Ha studiato alla locale Wurlitzer School of Music ed il primo ingaggio lo ha ottenuto con Yusef Latef nel 1955. Ha suonato con Horace Silver, Tommy Flanagan, Sonny Clarke, Clifford Jordan, Bennie Green, Wilbur Harden, Curtis Fuller, Cecil Taylor, John Coltrane, Kenny Dorham, Kenny Burrell, Benny Carter, Wes Montgomery. Nel 1959 è entrato a far parte del gruppo di Cannonball Adderley e vi è rimasto sino al 1965 quando ha accompagnato Oscar Peterson. Ha registrato anche con Jay Jay Johnson, Phineas Newborn, Kenny Drew, ha diretto i suoi “Jazz Comunicators” insieme a Freddie Hubbard e Joe Henderson. Ha codiretto un gruppo con Junior Cook prima e poi con Woody Shaw, Frank Strozier e Joe Farrell. Ha collaborato nel 1985 con McCoy Tyner, ha registrato anche con Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Ravi Shankar, Cedar Walton, con S.James nel 1980 e con Pepper Adams nel 1983, con Frank Morgan nel 1987. Ha suonato con Charles Tolliver, Bobby Watson, Gary Bartz, John Stubblefield, Kenny Barron, Mickey Tucker, Clint Houston, Eddie Allen, Riley Mullins, Javon Jackson, David Hazeltine, Donald Brown, Ricky Ford, Antoine Roney, con John Hiks nel 1994. Batterista hard bop molto apprezzato, dallo stile vigoroso che si rifà a Blakey e Roach.

Ha studiato il violino a otto anni e a dodici ha studiato il sax tenore. Ha debuttato nel 1950 con Kenny Baker, in seguito ha suonato con Bert Ambrose, Vic Lewis e Jack Parnell. Ha iniziato a lavorare con propri gruppi dal 1955. Nel 1956 ha studiato il vibrafono ed insieme a Ronnie Scott ha fondato il gruppo “Jazz Couriers”, con il quale ha lavorato sino al 1959. Ha suonato con Kurt Edelhagen, nel 1961 è andato negli Statti Uniti, dove ha suonato al Half Note di New York e nei migliori club d’America ed ha registrato con Clark Terry. Tornato a Londra nel 1965 ha messo su una grande orchestra con la quale ha lavorato in televisione. Ha suonato con Duke Ellington alla Royal Festival Hall, è stato presente in molti Festival Europei ed ha composto molte colonne sonore per film, tra i quali “All Night Long” nel quale compare in una scena insieme a Dave Brubeck e Charles Mingus. Sassofonista di un certo livello, ispiratosi a Charlie Parker inizialmente, in seguito i suoi modelli sono stati Sonny Rollins e John Coltrane.

Nel 1922 ha debuttato con Alex Hill, ha suonato poi con Eugene Crook. Nel 1925 è entrato a far parte della orchestra di Claude Hopkins e con lui ha effettuato una lunga tournée in Europa insieme alla Black Revue di Josephine Baker. Tornato a New York ha suonato con Wilbur de Paris nel 1927, con Eugene Kennedy nel 1929. Nello stesso anno è torna in Europa con la Blackbirds’Revue e sempre in Europa ha suonato con Willie Lewis dal 1934 al 1938 ed ha inciso diversi dischi. Ha lavorato con Bill Coleman, con gli Harlem Rhythm Makers, poi è andato a lavorare anche in Egitto. Tornato in patria nel 1940 è tornato con Hopkins con il quale ha lavorato in diversi locali di Harlem. In seguito ha lasciato la musica per un impiego in ospedale.

Sin da bambino ha suonato l’armonica a bocca, con la quale poi ha suonato con la Borrah Minnevitch Harmonica Rascal, prima di diventare l’arrangiatore ufficiale degli studi della Metro Goldwin Mayer, negli anni ’40. Dal 1945 al 1959 ha diretto la Vaughn Monroe Orchestra. Ha anche diretto ed arrangiato per la Boston Pops Orchestra. Ha anche diretto la Grand Rapid Michigan Symphony e della Florida Space Coast Pop Orchestra a Cocoa in Florida.

