BROWN CLIFFORD (TP)
Wilmington, Delaware. 30/10/1930. – Los Angeles, California. 26/6/1956.
Trombettista che è divenuto una leggenda del Jazz, morto all’apice della fama, quando conduceva la sua prima bebop band di successo. Egli ha iniziato a studiare la tromba a tredici anni con Harry Andrews direttore dell’orchestra della scuola. Ha dimostrato subito delle grandi doti tecniche nelle brevi performance fatte al fianco di Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie e Fats Navarro con il quale è stato legato da profonda amicizia e che sarà musicalmente il suo modello. Per 18 mesi è stato inattivo perché immobilizzato da un incidente automobilistico, alla ripresa, nel 1952, è entrato nel gruppo di rhythm and blues” Chris Powell and His Blue Flames” con i quali ha inciso il suo primo disco. Nel 1953 è entrato nel gruppo di Tadd Dameron con il quale ha partecipato a diverse registrazioni. Nello stesso anno è venuto in tournée in Europa con l’orchestra di Lionel Hampton. Tornato negli States ha suonato con Jimmy Heath, ha accompagnato Dinah Washington, Sonny Rollins, con Horace Silver ed ha fatto parte dei Jazz Messengers. Nel 1954 con Max Roach ha dato vita ad uno dei gruppi hard bop più importanti dell’intera storia del jazz. In seguito ha registrato con Sarah Vaughan, Helen Merrill, Barry Galbraith e Neal Hefti. Strumentista dal timbro inconfondibile, dalle linee melodiche lunghe e scorrevoli, dalla sonorità calda, vivace, dalla inventiva nell’improvvisare inesauribile, sempre lucida e rilassata. E’ stata l’ultima tromba hot. La sua voce corposa e la sua fervida inventiva lo ha fatto essere anche un accompagnatore ideale per cantanti. Nel 1954 è stato premiato dal Down Beat. Musicista di grande talento, può essere considerato il padre del moderno bop, ha influenzato tutti i trombettisti del jazz moderno, con la sua tromba ha recuperato la vecchia classicità, con una tecnica stupefacente ed una voce brillante in tutti registri. Avrebbe potuto dare ancora molto al Jazz se la sua vita non fosse stata stroncata in un incidente automobilistico a soli 26 anni mentre si recava a Elkart nell’Indiana ad acquistare una nuova tromba.

Mentre frequenta l’Università ha imparato a suonare vari strumenti e in seguito si è dedicato in modo particolare al sax alto. Ha debuttato con i Chic Scoggins nel 1936, poi ha suonato con Claude Thornill, con l’orchestra Casaloma nel 1941. Anche apprezzato arrangiatore, ha scritto oltre che per Thornill, anche per Jack Teagarden.

La madre è stata una cantante conosciuta per aver fatto parte dell’orchestra dei Dorsey Brothers. Egli ha iniziato a suonare la chitarra a 11 anni e ha studiato musica alla George Washington University nel 1973, composizione al Berklee College of Music dal 1975 al 1977 e improvvisazione con il pianista Charlie Banacos. Ha suonato con Tiger Okoshi dal 1979 al 1983, con Billy Cobham, Steve Smith, Bob James, Marcus Miller, David Saborn, Brecker Brothers, con Lenny White nel 1997, con il sassofonista Nelson Rangell nel 1998, con Bill Evans, George Duke ed altri.

BROWN DEBORAH (VC)
Kansas City, Missouri.
Cantante giunta alla ribalta all’inizio degli anni ’90, voce più conosciuta all’estero che negli States. Figlia di una pianista classica e insegnante di fisarmonica. Ha iniziato a studiare il violino, poi la fisarmonica ed infine ha preso lezioni di pianoforte da sua nonna. Ha frequentato l’Università ed ha venti anni ha iniziato la professione di cantante. Con il primo impegno ha girato gli States con una grande orchestra, poi l’estremo Oriente, il Giappone e dal 1985 al 1995 si è stabilita in Europa dove vive e lavora. Durante le sue performance è stata accompagnata da Roger Kellaway, Cedar Walton, Dorothy Donegan, Johnny Griffin, Toots Thielemans, Harry Edison, Benny Bailey e Horace Parlan. Ha cantato con grandi orchestre come la russa “Oleg Lundstrem Orchestra”, la svedese Sandviken’s Big Band”e la “Kluver Big Band”della Danimarca. Ha cantato in Siberia con il gruppo guidato dal sassofonista russo Nikolay Panov. Vocalist che è stata giudicata positivamente dalla critica come una voce di sicuro avvenire. Cantante seguace di Betty Carter, con un pizzico di Carmen McRae, dalla voce controllata e sciolta. Il suo punto di forza sono i toni medio-gravi e la sua buona intonazione. Forse manca di una certa disinvoltura sulla scena, anche se affronta le difficoltà di esecuzione e soprattutto lo scat con molta disinvoltura. Comunque è ritenuta una cantante jazz soprattutto nella intetrpretazione dei brani medio-veloci.

