BAKER CHET CHESNEY (TP-VC)
Yale, Oklahoma. 23/12/1929. – Amsterdam, Olanda. 13/5/88.
Nel 1940 si è trasferito in California con la famiglia e qui ha studiato teoria e armonia al El Camino College di Los Angeles. La sua carriera è iniziata alla grande, suonando con Vido Musso, con Stan Getz e con Charlie Parker nel 1952. Subito dopo ha costituito con Gerry Mulligan un quartetto, divenuto subito molto famoso. Nel 1953 ha messo su un suo gruppo insieme a Russ Freeman, ha suonato con Dick Twardzick e Bob Zieff, in seguito ha arricchito la sua gamma espressiva rivelandosi anche un ottimo cantante. Il suono della sua tromba dal timbro delicato è sembrato a molti la reincarnazione di Bix Beiderbecke e, molto vicino a quello di Miles Davis, senz’altro il suo principale ispiratore. Ha vinto due volte il referendum della rivista Down Beat. Purtroppo la sua carriera, risentendo delle vicende legate alla droga, è stata spesso interrotta per periodi di detenzioni e processi. Ha subito un pestaggio che gli ha fatto perdere gran parte dei denti. Negli ultimi anni ha saputo reagire, ha reimparato a suonare la tromba, ha ritrovato coraggio ed è tornato ad essere quel poeta della tromba e del canto. E’ morto drammaticamente. Il regista Bruce Weber ha fatto in suo omaggio un film documento dal titolo ”Let’s get lost”. Durante la sua carriera ha inciso con moltissimi musicisti tra i quali: Phil Urso, Art Pepper, Bud Shank, Lee Konitz, Johnny Griffin, Al Haig, Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Herbie Mann, Pepper Adams, Bill Evans, Kenny Burrell. Musicista in possesso di doti melodiche infinite, dalla grande facilità di improvvisazione, egli ha sempre bandito le banalità ed il ricorso agli effetti inutili. La voce profonda della sua tromba pervasa di tristezza, dalla sonorità delicata e pastosa, priva di vibrato, sembra sgorgare dal suo animo intristito dalle vicissitudini patite. Cantante che come egli stesso afferma canta come suona: sono un suonatore di tromba che canta o un cantante che suona la tromba. Egli nel cantare si appoggia sulle note pensate per l’assolo, fatta di anticipi e stop ed una sfumatura evanescente intorno alla melodia. Dalla voce delicata sino alla rottura ed in questo il suo modello è Billie Holiday, pensando le note di testa con il cuore.

Ha studiato con Jay Jay Johnson, con Janos Starker e con George Russell. Ha collaborato con i suoi concittadini Wes Montgomery e Slide Hampton, in seguito con Buddy Johnson, con Stan Kenton nel 1956, con Maynard Ferguson nel 1957, con Lionel Hampton, con Quincy Jones nel 1961 e con George Russell nel 1962 al violoncello. Nell’ultimo decennio è diventato un notevole insegnante e teorico, autore di numerosi testi e trascrizioni per la sezione jazz dell’Università dell’Indiana. Musicista di alto livello, ha dato collaborazioni validissime a molti musicisti in particolar modo a Russell, ha rivelato una brillante tecnica sia col trombone che con il violoncello.

Ha studiato prima al Whittier College e si è laureata nel 1929 alla California University di Los Angeles. Nel 1930 ha sposato il poeta Harold Baker. Ha scritto nel 1938 il romanzo ”A Young A Man With A Horn”, dal quale è stato tratto un film apparso sui nostri schermi con il titolo di “Chimere”, che trattava in modo libero e fantasioso la vita di Bix Beiderbecke (sotto uno pseudonimo). Libro e film che hanno ottenuto un grande successo.

Violinista classico sino al 1962, ha imparato da solo a suonare la chitarra acustica. Dal 1976 al 1979 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Eugene Chadbourne, ha suonato anche in duo con diversi chitarristi. Strumentista che è più conosciuto per le sue esibizioni solitarie di musica etnica e tradizionale, irlandese, scozzese e americana, oltre a musica gospel, blues e ragtime, tutte eseguite con un suo stile molto particolare.

Musicista originario del Mississippi, è arrivato a Chicago in tenera età. E’ maturato nei club della Windy City avendo come mentore Byther Smith. Egli ha fatto parte di quella moltitudine delle voci soul blues la cui carriera è stata documentata tra gli anni ’60 e ’70 in una serie di 45°giri. Si è trasferito a Los Angeles nel 1980 e qui ha fatto parte di cori ecclesiastici. Nella metà degli anni ’90 è tornato sui palcoscenici profani ed è qui che è diventato “Re Ernesto” appellativo che gli è stato dato per la sua riconosciuta bravura di ballerino e cantante. Cantante estroverso e grintoso, ma molto poco personale. Voce dallo shouting fiero e fremente, dagli alti incandescenti e dai medi corposi.

Nel ’81 è tornato alla chitarra e ha organizzato un suo gruppo con il quale ha inciso diversi album. Ha insegnato anche al Conservatorio di Birmingham.

Batterista inglese, soprannominato “Ginger”, per i suoi capelli rossi. E’ diventato famoso negli anni ’60 con il gruppo dei Cream. Si è messo in luce nel nascente movimento del jazz rock, che poi è diventato fusion. E’ stato per diversi anni in Nigeria, dove ha approfondito lo studio delle percussioni africane. Senz’altro il miglior percussionista inglese di tutti i tempi.

Ha studiato pianoforte e composizione privatamente e alla University of Illinois di Urbana. Ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte in piccoli gruppi di jazz d’avanguardia. Ha iniziato ad esibirsi alle tastiere, dove ha mostrato una tecnica eccellente. Ha collaborato con Harold Jones, poi con il gruppo Tremulis. In seguito si è impegnato nella libera improvvisazione, ha collaborato con molti gruppi, tra i quali quelli di Bill Barnes e di Steve Hunt. Negli anni ’90 ha suonato con Fred Anderson, con Guillermo Gregorio, con Ken Vandermark e molti altri. Musicista dalla spiccata sensibilità melodica, dalla vivida inventiva e dalla rapidità di esecuzione.
