WILLIAMS BUSTER (B)
Camden, New Jersey. 17/4/1942.
Il suo primo maestro è stato il padre, un bassista professionista, ed i dischi di Oscar Pettiford. Ha studiato teoria, armonia e composizione al Combs College of Music di Philadelphia. Dopo aver lavorato nell’area di Camden nel New Jersey, è andato a Philadelphia con Jimmy Heath e nel 1960 ha fatto un tour con il gruppo di Gene Ammons e suonando con Sonny Stitt sino al 1961. Ha accompagnato Dakota Stanton, poi Betty Carter dal 1962 al 1963, Sarah Vaughan e Nancy Wilson dal 1964 al 1968 e con la quale è andato a Los Angeles dove è entrato a far parte dei Jazz Crusaders. Nel 1967 ha suonato con Miles Davis, poi con Prince Lasha, con Bobby Hutcherson e Harold Land. Nel 1968 si è stabilito a New York dove ha lavorato con Herbie Mann, con i Jazz Messenggers dal 1969 al 1970, con Herbie Hancock dal 1969 al 1972, con Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Johnny Richmond, con McCoy Tyner con Mary Lou Williams. Nel 1977 ha registrato vari album con Ron Carter, ha suonato poi con Woody Shaw, Billy Hart, Lee Morgan, Sonny Rollins, Kenny Burrell, Freddie Hubbard, Hamiet Bluiett, Joe Farrell. Ha diretto importanti sezioni di registrazioni dal 1976 al 1989 che hanno avuto un grande rilievo nella sua carriera, avendo degli ottimi sideman. Ha guidato un quintetto, il “Something More”, ha fatto parte del gruppo Sphere, ha collaborato con Gary Bartz, Ha fatto parte ed insegnato al Jazz and Comtemporary Music Program alla New School University. Insieme a Cecil McBee, sono gli eredi della musica di Coltrane, nell’ambito del loro strumento.

Suo padre Dennis musicista, sua madre Eva Taylor e sua sorella Irene cantanti. Nel 1906 si sono trasferiti a New Orleans, ha lavorato come cantante in spettacoli di minstrels ed ha iniziato a suonare ed a comporre. Nel 1915 si è esibito in duo con Armand J.Piron, con il quale ha fondato anche una casa editrice e lavorano nel circuito dei teatri di varietà insieme anche a W.C.Handy. Si trasferisce a Chicago nel 1919 dove ha aperto un negozio musicale. Pubblica diverse sue composizioni e quelle di molti musicisti che in seguito sono diventati celebri come Armstrong e Fats Waller. Nel 1921 è arrivato a New York dove ha inciso come cantante ed è diventato il direttore artistico della Okeh. Con questa etichetta ha messo su molti gruppi di studio: i “Blue Five” , i “Jazz Kings”, gli “Harmonisers”, i “Washboard Four”, la “Jug Band” ed altri, che hanno registrato copiosamente. Egli ha suonato spesso il pianoforte collaborato dal banconista Narcisse Buddy Christian e con Floyd Casey al washboard, suoi partner preferiti, con il quali ha anche accompagnato in sala di incisione molte cantanti tra le quali: Sippie Wallace, Margaret Johnson, Bessie Smith ed altre. Ha inciso con Sidney Bechet, Coleman Hawkins, Buster Bailey, King Oliver, Eddie Lang, Tommy Ladnier, scrivendo anche gli arrangiamenti. E’ stato uno dei pionieri del piano jazz. Compositore ed arrangiatore di notevole importanza. Ha avuto il torto di circondarsi sempre di musicisti dalla statura solistica notevole che hanno oscurato il suo talento solistico. Ha continuato sino alla morte a fare l’editore di musica.

Ha iniziato a suonare negli alberghi ed in spettacoli radiofonici e ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Oscar Pettiford. Nel 1928 ha suonato con Terrence Hoder, che dirige una importante territorial band e vi è rimasto quando è diventata la “Cloud of Joy”di Andy Kirk. Dopo un breve periodo trascorso con Alphonso Trent ha suonato a Chicago con Nat”King”Cole, poi con il fratello di Nat il bassista Eddie Cole. Dal 1936 al 1937 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Count Basie al posta di Freddie Green. Ha suonato con Roy Milton, con Eddie”Cleanhead”Vinson, poi con Jay McShann. Negli anni ’90 ha lavorato soprattutto a Kansas City e nel 1994 negli “Statesmen”a New York. E’ stato in Europa in tour con Red Richards e Norris Turney, ha accompagnato Etta Jones al Charlie Parker Jazz Festival al Tompkins Square Park di New York nel 1998. Musicista di buon livello che dimostra ancora di possedere un buon senso dello swing ed un blues feeling commovente. Violinista in debito a Joe Venuti.

