Chitarrista italo americano, si è diplomato al New England Conservatory di Boston. Ha suonato ed inciso con Eddie Gomez, Joey Baron, Tom Harrell, Anita Gravine nel 1982. Musicista dallo swing delicato, pulito e dalla tecnica sopraffina, chiamato anche ad accompagnare voci quali: Nancy Harrow nel 1988, Margharet Whiting nel 1990, Mark Murphy nel 1991, Anita Gravine nel 1997.

Celebre strada di New Orleans, famosa nella storia del jazz anche per il blues che porta il suo nome; blues che è stato scritto dal pianista Spencer Williams e la cui più celebre versione è quella incisa nel 1928 dagli Hot Five di Louis Armstrong. Questa strada è ubicata da Canal Street e Congo Square (attuale Beauregard Square). Ha dato anche il nome al celebre locale di New York, aperto dal 1950 al 1970, sito al 209 West 51th Street.

Cantante dalla voce sensuale, dal timbro pieno di contrasti. Essa è stata espressione della parte più vitale del soul di St.Louis. E’ stata moglie di Lester Bowie, nelle varie collaborazioni avute con lui ha dimostrato di sapersi ben adattare ad un contesto jazz così complesso. Ha inciso un album con l’Art Ensemble of Chicago.

BASS MARTHA (VC)

St.Louis, Missouri, 1927. – U.S.A.2001.

Madre di Fontella e di David Peaton ai quali ha trasmesso la passione per il canto gospel. Ancora ragazza è diventata la pupilla di Mother Smith, considerata giustamente la più grande cantante gospel di St.Louis per le sue affinità vocali e bluesy. Negli anni ’50 ha fatto parte del gruppo “The Famous Ward Singers” nel quale ha avuto il ruolo di prima voce solista. In rimasta delusa dall’ambiente si è ritirata dalla carriera per cantare nelle chiese della sua St.Louis. Negli anni ’70 ha ripreso l’attività con il gruppo “From The Roots To The Source”, con il quale ha inciso ed ha effettuato varie tournée. La sua ultima apparizione nel dicembre del 1992. E’ morta nell’ottobre del 1998, il suo ultimo viaggio è stato accompagnato da un coro gospel di 300 persone nella cattedrale di St.Louis. Oltre ad essere una cantante è stata anche una brava arrangiatrice ed ha scritto diversi brani gospel, tra i quali i più celebri “These Are They” e “Just Over The Hill” portati al successo da Mahalia Jackson.

In seguito ha collaborato con Bennie Green, Jackie McLean, Art Blakey, Sinny Rollins, con Bobby Timmons nel 1965, Gloria Lynne. Nel 1968 è tornato con i Jazz Messengers, poi ha suonato con Freddie Hubbard, Billy Eckstine, Mirian Makeba, Duke Jordan, David Amram, Jakie Byard. Ottimo solista ed anche ottimo compositore.

Cotogno, Milano. 11/4/1952.

Ha studiato musica sin dalla tenera età, il pianoforte classico sin dagli undici anni ed a quattordici la chitarra classica. A diciassette anni ha suonato in piccoli gruppi in locali da ballo ed in gruppi rock. Nel 1964 si è accostato al jazz, ha esordito al Festival delle Nuove Tendenze nel 1975 tenutosi all’Università di Milano e l’anno successivo ha partecipato ad Umbria Jazz ed ad altre manifestazioni. Ha fondato il gruppo “Open Form Trio”. Ha accompagnato Bobby Watson negli ultimi concerti italiani. In possesso di una notevole tecnica, in lui si incontrano il blues e il gospel. Negli ultimi anni si è dedicato soprattutto all’insegnamento.

Nella sua vita artistica predominano le collaborazioni con musicisti attivi nell’ambito della bossa nova, Joao Gilberto, Sergio Mendez ed altri, ma ha anche registrato nel campo del jazz con Stan Getz nel 1976, con Freddie Hubbard nel 1979, con Teo Macero nel 1983.
