Pontiac, Michigan. 28/3/1923. – Copenhagen, Danimarca. 21/8/1986.
Fratello di Hank e Elvin, trombettista autodidatta sin dall’età di tredici anni. Nel 1939 insieme a Hank ha suonato nell’Arcadia Club Band, di cui suo zio William era il direttore. Nel 1941 ha suonato con Connie Connell, poi Sonny Stitt, Jack Teagarden e Bill Hood. Nel 1946 è entrato nell’orchestra di Charlie Young, di cui ha assunto in seguito la direzione alla morte di Young. A Denver ha suonato con Shelly Rhym, nello spettacolo ”Smart Affair”. Sino al 1953 ha diretto un suo gruppo, ha collaborato con Billy Mitchell, dal 1954 al 1955 con Charles Mingus e nel 1954 è entrato nell’orchestra di Count Basie, di cui è diventato un importante solista e soprattutto il principale arrangiatore, restandovi sino al 1963. Ha inciso anche con Coleman Hawkins, Quincy Jones, Thelonious Monk, Art Farmer, George Russell, Horace Parlan, Sonny Rollins, nella Concert Jazz Band di Gerry Mulligan ed ha organizzato un quintetto insieme a Pepper Adams. Nel 1965 ha diretto insieme a Mel Lewis una grande orchestra, dove ha messo a frutto le sue ottime qualità di arrangiatore. La big band si è esibita per anni al Village Vanguard creando un jazz moderno che teneva conto di tutte le esperienze passate. Dell’orchestra hanno fatto parte grandi solisti, tra i quali Pepper Adams, Jerome Richardson, Joe Farrell, Roland Hanna, Billy Harper, Richard Davis ed altri. Nel 1978 in Jugoslavia si è ferito ad un labbro e ci sono volute varie operazioni per sistemarlo, ma non è ritornato più lo stesso solista. Nel 1979 ha lasciato l’orchestra a Mel Lewis e si è stabilito a Copenaghen dove ha diretto un’orchestra della radio Danese ed ha insegnato al Conservatorio. Ha diretto una big band l’”Eclipse”, alla quale egli si è dedicato con molta passione. Dal 1984 al 1986 è tornato negli Stati Uniti per dirigere l’orchestra del suo vecchio maestro Count Basie. E’ stato un personaggio singolare nell’ambito dell’hardbop, ed un musicista completo. Ha preferito suonare più la cornetta che la tromba classica, dalla quale egli traeva un suono che giudicava troppo aspro, mentre spesso a capo della sua orchestra preferiva suonare il flicorno, del quale è stato un solista molto lirico, dalla voce calda. Arrangiatore dalla notevole personalità, si esprimeva con forza ed efficacia, con gusto tradizionale, ben inserendo gli interventi solistici nella compattezza armonica dell’orchestra.

Ha iniziato a studiare la tromba a 11 anni e un anno dopo la batteria. A 17 anni ha frequentato i corsi di Jazzmobile e ha suonato in un gruppo locale di ryhthm-and-blues. Dal 1974 al 1977 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Lou Donaldson, ha partecipato a varie tournée in America ed in Africa con Jimmy McGriff e con Brother Jack McDuff. Alla fine degli anni’70 ha suonato con Jimmy Ponder ed al 1978 al 1981 ha fatto un tour internazionale con Stan Getz. Ha guidato una sua orchestra la “Skiline” alla metà degli anni ’80. In seguito ha suonato freelance con James Moody, Richie Cole, Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Clarke, Stanley Turrentine, Masabumi Kikushi, DIzzy Gillespie, Ed Schuller, la cantante Chaka Khan, dal 1989m al 1992 con Michel Petrucciani, ha registrato nel 1994 con il sassofonista Nicholas Simion, con Little Jimmy Scott, ha fatto parte del C.A.F.E.Trio. Ha insegnato alla New School for Social Research, di New York dal 1989 al 1991.

Con la famiglia si è trasferito a Wollongong, nel New South Walles e nel 1955, conservando però la cittadinanza scozzese. Ha suonato e cantato in gruppi soul e di rhythm-and-blues a Sidney, Geelong e Melbourne e nel 1970 ha iniziato a fare del jazz. E’ diventato un musicista famoso a Melbourne e ha partecipato a molte manifestazioni e suonato nei club di tutta l’Australia ed anche in Europa. Vive in Australia e spesso ha soggiornato negli Stati Uniti. Buon trombettista, anche se egli preferisce cantare. Il suo ispiratore sembra essere Mark Murphy, anche se i suoi idoli sono Sinatra e Tormè. Comunque anche con questo cocktail di ispirazioni, si dimostra un buon crooning con discreta personalità.

