Voce femminile attiva sia nel pop che nel jazz, dimostratasi anche una valida compositrice. Figlia di un celebre giornalista televisivo John Calloway ed una sorella cantante affermata a Broadway. Cantante più conosciuta per aver scritto la musica e per aver interpretato un personaggio molto popolare alla TV. E’ stata anche protagonista del musical di successo “Broadway Swing”, per il quale ha ricevuto il World Award per il teatro, ed il “Tony” come miglior attrice non protagonista per il musical. Nel 2006 ha conseguito un master class al Cornish College of the Arts. Voce di contralto sensuale ma anche esuberante e sanguigna, che propone una moderna miscela di jazz, blues e pop.

Richmond, Virginia. 6/3/1918. – Saugus, California, 8/3/1992.

Ha debuttato nel 1933 con Banjo Bernie, sino al 1937 ha suonato con gruppi anonimi, il primo ingaggio importante nel 1937 a Los Angeles con Louis Armstrong, poi con George Johnson detto Happy Trombone nel 1938, poi con Nat King Cole e con Lester Young nel 1942. Ha suonato con un suo trio al “Susy Q Club” di Hollywood, ha collaborato con Johnny Otis, Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker, Wardell Gray, Art Tatum, Buddy Collette. Nel 1947 ha suonato con Erroll Garner con Gerald Wilson, Doc Cheatham, John Carter e negli studi di registrazione con molti gruppi moderni. Nel 1949 ha costituito un gruppo del quale ha fatto parte anche Charles Mingus all’inizio della carriera. In seguito ha suonato con Jerry Fielding ed ha accompagnato molti artisti di varietà. Ha suonato nella “Nephonic Orchestra” di Stan Kenton, con James Newton e Horace Tapscott. Ha svolto una notevole attività nel campo cinematografico, registrando molte colonne sonore di film. In collaborazione con Elaine Cohen ha scritto un’opera autobiografica “Unfinished dream, the musical world of Red Callender” del 1985. Musicista ancora molto attivo negli anni ’90. Solista splendido in qualsiasi contesto, ha seguito la strada tracciata da Jimmy Blanton. E’ stato il primo ad usare il basso tuba in chiave moderna negli anni ’50.

Voce blues del profondo sud, una vera e propria legenda. Dal 1912 al 1917 si è esibito in coppia con Garfield Akers, lavorando in feste private, dal 1918 ha fatto coppia con Frank Stokes. Nel 1930 è insieme a Garfield Akers e nel 1959 alla morte di Akers ha lasciato l’attività. Nel 1967 è stato riscoperto come altri suoi colleghi da George Mitchell, che gli ha fatto registrare dei dischi e lo ha fatto esibire al Menphis Folk Blues Festival.

Cantautore di spicco nel moderno scenario afroamericano. E’ cresciuto nel North Side di Chicago ed ha iniziato a studiare pianoforte a tre anni. A undici anni ha scritto la sua prima canzone, in seguito ha imparato a suonare anche la chitarra. Per diverso tempo attivo solo in provincia e venuto alla ribalta e riscoperto negli anni ’90. Profondamente spirituale, un eclettico racounter, che ha unito le sfumature intimistiche del suo concittadino e modello Oscar Brown Jr., alle forme ed i colori del folk, del gospel e del soul, con echi di jazz.

Sorella maggiore di Cab Calloway, ha studiato al Morgan State College. All’inizio ha rifiutato delle scritture come cantante in vari club della sua città, in seguito però ha accettato l’ingaggio al più famoso “Ciro Club” di New York. Dopo ha lavorato a Chicago e qui nel 1925 ha registrato con Louis Armstrong e con Richard M.Jones. Nel 1931 ha lavorato con il gruppo di Andy Kirk al Pearl Theatre di Filadelfia. Dal 1932 si è esibita con un suo gruppo gli “Her Joy Boys”e dal 1938 ha iniziato a lavorare come solista. Nel 1960 ha diretto una stazione radio in Florida, dove ha cantato ed ha fatto anche la disc jockey. E’ stata attiva anche in politica. Nei suoi gruppi hanno suonato diversi grandi musicisti. Cantante che si è sempre imposta per il suo fermo e profondo timbro di voce.

CALLOWAY CAB CABELL III (VC)

 

Rochester, NY. 25/12/1907. – White Plains, NY. 18/11/1994.

