ABRAMS RICHARD MUHAL (P-CL)

Chicago, Illinois. 19/9/1930 – 29/10/2017.

Ha compiuto gli studi presso il Musical College di Chicago, restando per molti anni nella sua città natale. Qui ha lavorato tra gli altri con un gruppo hard bop il “Modern Jazz Two+3”. E’ stato il partner preferito per quasi tutti i musicisti che arrivavano a Chicago, come: Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Gene Ammons, Zoot Sims, Roland Kirk, Johnny Griffin, Dexter Gordon. Ha costituito un suo gruppo “Experimental Band” e, questa sua iniziativa, ha determinato il nascere nel 1965 della “Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians” (AACM) in cui confluirono i migliori musicisti di Chicago. Ha suonato con l’Art Ensemble of Chicago, con Joseph Jarman, Anthony Braxton. Il suo è stato sempre un jazz sperimentale. Egli ha portato nel free tutta l’eredità della tradizione. Ha senz’altro influenzato musicalmente tutti i musicisti dell’AACM e non solo quelli.

ABRAMS RAY RAYMOND ABRANSON (ST)

New York 23/1/1920.

Fratello del batterista Lee Abrams con il quale ha condiviso le fortune musicali nel primo dopoguerra nei locali della 52a strada di New York. Ha imparato a suonare il violino, ed il clarinetto dal padre, ma la dello strumento definitivo su cui applicarsi la farà nel 1940 quando ha fondato un gruppo con il fratello ed ha iniziato a suonare stabilmente il sax tenore. Al Clarke Monroe’s Uptown House ha avuto l’opportunità di suonare nelle jam session accanto a Charlie Parker ed altri boppers, nel 1946 entra nell’orchestra di Dizzy Gillespie, e nel 1947 è giunto con Don Redman in Europa. Ha diretto un suo gruppo al Savoy, ha suonato con Andy Kirk nel 1947, con Hot Lips Page nel 1950 e con Bill Harris nel 1952. Sassofonista del periodo di transizione, in bilico tra Hawkins e Young, ha avuto una carriera mediocre.

ABRIANI JOHN GIOVANNI. (DIR)

San Girolamo di Louisiana, Vicenza, 15/5/1898. – Milano, Italia. agosto, 1960.

Direttore di orchestra, sassofonista e violinista. Ha iniziato la carriera in Svizzera dove ha messo su un’orchestra insieme al fratello Felice, solista di banjo e violino, con la quale si è esibito nei locali pubblici. Tra il 1925 ed il 1932 ha girato l’Italia, la Germania e nel 1932 ha ottenuto un ingaggio a Calcutta in India. Spesso è venuto in Italia, dove è considerato come un antesignano del jazz italico.

Casa discografica nata in seno alla British Decca nel 1961. Diventata famosa per la pubblicazione del jazz originario, della musica popolare e dello swing. Ha attinto soprattutto al catalogo della Decca Americana, la Brunswick, la Vocalion e la Commodore. Del jazz arcaico ha pubblicato 150 album. In seno ad essa è nata l’Ace of Clubs, etichetta associata che ha pubblicato importanti dischi registrati da grandi jazzman residenti in Europa.

Dopo diverse esperienze musicali e strumentali (tromba con Sammy Price, il sax tenore con Don Bagley) ha deciso di optare per il pianoforte, abbandonando gli altri strumenti. Nel 1945 ha lavorato al Minton’s Playhouse nel quale ha modo di suonare nel 1947 con Eddie Lookjaw Davis. Ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Dizzy Gillespie nel 1950, ha accompagnato Dinah Washington e poi ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Illinois Jacquet con il quale è venuto in tournée in Europa nel 1953. Pianista apprezzato soprattutto per il suo tocco delicato.

“Gli Assi” gruppo composto da Fred Bellow e dai fratelli Louis e Dave Myers, sono stati da molti anni tra i più abili gruppi sidemen dei cantanti di blues di Chicago. Già nella metà degli anni ’50 accompagnavano Junior Wells e Little Walker. Del gruppo, il musicista più in evidenza è il batterista Freddie Bellow, cresciuto con il jazz, balzato alla ribalta nell’ambiente musicale di Chicago più che come solista, come sostenitore in vari dibattiti del ruolo che la batteria deve occupare ed della sua importante presenza.

Ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte a nove anni ed in seguito diversi strumenti ad ancia. Si è impegnato nello studio della musica ed ha conseguito il diploma. Musicista attivo nel jazz post-bop, buon compositore ed ottimo strumentista. Sassofonista molto disinvolto, carezzando le melodie e spaziando esternando le sue emozioni, con eccellente dinamismo. Al sax tenore molto influenzato da Sonny Rollins. E’ anche noto per la sua collezione di strumenti e per il suo laboratorio per riparare qualsiasi strumento musicale.

Uno dei più importanti organizzatori di manifestazioni e Festival europei. Ha organizzato le rassegne di Pori, di Molde, di Copenaghen, di Stoccarda, di Vienna, il “Jazz Mecca”di Maastricht, quello di Glasgow, di Vitoria in Spagna e Vienne in Francia. In Italia ha collaborato alla organizzazione delle prime edizioni di Umbria Jazz. Il suo fiore all’occhiello è il “North Sea Jazz Festival” dell’Aja, organizzato da Acket per la prima volta nel 1976.

Trasferitosi a Milano nel 1952 ha partecipato alla fondazione della “Milan College Jazz Society”. Per un certo periodo ha fatto parte della “Riverside Jazz Band” ed in seguito ha collaborato spesso nei gruppi di Lino Patruno.

ACOUSTIC SWING TRIO.

Gruppo ideato ed organizzato da Michele Ariodante e Mauro Carpi per rendere omaggio al grande Stephane Grappelli e contestualmente a Django Reinhardt. Musicisti balzati alla ribalta nel gruppo di Lino Patruno. Il loro intento è quello di ricreare la magica atmosfera dei loro idoli, ed in buona parte ci riescono, con la loro carica di swing.

Trasferitosi in Puglia, a Trani si è diplomati presso i Conservatori di Foggia e di Bari nel 1996. Nello stesso anno ha prodotto il suo primo disco insieme a musicisti locali il sassofonista Michele Carrabba, Pierluigi Calducci al basso e Michele Vurchio alla batteria. Ha continuato a collaborare con musicisti locali. Ha lavorato anche nella musica commerciale accompagnando il cantante Fausto Leali.

ACROSS THE TRACK BLUES.

Nello slang degli anni ’40 tale frase indicava i quartieri specie nelle piccole città americane abitate da bianchi poveri o i ghetti neri che, normalmente, erano situati al di là delle rotaie del treno, che creavano una specie di barriera fra questi quartieri e quelli residenziali abitati dai bianchi. Il 28 ottobre del 1940 Duke Ellington ha composto ed inciso un brano con questo titolo per la Victor.