Musicista cresciuto a Menphis dove si era trasferito con la famiglia, ha frequentato la locale Università si è diplomato in pianoforte. Viene incoraggiato da un compagno James Williams a concentrarsi sul jazz. Ha fatto una certa esperienza nel r&b ed entra nel Jazz Messengers proprio al posto di Williams nel 1981. E’ costretto a lasciare l’attività per una artrosi reumatoide alle mani. Ha insegnato alla Berklee e poi alla Università del Tennessee e ha suonato solo occasionalmente con Freddie Hubbard e Lockjaw Davis. Compositore prolifico, le sue composizioni sono state registrate dallo stesso Williams, Art Farmer, Donald Byrd, Joe Faddis, Wynton Marsalis Kenny Garrett e Wallace Roney.

Ha imparato a suonare l’armonica a tredici anni ma ha iniziato a lavorare in attività fuori dell’ambiente musicale. Si è trasferito a Chicago nel 1946, lavora come tassista e ha anche l’occasione di suonare con Muddy Waters e Little Walter. Nel 1953 ha organizzato una sua orchestra con la quale ha lavorato in vari locali della città. Segue un periodo di scarsa fortuna e di lui non si hanno notizie. Ricompare nel 1970 si unisce a Eddie Taylor e Carey Bell è tornato ad essere celebre, viene conteso dai maggiori club e registra abbondantemente. Nel 1972 ha fatto parte del gruppo Chicago Blues Festival con il quale è venuto anche in Europa.

Ha iniziato a lavorare con una casa discografica specializzata nelle registrazioni di r&b. Nel 1962 la lascia per suonare nel gruppo di Chico Hamilton e ha fatto una tournée con George Russell nel 1964. Oltre ad insegnare, ha lavorato in teatro, come arrangiatore, da free lance, con Roland Kirk, Michel Legrand, Benny Carter, Billy Taylor, Diana Ross, Jones/Lewis, Herbie Hancock, Oliver Nelson, nella New York Jazz Repertory Company, Frank Foster, Lionel Hampton, Billy Cobham, Gil Evans, Don Ellis. Infine si è stabilito a Los Angeles dove ha lavorato quasi esclusivamente nel cinema. Trombonista nato sotto l’influenza di Jay Jay Johnson, molto tecnico, ha disperso il proprio talento e ciò non gli ha permesso di emergere come solista come avrebbe potuto per i suoi mezzi.

Ha frequentato il conservatorio di Filadelfia all’inizio degli anni ’70, poi ha lavorato il Olanda con il bassista John Lee nel 1972. In seguito ha girato l’Europa, ha registrato con Chris Hinze, con Joachim Kuhn, con Toots Thielemans, Charlie Mariano e Philip Catherine. A New York ha suonato con Stanley Clarke nel 1976, con Chick Corea nel 1977, quindi ha guidato un suo gruppo di jazz rock. In seguito ha partecipato al Festival di Montreux insieme a Didier Lockwood, ha fatto una tournée in Giappone con il trombettista Terry Masson. Ha registrato con Arthur Blythe. Ha al suo attivo soprattutto la direzione di uno dei migliori gruppi di fusion e jazz-rock di New York.

Mentre inizia a frequentare le prime scuole, ha iniziato anche a studiare il pianoforte sotto la guida di Deep Morgan Street soprannominato “Blackmouth”. Nel 1918 si è trasferito a Chicago qui ha iniziato a suonare con Jimmy Oden, poi nel 1929 con il trombonista Ike Rogers con il quale ha lavorato soprattutto nel South Side. Insieme a Rogers ed il chitarrista Lawrence Casey ha messo su un trio i “Biddle Street Boys”. Ha registrato anche i suoi primi dischi da solo, ha accompagna in registrazioni Mary Johnson, Alice Moore ed altre cantanti. Lontano dall’attività sino agli anni ’60, poi ha ripreso a suonare ed a registrare sino agli anni ‘70. Pianista di piano-blues e boogie-woogie, dallo stile piacevole.

