ALTSCHUL BARRY (DR-PERC)

New York 6/1/1943.

Ha ricevuto una formazione musicale già in famiglia, studiando pianoforte e clarino che in seguito abbandonerà per la batteria. Ha frequentato Charlie Persip, Sam Ulano, Lee Konitz, ha suonato nel suo quartiere, il South Bronx, con i suoi amici Charles Tolliver, Junior Cook, Elmo Hope. Nel 1964 è entrato nel gruppo di Paul Bley, poi con Carmell Jones, Leo Wright (1967) Hampton Hawes, Sonny Criss, (1969) Tony Scott. Nel 1970 ha formato un trio con Chick Corea e Dave Holland, che con Anthony Braxton diventa il Circle. Ha inciso anche con Sam Rivers, Alan Silva, John Surman, Annette Peacock, Peter Warren, Dave Liebman, Roswell Rudd, Andrew Hill, Julius Hemphill, Pepper Adams, John Lindberg (1982) Kenny Drew, Franco D’Andrea (1983). Batterista importante della prima generazione del free jazz. Gli viene riconosciuto il merito di aver elaborato insieme ad altri musicisti la formula del free bop. Ha suonato tutti i tipi di jazz con grande disinvoltura, musicista dall’uso particolare di due casse ed una vasta gamma di effetti timbrici con i piatti.

Ha studiato alla California State University. Ha debuttato professionalmente suonando nel 1967 con Stan Kenton, poi con Don Ellis (1969) Gerald Wilson, Nat Adderley, Willie Bobo, Chuck Mangione, Louie Bellson, ed altri. Ha anche collaborato con Frank Zappa e Duke Person. Ha partecipato a varie manifestazioni internazionali, ed anche in televisione.

ALVAREZ CHICO ALFRED (TP).

Montreal, Canada. 3/2/1920. – Las Vegas, 1/10/1992.

Studia per diversi anni a Los Angeles dove entra a far parte dell’ambiente musicale, acquistando la notorietà quando viene ingaggiato da Stan Kenton, nella cui orchestra suona dal 1941 al 1951. Decennio per lui ricco di soddisfazioni perché avrà modo di esprimere al meglio la sua versatilità e aggressività che bene si sposavano con il “progressive jazz” kentoniano. Lasciato Kenton, ha suonato con Charlie Barnet, con Red Norvo, con Benny Carter. Dopo il 1960 ha accompagnato prima Ella Fitzgerald e poi Sarah Vaughan. Nel 1985 ha suonato con la Las Vegas Jazz Band. Negli ultimi tempi si è dedicato quasi completamente alla musica latino americana.

ALVARO ROMERO (P).

Genova, 1908.

Pianista, violinista e cantante. Ha iniziato a lavorare con il maestro Tullio Mobilia nel 1927. Nel 1934 ha suonato il pianoforte ed il violino a Milano con il piccolo gruppo di Gorni Kramer. Ha suonato anche con Piero Cottiglieli, nel 1940 ha messo su il Quintetto Fantasma con il quale ha registrato anche dei dischi. In seguito ha lasciato il jazz per la musica commerciale. Musicista che avrebbe potuto avere una carriera più brillante se non fosse stato condizionato da un carattere eccessivamente eccentrico.

ALVES HELIO (P).

San Paolo, Brasile. 1966.

Figlio di pianisti, si è trasferito a 18 anni a Boston dove ha frequentato il Berklee College of Music. Ha 24 anni è andato a New York dove ha iniziato a lavorare nei club. Pianista molto eclettico, le sue esperienze vanno dalla musica brasiliana, a contaminazioni afrocubane al il jazz moderno. Ha collaborato con Airto Moreira, con Flora Purin, con Oscar Castro-Neves, con Claudio Roditi, con Paquito D’Rivera, Santi Debriano e con Joe Henderson. Pianista molto virtuoso ed in possesso di una tecnica limpida.

Musicista brasiliano trapiantato a Parigi. Ha iniziato la sua attività come pianista esibendosi con il trio Camara. Durante una tournée in giro per la Francia ha abbandonato il pianoforte per dedicarsi a basso, strumento che non abbandonerà più. Ha suonato con Jean-Pierre Mas, Martial Solal, Marius Costant, con Eric Le Man nel 1982, Jean-Louis Chautemps, Charlie Mariano, Joe Henderson, Philips Catherine, Jasper Van’t Hof, Joachim Kuhn, George Gruntz, Franco Ambrosetti, Lee Konitz, Michel Portal. Nel 1985 è ritornato al vecchio amore, il pianoforte, costituendo un suo gruppo, il “Cesarius Alvin Connection”. Bassista ricercatissimo in Francia, dalla grande precisione ritmica, come pianista si attribuisce la successione di Bill Evans.

