Avendo concezioni musicali completamente rivoluzionarie, non è stato facile per lui affermarsi, vi è riuscito soprattutto quando ha avuto la fortuna di incontrare un produttore di una grande apertura mentale, quale è stato Lester Koenig, che gli ha fatto registrare due album, che hanno svelato al mondo la sua rivoluzione musicale. Molti musicisti contemporanei erano alla ricerca di una strada per uscire dal dedalo armonico del susseguirsi degli accordi. Egli ha proposto il salto, eseguendo l’assolo libero dagli schemi dell’armonia. L’azione combinata nel gruppo deriva più dall’intuito che da formule predisposte in cui ritrovarsi, questo gli è stato consentito anche dai musicisti di cui si è servito che fondamentalmente erano predisposti a questo tipo di esperimento, come Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Scott LaFaro, Jimmy Garrison, David Izenzon, Billy Higgins, Ed Blackwell, Charles Moffett, Dewey Redman e suo figlio Denardo. E’ stato certamente uno dei musicisti più discussi della storia del jazz, la sua vita musicale è stata una continua sperimentazione. La sua resta una musica dall’approccio difficile per chi è stato abituato ad altri suoni, soprattutto per il suono del suo sax che oscilla tra esasperazione e fanatismo con intonazioni che lasciano perplessi. Il suo contributo resta prezioso, per la sua carica innovativa, la genialità e l’influenza avuta sulle nuove generazioni. Ha iniziato a studiare musica a quattordici anni ed a suonare un sassofono regalatogli dalla madre nell’orchestrina della scuola, dove ha incontrato Charles Moffett con il quale avrà modo di suonare nel periodo della maturità. Ha iniziato ad avere le prime possibilità di lavoro in orchestrine di rhythm and blues e qui ha incontrato un musicista che sarà molto importante per la sua maturità musicale, il sassofonista Red Connors, che gli ha fatto conoscere il bop. Purtroppo ha dovuto continuare ad accettare qualsiasi tipo di impegno per vivere, anche scritture in gruppi minstrels. A Baton Rouge con il gruppo di Clarence Samuel Mississippi al termine di una esibizione è stato aggredito dagli ascoltatori per il suo modo di suonare. Nel 1949 è andato a New Orleans ospite del clarinettista Melvin Lassiter e qui ha preso coscienza di ciò che voleva esprimere con la sua musica. Si è trasferito a Los Angeles alla fine del 1949 e vi è restato sino al 1954. Qui Ed Blackwell, Bobby Bradford, James Clay, Don Cherry, Billy Higgins, Don Payne, Walter Norris, Red Mitchell, contribuiranno anche come collaboratori alla sua affermazione. Percy Heath lo ha presentato a Nesuhi Ertegun, proprietario dell’Atlantic, il quale oltre a fargli incidere vari dischi gli ha fatto ottenere una borsa di studio per la School Of Jazz di Lenox diretta da John Louis. Nel frattempo si è sposato con Jayne ed ha avuto un figlio Denardo; si è trasferito a New York dove ha ottenuto una scrittura al Five Spot, nel 1960 ha partecipato al Festival Internazionale di Monterey, nel 1962 è stato protagonista del famoso concerto tenuto alla Town Hall di New York. Si è ritirato dalla scena musicale per studiare la tromba ed il violino. E’ ricomparso nel 1965 scritturato al Village Vanguard, ha composto una colonna sonora, mai utilizzata, per un film di avanguardia diretto dal regista Conrad Rooks. E’ venuto in Europa, in Italia a San Remo per il Festival Internazionale del Jazz. In patria ha alternato concerti a registrazioni. Il figlio Denardo ha iniziato ben presto a far parte del suo gruppo, mentre Ornette, ormai famoso, è andato esibendosi in tutto il mondo, sentendo il bisogno di conoscere le musiche di tutte le civiltà. Ha trasformato una stanza della sua casa al Greenwich Villane in una sala per concerti e registrazioni, ottenendo una marea di riconoscimenti. La sua affermazione è stata una delle più contrastate della storia del Jazz.

Chicago, Illinois. 1956.