Musicista che ha contribuito molto nell’opera di fondere latin jazz e soul jazz. Percussionista abbastanza vivace, nel suo stile sono miscelati hard-bop, afro-cuban, salsa e rhythm-and-blues. E’ cresciuto ad Harlem e sin da bambino ostenta la sua passione per il jazz ed il rhythm-and-blues, insieme a quella per la musica afro cubana di Tito Puente. A 15 anni ha acquistato i primi tamburi e alla fine degli anni ‘50 è entrato nel gruppo del pianista Joe Panama. Ha formato il suo gruppo i “Soul Brothers” con il quale ha registrato nel 1963 e nel 1966 ha firmato un contratto con la Prestige. Ha lavorato in concerti ed in saloni di grandi alberghi. Nel 1990 con l’avvento dell’acid-jazz ha un ritorno alla popolarità. Ha registrato anche con Cannonball Adderley alla fine degli anni ’90.

Il suo ”Say it loud:I am black and I’m proud” è diventato un inno per le masse afro-americane. Alla sua morte la salma è stata trasportata a New York, dove è stata portata su di una antica carrozza tirata da cavalli, all’Apollo Theater di Harem, dove ha ricevuto l’estremo saluto del popolo afroamericano sempre identificatosi in lui per i testi che aveva cantato e nella sua vita inquieta..

Il nonno è stato un sassofonista tenore ed uno zio trombettista. Ha iniziato a studiare musica dalla più tenera età. Ed ancora giovanissima si è esibita con la St.Louis Symphony Orchestra e la Cleveland Chambers Orchestra. Queste premesse lasciano immaginare una carriera splendida. Nel 1976 ha lasciato Cleveland per iniziare la carriera di insegnate alla Kent State University, ha frequentato l’ambiente jazzistico, il suo migliore amico è stato Joe Lovano. In seguito ha insegnato in molte università e conservatori. Si è esibita artisticamente sia in Canada che in Europa, ha portato in giro in Canada il “Tributo to George Gershwin”, che diventa anche il soggetto per un film documentario ed uno show televisivo. Nel 1998 ha registrato con Leon Thomas. Cantante ed educatrice, canadese di adozione, della quale sentiremo parlare, salvo che non sprechi banalmente le doti di cui è in possesso. Personaggio che si muove con consumata perizia, in modo felino, provocante. Dalla voce intonata, flessuosa, dal tono sostanzioso. Possiede un particolare charme ed una grinta notevole ed un feeling jazzistico molto volitivo.

Ha lasciato Dayton per New York nel 1928, qui ha suonato il banjo ed il violino con la Herbert Cowens’s Royal Garden Orchestra e nel 1932 con Sam Wooding. Nel 1935 ha suonato il basso con Snub Mosley, ha fatto parte ed ha registrato con Stuff Smith dal 1938 al 1941. Dal 1945 al 1950 ha suonato prevalentemente con Claude Hopkins, poi ha registrato con Fletcher Henderson. Ha fatto una tournée europea con Snub Mosley, poi ha suonato con Herman Chittison e dal 1955 al 1966 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Jonah Jones, con il quale ha anche registrato diversi dischi.

Figlio di un pianista di professione dopo aver seguito degli studi di medicina si è impegnato a studiare musica scegliendo come strumento il trombone. Ha iniziato a suonare da professionista con Paul Howard, poi con l’orchestra di Les Hite e nel 1932 è entrato nella grande orchestra di Duke Ellington, della quale in breve tempo è diventata una delle voci inconfondibili. E’ rimasto con lui fino alla fine della carriera. Ha registrato anche con l’orchestra di Lionel Hampton nel 1937, con Johnny Hodges nel 1938, con Earl Hines e Joe Turner. E’ stata una della colonne di Duke Ellington e i suoi interventi solistici hanno contribuito a dare ai temi ellingtoniani ancora più smalto, trombonista dalla grande carica di blues. Musicista dalla forte personalità, prediligeva i song sentimentali.

Si è perfezionato al conservatorio di Ithaca in pianoforte e sax. Ha frequentato l’Accademia Militare di New York ed in seguito ha terminato gli studi alla Duke University, dove ha diretto anche l’orchestra studentesca con la quale alla fine degli studi ha continuato ad esibirsi. Il successo è arrivato nel 1940 quando ha sostituito Charlie Barnet al Lincoln Hotel. In seguito arriva la scrittura al Glen Island Casinò ed al Mike Todd’s Theatre Cafè di Chicago. In seguito si è trasferito a Hollywood dove avrà molto successo in celebri show televisivi. In California l’orchestra, che ha avuto grande successo commerciale suonando una elegante musica da ballo piena di swing, si avvicina maggiormente al jazz, sia per gli arrangiamenti che per i solisti presenti in essa.

