E’ nato da Willie Armstrong e da Mary Ann, chiamata familiarmente Mayann, nella popolosa e popolare strada di New Orleans la James Alley, altrimenti conosciuta con il nome di “Campo di Battaglia”. I genitori si sono separati poco prima della sua nascita, ed egli è stato allevato inizialmente dalla nonna materna Josephine ed in seguito dalla madre alla quale era legato da affetto profondo. E’ cresciuto tra le umiliazioni della più sfacciata segregazione razziale, queste difficili condizioni di vita hanno plasmato e temprato il suo carattere ed a convincerlo di poter contare soprattutto e solo su se stesso. Nel 1912 è stato internato nel riformatorio la Colored Waifs’Home, per aver esploso un colpo di pistola durante un Capodanno, ma soprattutto per i suoi precedenti penali, vi è rimasto per circa due anni e qui ha fatto prima parte del coro ed in seguito della banda dell’istituto nella quale suona il tamburo. Ha iniziato poi a suonare la cornetta, ha ricevuto lezioni da Peter Davis, il Direttore dell’Istituto. Lasciato il riformatorio Louis si è guadagnato da vivere facendo il fattorino nei prostiboli di Storyville e qui ha familiarizzato con il blues e lo stile dei vari famosi pianisti del quartiere a luci rosse. E’ diventato il figlioccio del più celebre cornettista di New Orleans, Joe”King”Oliver e nel 1918 raccomandato proprio da lui è stato ingaggiato nella banda di Kid Ory. Durante la permanenza nel gruppo di Ory ha iniziato ad imparare a leggere la musica e tale periodo ha costituito per lui un proficuo tirocinio. Ha fatto parte in seguito del gruppo di Fate Marable con il quale suona sui battelli del Mississippi, questo duro lavoro lo matura professionalmente. Nello stesso anno sposa Daisy Parker. Nel 1921 è tornato nella sua città per suonare con Zutty Singleton, Papa Celestin ed altri. Nel 1922 “Papa Joe” lo chiama a Chicago nella sua “Creole Jazz Band” dove è rimasto sino al 1924 e con lui darà vita ad alcune incisioni tra le più importanti nella storia del jazz. Sempre nel 1924 dopo aver divorziato dalla prima moglie, ha sposato Lil Hardin, già pianista affermata. Oltre ad aver cambiato moglie, cambia anche la sua vita artistica che si allontana sempre più dalla leggenda di New Orleans. Ha lasciato Oliver per andare prima con Ollie Powers e poi raggiungere New York ed entrare nella grande orchestra di Fletcher Henderson che aveva appena ricevuto un ingaggio al Roseland Ballroom. Con Henderson prende sempre più confidenza con il pentagramma, si è affermato come solista ed ha iniziato anche a cantare. Ha registrato con Ma Rainey, Sidney Bechet, Bessie Smith, con piccoli gruppi guidati da Clarence Williams e molti altri. Nel 1925 ha lasciato Henderson, è tornato a Chicago per riunirsi a Lil Hardin che dirigeva un gruppo al Dremland Cafè e dove ormai è ben inserito nel mondo della spettacolo, inizia a sfruttare la sua carica di simpatia, le grandi doti di intrattenitore e di cantante. Ha accettato un ingaggio nell’orchestra di Erskine Tate che suona al Vendome Theater accompagnando i film muti ed esibendosi negli intervalli. Tra il 1926 e 1927 ha diretto i “Louis Armstrong and His Stompers” per un ingaggio al Sunset Cafè. Inizialmente l’orchestra era diretta da Carroll Dickerson, quindi è passata sotto la direzione musicale del pianista Earl Hines e Louis come direttore. Ha messo sù un proprio club insieme a Hines ed a Singleton che però ha avuto una breve vita. Si chiude un ciclo (1925-1928) nel quale ha effettuato una serie di incisioni con i suoi Hot Five e gli Hot Seven, con Johnny Dodds, Kid Ory, Lil Hardin e Johnny StCyr, che sono rimaste famose, tra le quali la più mirabile il 28 giugno 1928 “West End Blues”di King Oliver. Ha sostituito la cornetta con la tromba. Nel 1928 ha inciso con il nome “Savoy Ballroom Five” ed anche di “Louis Armstrong And His Orchestras”, con la collaborazione dell’arrangiatore Don Redman. E’ entrato nella nuova orchestra di Carroll Dickerson che si esibisce al Savoy Ballroom a New York. Siamo nel 1929, ha iniziato a frequentare Alpha Smith e sempre a New York si è dedicato ad altre forme di spettacolo, ha partecipato ai dei musical e girato dei film, ha inciso anche con orchestre di organici molto commerciali. Ha iniziato la collaborazione con Zilmer Randolph, un arrangiatore pianista e trombettista nativo dell’Arkansas, in possesso di una buona