EDISON HARRY SWEET (TP)

Columbus,Ohio. 10 /10 /1915. – Columbus,Ohio. 27 /7 /1999.

E’ stato introdotto nell’ambiente musicale cittadino dallo zio musicista ed ha iniziato a suonare nel 1930 in gruppi locali. Il primo ingaggio vero e proprio è stato quello nell’orchestra di Alphonse Trent, poi ha suonato con l’orchestra Jetter / Pillars a Cleveland dal 1931 al 1936. Trasferitosi a New York è’ passato con la “Blue Rhythm Band” diretta da Lucky Millinder nel 1937. Lo ha ascoltato Count Basie che non si è lasciato sfuggire l’occasione di averlo con sé e con lui ha suonato dal 1938 al 1950, diventando una delle sue voci importanti dell’orchestra. In seguito si è trasferito sulla costa occidentale dove ha lavorato freelance ed è stato molto richiesto negli studi di registrazione. Ha suonato anche con Lionel Hampton nel 1955, con Jimmy Rushing, con Buddy Rich, ha fatto parte della JATP, ha suonato poi con Gerald Wilson, con Lester Young e con Shorty Rogers. Ha diretto anche dei suoi gruppi ed è ritornato per breve tempo con Basie. Si è impegnato in molte tournée spesso con il suo partner ideale il sassofonista Eddie ”Lockjaw” Davis. Il suo dolce timbro ed il suo intenso ma rilassante swing lo hanno fatto diventare il partner ideale per sedute di incisione con celebri cantanti e, difatti, ha collaborato al fianco di Billy Holiday, Anita O’Day, Sarah Vaughan, Jon Hendricks, Frank Sinatra e Nat King Cole. Malgrado l’avvento del nuovo, il suo stile middle jazz resta una musica senza età ed egli può essere considerato uno dei trombettisti più versatili e completi di questo stile, anzi è da considerarsi per molti aspetti un caposcuola di esso, con la sua grande carica di swing e di drive. Ha continuato a lavorare a New York con gruppi di studio, ad apparire come ospite in grandi orchestre ed è stato anche impegnato negli Studios di Hollywood. Edison è riuscito ha esprimere la sensibilità del jazz moderno con swing. Soprannominato “Sweet” per la sua dolcezza e pacatezza.

Compagnia discografica nata a Londra nel 1892. Ha pubblicato su cilindri sino al 1901. Proprietaria la J.E.Hough Ltd. E dal 1912 anche la Edison-Bell Winner, con l’avvento del disco. Dal 1922 è stata distribuita dalla Gennett per il repertorio jazz .

 

EDIXHOVEN MARCEL (CL-CL /B)

Vlaardingen, Olanda. 6 /8 /1952.

Ha compiuti gli studi presso il liceo musicale di Rotterdam sotto la guida del clarinettista B. Vrauwdeunt. Ha fatto parte dal 1974 della Sunship Music e del Sunship Kolektief. Nel 1975 ha suonato nel trio Manus, poi con i Bunker e con Maurice Horsthuis. Nel 1977 ha preso parte a vari workshop guidati dal sassofonista Theo Loeviende e dal trombettista Lawrence ”Butch” Morris.

 

EDMAN EDDIE (P-COMP)

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 23 /10 /1879. – Rockford, Illinois. 1 /11 /1946.

Nel 1919 ha lavorato a Chicago come pianista in vari locali ed in gruppi del posto. Insieme a Kahn, Meyers e Shoebel è stato coautore di uno dei motivi più popolari nell’ambiente del jazz “Nobody’s Sweetherat”.

 

EDWARD BASS. (TUBA-B)

Atlanta, Georgia. 22 /2 /1898. – New York. 22 /8 /1965.

Durante la prima Guerra mondiale ha suonato nella banda militare e nel 1919 inizia la carriera a Philadelphia in diversi piccolo gruppi. Nel 1923 ha suonato con Sam Wooding ed alla fine dello stesso anno è diventato un elemento della famosa Charlie Johnson’s Band. Nel 1925 è andato con Duke Ellington. Alla tuba ha dato un notevole apporto a delle registrazioni della Savoy Bearcarts. Ha suonato a New York con Leon Abbey, con il quale và anche in tournée in Sud America. Viene in Europa con Noble Sissle e tornato a New York suona con Fats Waller, con James P.Johnson e con Eubie Black. All’inizio degli anni ’30 suona il contrabasso in orchestre sinfoniche.

 

EDWARDS AL FATS (VC)

Menphis, Tennessee. 1923.

E’ arrivato in Europa con le truppe americane ed alla fine della guerra si è stabilito a Parigi. Ha debuttato come cantante sempre a Parigi con il trio di Art Simmons. Ha lavorato anche con Mary Lou Williams. Si è trasferito nel 1956 in Austria, qui ha lavorato anche alla radio e alla televisione insieme a Fatty George. E’ rimasto in Austria dove lavora free-lance ed ha partecipato a spettacoli radio-televisivi. Ha inciso dei dischi con Fatty George ed a suo nome.

