BARNES GEORGE (G)
South Chicago Heights, Illinois. 17/7/1921. – Concord, California. 5/9/1977.
Dal padre, maestro di musica, ha preso lezioni di chitarra e nel 1937 ha diretto il suo primo quartetto in giro per il Middlewest. Nel 1939 è stato assunto alla NBC e poi nel 1942 è andato a Chicago per un ingaggio con Bud Freeman. Insieme a Bucky Pizzarelli ha messo su un ottimo duo di chitarre. La sua attività prevalente è stata in studio; ha inciso con Ernie Royal, Lawson/Haggart, Ruby Braff, Clarence Williams, Joe Venuti con il quale ha prodotto diversi album notevoli. Purtroppo la sua attività è stata troncata da un infarto. Chitarrista che, in un’epoca di free e rock, è rimasto legato alla tradizione swing.

E’ cresciuto musicalmente nella Eclipse Brass Band, l’orchestra della piantagione diretta da Jim Humphrey vero e proprio maestro nell’insegnamento della musica ai giovani. Nel 1904 si è trasferito a New Orleans dove è entrato nella Henry Allen Brass Band una delle più popolari bande dell’epoca. Ha suonato con il suo vecchio compagno di piantagione Chris Kelly nel 1928, con la Excelsior Brass Band di Theogene Baquet, nella Zenith Brass Band e Kid Thomas.
BARNES JOHN, JOHNNY. (CL-SX)
Manchester, Inghilterra. 15/5/1932.
Classico clarinettista di stile New Orleans, ha debuttato nel 1952 nei “Manchester Zenith Six”, ha suonato poi con la Delta Jazzmen di Mike Daniels, con Alan Elsdon e con Alex Welch nel 1964, con il quale dimostra di essere un clarinettista appassionato, un impetuoso altista ed un baritonista di classe. Ha raggiunto la notorietà, forma un gruppo con Ray Williams nel quale riesce a suonare con molta abilità il repertorio di Gerry Mulligan. Nel 1979 è con Humphrey Lyttelton e Keith Nichols.

Cantane pieno di swing, che nella sua carriera si è diviso tra il jazz ed il pop. A dodici anni ha iniziato a lavorare come cantante e ballerino di tap dance. Ha partecipato a diversi show teatrali, tra i quali i famosi “Running Will”, “Shuffle Along”e alle “Zigfeld Follies”. E’ stato coinvolto in un incidente stradale, nel quale ha riportato gravi fratture alle gambe che non gli hanno consentito più di ballare, quindi ha proseguito la carriera solo come cantante. Ha continuato ad esibirsi nei club, in teatro ed ha registrato dischi per la Atlantic. Ha diretto anche un suo quartetto del quale fa parte il trombettista Buck Clayton.

Fratello minore di Emile, ha iniziato a lavorare con Lawrence Marrero e la sua Young Texedo Orchestra nel 1920, è stato poi con la Original Tuxedo Orchestra di Oscar Celestin, vi è rimasto sino al 1928 anno nel quale passa con i Dixie Syncopators di Joe Oliver con i quali registra al sax alto. Nel 1929 ha inciso con Jelly Roll Morton e nel 1935 ha lavorato in vari club con Steve Lewis, con Elmer Talbert, con Kid Howard. Finita la guerra nel 1944 è tornato con Oscar Celestin, è andato poi con Paul Barbarin, con Charlie Love e con Kid Thomas. Nel 1960 si è trasferito in California dove ha lavorato con Johnny St. Cyr e Kid Ory. E’ rientrato nella sua New Orleans dove spesso si esibisce alla Preservation Hall.

Nel 1938 ha guidato una popolarissima orchestra di 16 elementi con la quale ha suonato al Savoy Ballroom di Chicago. Ha registrato diversi dischi. E’ morto nell’incendio del Rhythm Club di Natches.