Il vero debutto lo ha fatto in Florida nel 1925 negli Eagle Eye Shields e poi è passato con gli Alonzo Ross Deluxe Syncopators. Nel 1928 è andato a New York dove ha registrato per la prima volta con James P.Johnson, è stato per breve tempo con Chick Webb al Savoy Ballroom, con Fletcher Henderson e nel 1929 è entrato nella orchestra di Duke Ellington per restarvi sino al 1940. Dell’orchestra del Duca egli è stato una delle voci caratteristiche che hanno creato il sound ellingtoniano ed una delle star dell’orchestra. Ha inciso con Billie Holiday e Teddy Wilson, ha fatto anche parte dell’orchestra e dei piccoli gruppi di Benny Goodman, dove insieme a Charlie Christian ha contribuito al loro successo. Nel 1944 ha messo su una sua orchestra che però non ha avuto il successo sperato, anche se comprendeva diversi musicisti di valore. Nel 1955 ha messo su un gruppo che suonava rhythm and blues, ma anche questa volta il successo non è arrivato. Due anni dopo ha organizzato un interessante gruppo con Rex Stewart e nel 1962 è rientrato nell’orchestra di Ellington, dando ancora il suo notevole contributo a diverse ottime registrazioni. Proprio con Duke è stato interprete di una composizione scritta proprio per lui da Ellington il famoso “Concerto for Cootie” registrato nel 1940. Ha inciso anche in compagnia di Coleman Hawkins, Johnny Hodges e Leonard Feather. Negli ultimi anni problemi di salute ne hanno un po appannato lo smalto. E’ stato una delle voci più efficaci di Ellington, per il modo come riusciva ha rappresentare la sua musica,essendo in possesso di grandi doti tecniche e di una brillante maniera interpretativa. Maestro ineguagliato delle sordine, ne ha ampliato la tecnica, sviluppando la gamma degli effetti, dei timbri e delle possibilità di intensità passando dai toni delicati a quelli aggressivi.

La madre organista presso la Free Will Baptist Church, gli ha dato lezioni di pianoforte a cinque anni. Ha iniziato a esibisrsi in feste private e dopo aver servito nell’esercito durante la seconda guerra mondiale ha studiato musica alla Gi Bill e ha iniziato a lavorare nei club di New Orleans. Solo nel 1974 ha raggiunto la notorietà ed il successo.

Della sua carriera artistica si conosce solo dopo che è arrivato a Memphis ed ha registrato per la Victor nel 1928 ed in seguito ha lavorato in questa area. Nel 1935 ha lasciato Memphis e nel 1937 si è stabilito a St.Louis dove ha organizzato un’altra territory band ed ha collaborato con il chitarrista e cantante J.D.Short.

Debutta con i “Savoy Ramblers”di Napoleon Zias, ha suona poi con Claude Hopkins nel 1931. Ha diretto una sua orchestra al “Savoy Ballroom”di New York. Nel 1937 ha lavorato con Lucky Millinder, nel 1939 con Don Redman, nel 1940 ha inciso con Jelly Roll Morton. Nel 1941 ha accompagnato Ella Fitzgerald, nel 1942 è con Red Allen e con Chris Columbus. Nel 1943 ha fatto parte dei “De Paris Brothers”, di nuovo con Redman, poi nel trio di Cliff Jackson, con James P. Johnson e con Gravin Bushell. Finita la guerra dal 1946 al 1948 ha lavorato con Emmett Hobson e nel 1955 ha messo su insieme a Porter Kilbert un’orchestra. Negli anni ’60 ha suonato con Happy Caldwell.

Ha registrato con Johnny Griffin nel 1960 ed il suo ultimo impegno con Bill Russo al Jazz Showcase. Spesso amava esibirsi come cantante, avendo anche un certo successo.

Dal 1926 al 1928 ha suonato con Horace Henderson e dal 1928 sino al 1935 con Chick Webb, salvo una breve parentesi nel 1931 quando ha suonato nei McKinney’s Cotton Pickers e nel 1932 con Lucky Millinder. Dal 1935 al 1940 ha suonato con Fletcher Henderson, con Louis Armstrong e con Ella Fitzgerald nel 1941. Nel 1944 ha risuonato con Lucky Millinder e poi ancora con Hopkins. Nel 1950 ha fatto una tournée con Herbert Kat Cowens. Ha fatto anche parte dell’orchestra di Freddie Miller.
WILLIAMS FESS, STANLEY R. (CL)
Danville, Kentucky. 10/4/1894. – New York. 17/12/1975.
Ha iniziato a suonare il violino ed al 1909 si è legato al clarinetto. Nel 1914 si è trasferito a Cincinnati dove ha diretto un’orchestra dal 1919 al 1923. Nel 1924 è andato a New York dove ha diretto la sua Royal Flush Orchestra con la quale ha lavorato fisso dal 1926 al 1928 al Savot Ballroom. Come solista e con la sua orchestra ha espresso un blues intenso e le sue registrazioni sono i migliori esempi dello stile di Harlem della fine degli anni ’20. Nel 1928 ha sostituito Dave Payton alla direzione di una orchestra a Chicago. Nel 1929 è tornato a New York ed ha continuato con successo a dirigere la propria orchestra sino agli anni ’30 ed in seguito dei piccoli gruppi. Ha registrato per varie case discografiche e nel 1960 è stato direttore musicale dei “The Goldemain” un gruppo vocale.