Ha debuttato come cantante e ballerina con i ”Queen City Minstrels”. Nel 1908 ha iniziato la carriera di cantante di blues al Little Strand Theatre di Chicago. La sua attività principale però è rimasta il vaudeville. Ha registrato a New York con i Jazzbo Serenaders nel 1921, ha cantato al Cotton Club e all’Harlem Opera House, ha partecipato a spettacoli musicali con Jelly Roll Morton. I suoi nomi d’arte sono stati diversi: Fannie Baker, Elbrown, Mildred Fernandez e Maude Jones. Ha lasciato in seguito il canto per dedicarsi a produzioni musicali.

Atlanta, Georgia. 8/9/1935.
Ha studiato diversi strumenti ad ancia con Wayman Carver, poi al Clarke College e alla Haward University ha completato la propria istruzione. Ha debuttato dopo il servizio militare con Johnny Hodges nel 1957. Si è trasferito a New York dove è entrato nel Jazz Composers Guild ed è diventato uno dei maggiori seguaci del free. Ha inciso con Bill Dixon, John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, ha suonato con Sun Ra, Mal Waldron. Viaggia in Europa dove ha suonato con Gunter Happel, Jeanne Lee, Han Bennink e Steve McCall. Tornato negli States si è dato all’insegnamento, ha studiato le origini della musica africana, ha fatto molte ricerche sui strumenti arcaici. Ha suonato in duo con Leo Smith e negli anni ’80 ha messo su ”The group”. Anche se ha fatto parte della New Thing è rimasto ancorato alla tradizione e negli ultimi tempi sono sempre più evidenti i suoi legami con Johnny Hodges e e Benny Carter anche se in chiave free.

E’ stato un innovatore nel jazz dei primi anni ed un’ottimo insegnante oltre che un ottimo direttore di orchestra. Si è laureato in musica alla New York University nel 1949, ha diretto l’orchestra della scuola dal 1949 al 1957, sempre nell’area di New York. Anche con una laurea ha proseguito gli studi alla Columbia University. Nel 1957 ha partecipato al Festival di Newport, ha poi girato l’Europa con George Wein e la sua “International Youth Band”. A New York ha organizzato la sua “Newport Youth Band”, ha collaborato con Dusko Goykovic, Albert Mangelsdorff, George Gruntz, Gabor Szabo, Gil Cuppini, Eddie Gomez, Jimmy Owens, Mike Abene, Ronnie Cuber, Ruby Braff, Eddie Condon e con Roy Eldridge. Ha suonato spesso con Lee Konitz per il quale ha anche fatto il compositore e l’arrangiatore, altrettanto ha fatto per Pee Wee Russell. Soprattutto come compositore egli ha avuto molto successo, le sue canzoni pop e le sue tonalità sono tecnicamente molto adatte a solisti come Bob Wilber, Dick Cary, Rusty Dedrick.

Cantante molto poco conosciuta, nonostante fosse una cantante di valore, una ottima interprete del rhythm-and-blues degli anni ’60. E’ stata una interprete sempre valida sia nel jazz che nel pop. Ha iniziato da bambina a cantare in gruppi gospel. Nel 1960 è stata messa sotto contratto da una piccola etichetta la Nomar, con la quale ha registrato “All Of My Mond” che ha ottenuto un grande successo. In seguito è stata sotto contratto con case editrici più importanti, ma non ha ottenuto il successo sperato.

Ha trascorso l’infanzia a Jackson nel Mississippi ed ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte a quattro anni insieme a la fratello. In seguito a sei anni è stato attratto dalla chitarra e la sceglie come suo strumento definitivo. Si è trasferito in California dove dopo aver lavorato in complessi da studio ed in locali notturni, è entrato nel gruppo di Johnny Otis ed ha inciso con T-Bone Walker. Ha registrato il suo primo LP “Chicken Fat” che ha ottenuto un discreto successo. In sostanza ci troviamo di fronte ad un buon musicista di rock and roll appassionato di jazz.