Ha iniziato la carriera a diciassette anni accompagnando la cantante Sophie Tucker, voce nota come l’ultima delle “Red-Hot Thomas”. Nel 1922 si è trasferito a Chicago suonando in varie orchestre, anche di musica commerciale, come quelle dirette da Frankie Quartell e quella di Charlie Straight. Ha fatto parte delle orchestre da ballo di grande fama come quella di Ted Fiorito e Wayne King. Dal 1930 al 1933 ha diretto un suo gruppo, per tre anni ha accompagnato Art Hodes. Nel 1936 è tornato a New York suonando con Wingy Manone, nel 1937 con Joe Marsala, con Georg Brunis al “Nick’s, dal 1942 al 1944, con George Brunies nel 1946, con Eddie Condon, Bobby Hackett, Brad Gowans, Mezz Mezzrow, con Doc Evans nel 1947, con George Zack nel 1948, Buck Clayton, Teddy Wilson. Nel 1950 ha diretto i suoi “Kings of Dixieland”. Dal 1955 è stato proprietario di un suo Club. Batterista dal ritmo vigoroso che ricorda molto quello di Zutty Singleton.

Cantante e chitarrista affermatosi negli anni ’80. A Los Angeles Insieme a suo fratello Dave è cresciuto all’ombra della musica di Elvin Presley, T-Bone Walker e Big Joe Turner. Sempre con il fratello nel 1979 fonda il gruppo dei Blasters. Nel 1985 lascia la musica per studiare e laurearsi in scienze matematiche. Nel 1986 riprende la professione come solista, suona con Sun Ra e fa parte della Dirty Dozen Brass Band. In seguito oltre ad una riedizione dei Blasters, fa parte dei Faultline Syncopators un gruppo di jazz tradizionale.

Inizia la carriera suonando la batteria con Jelly Roll Morton, in seguito passa alla tuba con Earl Hines (1928) Joe Marsala, Jimmy Noone (1931). Successivamente è passato al basso con i Mills Blue Rhythm Band (1934) Duke Ellington (1935) Benny Carter, Bobby Burnett, Louis Armstrong (1941) Joe Sullivan. Per un certo periodo si è occupa di arredamento ed ha studiato da odontotecnico, per poi ritornare nel 1958 con Wilbur de Paris, Jay McShan (1970) Tiny Grimes. Suonatore di basso, robusto e pieno di grinta.

Dagli anni ’50 ha iniziato a lavorare nel territorio di Philadelphia, nel 1963 ha registrato con Mel Tormé. Ha suonato con Woody Herman, con Red Rodney e con Charlie Ventura. Per un certo periodo è stato il pianista titolare al Red Hill Inn di Pennsauken nel New Jersey e nel 1960 si è esibito al Capocabana di New York. Colpito da una tendinite alle mani per il troppo lavoro, è stato inattivo dal 1967 sino al 1995. In seguito però ha potuto riprendere a lavorare saltuariamente. Si è impegnato nella composizione, ha scritto per il cinema ed ha pubblicato anche libri sulle varie tecniche.

Elio, Alberto e Sergio, tre fratelli siciliani, rispettivamente pianista, bassista e batterista. Elio è il leader del gruppo, ha 27 anni, polistrumentista anche se è il trombone il suo strumento. Alberto 25 anni e Sergio 21 anni. Risiedono a Canicattini in provincia di Siracusa. Hanno ricevuto le prime lezioni di musica dal direttore della banda del paese, in seguito Elio e Alberto studiano al conservatorio, mentre Sergio studia percussione da insegnanti privati. Nel 1979 mettono su il trio e nel 1980 suonano per la prima volta in pubblico e nel 1987 partecipano al Festival di Acireale.

Nel 1918 è andato a New York per completare la sua cultura musicale. Ha lavorato in orchestrine di teatri ed ha organizzato dei piccoli gruppi per i club locali. Rientrato definitivamente a Londra nel 1922, ha messo su un gruppo per il famoso Embassy Club e poi per il Mayfair Hotel. Ha costituito un’orchestra con diversi musicisti americani ed i migliori inglesi dell’epoca, ottenendo un grande successo. Anche se considerata una orchestra da ballo di alto livello, ha inciso anche apprezzabili dischi di jazz, ed è considerata l’unica orchestra europea dell’epoca che può reggere il confronto con quelle americane.

Musicista Svizzero emerso negli anni ’50. Fa parte del gruppo di alto sassofonisti che si sono distinti per aver meglio recepito il messaggio di Charlie Parker. Ha suonato con Julian Adderley, Donald Byrd, Dexter Gordon. Ha diretto per molti anni un quintetto nel quale si sono alternati i migliori solisti svizzeri, ed è stato uno dei creatori del Festival di Lugano. Musicista importante nel quadro del jazz europeo.