WILLIAMS FRANC, FRANCIS (TP)
McConnell’s Mill, Pennsylvania. 20/9/1910. – Houston, Pennsylvania. 2/10/1983.
Nel 1930 ha debuttato con Marion Sears a Cleveland, poi con i “Chicago Nightingales” di Frank Terry a Chicago. Lasciato Terry si è stabilito a New York dove ha fatto parte dell’orchestra diretta in uno spettacolo da Fats Waller. Ha fatto parte anche delle orchestre di Earl Hines, Claude Hopkins, Edgar Haynes, Horace Henderson, dal 1941 al 1942 con Ella Fitzgerald, Sabby Lewis e con Machito nel 1944. Nel 1945 è entrato nell’orchestra di Duke Ellington ed è rimasto con lui sino al 1949 e vi ritorna per breve tempo nel 1951. Nel 1959 ha suonato con Earl Coleman sino al 1962. Dopo un periodo trascorso nelle orchestre dei teatri di Broadway ed in orchestre di musica latina è ritornato alle grandi orchestre di jazz. Ha suonato con Clyde Bernhardt, ha diretto un suo quartetto a New York, nel 1972 ha fatto parte degli “Harlem Blues and Jazz Band”, nel 1978 con i “Savoy Sultan” di Panama Francis e nel 1980 con Jimmy Witherspoon.
WILLIAMS GENE (VC)
Cantante che ha svolto nella maggior parte della sua carriera l’attività nei club in un repertorio commerciale Tra gli anni ’40 e ’50 ha inciso una serie di dischi di interesse jazzistico. In questo compito lo hanno accompagnato diversi buoni solisti di jazz, tra i quali: Taft Jordan, Kai Winding, Urbie Green, Sam Donahue, Nat Pierce, Barry Galbraith, Mit Hinton, Osie Johnson.

Soprattutto arrangiatore, in tale ruolo ha lavorato per Sonny Durham e tra il 1941 ed il 1942 per Glenn Miller. Dal 1946 al 1949 ha scritto per Gene Krupa, poi nel 1951 per Ray Anthony. Ha anche collaborato con Harry James, con Vaughan Monroe e con Charlie Ventura. Ha anche diretto per un certo periodo una sua orchestra con poca fortuna.

WILLIAMS J.MAJO, MAYO JAY.

Dopo aver studiato alla Brown University ed aver fatto per un certo periodo il giocatore professionista di football nel 1924 ha iniziato a fare il talent scout per la Paramount a Chicago e ha guidato la pubblicità della Chicago Music. Nel marzo del 1927 ha lasciato la Paramount per fondare sempre la Chicago Record Company. Ha lavorato per le serie rare della Vovalion e la Brunswick, ha guidato per esse le pubbliche relazioni e nel 1934 ha lavorato per la Decca ed è stato uno degli afro-americani più importanti, con posizioni di responsabilità nel campo discografico nel periodo della seconda guerra mondiale ed ha avuto un ruolo molto importante per gli artisti di jazz e di blues di questo periodo. Ha collaborato anche con molte altre etichette sino all’inizio degli anni ’70 quando ha lasciato l’attività.
WILLIAMS JACKIE, ARTHUR (DR)

Ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte ed in seguito ha studiato la batteria dal 1949 al 1951. Ha debuttato con i “Saints and Sinners” di Red Richards e Vic Dickenson, è tornato con loro nel 1963 e nel 1966 ed ha registrato a Londra nell’ottobre del 1965. Nella metà degli anni ’50 con Buck Clayton con il quale ha registrato nel 1963. Ha guidato un suo gruppo e ha lavorato con Edmond Hall, Buster Bailey, Earl Hines, Joe Muranyi, Teddy Wilson, Roy Eldridge, Eddie Condon, Illinois Jacquet, Clark Terry, la cantante Odetta, agli inizi delgi anni ’70 con Buddy Tate, con Bobby Hackett. Nel 1973 ha registrato con Big Chieff Moore, con Billy Butler, con Erroll Garner. Nel marzo del 1975 ha suonato a Parigi in un quartetto composto da Johnny Guarnieri, Jimmy Shirley e Slam Stewart. In diverse sedute di registrazione ha accompagnato Stephane Grappelli, Pat Flowers, Cliff Smalls, Alberta Hunter, Zoot Sims. Ha partecipato alla Grande Parade du Jazz di Nizza con Vic Dickenson e Eddie ”Lockjaw” Davis, ha lavorato con Jay McShann. All’inizio del 1985 ha partecipato alla fondazione di un quintetto con Howard Alden e Dan Barrett, ha suonato con Milt Hinton, Ralph Sutton, Harold Ashby, Billy Mitchell e Keith Ingham. Con Ruby Braff ha partecipato al JVC Jazz Festival di New York del 1988, ha registrato con il pianista Jesse Green nel 1993 e con il trio di Junior Mance. Negli anni ’90 ha registrato con Alain Bouchet, Benny Waters, Bob Barnard ed il cantante di night club Bobby Short.