Dopo molti anni nei quali è stato lontano dalla ribalta e dal successo è riapparso sulla scena nel 1984 con un nuovo album, nel quale è accompagnato dal gruppo del chitarrista Tinsley Ellis. Voce dagli shouts cupi, velati, tenore triste, implorante e baritono sarcastico e nebbioso. Personaggio istrionico, irresistibile shouter del North Carolina, preacher profano. La sua maggiore interpretazione “Night Time Is The Right Time”.

Organista profondamente radicato nel blues, ha registrato ed ha avuto una certa popolarità dalla metà degli anni ’60 alla metà degli anni ’70. Ha guidato il gruppo “The Organ-Izers”dal 1961, formato da studenti dell A & M University del Tennesee. In seguito il gruppo si è sciolto ed egli ne ha messo su un altro a Chicago nel 1964. Dal 1964 al 1969 ha registrato diversi album, vincendo nel 1966 il Bilboard Magazine Award come miglior gruppo.

Price a Buffalo, Don Albert in Texas dal 1958 al 1960. Agli inizi degli anni’60 si è trasferito in Canada dove ha conseguito un buon successo. E’ cresciuto in una famiglia del ceto medio nero. E’ diventato il cantautore ufficiale della Bronzeville di Chicago. Drammaturgo, attore, nel jazz è conosciuto soprattutto per aver collaborato come paroliere con Max Roach nella stesura della opera ”We Insist! Freedom Now Suite”. Ha anche collaborato con Miles Davis in All Blues”, in “Afro Blues” di Mongo Santamaria, con Clarke Terry in ”One Foot In The Gutter”. Ma il meglio del suo talento lo ha prodotto nella incisione con la Columbia registrata tra il 1960 ed il 1962 nella quale ha dato vita ad un misto di canzoni e poesie molto drammatiche, messe in evidenza dalle orchestrazioni di Ralph Burns e Quincy Jones ed esaltate dal suo profondo timbro di voce dallo stretto ed intenso vibrato. Cantante generoso spesso nel clima tipico dell’hard bop.

Musicista nato e cresciuto a Los Angeles, ha iniziato a suonare la batteria a cinque anni e due anni dopo la chitarra. I genitori lavorano negli studi di registrazione quindi lui spesso ancora bambino li girava in lungo ed in largo, anche mentre negli stessi stavano registrando Mel Tormè o Frank Sinatra o Barbra Streisand. Ha studiato musica e matematica all’Università dell’Oregon è stato assistente in un studio di ingegneria. Ma quello che ha sempre ambito fare è stato il musicista.

Baltimora, Maryland. 9/11/1906. – New York, 20/9/1963.
Musicista autodidatta, ha imparato a suonare il piano ed il violino senza l’ausilio di alcun maestro. Ha debutta come violinista con un gruppo studentesco. E’ passato poi al sax alto, entra nell’orchestra di Banjo Berne nel 1927 e giunge a New York in tournée con la stessa. Fino al 1934 ha suonato con Charlie Skeete, poi con Willie The Lion Smith, poi Jimmie Noone nel 1937, Buster Bailey, Willie The Lion Smith, Joe Marsala, con Frank Newton nel 1939, con Coleman Hawkins nel 1947, John Kirby e Joe Turner. Ha messo su un suo gruppo con il quale si è esibito prevalentemente a New York. Sassofonista dal suono tagliente, aggressivo. Alla base del suo successo sono il largo uso dello staccato e di suonare come se stesse parlando, qualità che lo hanno fatto diventare uno dei musicisti più interessanti dell’era dello swing. Solista dallo swing pulsante ha avuto la sfortuna di dover convivere con due grandi altosassofonisti come Johnny Hodges e Benny Carter negli anni 30 e con Charlie Parker e Lee Konitz negli anni 40. L’avvento del bop lo ha danneggiato più dei suoi coetanei, perchè non è riuscito ad adattarsi. Era molto apprezzato da Parker e da Paul Desmond che lo citava come uno dei musicisti che lo avevano maggiormente influenzato.

Nato in una celebre famiglia di musicisti girovaghi, la “Brown Family Band”. A cinque anni si è meritato l’appellativo di “The world’s youngest saxophone virtuoso” in altri termini di bambino prodigio. In seguito si è stabiltoe a Los Angeles, dove ha lavorato nei migliori club ed ha raggiunto la celebrità. Ha fatto anche parte dei gruppi di Nappy Lamare, Pete Daily, Jack Teagarden, Kid Ory e Teddy Buckner. All’inizio degli anni ’70 si è trasferito a New Orleans, dove altre a suonare in gruppi revival si è dedicato alla raccolta di dischi, libri e strumenti musicali.
