ALLEN HENRY RED JR (TP) 

Algiers, Luisiana. 7/1/1908. – New York 17/4/1967.

Figlio d’arte, ha come maestro il violinista Peter Bocage che gli ha insegnato soprattutto a leggere la musica. Ha debuttato con la Excelsior Band nel 1924, suonando poi con Sam Morgan, George Lewis, John Handy e dirigendo un’orchestrina insieme a John Casimir. Nel 1926 ha suonato con Fate Marable e Sidney Desvignes sui battelli che percorrevano il Mississipi. Nel 1927 si è trasferito a Chicago ed ha fatto parte del gruppo di King Oliver, suonando poi con Louis Russell a New York dal 1929 al 1933. Ha lavorato con Fletcher Henderson, Charlie Johnson, ha fatto parte della Mills Blue Rhythm Band nel 1936. Dopo un breve periodo trascorso nell’orchestra di Duke Ellington, è passato con Eddie Condon. Poi è entrato a far parte dell’orchestra di Louis Armstrong nella quale è rimasto dal 1937 al 1940, partecipando anche a varie sedute di registrazione. Nell’ottobre del 1940 ha avuto occasione di suonare con Benny Goodman, quindi con Teddy Wilson e Lionel Hampton. Nel 1942 ha messo su un suo sestetto con il quale ha girato molte città e con il quale si è esibito sino alla fine della carriera che è coincisa purtroppo con la sua morte. Ha inciso, nel corso della sua carriera, anche con Billy Banks, Don Redman, Lucky Millinder, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Fats Waller, Benny Morton. Musicista in possesso di molta fantasia, dalla notevole tecnica, dal suono dolce e sottile. Era anche un piacevole cantante.

Cantante attiva nell’area di Chicago. Cresciuta a Madison nel Milwaukee, in una famiglia nella quale c’erano diversi musicisti. Ha iniziato a suonare il corno francese, dimostrando delle buone doti di cantante. Ha frequentato l’Università del Wisconsin, dove ha studiato musica e canto jazz, tra i suoi insegnanti anche il bassista Richard Davis. Dal 1987 si è esibita al Wyndham Hotel di Milwaukee, accompagnata dall’organista Melvin Rhyne. Nel 1990 si è trasferita a Chicago, cantando nei migliori locali e registrando diversi ottimi album. Cantante buona interprete di ballad e blues, in possesso di uno swing essenziale e confidenziale. E’ stata indicata da Mark Murphy come l’erede di Anita O’Day.

Dopo aver studiato il violino si è dedicato al basso tuba, lavorando con Hod Carrier Paul Bank nel 1927, insieme al clarinettista Artie Starks ed al chitarrista Bob Tinsley. Ha messo su la sua Cotton Club Orchestra. Nel 1932 ha accompagnato anche la famosa cantante Victoria Spivey. Musicista noto perchè ha diretto negli anni ’20 nel South West un’orchestra che riscuoteva parecchio successo.

Musista che va ad infoltire la schiera dei giovani talenti di Detroit. Nel 1993 si trasferisce a New York dove diventa ben presto uno dei sax tenori emergenti dell’ultima generazione. Già può vantare della importanti collaborazioni come quelle con Betty Carter (che un po’ lo ha scoperto) Lester Bowie, George Cables, Butch Morris, Frank Foster, Cindy Blackman, Wallace Roney, Wynard Harper, Fabio Morgera. Musicista dalla ricca inventiva e dalla grande vitalità. Sax tenore dalla voce potente, energica, corposa, senza manierismi. Gradisce le lunghe improvvisazioni che ricordano l’ultimo Coltrane, in esse colpiscono le soluzioni molto originali che ha volte debordano nel free.

Pittsburg, Kansas, 2/7/1926. – Hawthorne, California. 18/10/1944.

