Gerry Mulligan ha rappresentato la leggenda del sax baritono nel jazz. Egli ha iniziato all’epoca delle big band, è passato per il cool jazz, fino agli esperimenti del progressive. E’ stato uno dei fondatori del jazz bianco. Ha trascorso la giovinezza a Filadelfia dove ha studiato pianoforte e si è fatto notare nell’ambiente dei musicisti per gli arrangiamenti scritti per l’orchestra di Johnny Warrington nel 1944. Si è trasferito a New York dove ha firmato arrangiamenti per Elliott Lawrence, Claude Thornhill ed è diventato l’arrangiatore di fiducia di Gene Krupa, con il quale ha avuto anche una parte importante nella sezione delle ancie. Con l’orchestra di Krupa ha inciso la sua prima composizione ”Disc Jockey Jump”. Alla fine del 1948 con Gil Evans ha partecipato alle celebri incisioni per la Capitol realizzate sotto il nome di Miles Davis, tra i brani registrati vi sono due sue composizioni: Jeru e Venus De Milo, che interpretate dal Mulligan sassofonista lo portarono alla ribalta anche come uno dei migliori solisti di sax baritono, oltre che ottimo arrangiatore. Questa in pratica è stata la nascita del cool jazz. Ha lavorato per Stan Kenton, dalla sua penna sono nati brani che sono diventati famosi. Nel 1952 si è trasferito a Los Angeles, dove ha messo su un quartetto insieme a Chet Baker, che ha ottenuto un grande successo, sia per l’atmosfera particolare che sapeva creare, sia per la mancanza del pianoforte, sostituito nel gruppo da un dialogo polifonico ed un lirismo rilassato. Nel quartetto la sonorità del suo baritono è simile a quella del tenore di Getz, mentre riteniamo per Baker sia valido lo stesso discorso nei confronti di Davis, ottimi anche Carson Smith, Chico Hamilton. In seguito ha diretto un altro tentette e vari altri gruppi ai quali si è aggiunta la voce di Lee Konitz. Altro gruppo messo su nel 1954 con Bob Brookmeyer, Red Mitchell e Frank Isola. Nel 1956 il sestetto con Zoot Sims e Jon Eaderley e nel 1956 un ritorno al quartetto prima con Chet Baker stesso e poi con Art Farmer. Nel 1960 la Concert Band dove poteva meglio mettere a frutto le sue qualità di arrangiatore. Ha suonato anche il sax soprano e si è dedicato maggiormente all’attività di compositore anche di musica sinfonica e da camera. Nel corso della sua carriera ha collaborato con Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Kai Winding, George Wallington, Chubby Jackson, Brew Moore, Billie Holiday, Thelenious Monk, Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, Paul Desmond, Kay Winding, Charles Mingus, Astor Piazzolla, Tommy Flanagan, Johnny Hodges, Scott Hamilton. Ha lavorato con orchestre universitarie: la “Jersey City Band”, la “Glassboro State Band” ed ha preso parte anche come attore a diversi film. Musicista che privilegia molto gli effetti del contrappunto evidenziato nei dialoghi con Chet Baker, Bob Brookmeyer e Paul Desmond. E’ stato il primo suonatore di sax baritono ha liberare questo strumento dalla sua funzione originale che si identificava in Harry Carney, per farlo diventare uno strumento solista vero e proprio, con le sue interpretazioni agili e le linee armoniche leggere ed ariose. Arrangiatore importantissimo, abilissimo, raffinato, dallo swing leggero, dalle originali soluzioni timbriche scaturite dal dialogo della parte dolce delle ance e quelle aspre degli ottoni. Nel gennaio del 1994 è stato eletto tra gli immortali del jazz dal Down Beat nella sua Hall Of Fame. Dal 1974 è stato di casa in Italia, avendo comprato casa a Milano e sposando una italiana Franca Rota, oltre a collaborare con musicisti italiani. Dopo la sua morte la sua villa di Darien è divenuta sede della Gerry & Franca Mulligan Foundation, dove si stà riordinando tutta l’opera di Mulligan in collaborazione con la Biblioteca del Congresso.