 

EDWARDS ARTHUR W. (B)

Fort Worth, Texas. 9 /2 /1914.

Ha iniziato a studiare il contrabbasso alla high school di Ardmore in Oklahoma ed ha completato gli studi al Wiley College nel Texas. Ha iniziato la carriera negli anni ’40. Ha suonato dal 1943 con Bud Scott e nel 1945 con Horace Henderson. Con Henderson è rimasto diversi anni prendendo parte anche a diverse incisioni realizzate per la Decca nel 1951. Nel 1955 ha collaborato con Teddy Buckner con il quale ha suonato alla “Beverly Cavern” di Los Angeles e ha registrato diversi dischi. Ha inciso anche con T. B. Walzer nel 1947.

 

EDWARDS CHARLES (ST)

U.S.A. 1927. – Detroit, Michigan. 11 /7 /1995.

Detto anche “Lefty”, nel corso della sua carriera ha suonato con il trombettista di New Orleans Dave Bartholomew e con il quale ha anche inciso per la casa King a Cincinnati. A Detroit ha registrato come leader e con Wynonie Harris per la Jazz Workshop. Nel 1949 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di King Porter e nel 1951 in quella di Todd Rhodes.

 

 

EDWARDS CLIFF UKULELE IKE (VC)

Hanniball, Missouri.14 /6 /1895. – Hollywood, California.18 /7 /1971.

Cantante molto cordiale e intelligente, è stato una stella più grandi del vaudeville degli anni’20. E’ stato uno dei primi cantanti a portare nel pop un rilassato modo di esporre le ballads. Ha venduto durante la sua carriera decine di milioni di dischi. Da ragazzo vendeva i giornali per la strada e per attirare l’attenzione dei compratori suonava l’ukulele. Ha iniziato a lavorare nel vaudeville e nel 1921 approda a Broadway dove nel 1924 è protagonista nella commedia musicata da George Gershwin “Lady Be Good”. La sua vita artistica è stata un continuo susseguirsi di successi. Alla fine degli anni ’20 ha lavorato spesso a Hollywood in diversi film con la MGM. Ha lavorato anche nella radio e negli spettacoli televisivi. Nonostante tutto questo successo e questo lavoro è morto in miseria in una casa di riposo.

EDWARDS EDDIE BRANFORD EDWIN. (TB)

New Orleans. Louisiana. 22 /5 /1891. – New York 9 /4 /1963.

Ha iniziato a studiare il violino all’età di dieci anni ed a quindici il trombone. Soprannominato “Daddy”, ha debuttato come violinista nelle orchestre teatrali ed al trombone con Jack Papa Laine nel 1912. Ha suonato poi con Ernest Giardina dal 1914 al 1916. Per aumentare le sue entrate ha giocato anche come professionista nel torneo di baseball. Si è trasferito a Chicago nel 1916 con la “Dixie Jazz Band” del batterista Johnny Stein e lo stesso anno insieme a Nick La Rocca ha fondato la”Original Dixieland Jazz Band”, della quale è anche il direttore musicale e con la quale ha partecipato alla registrazione di quelli che saranno i primi dischi di jazz incisi nel 1917. Egli và ricordato anche per aver imitato il raglio dell’asino nel brano”Livery Stable Blues” inciso nel 1917 del quale sono state vendute un milione di copie. Dopo il servizio militare si è trasferito a New York dove nel 1920 ha messo su la Eddie Edward’s Jazz Orchestra, che ha sciolto poco dopo tempo per mettersi insieme al pianista e futuro celebre comico di Hollywood Jimmy Durante. In seguito è ritornato nella Original Dixieland Jazz Band per restarvi sino al suo scioglimento nel 1925. Per due anni ha diretto la “Slipper Orchestra” e quindi ha deciso di ritirarsi dall’attività per fare l’edicolante e poi l’allenatore della squadra di baseball YMCA. E’ ricomparso sulle scene nel 1936 in occasione del revival della “Original Dixieland Jazz Band”. Ha fatto parte anche delle altre edizioni della stessa dopo la defezione di Nick La Rocca e ha partecipato allo spettacolo Tropical Revue di Katherine Dunham. Ha continuato a fare parte occasionalmente di altri gruppi tradizionali a New York, ed ha inciso anche con John Stein. Pur non essendo a livello dei grandi trombonisti di New Orleans è stato un solido strumentista tailgate. E’ stato un elemento determinante nella Original Dixieland Jazz Band ed un ottimo compositore, tra le sue composizioni molte sono diventati dei classici del dixieland. Ha registrato anche con Lou Gold nel 1925, con Brad Gowan nel 1927.

EDWARDS ESMOND.