Aveva appena un anno quando, alla perdita del padre, la famiglia si è trasferita a Denver e qui egli ha imparato a suonare il sax tenore. Nel 1943 gli viene offerta una borsa di studio per la musica e per l’attletica alla Francis Xavier University di New Orleans. Qui dimostra capacità sia sul campo di atletica che in locali famosi come il Dew Drop Inn. Nel 1947 esordisce professionalmente con il pianista e cantante Paul Gayten, poi accompagna la cantante Annie Lourie al Robin Hood Club di Jackson Avenue e debutta anche in sala di registrazione. Nel 1950 fa parte della Dave Bartholomew’s Band, accompagna il cantante Fats Domino. Nel 1957 ha successo in una lunga tournée con una banda di rhythm-and-blues. Tornato a New Orleans tra il 1961 ed il 1965 va in tournée con l’orchestra di Fats Domino. Nel 1965 trova un buon lavoro in una industria aeronautica e occasionalmente suona con un trio. Tornerà spesso con Domino e sul finire della carriera suona in gruppi di rock, effettua una tournée con i Rolling Stones nel 1981.

ALLEN MARSHALL (ST)

Louisville, Kentucky. 25/5/1924.

Inizia la carriera suonando nella banda militare in Europa ed in seguito esordisce professionalmente a Parigi con Art Simmons nel 1940. Suona poi con James Moody in giro per l’Europa e studia al Conservatorio di Parigi. Tornato negli Stati Uniti, a Chicago, entra a far parte della sezione dei sassofoni della Sun Ra Cosmic Arkestra e ne farà sempre parte salvo sporadiche occasioni. Suona anche con Olatunji, con Bill Dixon, con Paul Bley. Buon solista di diversi tipi di ance, si è dedicato anche a strumenti a percussione africani o fabbricati da lui stesso. Sassofonista a volte lirico, a volte intenso ottimo interprete del pensiero di Sun Ra.

Bassista, suonatore di tuba e cantante. Studia al Moyen College di Menphis e debutta con l’orchestra di Jimmy Crawford, della quale diventerà ben presto uno dei pilastri e con il quale ha suonato dal 1928 al 1942 quasi ininterrottamente. In uno di questi intervalli ha suonato con Jimmy Lunceford. Lasciato Lunceford nel 1942 lascia anche l’attività, tornandovi solo sporadicamente. E’ stato il primo bassista a tentare di amplificare il basso ed ha alternato spesso la tuba al basso. Nel 1930 ha avuto nella sua orchestra Ben Webster.

Pianista precoce, a dieci anni già lavorava nei cinema dove accompagnava i film muti. Ha suonato con Dave Nelson, con il quale ha registrato nel 1931. E’ poi andato con l’orchestra di James P.Johnson e, dal 1932 al 1937 con Teddy Hill. In Europa è stato in tournée con Dickie Wells nel 1937 e con lui ha registrato a Parigi. Al rientro negli States, ha registrato a New York con Slim Gaillard e Slam Stewart, poi con il gruppo di Stuff Smith, e lavorato come solista a Washington. Trasferitosi in California, si è esibito con un suo trio ed ha accompagnato Billie Heywood.

ALLEN SHORTY (P).

Pianista e vibrafonista attivo sulla scena del jazz negli anni ’40. Verso gli anni ’50 ha iniziato a comporre delle canzoni commerciali, associato al produttore Joe Davis ed ha lanciato un cantante che avuto grande successo nella canzone frivola, Leslie Uggans. Ha lavorato nel grande jazz, con Ella Fitzgerald ed ha collaborato con un giovane Kay Winding, con Stan Getz ed altri.

ALLEN STEVE PATRICK WILLIAMS (P-VC)

New York, 26/12/1921. – Encino, California. 30/10/2000.