E’ stato definito il “Re Del Ravers” (ravers inteso come delirio) una musica vitale, festosa. Abile tecnicamente anche se la sua musica è stata criticata da George Melly nel suo libro “Owning up”. Uomo pieno di fascino e di humor anche se un po’ osceno. Ha seguito come modello Louis Armostrong e la sua musica ha oscurato quella prodotta dal già famoso Alex Welsh. Coadiuvato dal clarinettista Ian Christie e da Frank Parr, Betty Smith e Denny Wright, ha suonato un repertotio non tradizionale interpretato in modo divertente. Ha avuto successo per 15 anni sino al 1962, quando ha deciso di impegnarsi in affari più lucrosi.

Ha debuttato nel 1992 con Illinois Jacquet, con il quale ha preso parte al programma televisivo “Like It Is”.In seguito ha fatto parte della big band di Duffy Jackson e Roy Hargrove, della Mingus Dinasty e della Lincon Center Orchestra. Nel 1995 ha preso parte al programma della PBS Television, “Jazz Ahead”di Betty Carter. Ha collaborato con Louis Hayes e con Cecil Brooks III nella “Organ Band” al Mellon Jazz Festival di Pitsburg nel 1999.

Musicista autodidatta che ha esordito nel marzo del 1955 con la “Phoenix Jazz Band”diretta da Trevor Williams. Nel 1959 ha fatto parte della “Jump Band “di Bruce Turner, conn il quale ha anche registrato sino al 1961. In seguito ha lavorato freelance con John Cox, con la New Jazz Orchestra dal 1964 al 1968, con Graham Collier dal 1967 al 1969 e nel 1970 con John Williams. Durante lo stesso periodo ha suonato il basso elettrico in gruppi con i quali ha suonato nei locali ed accompagnato dei cantanti popolari, in Europa ed in USA. Nel 1975 ha suonato e registrato con Bob Walis a Zurigo, dove ha anche abitato dal 1980 al 1984.

Nella sua famiglia sono quasi tutti musicisti e già nel 1944 egli ha preso parte agli spettacoli organizzati dai fratelli per le truppe alleate, come ballerino di tip tap. Nel 1952 ha iniziato a suonare la batteria, ha suonato con Romano Mussolini, con Nunzio Rotondo, Cicci Santucci e Enzo Scoppa. Nel 1961 si è trasferito a Roma e nel 1964 ha suonato con Gato Barbieri, nel 1965 ha lavorato alla radio con Rotondo, con Piero Umiliani, ha partecipato al Festival di Bologna accompagnando Annie Ross. Ha suonato con Delgato Aparicio, con Sal Nistico, con Dusko Gojkovic, con Milton Jackson. Nel 1967 con la Swingin’Dance Band di Marcello Rosa, ha fatto tournée con Lee Konitz, con Martial Solal, con Mary Lou Williams nel 1969, ha accompagnato Jon Hendricks, Barney Kessel con il quale ha inciso due dischi ed ha fatto parte della “New Dixieland Sound” di Marcello Rosa. Nel 1972 ha collaborato con Basso/Valdambrini, nel 1974 con Hugo Heredia. Ha svolto attività freelance suonando in molti club insieme a Franco Ambrosetti, Dizzy Reece, Johnny Griffin, Dexter Gordon Art Farmer, Chet Baker. Ha inciso anche con Conte Candoli, con Frank Rosolino ed in seguito lavora negli “Jazz Maker” di Enzo Scoppa.
MUNDY JIMMY, JAMES. (ST-ARR)
Cincinnati, Ohio. 28/6/1907. -New York. 24/4/1983.
Polistrumentista, ha impara presto a suonare diversi strumenti optando poi per il sax tenore. Si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha suonato con Carroll Dickerson, poi con Erskine Tate nel 1925, ha suonato e scritto arrangiamenti per Claude Hopkins e Earl Hines nel 1929. Nel 1938 è entrato nell’orchestra di Benny Goodman del quale divenne il principale arrangiatore e ha raggiunto il suo maggiore successo. Ha lavorato in questa veste anche per Count Basie, salvo per una parentesi di un anno quando a New York ha messo su una sua orchestra. Ha continuato a lavorare come arrangiatore ed a interessarsi anche di colonne musicali per dei films. E’ stato indicato come uno dei più grandi arrangiatori della storia del Jazz.

