriera a 18 anni nell’area di di Pittsburg. Dopo il servizio militare ha frequentato la Dunquesne University e quindi si è trasferito a New York. Nel 1962 ha fatto parte del quintetto di George Shearing per due anni e vi è tornato poi nel 1971. Ha iniziato a comporre e nel 1965 si è stabilito a Los Angeles, dove ha lavorato nei club. Dal 1986 al 1995 ha lavorato con Frank Sinatra e come freelance in tutto il mondo. chiusura
