A tredici anni ha studiato il pianoforte e ha suonato la fisarmonica per le strade di Bronzeville nel South Side. Ha debuttato nel 1953 con Paul Williams, poi ha accompagnato Charlie Parker. Ha collaborato con Von Freeman, Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, Wilbur Ware, Miles Davis, Roy Eldridge, Serge Chaloff, Israel Crosby, Howard McGhee, Pat Patrick, Richard Abrams, Malachi Flavors e con Dave Shipp nel 1954. Nel 1955 ha registrato il suo primo disco “Son in love with the sound of A.H.”. Nel 1961 ha accompagnato Dinah Washington, poi Johnny Hartman, Al Hibbler, con Roland Kirk nel 1962, Walt Dickerson, Jackie McLean, Kenny Dorhan, con Jimmy Woods nel 1963, Joe Henderson. E’ stato sotto contratto con la Blue Note dal 1963 al 1969 ed ha inciso con Hank Mobley, Bobby Hutcherson, Sam Rivers, Roy Haynes, Richard Davis, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Eric Dolphy, Joe Chambers, John Gimore, Cecil McBee, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Lee Morgan, Booker Ervin, Woody Shaw. In seguito un periodo di sosta attiva nella quale si è impegnato in concerti e ha studiato composizione e si è laureato. Ha lavorato nel “New York State Council For The Arts”, ha inciso con Lee Konitz, Ted Curson, Cecil McBee, Robin Kenyatta e Barry Altshul. Sebbene contemporaneo, egli resta un pianista tradizionale, ispiratosi a Tatum, Powell, Monk, e quando compone o improvvisa introduce elementi della tradizione africana. Egli è convinto che il jazz non venga soffocato dal progresso, ma anzi da questo debba essere elevato, in quanto la musica nera deve man mano affrancarsi dai legami delle musiche europee. Resta un ottimo compositore e un pianista di talento. Come altri suoi colleghi, in diverse occasioni ha raccontato la sua vita in modo diverso, dando false informazioni, cominciando col dire di essere nato ad Haiti, con l’idea che alla gente l’esotico piacesse; si è tolto sei anni dicendo di essere nato nel 1937, volendo passare per un bambino prodigio.

Ha debuttato al Leroy’s di Harlem e poi è entrata nello spettacolo di MaRaney come cantante e ballerina. A Chicago ha lavorato con King Oliver al Palladium Dance Hall nel 1926. Nello stesso anno ha registrato “Trouble in mind blues” con Louis Armstrong. In seguìto ha avuto un periodo travagliato nel quale ha fatto i mestieri più diversi e umili, è stata investita da un’auto e nell’incidente ha perso un occhio. Nel 1946 grazie all’aiuto di Rudy Blesh ha ricominciato a lavorare in qualche locale di New York. Ha registrato con i Blue Serenade di Lovie Austin, ha partecipato al memorial in onore di Bessie Smith al Town Hall il primo gennaio 1948. E’ venuta anche in Europa al Festival del Jazz di Parigi. E’ morta purtroppo investita da una automobile. Cantante di blues classico, detta anche “Chippie”.

Indicava un abitante del sud dei Monti Apallachiani, fra il Knetucky ed il Tennesee. Nel Jazz indica la musica nata in questa regione. Questa musica ha influenzato diversi bluesmen della costa occidentale come: Blind Blake, Willie McTell, Peg Leg Howell, Blind Boy Fuller e negli anni cinquanta il “rock’n’roll”.

Anche suonando nei locali della città, il suo lavoro principale è stato l’impiegato alle Poste e poi il tassista, cosa che non gli ha impedito di fare il musicista. Ha suonato con Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Stan Getz, Max Roach. Nel 1958 ha fatto la sua prima registrazione con Charlie Byrd, ha suonato con Milt Jackson, Bill Harris e nel 1978 incide il primo disco come leader. Nel 1981 ha partecipato al Northsea Jazz Festival di La Haye. Ha accompagnato Shirley Horn al Chicago Jazz festival del 1990, è stato membro del Tenor Conclave nel 1992 e ha fatto parte del Rein de Graff’s trio. Sassofonista in bilico tra Getz e Gray.