Dopo aver studiato all’Athenaem Scholl of Music è andato a Londra, dove ha lavorato con l’orchestra di Jack Hilton, come pianista e arrangiatore, con lui è rimasto sino al 1936 e ha registrato molti dischi. Durante gli anni ’30 ha registrato con Spike Huges, con Benny Carter, ha suonato con Sydney Lipton e ha accompagnato Louis Armstrong e Coleman Hawkins in Inghilterra e Vingy Manone negli Stati Uniti dal 1935 al 1939. In seguito ha fatto una tournée con Stephane Grappelli, ha registrato con George Chilsom nel 1944, con i gruppi “Orchid Room”, i “Mayfair”ed ha diretto l’orchestra di Maurice Winnick al “Ciro’s” di Londra dal 1948 al 1949 e quella dell’Imperial Hotel, di Torquay dal novembre 1949 al 1979. Insieme a Mark White e Harry Parry ha condotto il programma radio della BBC, “Jazz Club”, del quale per un certo periodo è stato il direttore.
MUNRO CHARLIE, CHARLES ROBERT. (SAX)
Christchurch, Nuova Zelanda. 22/5/1917. – Sidney, Australia. 9/12/1985.
Ha iniziato la professione a 17 anni. Si è trasferito a Sidney dove è entrato nell’orchestra di Myer Norman e Wally Parks. Ha suonato nei club con altri gruppi. In seguito ha suonato con Wally Norman al “Roosevelt Club”di Sidney. Nel 1950 ha suonato con Bob Gibson e ha studiato il violoncello. Dal 1954 al 1967 ha fatto parte dell’Australian Broadcasting Commission, con il compito di arrangiatore, compositore e dirigere workshop sperimentali spesso insieme a Bryce Rohde, combinando free a jazz modale. Ha diretto anche un suo gruppo con il quale ha accompagnato la cantante Georgina de Leon.
MURAKANI HIROSHI. (DR)
Tokyo, Giappone. 14/3/1948.
Ha iniziato a suonare la batteria a 15 anni e ha esordito professionalmente con il trio di Takeiro Honda nel 1967. ha suonato poi con Masabumi Kikushi dal 1969 al 1972, con Sadao Watanabe dal 1972 al 1975, con il Kosuke Mine and Honda, con il “Native Son” e ha diretto “Honda and Mine” dal 1978 al 1981. Ha lavorato ad intervalli in USA ed in Giappone. Ha lavorato con un suo gruppo, con il gruppo diretto dal sassofonista Hidefumi Toki nel 1996 e con il trio di Manabu Oishi nel1997.
MURAKAMI SHUICI, PONTA. (DR)
Nishinomiya, Giappone. 1/1/1951.
Ha iniziato a studiare il corno francese a dodici anni e a 16 i timpani e le percussioni classiche ed in seguito la batteria. Ha esordito nel 1972 con il gruppo di Sadao Watanabe, poi ha suonato con Yosuke Yamashita, Kazumi Watanabe, Akira Sakata e Takashi Kako ed altri. Nel 1988 ha formato una sua orchestra, la “Ponta Box”con la quale ha partecipato al Montreux Jazz Festival del 1995. Ha continuato ad essere attivo negli studi di registrazione e ha accompagnato dei noti cantanti pop giapponesi.
MURANYI JOE, JOSEPH PAUL. (CL-SS-ST-VC)
Martins Ferry, Ohio. 14/1/1928.