Ha iniziato a suonare il sassofono alto a 15 anni ed in seguito lo ha cambiato con il sax tenore. Ha lavorato in bande locali ed in seguito si è trasferito a New York dove ha iniziato accompagnando il cantante Rudy Vallee e è stato nell’orchestra di Charlie Barnet. Nel 1935 ha iniziato a suonare professionalmente con Red Norvo. Siamo in piena era swing ed è appunto in tale stile che egli ha raggiunto una certa notorietà. Ha suonato con Eddie Sauter, con Mildred Bailey, con Jimmy Dorsey dal 1935 al 1938, nel 1941 con Woody Herman, poi con Kay Kyser. Ha fatto una tournée con Benny Goodman nel 1943. Ha lavorato nella West Coast con Dave Hudkins, con Red Nichols e ha fatto il freelance. Dopo la guerra ha suonato a Los Angeles, ha partecipato ad una incisione con la Mills Blue Rhythm Band nel 1947, ha collaborato anche con Charlie Shavers, Nat King Cole, John Simmons e Buddy Rich.

Figlio di un cantante di opera, che spesso era in tournée per il mondo, Dick è nato in Argentina, ma è cresciuto a Los Angeles. Ha cantato giovanissimo con Harry James, poi con Tommy Dorsey e Benny Goodman. Diventa un maestro nella interpretazione di ballad, il maggior rivale di Frank Sinatra. Cantante dalla voce di profondo baritono, crooner molto romantico, ebbe molto successo anche per la sua prestanza fisica nelle commedie musicali e nel cinema. A differenza di Sinatra è stata considerata solo una voce pop.

Trasferitosi a New York con la famiglia, ha studia il pianoforte alla Columbia University. Ha iniziato a lavorare in orchestre da ballo e nel 1937 è entrato a far parte dei famosi Savoy Sultans di Al Cooper per il quale ha lavorato come pianista ed arrangiatore. Nel 1943 ha suonato con Frank Newton, George James e come pianista solista nei migliori club della città. Nel 1944 è stato a capo di un sestetto con il quale ha registrato dei dischi. Ha suonato con Barney Bigard, Al Casey, nel 1947 ha accompagnato Lena Horne, nel 1950 ha suonato con Noble Sissle. Per diverso tempo è stato l’attrazione del”Reuben Bleu”. In seguito ha lavorato con Andy Kirk, Cab Calloway, Reuben Phillps, nel 1960 ha guidato un suo trio con Milt Hinton e Osie Johnson. Ha continuato ad esibirsi in locali di lusso come il Rayan’s di New York. .

Figlio del più celebre batterista Roy, giovane emergente della nuova scuola jazzistica newyorkese. Egli preferisce suonare la cornetta, strumento ormai caduto in disuso. Ha collaborato con Cassandra Wilson, Vernon Reid, David Murray, George Adams, Ed Balckwell, Bill Lawsell, Steve Williamson, con i The Roots e con il padre. Musicista che passa con molta disinvoltura dal bop al funky ad atmosfere rarefatte. E’ ancora alla ricerca di una propria personalità. Ha suonato anche con Evan Parker nel 1985, nei “Five Elements” di Steve Coleman nel 1986. Ha composto musica per il cinema ed ha tenuto delle conferenze alla New York University.

HAYNES JOE, JOSEPH LAWRENCE. (P)
Marshfield, Missouri. 10/2/1907. – Dallas, Texas, 10/7/1964.
E’ cresciuto in un circo equestre, dove ha lavorato come trapezista ed ha iniziato a suonare nell’orchestra. Ha studiato il pianoforte e si interessa di arrangiamento. In tale veste ha iniziato a lavorare e nel 1932, quando ha organizzato una sua orchestra composta da ottimi elementi ma che non ha avuto molta fortuna sino a costringerlo lasciarla cedendola alla direzione di Buddy Rogers. Ne ha organizzata un’altra altrettanto valida ma con altrettanta poca fortuna che ha ceduto nel 1935. Ha lavorato con l’orchestra di Tommy Dorsey, con il quale la sua collaborazione soprattutto come arrangiatore ha contribuito a farla diventare la big band più famosa dell’epoca. In seguito ha fatto un altro tentativo, ha messo sa un’altra orchestra con la quale ha registrato dei dischi ma ancora una volta non ha ottenuto il successo desiderato. Dagli anni ’40 si è dedicato completamente all’arrangiamento stabilendosi a Dallas Musicista validissimo e molto preparato, purtroppo le sue orchestre non hanno avuto la fortuna che meritavano e che invece hanno ottenuto sotto altre direzioni.