Ha iniziato ad accostarsi alla musica all’età di dieci anni, studiando prima la tromba, poi il trombone e suonando il sasssofono nella orchestrina della scuola. In seguito ha scelto come suo strumento il contrabasso che ha iniziato a studiare a 17 anni. Ha studiato privatamente con Richard Davis e poi alla Berklee School of Music e all’Hunter College. Ha iniziato a suonare e a registrare con McCoy Tyner nel 1972, poi con Phorah Sanders nel 1973. Nel 1974 è stato partner di Enrico Rava in alcuni concerti europei ed in Italia ha registrato con Massimo Urbani. Ha suonato con Fred Hersh, poi nel 1977 con Max Roach, con Bob Moses e Joe Loke nel 1982, con Rory Stuart. Ha iniziato l’attività freelance, ha collaborato con George Coleman, Betty Carter, JoAnne Brackeen, Chet Baker, Billy Eckstine, con la Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Sonny Stitt, James Moody, Marlena Shaw, Larry Coryell, Connie Crothers. Ha registrato con Michael Carvin, Dick Griffin, Lou Donaldson, Gordon Lee, Hugh Lawson, Lee Konitz, Gil Coggins, Junior Mance, Michael Cochrane, Bill Harper, Cecil Bridgewater ed altri. Ha anche insegnato alla Long Island University, alla Housatonic Community College di Bridgeport nel Connecticut, alla Mannes-New School e molte altre scuole di New York e del New Jersey.
HILL CHIPPIE, BERTHA . (VC)
Charleston, SC. 15/3/1905. – New York, 7/5/1950.
Ha iniziato a cantare in chiesa a nove anni e nel 1918 si è trasferita con la famiglia a New York. Nel 1919 ha iniziato a lavorare nel balletto di uno show di Ethel Waters. In seguito ha fatto parte come cantante e ballerina del Ma Rainey’s Rabbit Foot Minstrels fino al 1920. Ha lavorato nel circuito dei cantanti di blues della Theater Owners Booking Association. Nel 1925 si è trasferita a Chicago dove ha lavorato con musicisti importanti come King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Richard M.Jones e Lovie Austin con il quale ha fatto una tournée nel 1929. Ha collaborato con Thomas A. Dorsey e con Tampa Red. Ha in seguito lavorato nei locali di Chicago, al Cabin Inn con Jimmy Noone nel 1937, al Club DeLisa dal 1939 al 1940. Ha rallentato l’attività per dedicarsi alla famiglia, ha registrato con Lovie Austin nel 1946, nello stesso anno lavora al Club DeLisa e nel 1947 è andata a New York per partecipare al programma radiofonico “This Is Jazz”, qui ha lavorato anche al Village Vanguard con Jimmy Ryan e nel 1948 ha partecipato ad un concerto alla Carnegie Hall con Kid Ory e poi è andata la Festival del Jazz di Parigi sempre con Kid Ory. Nel 1949 ha lavorato al Central Plaza, sino al 1950 al Riviera Club, al Blue Note di Chicago con Art Hodes ed al Ryan e al Stuyevant Casino di New York. Al culmine del successo e della popolarità la sua vita è stata stroncata da una macchina nel traffico cittadino.

Ha debuttato nel 1924 con Claude Hopkins, ha suonato poi con”La Revue Negrè”nel 1925. Ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Chick Webb, poi con Benny Carter dal 1931 al 1934, con Willie Bryant nel 1935 e con Bobby Martin. Nel 1939 sino al 1940 ha svolto attività in Svizzera. Tornato in America ha lavorato con Zutty Singleton, poi con Louis Armstrong. In seguito ha ricoperto un incarica nel sindacato dei musicisti di New York e ha svolto attività freelance. E’ stato anche un ottimo suonatore di bassotuba.
HILL FREDDY, FREDERICK ROOSEVELT. (TP)

Ha frequentato il Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College ed ha suonato nella sua orchestra insieme ai compagni di studi Julian e Nat Adderley. Dopo aver fatto il servizio militare nel 1955 ha insegnato nelle scuole pubbliche della Florida sino al 1957. Si stabilisce a Los Angeles dove ha suonato con Gerald Wilson dal 1957 al 1966, anche con Earl Bostic dal 1959 al 1960, ha registrato con Leroy Vinegar, con Lou Blackburn nel 1963, con Buddy De Franco nel 1964, con Louie Bellson, con Gil,Fuller, con Dizzy Gillespie nel 1965, con Oliver Nelson nel 1967 e con Bobby Bryant nel 1969 e nel 1971.