Ha debuttato con l’orchestra di Lionel Hampton nel 1960, con la quale ha anche registrato ed è rimasto sino al 1963. Ha registrato anche con Milt Jackson, con Roland Kirk e nel marzo del 1965 con il gruppo di Archie Sheep al Village Vanguard. Nel 1965 ha suonato con Frank Foster, poi con John Hammond dal 1966 al 1967, con Ray Charles ed è stato attivo negli studi di New York, con Rusty Bryant, Charles Earland, Charles Kynard, Harold Mabern, Idris Muhammad, Don Patterson, Sonny Phillips, Melvin Sparks, con l’organista Leon Spencer e Sonny Stitt. All’inizio degli anni ’70 ha suonato con Clark Terry ed ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Thad Jones-Mel Lewis e della Foster’s Loud Minotity. Nel 1975 ha fatto una tournée con Billy Harper e nell’attività freelance ha collaborato con Harold Vick, Mike Longo, Houston Person, ha fatto parte del gruppo “Dameronia”, ha suonato con Dakota Staton ed ha fatto una tournée in Europa ed in Giappone con la Dizzy Gillespie Big Band. Ha registrato anche con la Larry Ridley’s Jazz Legacy Ensemble nel 1989. Ha suonato regolarmente con la American Jazz Orchestra, con la Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra e con la big band di Illinois Jacquet, con McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Heath, Joe Henderson, Shirley Scott, Ruth Brown, Teddy Edwards e Larry Ridley.
JONES WALLACE LEON (TR).
Baltimora, Maryland. 16/11/1906. – New York. 23/3/1983.
Ha debuttato nel 1928 con gli Harmony Birds di Ike Dixon e nel 1931 si è trasferito a New York dove è entrato nell’orchestra del cugino Chick Webb. Ha suonato poi con Willie Bryant dal 1936 al 1938. Ha suonato con Putney Dandridge e subito dopo è diventato la prima tromba di Duke Ellington, con il quale è rimasto sino al 1944. Nel 1945 ha suonato con Benny Carter, poi con Snub Mosley, con John Kirby. Nonostante la sua collaborazione nell’orchestra di Ellington sia stata ottima, il suo vero valore è stato evidenziato soprattutto come accompagnatore di Putney Dandridge.
JONES WARDELL ”PREACHER” (TR).
U.S.A.1905.
Ha debuttato nel 1929 con il gruppo dei Brownies di Bill Brown, che si esibisce all’Alhambra Ballroom di New York. Ha suonato poi con Benny Carter che in quel periodo si esibisce con il suo gruppo allo Arcadian Ballroom. Ha suonato poi con Bingie Madison e nel 1930 è entrato nella Mills Blue Rhythm Band e vi è rimasto sino al 1936. Lo stesso anno ha suonato con Fats Waller e nel 1938 con Hot Lips Page. Dopo il 1940 non si conosce quali sia stata la sua attività.
JONES WILLIE WILLIAM, JR. (DR).
Brooklyn, New York. 20/10/1929. – New York. Aprile, 1991.
Musicista quasi del tutto autodidatta e per lui è stato molto importante iniziare l’attività con Thelonious Monk, con il quale ha suonato e registrato sino al 1953. In seguito ha suonato con Cecil Payne, Charlie Parker, con Kenny Dorham, Jay Jay Johnson. Ha inciso con Elmo Hope e con Randy Weston. Nel 1955 è entrato nel gruppo del primo Jazz Workshop di Charles Mingus, con il quale ha registrato album rimasti famosi come il “Phitecanthropus Erectus” nel 1956. E’ stato il batterista di Lester Young dal 1956 al 1959 e con lui ha suonato al Cafè Bohemia nel dicembre del 1956. Ha suonato anche con Jimmy Forrest, ha registrato a Chicago con Sun Ra nel 1961.
JONES WILLIE III. (DR).