HAYNES PHIL (DR)
Hillsboro, OR. 15/6/1961.
Suo nonno è stato un sassofonista che ha suonato con Ted Weems e con Paul Whiteman dal 1915 al 1925. Egli ha iniziato a studiare musica classica a 14 anni presso il BMus from Coe College a Cedar Rapids nello Iowa. Durante questo periodo ha suonato con Paul Smoker e nel 1983 si è trasferito a New York qui ha suonato con Andy Laster, nel 1986 ha fondato con Ellery Eskelin il gruppo cooperativo “Joint Venture”. Alla fine degli anni ’80 ha fondato un quintetto particolare formato da quattro ottoni con Herb Robertson, Andy Laster, Eskelin. Ha anche collaborato con Tom Varner, Mark Dresser, Randy McKean, Gebhard Ullman, Dave Taylor. Nel 1990 ha fondato ed ha fatto parte del Corner Store Sindacate, collettivo formato da musicisti locali per promuovere la loro musica per la durata di un festival. Egli ha perseguito il progetto di liberare il jazz da certi schemi, portandolo in altre direzioni e perché non nella musica profondamente statunitense quale è la musica country. Esperimenti dalla bontà che lascia molti dubbi.

Ha iniziato la carriera nell’area di Boston nel 1944 con Sabby Lewis, poi con Frankie Newton, Pete Brown e dal Louis Russell dal 1945 al 1947. Ha suonato con Lester Young dal 1947 al 1949, con Bud Powell, Miles Davis. Ormai si è affermato come il batterista emergente degli anni’50. Ha suona con Charlie Parker con il quale è andato in tournée e ha registrato al Pershing Ballroom, poi con Kay Winding, Thelonious Monk, Wardell Gray. Nel 1953 ha acocompagnato Sarah Vaughan con la quale è rimasto sino al 1958. Ha lavorato con Phineas Newborn, con Milton Jackson nel 1947, Lee Konitz, George Shearing, Benny Green, Sonny Rollins, Ernie Wilkins, Booker Little, Eric Dolphy, Oliver Nelson, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Gary Burton, Dave Brubeck, Red Garland, Art Pepper, Warne Marsh, Claude Williamson, Chick Corea, Kenny Eubanks, Michel Petrucciani. Ha diretto il suo gruppo “Hip Ensemble”. Questo lungo e vario elenco di collaborazioni confermano le sue grandi capacità tecniche. Batterista dalla naturale ecletticità, a suo agio nello swing, nel bop, nel jazz modale, nel free jazz e nel jazz rock. Musicista dal percussionismo agile, spumeggiante, lieve, non invadente. Egli sà stimolare il solista e forse tra i grandi batteristi il più facilmente riconoscibile. Degno erede di Clarke, Blakey e Roach.