Pianista ed insegnante di scuola, concertista e compositrice che è conosciuta soprattutto per una canzoncina, ritenuta non a torto di dominio pubblico e universalmente conosciuta, ”Happy Birthday To You”.che è stato pubblicato nel 1912 ed il suo massimo della popolarità l’ha raggiunto nel 1930.
HILL TEDDY, THEODORE. (ST)
Birmingham, Alabama. 7/12/1909. – Cleveland, Ohio. 19/5/1978.
La sua carriera è iniziata nel 1926 nell’orchestra della rivista delle sorelle Witheman. Ha suonato poi con i “Fuzzy Wuzzies”di Frank Bunch. Trasferitosi a New York ha lavorato con George Howe e nel 1928 con Louis Russell che aveva rilevato l’orchestra di Howe. Nel 1932 ha suonato con James P. Johnson, con King Oliver e quindi ha messo su la sua orchestra e sino agli anni’40 ha suonato nei migliori locali di New York ed è diventata una delle più popolari orchestre swing di Harlem, ha nelle sue fila molti giovani promesse con Chu Berry, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Coleman ed altri. Prevalentemente suona al Savoy Ballroom, ha lavorato per la radio ed ha fatto delle tournée con uno spettacolo del Cotton Club, con il quale ha debuttato anche al Palladium di Londra. Nel 1940 ha sciolto l’orchestra per dirigere il “Minton’s Playhouse”, nel quale ha organizzato jam session e presto il suo locale è diventato il famoso laboratorio dove è nato il bebop, la nuova musica che gli deve molto per l’impegno profuso. Nel 1969 è diventato il gestore del Baron Lounge.

Musicista che ha esordito come leader insieme a Marshall Allen incidendo l’album “Out Of The Box”. Ha registrato anche con Jeemel Mondoc. Ma soprattutto ha trascorso quasi tutta la vita di musicista nell’Arkestra di Sun Ra, nella quale è rimasto anche dopo la scomparsa del maestro. Trombonista dal suono robusto, che ha dato la sua impronta nei numerosissimi dischi registrati con Sun Ra. Solista dal linguaggio piuttosto schematico, senza fronzoli.

In giovinezza ha suonato il violino nel Far West e si dice abbia diretto la prima orchestra di jazz del West a Salt Lake City. Trasferitosi a New York si occupò come portiere, intanto componeva e vendeva le sue composizioni in buona parte ispirate all’ambiente western. Il suo primo successo “The Last Round-Up”.

Cresciuto nell’ambiente gospel di Dallas, ha subito all’inizio l’influenza di Bobby Bland, ma con una poetica più secca e cruda. In seguito segue anche il blues predicante di Johnnie Taylor. Cantante dalla voce baritonale a volte aspra, sferzante, brutale, dal growl fuligginoso. È scomparso al culmine del successo in un incidente d’auto.

Agli inizi degli anni ’90 ha suonato in trio con Johnny Kirkwood. Ha accompagnato diversi cantanti, Lorez Alexandria, Johnny Hartman, Al Hibbler, Eddie Jefferson, Abey Lincoln, Joe Turner, T-Bone Walzer, Joe Williams. Ha suonato e registrato anche con kenny Burrell, Sonny Criss, Art Farmer, Dexter Gordon, Plas Johnson, Harold Land, James Moody, Frank Morgan e molti altri.

E’ cresciuto e ha studiato a Detroit. Ha iniziato a suonare la tromba a undici anni. Ha studiato privatamente con Barry Harris e Bill Horner Jr. ed ha iniziato a suonare in pubblico nella metà degli anni’50. Nel 1959 ha collaborato con Yusef Lateef, nel 1960 con Joe Henderson e nello stesso anno si è trasferito a New York dove ha lavorato con Slide Hampton. Ha iniziato la collaborazione con Charles Mingus, che è continuata negli anni e con il quale ha partecipato al Concerto alla Town Hall di New York del 1962 ed al Festival di Newport del 1964. Ha suona con Barry Harris, con Charles Davis, nel 1966 ha messo sù un gruppo insieme a Charles McPherson. Trombettista che sente molto l’influenza di Dizzy Gillespie. Molto bravo nell’interpretare le ballad lente.
HI-LO’S (THE)
Gruppo vocale nato nel 1953. Inizialmente ne hanno fatto parte Gene Puerling, Clarke Burroughs, Bob Morse, Bob Strasen e Don Shelton che ha preso il posto di Strasen nel 1959. Il momento di massima popolarità è stato tra gli anni’50-’60. In seguito sono scomparsi dalla scena, ricomparendo nel 1982 anno nel quale hanno registra due album. Si sono avvalsi anche della collaborazione di un grande arrangiatore come Marty Paich. Quartetto vocale tecnicamente validissimo, molto armonico e dalla concezione molto moderna.

I genitori gli hanno fatto prendere lezioni di violino ed in seguito ha frequentato la scuola militare. Nel 1915 è andato a New York dove incontra Sophie Tucker che lo ha fatto lavorare con i suoi “Five King of Sincopation”. Ha lavorato nel vaudeville e con l’orchestra di Rudy Vallee. Nel 1932 ha avuto la sua orchestra con la quale ha lavorato al Essex House Hotel di New York ed alla radio NBC. Ha suonato con Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey e Artie Shaw. Ha anche composto diverse canzoni diventate molto popolari.