Nassau, Bahamas. 1927. – Santa Barbara, California. 20 /1 /2007.

E’stato probabilmente il primo afroamericano ad arrivare a fare parte del personale dirigente di case discografiche. E’ stato dirigente della Prestige e della Verve. Ha prodotto dischi di Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Keith Jarrett, Art Blakey, Coleman Hawkins, B.B.King e tanti altri. Si è dimostrato anche un ottimo fotografo.

 

EDWARDS GUS.

Hohensallza, Germania. 18 /8 /1879. – Los Angeles, California. 7 /11 /1945.

E’ stato un celebre cantante di varietà e autore di canzoni divenute molto popolari. In seguito è stato anche produttore ed organizzatore teatrale e scopritore di giovani talenti tra i quali. Eddie Cantor, Eleanor Powell, Graucho Marx, Ina Ray Hutton. Và soprattutto ricordato per aver composto nel 1909 la canzone “By The Light Of The Silvery Moon” diventata molto popolare e molto spesso interpretata da jazzisti. Ha imparato a suonare la chitarra a St. Petersburg in Florida dove ha trascorso la sua infanzia. Ed a quattordici anni ha iniziato ad esibirsi. Nel 1926 ha lavorato con Tampa Red e St.Augstine. Negli anni trenta ha girovagato negli stati del sud e nel 1937 dopo aver imparato a suonare l’armonica si è messo insieme a Leroy Dallas con il quale ha partecipato al “Major Bowes Original Amateur Hour” per la CBS. Ha suonato al teatro Apollo di Harlem e nel 1941 ha registrato i primi dischi per la Okeh a Chicago. Nel 1949 registra per la Savoy ad Atlanta insieme a Curley Weaver e Willie McTell. Negli anni ’50 si è esibito quasi esclusivamente nei clubs della capitale della Georgia. Nel 1965 ha lasciato la musica per altre attività fino a quando Pete Lowry lo ha riscoperto nel 1971 e nel 1972 gli ha fatto incidere dei dischi per la Trix. Nel 1973 ha partecipato al Festival di Chapel Hill e nel 1976 a quello di Atlanta.

 

EDWARD HARRY “BASS”. (B-TUBA)

Atlanta, Georgia. 22 /2 /1898. – New York. 22 /8 /1965.

Suonando in piccoli gruppi di dilettanti si è formata una solida cultura musicale alla Morris Brown ed al Morehouse College di Atlanta. Durante la prima guerra mondiale ha suonato nella famosa banda del 350° Reggimento di Fanteria diretta dal ten. Tim Brymm. Nel 1919 si è stabilito a Philadelphia, qui ha suonato in vari complessi orchestrali classici. Nel 1923 è entrato nell’orchestra di Sam Wooding, poi ha suonato con Charlie Johnson sino al 1925 per passare infine con i Washingtonians di Duke Ellington, con i quali è rimasto sino al 1927, anche se nel 1926 su invito di Leon Abbey ha messo su l’orchestra che dovrà inaugurare il “Savoy Ballroom” di Harlem i “Savoy Bearcats” con i quali ha anche registrato. Per un breve periodo a fatto parte dell’orchestra della rivista “Blakbnirds” e poi è entrato a fare parte del complesso di Noble Sissle, con il quale è venuto anche in Europa nel 1929. Tornato negli U.S.A. ha suonato con Fats Waller, con James P. Johnson e con Eubie Blake. In seguito per una buona parte degli anni ’30 si è dedicato alle orchestre sinfoniche nell’area di New York.

 

EDWARDS JODY (VC)

U.S.A.19 /7 /1895. – U.S.A.28 /10 /1967.

Ha fatto parte dei “Butterbeans and Susie”, una delle più famose coppie di ballerini e cantanti delle compagnie di vaudeville facenti capo al circuito TOBA. Diventa famoso nel 1916 insieme alla sua compagna, Susie Hawthorne definita all’epoca “The Queen Of The Blues” con molta leggerezza. Sono rimasti sulla cresta dell’onda per venticinque anni. Hanno anche lavorato con Ethel Waters e Bessie Smith. Anche se il loro repertorio prevedeva solo raramente il blues, il loro modo di cantare però era ricco di accenti blues.

 

EDWARDS MARC (DR)

New York. 23 /7 /1959.

E’ stato avviato alla musica dal patrigno Lawrence Edwards, di cui ha assunto anche il cognome poiché il suo di nascita è sconosciuto. Ha studiato con Alan Dawson ed ha esordito nel 1976 con Cecil Taylor, con il quale ha anche registrato. Ha suonato poi con David S.Ware dal 1971 al 1991, con Charlie Gayle nel 1993. Ha costituito una sua società discografica, iniziando la carriera da leader man mano accompagnato dal sossofonista Sabin Mateen, da Rob Brown e Matthew Shipp. Batterista nel contesto del free jazz.