Figlio di un avvocato e fratello di Blanche, ha frequentato corsi di legge a Baltimora e al Crane College di Chicago, per motivi economici ha dovuto lasciare gli studi. Ha messo su un numero di canto e danza con la sorella Blanche esibendosi in vari locali di Chicago. Già dal 1925 ha inciso con la sua orchestra con il nome di “Cotton Club Orchestra” e nel 1929 come “The Missourians”. Giunto a New York al seguito di un gruppo”The Alabamians”, ha organizzato una propria orchestra che nel giro di poco tempo ha raggiunto il successo. Ha ottenuto una scrittura al famoso Cotton Club di Harlem dove ha sostituito quella di Duke Ellington e nel 1934 ha fatto una tournée in Europa. Salvo una breve parentesi di tre anni, nei quali ha diretto un piccolo gruppo con il quale di esibiva sopratutto come cantante, ha continuato a mietere successi con la grande orchestra. Nel 1952 è tornato in Europa insieme ad una troupe negra per rappresentare Porgy and Bess di Gershwin nella quale ha interpretato la parte Sportin’Life, ha fatto parte anche del cast di Hello Dolly. Ha girato anche diversi film, l’ultimo “The Blues Brothers” sarà il suo canto del cigno. Cantante commediante dal canto scat, dalla voce tenorile, nasale, con sfumature esotiche e lamentose, dal blues affettato. Musicista che ha diretto orchestre che hanno avuto successo, specie quelle più recenti, sopratutto per l’apporto di ottimi musicisti, come: Ben Webster, Chu Berry, Dizzy Gillespie, Jonah Jones, Hilton Jefferson, Milt Hinton, Cozy Cole, ecc.

CALZADO RUDY (VC-ARR).

Santiago, Cuba, 1929. – Cuba, 17/5/2002.

Ha iniziato la carriera nel 1948, essendo dissidente nei confronti del regime di Fidel Castro, è emigrato negli Stati Uniti nel 1983 e qui ha incontrato Mario Mauza ed è entrato a far parte della sua orchestra. In seguito è tornato nella sua Cuba, dove si è unito ad un gruppo di vecchie glorie della grande musica di cuba, della quale egli è stato uno degli artefici, cogliendo un grande successo. Nel 2000 ha fatto parte del tour del “Buena Vista Social Club” con i quali ha registrato anche un album. Percussionista e cantante, è considerato l’erede di Mario Bauza il padre del latin jazz. Ha suonato anche nell’orchestra di Enrique Jorrin, l’inventore del cha cha cha.

Ha compiuto i suoi studi di composizione ed orchestrazione alla Julliard School of Music dove ha studiato anche la tromba come autodidatta. Ha avuto come insegnante di musica il direttore dell’orchestra del Metropolitan di New York, Cesare Sodero, che gli ha inculcato l’arte della direzione di una grande orchestra. Ha esordito nell’orchestra di Frank Dailey, in seguito ha suonato con Charlie Barnet, Joe Venuti, Red Norvo e Scott Fisher. Nel 1935 è entrato nell’orchestra di Jimmy Dorsey anche nella veste di arrangiatore e vi è rimasto sino al 1940, ha suonato poi con Tommy Dorsey e con Benny Goodman. Ha composto musica per programmi radio, è stato direttore musicale della Decca. Per un certo periodo ha vissuto in Europa dove a Londra è stato assunto come direttore musicale alla London Records. Tornato negli States è rientra nella Decca e contemporaneamente ha diretto i “Commanders” un gruppo swing. Nel 1958 è stato ingaggiato dalla Disney records, con la quale è rimasto per 16 anni e con la quale ha prodotto molti dischi e molte colonne sonore.

Ha iniziato a suonare la chitarra classica, per poi passare a quella jazz, suonando con Lou Bennett, Chet Baker, Tullio de Piscopo e Franco Cerri. Nel 2001 ha fatto un corso di perfezionamento presso il Berkelee College of Music a Boston. Musicista e soprattutto jazzista storico torinese. Chitarrista di salda cultura tecnica, insegnate di chitarra classica alla scuola musicale di Novara. Egli è stato soprattutto attivo in Piemonte. Musicista che filtra ogni sua esperienza musicale attraverso il jazz ed in particolare jazz vivificato dai ritmi brasiliani. A volte adotta la chitarra elettrica, che però non gradisce abituato a vivere la sua giornata con una chitarra classica tra le braccia. Musicista dalla grande perizia e dalla squisita genialità nel creare. Chitarrista che ha proposto sempre un jazz raffinato, in particolare nell’interpretazione in jazz di celebri brani francesi.

Anche chiamata “Camelia Dance Orchestra”, brass band di New Orleans attiva nel periodo dal 1917 al 1923, diretta dal trombettista, Wooden Joe Nicholas. Ha preso il nome dal piroscafo S.S.Camelia.

CAMEO.

Etichetta discografica della Cameo Record Corporation. I suoi dischi erano venduti principalmente nei negozi Macy, nella cui filiale più importante fu ingaggiata nell’ottobre del 1921 in esclusiva la cantante Lucille Hegamin con un contratto che fece epoca, per il quale la stessa si è esibita ogni due mesi sino al 1926. Diventata società per azioni, prima come Lincoln nel gennaio del 1924, poi come Romeo nel 1926 ed infine come Pathé alla fine del 1928, per diventare l’American Record Corporation nell’agosto del 1929.