Willie Jones III ha compiuto i primi passi nella musica sotto la guida del padre, il pianista Willie Jones II. Dopo aver studiato privatamente la batteria durante l’adolescenza, ha ottenuto una borsa di studio completa per frequentare il California Institute of the Arts, presso cui ha avuto modo di studiare con Albert “Tootie” Heath. E’ stato semifinalista al Thelonious Monk Jazz Drum Competition del 1992. In precedenza è stato uno degli animatori del gruppo Black Note, gruppo che si è aggiudicato nel 1991 il primo premio al concorso John Coltrane Young Artist Competition e con la quale Jones ha inciso quattro cd: “43rd & Degnan” e “L.A. Underground” (World Stage Records) “Jungle Music” (Columbia) e “Nothin’ But the Swing” (Impulse!) ed ha compiuto inoltre tours in USA ed Europa e ha suonato in apertura dei concerti di Wynton Marsalis. Nel 1994 ha suonato con Milt Jackson e dal 1995 fino a tutto il 1998 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Arturo Sandoval, con il quale ha inciso “Hot House” (N2K) disco vincitore di un Grammy Award. In seguito ha inciso con Horace Silver l’album “Jazz Has a Sense of Humor” (Impulse!) e con Roy Hargrove “Moment To Moment” e “Hard Groove” (Verve) oltre a “Here” (Max Jazz) di Eric Reed. Dal 1998 è un componente del Roy Hargrove Quintet. Jones ha inoltre realizzato due dischi come leader, nel 2000 “Vol 1…Straight Swingin'” (WJ3) e nel 2002 “Vol II…Don’t Knock The Swing”. Ha collaborato anche con Eric Reed, Kurt Elling e Hank Jones.
JONES AND COLLINS ASTORIA HOT EIGHT.
Gruppo di New Orleans guidato dal cornettista Lee Collins e dal sassofonista David Jones. E’ stato a lungo il gruppo fisso all’Astoria Gardens della città dal 1928. Altri componenti del gruppo sono stati il trombonista Nat Story, il clarinettista Big Eye Louis Nelson, l’alto sassofonista Theodore Purnell, il pianista Joseph Robinchaux, il banjonista Emanuel Sayles, il bassista Al Morgan ed il batterista Joe Strode. In seguito Sidney Arodin ha preso il posto di Nelson. Si è esibito anche nel 1929 alla Italian Hall di New Orleans.
JOODE WILBERT DE. (B).
Amsterdam, Olanda. 11/5/1955.
Ha iniziato la carriera suonando la chitarra elettrica in un gruppo di musica di consumo a 19 anni ed ha iniziato a suonare il basso elettrico nel 1982. Nel 1986 il primo impegno importante con il gruppo del violinista Ig Henneman, poi ha suonato con il trio Ab Baars nel 1989 e nel 1991 ha suonato in tournée ed ha registrato con Dennis Charles. Nel 1996 ha suonato in trio con Charles Gayle e Sunny Murray. Spesso ha suonato in Olanda con Eric Boeren. Musicista molto richiesto e stimato nel circuito olandese.
JOOS HERBERT (TR).
Karlsruhe. Germania. 21/3/1940.
Ha studiato contrabbasso al Conservatorio della sua città sino al 1958. Ha iniziato a suonare la tromba da autodidatta. All’inizio degli anni ’60 ha fatto parte del Modern Jazz Quintett Karlsrhue ed ha iniziato a fare hard bop e free jazz. Ha partecipato al Baden-Baden Free Jazz Meeting e al NDR Jazz Workshop del 1974. Ha collaborato con i “Free Sound and Super Bass”, dal 1976 al 1976 ha diretto insieme a Hans Koller e Wolfgang Dauner, con il “Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart” e nel 1980 con la Vienna Art Orchestra. Ha diretto un suo quartetto con il pianista Paul Schwartz, il bassista Jurgen Wuchner ed il batterista Joe Koinzer, il New Jazz Ensemble, con il quale ha suonato del free jazz da camera, con molte influenze cool e con il quale ha fatto anche un tour in Africa. Musicista dotato di grande senso estetico che ha trasmesso alla sua musica.

JOPLIN SCOTT. (P).
Texarkana, Texas. 24/11/1869. – New York. 1/4/1917.
Musicista autodidatta, ha iniziato a suonare all’età di sette anni. Ha viaggiato molto ascoltando diversi pianisti di ragtime, dai quali ha appreso il modo di suonare questo tipo di musica ed ha arricchito la sua tecnica di molti spunti che gli sono serviti inseguito anche nella sua carriera di compositore. Ha iniziato a suonare ragtime a Sedalia nel Middlewest. Poi nel 1885 si è trasferito a St. Louis dove ha iniziato anche la sua attività di compositore. E’ arrivato alla notorietà nel 1889 quando gli hanno pubblicato la sua prima composizione l’”Original Drag”. Egli ha composto più di seicento ragtimes, fra i quali il più celebre è senz’altro il ”Maple Leaf Rag”. In seguito si è trasferito a New York dove ha pubblicato ”Treemonisha”, una miscela di ragtime, musica folcloristica negra e musica europea, opera messa male in scena che è diventata un fiasco. Si è ammalato nel 1917, è stato ricoverato al Ward’s Island Ospital dove poco dopo è deceduto. Pianista romantico, ottimo conoscitore della tradizione musicale europea che è riuscito fondere perfettamente con il ritmo dei neri. E’ stato uno dei primi e più famosi pianisti ed un grande compositore di ragtimes. Le sue opere sono state rivalutate in maniera perfetta da Gunter Shuller.
