ADAMS GEORGE RUFUS (ANCE-VC)

Covington, Georgia. 29/4/1940. – New York, 14/11/1992.

Ha iniziato la carriera accompagnando musicisti di blues in vari club, nel frattempo ha studiato con molta passione il flauto con Wayman Carver presso il Clark College di Atlanta. Nel 1973 ha suonato con il gruppo di Roy Haynes e qui ha attirato l’attenzione di Charles Mingus che lo ha voluto nel suo gruppo, dove è restato sino al 1976, registrando anche diversi dischi importanti. Ha fatto anche parte dei gruppi di Art Blakey, Sam Cooke, McCoy Tyner, Gil Evans, ha diretto suoi gruppi dei quali il più celebre è stato quello messo su insieme al pianista Don Pullen ed il batterista Dannie Richmond. In seguito ha suonato con Sam Cooke, Eddie Baccus, Bill Doggett, Hank Marr. In qualche occasione ha dimostrato di essere anche un ottimo cantante, oltre che suonatore di basso e di fagotto. Musicista profondamente legato alla tradizione afroamericana. Solista molto legato al blues, e questo risalta soprattutto quando si impegna nel canto. Musicista legato alla tradizione e nello stesso tempo al moderno. Dal 1991 è stato colpito da una polmonite, malgrado ciò ha continuato a suonare ed a fare tournée. Il suo periodo migliore è stato quello che lo ha visto far parte del gruppo di Mingus. Dopo la morte di Mingus ha collaborato con la “Mingus Dinasty”.

Cantante dalla voce energica e duttile e dal tono profondo in grado di spaziare dal soul al blues, anche notevole nelle ballad. Nato nei gruppi gospel è balzato alla ribalta nel 1959 ed è giunto a piena maturazione nel 1980. “Tancanary” (canarino abbronzato, così veniva con affettuoso umorismo) ha cantato con Bessie Griffin e tra la fine degli anni ’50 e l’inizio dei ’60 è stato famoso nel R&B di New Orleans.

Da adolescente, Kris ha cantato in un teatro per bambini itinerante e ha avuto i suoi primi concerti professionali all’età di 19 anni ad Hartford, cantando in una band di jazz latino di cui faceva parte il defunto sassofonista Tom Chapin. Ha frequentato il Berklee College of Music e il New England Conservatory.

Cantante che si è affermata giovanissima. Mezza asiatica e mezza europea, dallo stile tipicamente occidentale. Voce che evita sonorità esotiche molto alla moda, ma propone rimodellata la canzone classica ed è soprattutto nel jazz che si esprime meglio. Dal tono di voce delicato, quasi infantile, con sfumature delicatissime e romantici toni, nell’ambito del mainstream e la fusion.