E’ cresciuto a Greenwich nel Connecticut dove ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a sette anni ed in seguito ha studiato armonia ed il repertorio classico. Nel 1985 è arrivato a New York dove ha iniziato a lavorare con il gruppo di Ted Curson al Blue Note e mentre frequenta la Manhattan School of Music ha suonato con saltuariamente con Nick Brignola. Ha iniziato a suonare regolarmente con Bob Belden e nel 1990 ha fatto una tournée in Giappone ed ha registrato con gli Harper Brothers, poi con Steve Wilson, con Benny Golson, nel 1992 con Joshua Redman, con Seamus Blake, Eddie Henderson, Phil Woods, Benny Golson, Louis Smith, James Moody, Roy Haynes e Joe Henderson, con il quintetto di Joris Teepe e Don Braden con il quali ha anche registrato nel 1994. Nel 1995 ha collaborato con Sonny Rollins, con Tim Haggans, Greg Osby, Javon Jackson, Essiet Essiet e con Bill Stewart nei Blue Note Al, Stars. Ha anche regsitarto con Virginia Mayhew, con Rebecca Coupe Franks, con il sassofonista Scott Kreitzer, Vincete Herring, Jon Gordon, Chriss Potter, Philip Harper, Scott Wendholt, Tom Williams, Rick Margitza e nel 1996 con il sassofonista Myron Walden. Ha guidato anche numerosi suoi gruppi. Musicista emergente nel moderno mainstream. Pianista dalle grandi doti tecniche, che gli vengono anche dagli studi classici. Specie nei brani lenti mette in risalto la sua delicatezza di tocco ed il suo lirismo. Non manca però di fantasia nei brani più movimentati. Anche un buon compositore ed un organizzatore sonoro. Musicalmente si esprime nel post-bop di avanguardia.

Ha debuttato con Snookum Russell nel 1939, ha suonato poi con Kelly Martin nel 1940, dal 1943 al 1946 con Lionel Hampton, con il quale in seguito è venuto in Europa e ha registrato con lui a Parigi nel 1953. Si è esibito e ha registrato con Milton Buckner. Ha suonato con Hot Lips Page nel 1949. Ha anche registrato con Gigi Gryce.
HAYTON LENNIE, LEONARD GEORGE. (P)
New York. 13/2/1908. – Palm Springs, California. 24/4/1971.
Ha studiato con molto impegno il pianoforte classico. Ha debuttato con i Little Ramblers nel 1926, ha suonato poi con Cass Hagan nel 1927. Nel 1928 entra nell’orchestra di Paul Whiteman come pianista ed arrangiatore e vi è rimasto sino al 1930. Ha suonato anche con Joe Venuti nel 1933, con Frank Trumbauer, Bix Beiderbecke, MIff Mole e Red Nichols. Ha accompagnato e diretto Bing Crosby. Ha diretto l’orchestra del popolarissimo show “Lucky Strike Hit Parade”ed ha condotto un’orchestra da ballo di successo. Dal 1940 al 1953 è stato il direttore musicale della MGM, nel 1947 ha sposato Lena Horne e ne diventa naturalmente l’accompagnatore ed il direttore musicale. Per questa coppia celebre Quincy Jones ha scritto la bellissima “For Lena and Lennie.

Ha debuttato nel 1934 con Chester Boone e nel 1935 ha suonato con Milton Larkin. Nel 1940 ha suonato con Floyd Ray, nel 1941 con Lionel Hampton, nel 1942 con Sidney Bechet a Springfield. Dopo essere stato sotto le armi è andato in California nel 1943 dove ha suonato con il gruppo di rhythm-and.-blues Saunders King, poi con Illinois Jacquet con il quale è rimasto sino al 1951. Nel 1952 tornato a San Francisco è entra nel gruppo di Call Tjader, ha registrato con Gerald Wilson a Los Angeles ed ha continuato a suonare e registrare freelance. Dal 1955 al 1959 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Kid Ory con il quale è venuto anche in Europa. Nel 1962 ha suonato con Brew Moore e dal 1963 è tornato a Huston dove ha diretto una sua orchestra all’Ebony Club.

Il padre gli ha insegnato a suonare la batteria ed ha debuttato con Emet Hardy nel 1919. Ha suona con Tony Parenti, Johnny Wiggs e Abbie Brunies. Ha avuto un suo gruppo la “Bienville Roof”, ha suonato poi con i New Orleans Rhythm Kings, Jack Pettis, con Joe Caprano nel 1937, Lloyd Danton, con Sharkey Bonano nel 1948, George Girard, Mike Lala, Santo Pecora, Jack Delaney, guida i New Orleans Kings. Classico batterista di New Orleans.