CAMERO CANDIDO DE GUERRA (PERC)

Ha iniziato la carriera nell’orchestra della radio dell’Avana, è passato a suonare poi con Armando Romeu. Nel 1952 è emigrato negli States e a New York ha suonato con Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Taylor, con Stan Kenton nel 1954. Ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Duke Ellington nel 1956 con il quale ha collaborato nella registrazione della suite “A drum is a woman”. Nel 1958 è di nuovo con Gillespie, nel 1960 ha fatto parte della JATP e nel 1962 ha accompagnato Tony Bennett in un concerto alla Carnegie Hall. Ha registrato anche con Stan Getz, Wes Montgomery, Lalo Schrifin, Joe Williams, Sonny Rollins, Elvin Jones. Lavora in TV con Lionel Hampton. poi con i Jazz Messengers di Art Blakey nel 1957, poi con George Shearing, Dinah Washington, Tito Puente, Machito. Ha accompagnato Tony Bennett in una serie di tournée in tutto il mondo. Ha suonato anche con il gruppo di Sonny Rollins, di Elvin Jones e nell’orchestra di Lionel Hampton nel 1977. Percussionista che pur conservando tutte le caratteristiche del percussionismo cubano, si è inserito perfettamente nel contesto del jazz, garantendo una spinta notevole in tutte le sue collaborazioni.

CAMERON DOUG (VIOL-KEYB).

E’ cresciuto a New York dove ha imparato a suonare il violino a cinque anni. Ha studiato soprattutto musica classica, ha suonato nell’orchestra del Westchester Conseravtory e fatto parte della giovanile New York State Orchestra. Ha iniziato ad interessarsi dell’improvvisazione e mentre frequentava l’università di Buffalo, ha iniziato a suonare spesso nei club locali. Lo ha ascoltato Gregg Allman che lo scritturato per una tournée e per registrare dei dischi. Si è laureato nel 1978 e si è stabilito a Los Angeles dove ha iniziato a lavorare negli studi di registrazione, ha inciso con David Benoit, con George Benson e con il gruppo fusion “Xebron” di Doc Severinson. Ha anche registrato con gruppi pop, come quello di Josè Feliciano.

CAMERON ETTA (VC)

 

Nassau, Bahamas, 21/11/1939. – 4/3/2010.

Cantante di gospel e di blues nel 1948 si è trasferita con la famiglia negli Stati Uniti. Da bambina frequenta entra a far parte del coro gospel della Chiesa metodista. Nel 1960 si è trasferita in Danimarca, vivendo a Copenhagen. Ha fato parte della NDR Bigband, della Danish Radio Bigband, ha collaborato con Clarke Terry, Thad Jones, Ed Thigpen, Horace Parlan, Herb Geller, Frank Foster, Dusko Goykowich, Ben Webster, Mikkelborg Palle, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, Marylin Mazur ed altri. Ha anche fatto parte di compagnie teatrali ed ha anche lavorato nel campo della pop music. Nel 1986 ha insegnato all’Accademia di Musica a Lund in Svezia e dal 1995 insegna al Conservatorio di Musica Rytmisk di Copenhagen.

New York, 14/9/1928.- 20/3/2001.

Cresciuto ad Hartford nel Connecticut, a 15 anni ha iniziato a suona il sax baritono. Si è trasferito con la famiglia in California a Los Angeles e qui ha debuttato nel 1946 con Ike Carpenter, ha suonato poi con Rex Stewart nel 1949, con il quale ha fatto anche una tournée in Europa, finita la quale egli rimasto nel continente. Ha lavorato soprattutto a Parigi con Sadi e con Henry Renaud. E’ tornato negli Stati Uniti, dove ha suonato con Woody Herman nel 1956, poi con Maynard Ferguson, Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Slide Hampton, ha diretto anche un suo gruppo. Nel 1956 ha intrapreso la carriera di sindacalista ed ha aperto un negozio di articoli musicali. Profondamente immerso nel cool, ne è stato uno delle più belle voci per il suo strumento, dal timbro delicato e pieno di swing.

Nella sua famiglia ci sono diversi musicisti, ma lei ha scelto la recitazione. In seguito ha deciso di fare la cantante, soprattutto dopo aver sposato il bassista Charlie Haden. All’inizio della sua carriera di cantante ha lavorato sia negli Stati Uniti che in Europa. In seguito, dopo il matrimonio, si è impegnata anche come manager del marito.

Trombonista naturalizzato francese, ha esordito professionalmente con Maxim Saury nel 1956 ed è rimasto con lui sino al 1966. Ha accompagnato in tournée francesi Sidney Bechet, Jimmy Rushing e Stuff Smith. E’ stato anche per breve tempo con Jacques Denjean. Nel 1969 come membro dei François Guin’s Four Bones ha accompagnato Paul Gonsalves e Roy Eldridge. Strumentista molto versatile ha fatto parte di gruppi di stili molto diversi come quelli di Marc La Ferriere, Danny Doriz, Sonny Grey, Calude Luter, Claude Bolling, Ambrose Jackson, Cat Anderson, Aimè Barelli, ha accompagnato la cantante Peggy Lee. Negli anni ’90 ha fatto parte del Five O’Clock Jazz Group, diretto dal sassofonista Jacques Benhamou.