Bravo pianista autodidatta, ma anche cantante, compositore, presentatore e produttore di spettacoli televisivi, ha anche collaborato alla lavorazione del film “Benny Goodman Story”. I genitori lavoravano in una compagnia di vaudeville e lui naturalmente li seguiva. Ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte giovanissimo, ricevendo una cultura musicale molto approssimativa, suonando la tuba per tre anni e seguendo lezioni di piano all’età di dieci anni. Ha frequentato per due anni la Drake University e l’Arizona State Teachers College, prima di assolvere agli obblighi di leva militare. Ha iniziato la sua carriera alla radio nella metà degli anni ’40 e alla televisione nella metà degli anni ’50. Ha condotto dal 1951 al 1954, per una stazione di New York, la sua trasmissione “The Tonight Shaw”, continuando a fare il presentatore sino al 1957. Nel contempo suonava il piano e cantava le sue canzoni, apparendo regolarmente nel gruppo di Terry Gibbs. Ha condotto uno degli spettacoli televisivi più celebri degli Stati Uniti il “Steve Allen Show”, nel quale ha ospitato moltissimi celebri jazzmen. Negli anni ’50 ha registrato con Charlie Shawers, Urbie Green, Mundell Lowe, Gus Bidona, Milt Hinton, Gary Peacock e naturalmente con Gibbs. Ha composto moltissime canzoni (circa 5000) oltre a diverse colonne musicali per film. E’ più conosciuto negli States come attore di cinema e televisione, interpretando il ruolo di Benny Goodman nel film sulla sua vita. E’ stato l’inventore dei talkshow notturni in televisione ed ha scritto numerosi libri.

Critico e storico di jazz, coinvolto da questa musica per tutta la sua vita. Ha scritto la più completa biografia di King Oliver ed anche quella di Fletcher Henderson. La prima biografia quella di King Oliver , pubblicata nel 1956 titolata “King Joe Oliver”, venne compilata con la collaborazione di Brian Rust. Il secondo titolato “Hendersonia” è stato pubblicato nel 1973. Scrittore dalla profonda cultura, ha trattato gli argomenti con accuratezza.

ALLEN WOODY (CL).

New York. 1/12/1935.

Grande attore e regista americano, con l’hobby del clarinetto. Abbiamo gustato in passato le sue colonne sonore sempre piene di jazz. Da diverso tempo frequenta regolarmente, quando gli impegni cinematografici lo consentono, club di New York nei quali si fa musica, in particolare il Michael’s Pub nella 55a Strada di New York, partecipando alle jam sessions insieme ad amici. Tra le sue amicizie musicali quella con Eddy Davis, che lo ha indotto a costituire la “Woody Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band”, con la quale ha riscosso buon successo anche in Europa. La sua musica è dixieland essenziale e la suona con gusto senza avere velleità di professionismo. Dimostra un buon gusto come solista anche se pensiamo abbia una voce strumentale un po’ legnosa.

ALLEY VERNON (B).

Winnemucca, Nevada. 26/5/1915. – San Francisco, 3/10/2004.

Cresciuto a San Francisco, studia clarinetto a scuola ed il contrabbasso al Sacramento Junior College. Ha iniziato a suonare con Lionel Hampton nel 1940 sino al 1942. E’ prima entrato a fare parte della grande orchestra di Count Basie, poi ha accompagnato Fats Walzer allo Sweet’s Ballroom di Oakland, in California. Dal 1942 al 1947 è stato in marina. Ritornato a San Francisco ha diretto un suo piccolo gruppo lavorando per la radio e la televisione. Ha ricoperto la carica di direttore artistico al celebre Blackhawk negli anni ’50, dove ha avuto modo di accompagnare Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Jack Sheedy, Nick Esposito, Flip Phillips, Charlie Mariano. In seguito si è trasferito a Los Angeles dove ha organizzato una sua orchestra, con la quale ha lavorato anche in show televisivi a San Francisco. Ha registrato con Ralph Sutton, con Jimmy Witherspoon, suonato a Squaw Valley, in California, per i giochi Olimpici del 1960. Ha partecipato ad una famosa serata dedicata a Fats Walzer, alla Davies Hall di San Francisco nel luglio 1988, ed è restato in attività nell’aria californiana sin dagli anni ’90. Figura di spicco nella lotta contro il segregazionismo razziale.

Ha suonato con i Gregoriens dal 1930 al 1935, con Fred Adison, Alix Combelle. Agli inizi degli anni ’40 ha messo su con poca fortuna un suo gruppo, nel 1941 è andato in tournée con Ray Ventura sino al 1944. Ha inciso con Django Reinhardt e Hubert Rostaing. E’ stato uno dei primi musicisti jazz francesi. Tromba sul modello di Armstrong, che però con gli anni si è avvicinata più al moderno.