E’ cresciuto nel South Side con il padre un grande ammiratore di Charlie Parker e la madre che non perde occasione per ascoltare Dinah Washington e Billie Holiday. Ha frequentato il liceo e si è appassionato alla musica funk. Inizia a suonare il violino con l’orchestrina della scuola ed a studiare il sassofono. A 18 anni si è applicato seriamente, ascolta con attenzione i dischi di Charlie Parker ed ha iniziato ad avere degli ingaggi importanti. E’ arrivato a New York ha lavorato con Thad Jones, nella Orchestra Jones/ Lewis, con Bob Brookmeyer, con David Murray, con Sam River nel 1983, con Slide Hampton. Arriva anche la svolta, crea con Greg Osby e Cassandra Wilson il ”M-Base”, un colletivo di musicisti autogestito. Ha iniziato la collaborazione con Dave Holland che dura quasi dieci anni. Ha diretto un gruppo dei “Five Elements”, ha fondato il gruppo “Metrix”, il sestetto “Renegade Way”, i “Mystics Rhythm Society” nel quale ha riunito musicisti di qualsiasi nazionalità. Negli ultimi anni il gruppo “Afrocuba de Matanzas”. Ha anche collaborato nel corso della carriera con Abbey Lincoln, poi con Chico Freeman, con Evan Parker, con Cedar Wilson, con M. S. Smith nel 1987. Ha diretto il “Collective Black Artist Band”, con il quale ha suonato per le strade di Manhattan. Ha registrato con Brandford Marsalis, Billy Hart, Michael Rosewoman. Altro suo gruppo i “Strata Institute”, poi i “Renegade Way”. Sassofonista il cui punto di riferimento è stato Charlie Parker, solista dalla voce aggressiva e incisiva, dal timbro secco. Si è cimentato con le musiche di tutto il mondo senza lasciarsi contaminare da esse. Musicista delle ultime leve, una via di mezzo tra l’avanguardia di Blythe, di Freeman e l’attuale hard bop. Non accetta che la sua musica sia chiamata Jazz poiché egli ritiene tale termine sia limitativo, egli segue la sua strada della tradizionale musica nera su un ritmo binario, con spunti di rhythm and blues, del post free e sonorità jungle ed altri spunti tratti dalle varie fasi della musica nera.

Trenton, NJ. 3/7/1926. – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 22/12/1997.

Musicista autodidatta ha iniziato l’attività professionale nel 1939. Nel 1941 ha fatto parte di una banda militare e dal 1945 al 1948 ha suonato con i “Slappy and his swingers”. Lo stesso anno è entra nel gruppo di Eddie Cleanhead con il quale è rimasto sino al 1951. Lasciato Vinson ha organizza un gruppo del quale ha fatto parte anche Philly Joe Jones, nel 1952 un altro con Bull Mose Jackson. Ha suonato poi con Gene Ammons nel 1952, con James Moody nel 1956 e nel 1958 è entrato nell’orchestra diretta da Gil Evans, con il quale ha realizzato delle ottime registrazioni che lo hanno fatto conoscere al grosso pubblico. Negli anni ’60 ha registrato come leader, ha collaborato con Count Basie e con Frank Morgan. Nel 1963 è entrato nel gruppo di Charles Mingus e l’anno dopo con lui ha partecipato ad una memorabile tournée europea. Ha suonato con Herbie Hancock nel 1968, con Ray Charles, con Duke Ellington nel 1972 con il quale rimane sino al 1974 epoca della morte di Duke. Nel 1982 è ritorna con Philly Joe Jones, nella “Mingus Dinasty” e nel 1985 con l’orchestra di Count Basie diretta da Thad Jones dopo la morte del suo leader. E’ tornato con Ray Charles, ha lavorato come freelance, con Gil Evans per una serie di concerti e con il gruppo del percussionista Warren Smith e la sua “Composers Workshop Ensemble”. Musicista poco noto anche per la sua scarsa attività, ma resta un musicista molto delicato, la sua vena poetica manifesta la sua origine Davisiana e ne fa anche un moderno Bix Beiderbecke nero americano, non a caso una delle sue migliori interpretazioni è stato Davemport Blues di Bix inciso con Gil Evans.

Ha studiato al College di San Francisco, teoria e composizione. Musicista che ha fatto parte del jazz d’avanguardia di Toronto. Ha suonato con Michael Snow e Bill Smith due bandiere di questo movimento. Nel 1977 ha registrato “Solo Saxophone Recordinh” un concerto da solo, alla maniera di alcuni musicisti di Chicago tipo Braxton e Mitchell. Ha fatto parte anche della New Orchestra Workshop di Vancouver.

COLIANNI JOHN (P)

Paterson, NJ. 7/1/1963.

