ABERCROMBIE JOHN (G)

Affascinato dalla musica sin dai primi anni di scuola, ha iniziato suonando in gruppi rock da autodidatta. Ascoltando Miles Davis e Dave Brubeck, ha poi deciso di approfondire gli studi presso la Berkley College of Music. Lo studio della chitarra lo ha applicato ascoltando Barney Kessel e poi Jim Hall e, nel 1967, ha ottenuto la sua prima scrittura con John Hammond Smith e in un gruppo chiamato “Dream” nel 1969. Trasferitosi a New York si è fatto meglio apprezzare ed ha suonato ed inciso con Chico Hamilton, McCoy Tyner, Gato Barbieri, Stanley Clark, Roy Hynes, Jeremy Steig, Gil Evans, Jack DeJohnette, Enrico Rava, Charles Earland, Kenny Wheeler, John Scofield, Ralph Towner. Ha messo su un suo trio con Marc Johnson e Peter Erskine e ha accompagnato Michel Petrucciani in una tournée europea. Ha dedicato molta parte del suo tempo all’insegnamento. Chitarrista moderno, molto intenso e potente, il suo percorso musicale si snoda attraverso atmosfere ricercate e un dialogo fitto e costante con i membri del suo gruppo. Nella sua musica vi è una perfetta sintesi tra le idee di Jim Hall, Bill Evans ed una certa tradizione, e questo gli dà un impeto maggiore. In qualche occasione ha suonato anche il mandolino.

All’età di dieci anni ha iniziato a studiare la fisarmonica passando al sassofono tenore. Ha iniziato la carriera a Uppsala nel gruppo di Bosse Broberg nel 1962, ha suonato poi con Gugge Hedrenius, con Jan Johansson, con Arne Domnerus, dal 1969 al 1971 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Red Mitchell. Nel 1967 ha suonato nel gruppo che organizzava il “Radiojazzgruppen”, quindi egli ne è diventato leader dall’inizio degli anni ’80. Nel 1992 ha lavorato con Bobo Stenson, con George Russell, Bob Brookmeyer, Lars Gullin, Ed Thigpen. Sassofonista dotato di una ottima tecnica, molto influenzato da Coltrane e da Wayne Shorter, più nel feeling che nello stile.

L’ascolto, guidato dal nonno batterista, di alcune registrazioni di Stan Getz e di Dave Brubeck, hanno inciso notevolmente sulle sue scelte. Ha ascoltato Jimi Hendrix e ha deciso di studiare la chitarra. Nel 1982 si è trasferito a Los Angeles per studiare con Joe Diorio, Carl Schroeder, Ron Eschete. Ha studiato anche al Guitar Institute of Technology. Nel 1988 si è trasferito a Boston dove ha studiato improvvisazione con il sassofonista Jerry Bergonzi. Tornato nel 1990 a Detroit ha suonato con Marcus Belgrave, Harold McKinney, James Carter, David McMurray, Roy Brooks, Straight Ahead, Leonard King e altri. Ha diretto anche suoi gruppi. Ha effettuato molte tournée negli Stati Uniti ed in Europa. Ha anche lavorato per il cinema e la televisione. Nel 2003 si è trasferito a New York, dove ha guadagnato rapidamente consensi e molte collaborazioni e registrazioni con: Cindy Blackman, Carlton Holmes, Dwayne Burno, Allen Farnham, Sean Smith, Tomoko Ohno, Chip Jackson, Ugonna Okegwo, Dion Parson, Ted Rosenthal, David Williams Daoud, Calvin Hill, Bradford Hayes, Charles Davis, Michael Cochrane, The Spirit of Life Ensemble e la cantante brasiliana Yashmin Carnet.