ALLIGATOR.

Termine usato dai neri di New Orleans negli anni venti per indicare i musicisti bianchi. “Li chiamavamo alligatori perché venivano ad ingoiare tutto quello che potevano imparare da noi” frase di Louis Armstrong riportata nel libro “Hear Me Talkin’To Ya” di Nat Shapiro e Nat Hentoff. Nella seconda metà degli anni trenta questo termine è stato usato dai musicisti, specialmente quelli bianchi, per indicare i ballerini ed i fans che seguivano le orchestra swing, specie quella di Benny Goodman, che ha utilizzato questo slang sino agli ultimi anni di attività. E’ stata anche coniata la frase idiota utilizzata come commiato: “See You Later Alligator” (ci vediamo dopo alligatore) al quale si rispondeva “After A While Crocodile” (A fra poco coccodrillo). Negli anni ’50 queste frasi sono state riprese dai cantanti di rock’n’roll.

Ha iniziato a suonare la chitarra intorno agli anni ’70 e dopo aver assistito a Torino ad un concerto di Ornette Coleman si è avvicinato al Jazz. Ha iniziato a collaborare con Flavio Boltro, Emanuele Cisi ed altri. Ha frequentato dei workshop diretti da grandi chitarristi, ha seguito dei corsi di armonia e nel 1985 è entrato nel gruppo Area II di Giulio Capiozzo. Nel 1986 ha insegnato improvvisazione alla Scuola di Musica Moderna a Trieste, nel 1991 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Paolo Conte, con il quale ha partecipato al Festival Jazz di Montreux ed al Blue Note di New York. Nel 1988 ha registrato con la cantante Mirian Makeba. Ha collaborato con Franco D’andrea, Jimmy Owens, Tommy Campbell, Ray Drummond, John Hicks, Idrees Mohammed, Larry Nocella, Lou Blackbourne ed altri. Ha iniziato i suoi studi musicali nella sua città alla Yale University, per completarli a New York, dove si è trasferito e dove ha avviato la carriera di professionista. Tra i primi gruppi nel quale si è messo in luce, quello di Lee Konitz. Nel 1982 è stato tra i fondatori nonché direttore artistico del “Jazz Composers Collective”, associazione sulle orme dell’AACM di Chicago e del B.A.G. di Saint Louis; cooperativa non a scopo di lucro, finalizzata ad aiutare e sostenere i musicisti. Ha fatto parte dell’Herbie Nichols Project, del quale è stato coleader insieme al pianista Frank Kimbrough, il Ben Allison & Medicine Wheel, il quintetto Peace Pipe. Compositore e solista molto eclettico.

Anche se musicista professionista già all’età di 15 anni, ha registrato il suo primo album da leader solo all’età di 45 anni. Già al liceo si interessava di jazz, avendo imparato a suonare il sax alto da autodidatta. Dopo aver frequentato la Northwestern University e l’Università di Miami, si è stabilito in Florida, lavorando nei club sino alla metà degli anni ’70, insieme al pianista Eddie Higgins, e facendo parte dell’orchestra di Gene Krupa. Molto stimato e conosciuto nel territorio, musicista molto versatile ha anche collaborato con gruppi funk, dixieland e bop.

Riconosciuto come un buon cantante di rhythm-and-blues, è arrivato alla notorietà dopo aver registrato un classico di questo genere “You Can’t Make It If You Tray”. Dopo sette anni da questo successo si è trasferito con la famiglia a Nashville ed insieme al fratello, cantante evangelico, ha fatto parte del coro della chiesa mentre frequentava le scuole superiori. Componente di un famoso quartetto vocale i “Fairfield”, venne notato dal produttore Ted Jarrett, che lo convinse ad intraprendere la carriera professionale. Con i guadagni dei primi successi, si aprì un suo ristorante.

Bluesmen dalle chiari origini gospel, avendo iniziato la carriera proprio con il gruppo gospel dei Southern Travellers. Voce che univa perfettamente la religiosità del gospel, al ritmo del moderno blues.