scuola musicale che gli ha organizzato e lo ha diretto con orchestre che lo accompagneranno dal 1931 al 1933 e che daranno vita a registrazioni di motivi che saranno famosi e che lo seguiranno per il resto della sua attività. Con Randolph è stato legato da profonda amicizia (sarà il padrino di battesimo di uno dei suoi figli) Agli inizi del 1931, la separazione da Lil Hardin diventa pubblica. Ormai è un musicista affermato si è trasferito in California, ha messo sù una sua orchestra con la quale ha fatto una lunga tournée in Europa, dove è ritornato per un’altra tournée nel 1933, tournée molto più lunga della precedente nella quale suona anche a Torino nel 1935. Tornato in America nel 1935 ha preso come manager Joe Glaser, ha assunto la direzione dell’orchestra di Luis Russell che poi è diventata la sua orchestra. Ha inizia ad apparire sempre più spesso nei films e conclude la sua prima autobiografia “Swing That Music”. 1938 il divorzio da Lil Hardin ed il matrimonio con Alpha Smith. Nel 1940 una felice collaborazione sul set con Sidney Bechet. Nel 1942 ha divorziato dalla Smith e ha sposato Lucille Wilson. Nel 1947 ha sciolto l’orchestra per costituire gli All Stars, con i quali ha fatto molte tournée anche in Europa. Nel 1955 ha registrato un ottimo album di composizioni di Fats Waller e ha pubblicato la sua autobiografia musicale. Ne 1959 ha fatto una nuova tournée in Europa, durante la quale viene colpito da un collasso cardiaco mentre era al Festival dei Due Mondi, è stato ricoverato nell’Ospedale di Spoleto. In seguito ad un nuovo attacco cardiaco, muore nella sua casa di Corona nel sobborgo del Queens a New York il 6 luglio del 1971. La salma è stata esposta nella sala dell’armeria del 7mo reggimento della Guardia Nazionale a New York. Gli hanno reso omaggio cittadini di ogni razza e condizione sociale e giustamente gli è stata assegnata alla memoria la più alta onorificenza civile americana la “Civilian Medal Of Honor”. Musicista dalla eccezionale personalità, gli è stata imposta la maschera dello Zio Tom ed egli è stato al gioco e l’ha interpretata con tale forza e vivacità da conquistarsi il cuore di milioni di persone. Ha impersonato il negro in positivo, con la sua naturalezza, con la sua spontaneità. E’ stato uno dei personaggi del nostro secolo ad entrare nella leggenda, per la sua semplicità, per la sua spontaneità, sempre pronto a donare quel suo sorriso aperto. La cosa che più sbalordisce e che anche essendo vissuto a contatto con forme abbiette del vizio queste non abbiano sporcato la sua anima candida, che ha resistito anche alle lusinghe del successo. Nel 1988 è stato reperito dal musicologo e ricercatore Tad Jones nella Sacred Heart Of Jesus Church di New Orleans, dove Louis è stato battezzato, un documento con il quale si è potuto appurare la vera data di nascita di Satchmo, il 4 agosto 1901. Il suo biografo ufficiale James Lincoln Collier ci riporta che in merito alla sua nascita anche i ricordi di Armstrong erano pieni di contraddizioni, egli malignamente ricorda che Louis dichiarava una data di nascita diversa per sfuggire al richiamo alla armi per la guerra in corso in Europa. Il soprannome con il quale era più conosciuto era “Satchmo”, letteralmente “Satchel Mouth” (bocca a borsa o a secchio) riferito alle grandi dimensione della sua bocca. Egli è stato il vero artefice della trasformazione del folclore di New Orleans in vera musica, la musica Jazz, e a darne legittimità. Le sue doti innate erano superiori qualitativamente al livello generale dei suoi contemporanei e queste doti gli hanno permesso di guidare l’evoluzione del collettivo di New Orleans in una struttura imperniata sul solista ed aggiungervi lo swing che ha trasformato il folclore iniziale in una musica colta e nuova, questo è stato possibile proprio per le sue grandi doti tecniche che gli hanno permesso di aggiungere alla melodia, all’armonia ed al ritmo della musica tradizionale lo “swing”, quel dondolio che accompagna la sua musica. La sua non corretta posizione delle labbra sul bocchino gli ha sempre causato difficoltà, ma si ipotizza anche che proprio questa errata imboccatura fosse alla base della sua personalissima sonorità. Egli amava seguire il tema in modo letterale ed era l’esecuzione in se stessa a dare valore alla sua musica. Legatissimo alla tradizione di New Orleans, che era alla base