A tre anni ha imparato a suonare la fisarmonica e la chitarra. A diciassette anni è passato allo strumento che lo ha reso negli anni famoso, l’armonica. Dopo aver suscitato l’attenzione da parte degli appassionati di Jazz belgi, nel 1947 è andato negli Stati Uniti per breve tempo ed anche quì ha avuto l’ammirazione dei musicisti, pur senza esibirsi. Nel 1949 Benny Goodman lo ha voluto con sè in una serie di concerti a Londra. Considerato non a torto uno dei migliori musicisti di Jazz europei, nel 1951 si è trasferito negli States, dove ha avuto modo di incidere con molti grandi musicisti. Ha registrato il suo primo disco titolato alla sua migliore composizione ”Bluesette” a Stoccolma in Svezia. La sua prima scrittura con Dinah Washington, ha suonato poi con George Shearing, ha registrato con Bill Evans nel 1978, con Quincy Jones, con Oscar Peterson, con Dizzy Gillespie nel 1980, con Jaco Pastorius nel 1983, con Paquito D’Rivera nel 1984. Ha diretto un quartetto europeo con Michel Herr e Bruno Castellucci e negli Satin Uniti con Fred Hersh, Marc Johnson e Joey Baron. Ha registrato in duo con Martial Solal, nel 1992 due album di musica brasiliana e nel 1995 con Kenny Werner. In Svezia ha suonato con Sved Asmunsen, Niels Henning O. Pedersen. Ha anche accompagnato celebri cantanti pop, ha partecipato a Festival di Jazz e anche a quello della Canzone di San Remo. Ha insegnato alla Eastman School of Music di Rochester. E’ riuscito ad avere con uno strumento dalla ingrata sonorità, l’agilità e la fecondità di idee paragonabile a quella dei grandi sassofonisti cool.

Laurel, Massachussetts. 16/11/1908. – St.Louis, Missouri. 5/10/1971.
Fratello dell’altro batterista Ed è arrivato a Chicago dove ha studiato percussione con Jimmy Bertrand ed ha iniziato l’attività con l’orchestra di Bobby Boswell a South Bend nell’Indiana. Ha suonato nel Midwest con Al Wynn nel 1925, poi con Don Cheatham nel 1926, con Charles Elgart dal 1927 al 1928 ed ha accompagnato il cantante e ballerino Eli Rice. Dal 1928 al 1930 ha suonato con J.Frank Terry e nel 1930 è entrato nei “Clouds of Joy” di Andy Kirk e vi è rimasto sino al 1947. Ha inciso con Mary Lou Williams e negli anni ’60 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Singleton Palmer Orchestra. Si è trasferito in seguito a St.Louis dove ha messo su un suo gruppo che però non ha avuto molto successo e quindi è tornato con Singleton, con il quale è rimasto sino al 1969.