E’ cresciuto a Washington D.C., e dopo aver studiato diversi strumenti ha scelto di imparare a suonare il pianoforte. Riceve le prime lezioni dal padre sassofonista e pianista non professionista. A quindici anni già suona da professionista. Partecipa a spettacoli locali, tra i quali il “Jazz Stars of the Future”, al quale prendono parte anche Terry Line Carrington e Geri Allen. A 17 anni si è trasferito con la famiglia ad Atlantic City nel New Jersey. Per un breve periodo si è esibito come solista a Las Vegas. Tornato ad Atlantic City ha lavorato con un suo trio al Resort Hotel. Nel 1982 è entrato a far parte della grande orchestra di Lionel Hampton, con il quale rimane per tre anni. Nel 1987 ha ricevuto il primo premio al “Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition”. In seguito ha suonato con Oliver Jackson, nel 1989, poi con John Kirby e ha accompagnato e registrato con Mel Tormè. Ha pubblicato “From Danny Boy to Black Hole Sun: 10Jazz Arrangments For Solo Piano” nel 1995. Cresciuto all’ombra del revival pianistico di Art Hodes ha scoperto il pianismo di Oscar Peterson e di Bill Evans. Comunque un musicista interessante, completamente legato alla tradizione, il suo modello è Teddy Wilson. Più valido come accompagnatore che come solista.

Ha iniziato la carriera come pianista nei cinema e nei teatri. Nel 1928 ha lavora in Svizzera e nel 1929 in Francia. Dopo una tournée in Tunisia è tornato in Francia dove lavora come pianista, organista ed arrangiatore nei nighclub di Liegi. Ha suonato con l’orchestra di Fud Candrix ed ormai ha acquisito la fama di uno dei migliori musicisti di Bruxelles. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale si è stabilito a Antwerp e dal 1947 al 1953 è tornato a vivere a Bruxelles e poi a Charleroi. Ha suonato anche in Germania come organista. Ha registrato come solista e come leader di un gruppo.

Associazione nata nel 1970 per presentare, esaminare e preservare la musica nera ed aiutare artisti in difficoltà. Attualmente essa è diretta da Reggie Workman, che organizza seminari, workshop e concerti nei quali ha impiegato anche il proprio gruppo, composto da Stanley Cowell, Frank Foster, Cecil Bridgewater, Charles Sullivan, Joe Chambers e Jimmy Heath. La finalità del gruppo è soprattutto proteggere la musica nera e le sue radici.

COLLECTIVE QUARTET.

Gruppo nato a Zurigo, composto dal trombonista Jeff Hoyer, dal pianista Mark Hennen, dal percussionista Heinz Geisser e dal bassista William Parker. Gruppo che si inquadra nell’avanguardia europea che segue la improvvisazione radicale, anche se stando l’americano William e avendo i tre tedeschi studiato negli U.S.A. lo stile è meno radicale ma più vicino al jazz classico.

COLLECTIVE IMPROVISATION.

Improvvisazione simultanea di parte o di tutti i membri di un gruppo. Naturalmente tale performance viene concordata e provata in precedenza dai musicisti. E molte volte è regolarmente scritta.

COLLECTORS ITEMS.

Casa discografica fondata negli anni ’70 da John A Holley a Walton-on-Thames, in Inghilterra. All’inizio pubblica ristampe ed in seguito il suo è un catalogo di qualità con pubblicazioni rare di jazz e di swing. Casa ancora attiva negli anni ’80.

COLLETT FRANK TAGLIERI. (P)

Figlio di una pianista, con un padre tenore ed un nonno clarinettista che ha fatto parte dell’orchestra diretta da Arturo Toscanini, egli non poteva che avere una sola passione, cioè la musica. A quattro anni siede già dietro un pianoforte, a sei ha ottenuto una borsa di studio alla Julliard e a otto si è esibito alla Carnegie Hall di New York. A nove anni ha ascoltato del jazz alla radio e se ne innamora e a diciotto ascolta un disco di Buddy Collette. Nel 1958 è diventato Frank Collett, ed inizia la carriera di pianista di jazz. Da allora ha avuto modo di collaborare con moltissimi musicisti i quali tutti hanno avuto per lui una grande ammirazione, tanto che la critica lo ha definito “L’uomo che può suonare benissimo qualsiasi cosa”. Ha suonato tra gli altri con Shelly Manne nel 1984 e con Gibbs/DeFranco. Musicista dalla grande professionalità, accurato, in possesso di grande buon gusto. Dall’approccio stilistico evoluto e dalla suggestiva polivalenza espressiva, lontana da particolari convenzioni.

Ha collaborato nel 1968 con Sarah Vaughan, Barbra Streisand, Tom Jones, Louis Armstrong, Sammy Davis Jt., Bill Cosby, Perry Como ed altri.