della sua ispirazione. Il suo modo di suonare era essenziale, era basato su un potente approccio seguito da frasi solide ed equilibrate, sulla qualità del vibrato e dalla sonorità tersa che producevano uno swing molto ricco. Il suo contributo al Jazz è stato immenso, considerato il più grande solista ed il personaggio più popolare del Jazz di ogni tempo, è stato punto di riferimento per molte generazioni di trombettisti e di cantanti. La sua splendida sonorità, la brillantezza, l’emotività era propria del cornettista delle bande di New Orleans che doveva emergere nelle parate stradali. Probabilmente Armstrong è stato anche uno dei più grandi cantanti della storia del Jazz. E’ stato quello che ha inventato lo “scat”, molto modestamente egli dichiara che questo nuovo modo di cantare lo ha scoperto solo per caso, durante una registrazione era caduto dal leggio lo spartito della canzone che stava interpretando e non ricordando le parole le sostituì con dei suoni. Egli ha usato questo modo di cantare come un naturale, coerente e musicale estensione del fraseggio della tromba, che lo liberava dalla schiavitù dei versi. Ha scritto pagine di canto meraviglioso, fantasioso, pieno di swing e di umorismo. Ricordiamo i meravigliosi duetti con Ella Fitzgerald. Il timbro caratteristico della sua voce aveva origine da una malattia alle corde vocali contratta da giovane ed in seguito aggravata dal vizio del fumo, oltre al fatto di non aver avuto nessuna preparazione o impostazione scolastica. Negli anni ha tentato anche con interventi chirurgici di eliminare quel suo timbro roco, tentativi che sono falliti per il nostro piacere, poiché avrebbe privato il suo canto della principale sua caratteristica. Il cantare oltretutto gli è servito anche da supporto al declino fisico come virtuoso di tromba, tale da prendere sempre più spazio in ogni disco o concerto. Tra le molteplici iniziative per ricordarlo, “Place Louis Armstrong” intestata a lui il 20 maggio 1998 a Parigi sul Boulevard de L’Hopital, luogo scelto per la vicinanza agli studi nei quali registrò per la Brunswig nell’ottobre 1934.

Cantante definita come la nuova Aretha Franklyn. Attirata inizialmente dal rhythm-and-blues e votata poi al gospel negli anni ‘80. Ha iniziato a lavorare con Dr.Mattie Moss Clarke, ed in seguito la sua carriera è stata equamente divisa tra il canto commerciale e quello religioso. Ha eseguito per molto tempo il tema della sigla di una nota trasmissione televisiva “Amen”. Potente ed inventiva nel melisma.

ARMSTRONG WALTER ZUBER (ST-CL/B)

Musicista cresciuto nella West Coast, anche se influenzato da Anthony Braxton e Eric Dolphy, non gli si può dare un’etichetta, perché si muove in vari campi musicali. Ha studiato musica classica al New York College of Music, alla Julliard School e al Royal Conservatory of Music di Toronto. Si è mantenuto agli studi anche insegnando musica moderna alla Wester University ed al Fairhaven College di Bellingham. Molto attratto dalla multistrumentalità egli ha scelto il clarinetto ed il flauto. Ha trascorso la maggior parte della sua carriera a Bellingham, città di confine, spesso si è spostato a Vancouver, dove la scena del jazz è molto vivace e quindi ha suonato con musicisti canadesi, con il pianista Paul Plimley, con il batterista Greg Simpson. Durante la sua carriera non ha girato molto, ha collaborato con Milo Belle e ha registrato ad Amsterdam con Steve lacy. Molto originale e pieno di risorse, dotato di buona personalità musicale che risente dell’influenza coltroniana. Dagli impasti musicali interessanti, profondamente radicati nella mentalità nera. Quando usa il clarino basso il suo modello è Eric Dolphy. Si è esibito al Walzer Art Center di Minneapolis. Il suo primo album da leader risale al 1973.

E’ figlia di una coppia di attori famosi, Lucille Ball e Dezi Arnaz. Cantante che vive ed è attiva in California. Voce dalla buona impostazione, piena di swing, che ha sempre ben figurato in ogni occasione. Cantante sponsorizzata da Rose Mary Clooney, che è stata la sua fonte di ispirazione. Nel 1979 a Broadway nel musical “They’re Playing Our Song”è stata premiata come migliore attrice, ha preso parte al film “Il cantante di Jazz”al fianco del famoso attore inglese Laurence Olivier. Nel 1996 e nel 1993 he stata premiata con l’Award. Negli ultimi anni si è dedicata maggiormente al teatro.