Completati gli studi alla Manhattan School Of Music ha iniziato a suonare in una banda militare. L’attività vera e propria è iniziata nel trio di Eddie Gibbs nel 1947. In seguito ha suonato e registrato con Snub Mosley nel 1948, con Wilbur DeParis nel 1948, con Bill Harris nel 1951, con Chuck Wayne nel 1952, poi con le orchestre di Sy Oliver e quella di Louie Bellson. Per le sue particolari doti di accompagnatore è diventato partner ideale per diversi cantanti; infatti è stato partner tra gli altri di Thelma Carpenter nel 1954, di Carmen McRae e di Ella Fitzgerald con la quale ha fatto anche una tournée con la Jazz At The Philarmonic nel 1950. In seguito ha lavorato nei programmi alla radio e si è dedicato in particolar modo a comporre musiche per film. Ottimo accompagnatore, soprattutto per cantanti, nello stile si rifà ad Art Tatum con qualche spunto più moderno.
ABOU-KHALIL RABIH (FL-OUD)
Beirut, Libano. 17/8/1957.
Musicista libanese, giunto in Germania nel 1978, dopo essere fuggito dalla patria in piena guerra civile. Suonatore di “oud” (in arabo “el’ud”, in italiano ”Il Legno”) strumento a quindici corde che importato dall’oriente dette vita nel nostro continente al liuto. Questo strumento aveva fatto la prima comparsa nel jazz in un album di Phil Woods (Greek Cooking, del 1967) ma è stato proprio Abou-Khalil a dargli la dimora ufficiale nel 1984. La sua musica anche conservando le caratteristiche folcloristiche della sua terra, trascende ogni catalogazione. Essa si sviluppa tra la tradizione araba, jazz americano e composizione classica europea, senza essere legata indissolubilmente a nessuna di esse, offrendo anche momenti affascinanti.

E’ stato per molti anni uno dei pilastri alla Preservation Hall di New Orleans. Alla bella età di 94 anni egli ha continuato ad esibirsi nel puro idioma jazzistico della migliore tradizione.

Si è fatto notare soprattutto come cantante in vari piccoli gruppi locali. Negli anni’ 70 si è rivelato anche un buon batterista ed ha iniziato ad accompagnare cantanti e ballerini. Divenuto uno dei componenti di un trio che ha accompagnato prima Sarah Vaughan e poi Nancy Wilson. Nel 1975 si é trasferito in Inghilterra dove ha suonato ed inciso con John Taylor, Ronnie Scott, Chris Hunter, Jazz Afrika, Dudu Pukwana’s Zila e il Johnny Dyani’s Witchdoctor’s Son and Brotherhood of Breath. Nel 1980 è stato alla testa di un proprio gruppo. Nel 1988 è entrato nel gruppo di Dollar Brand, va poi con Jim Pepper. Ha registrato con Dewey Redman, Mal Waldron, Archie Shepp, Annie Ross, Courtney Pine. Ha diretto seminari sulla musica africana in Europa ed in Scandinavia. Grande ammiratore di Roach e Blakey, profondamente ispirato da Ellington e Monk.

Musicista di rottura affermatosi all’inizio del nuovo secolo. Membro di un gruppo minimalista, ha suonato una musica che si è caratterizzata per la libertà di espressione e di composizione, una musica strana, misteriosa ma anche bella.

Espletato il servizio militare, ha iniziato la sua carriera nei club della 52a strada aiutato dal fratello Ray sassofonista tenore. Nei club della 52a ha avuto la possibilità di incontrare i migliori “boppers” del momento e suonare insieme a loro. In seguito ha fatto parte dei gruppi di Roy Eldridge dal 1946 al 1947, ha registrato con Joe Thomas, ha suonato con Coleman Hawkins, con Jay Jay Johnson, con Eddie Heywood nel 1948, con Andy Kirk, è andato in tournée con il gruppo di Hot Lips Page, con Eddie Lockjaw Davis nel 1950, con Illinois Jacquet nel 1951, con Oscar Pettiford dal 1952 al 1953. Ha registrato anche con Wynton Kelly nel 1951, con Illinois Jacquet nel 1951, con Lester Young dal 1952 al 1953, con Al Haig e con Duke Jordan nel 1954. E’ apparso anche in un film insieme a Joe Albany, sulla vita di quest’ultimo. Nel 1980 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra diretta dal fratello.