Ha suonato il clarinetto per tre anni nella banda aeronautica militare dal 1946 al 1949. Si è iscritto alla Manhattan School of Music con l’intento di fare il musicista sinfonico. Dopo aver completato gli studi si è laureato alla Columbia University e durante lo stesso periodo ha studiato con Sanford Gold, Lennie Tristano, Bill Russo e con ottimi maestri classici di clarinetto. Ha lavorato a New York con gruppi di dixieland guidati da Jimmy McPartland, Yank Lawson, Max Kaminsky, Henry”Red”Allen, Eddie Condon e ha guidato egli stesso i “Gutbucket Six”, Durante gli anni ’50 ha suonato e registrato per diverse case editrici e ha redatto anche le note sulle copertine degli album. Ha fatto un tour con Bobby Hackett e Vic Dickenson, nel 1963 ha diretto i “Village Stompers” con i quali ha girato gli USA ed il Giappone. Dal 1967 al 1971 ha fatto parte degli All Stars di Louis Armstrong. Lasciato Armstrong e tornato a New York ha registrato con Roy Eldridge, ha diretto un gruppo al “Jimmy Ryan’s” e nel 1975 è entrato nella World’s Greatest Jazz Band. Nel 1977 ha registrato con Cozy Cole e Lionel Hampton, è stato membro del gruppo cooperativo “Classic Jazz Quartet”insieme a Dick Sudhalter, Dick Wellstood e Marty Grotz dal 1984 al 1987. Nel 1992 ha guidato dei gruppi al “Thursday”, al “Cajun Restaurant” di New York e ha collaborato con i “Jimmy Ryan’s All Stars”. Ha registrato con il “Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble” e freelance ha lavorato con Doc Cheatham, Ruby Braff, Peter Ecklund, Vince Giordano, Barrett Deems, Loren Schoenberg e Bob Barnard. Ha girato il mondo con i gruppi di Keith Smith, Jack Parnell, Roy Williams, la Barelhouse Jazzband, Bent Person e la Irakli. Nel 1996 con il nome di MNM trio ha registrato con Eli Newberg e Jimmy Mazzi. Musicista che ha avuto un rapporto privilegiato con l’Ungheria, apparendo spesso alla televisione e registrando con la “Bohem Ragtime Jazz Band”nel 1992 e con la “Orient Dixieland Jazz Band” nel 1995. Musicista molto legato e devoto a Louis Armstrong, ha raccolto molto suo materiale in un grande archivio.

Shizuoka, Giappone. 25/7/1963.
Ha iniziato a studiare il trombone a 13 anni e ha suonato già durante gli anni di scuola. Nel 1985 ha formato un quartetto e poi ha suonato con il gruppo di Sadao Watanabe. Ha anche fatto parte della più conosciuta orchestra di musica latina, la “Orquesta de la Lus”. Ha composto musica per il cinema, la televisione ed il teatro, ha lavorato come arrangiatore per le più famose orchestre pop giapponesi. Nel 1990 ha guidato il gruppo “Solid Brass”e nel 1993 una sua orchestra.
MURLEY MIKE, MICHAEL DAVID. (ST-SS)
Windsor, Nuova Scozia, Canada. 12/12/1961.
Ha avuto diversi insegnanti, Don Palmer ad Halifax, Pat LaBarbera a Toronto, Dave Liebman a Banff di Alberta, il Centro for the Arts Jazz Workshop a New York. Nel 1981 si è trasferito a Toronto ed è diventato il musicista leader della sua generazione in Canada. Ha fatto parte dei gruppi, “Shuffle Demons” dal 1984 al 1989, dei “Time Warp”, del quintetto di Barry Elmes e dei “Metalwood” nel 1996. Ha registrato con un suo gruppo, con la “Maritime Jazz Orchestra”, la “Neufeld-Occhipinti Jazz Orchestra” ed altri. Dal 1986 ha diretto un suo quartetto, con il quale ha girato tutto il Canada.
MURPHY ALLEN, THOMAS. (DR-VC)
Atlanta, Georgia. 13/6/1938.
E’ cresciuto insieme a Marion Brown e Sirone e ha cantato da ragazzo in un gruppo vocale che accompagna Little Richard. Dopo aver studiato percussioni e a 18 anni ha fatto un tour con l’organista Cleveland Lyon. Ha accompagnato molti ottimi musicisti ed è stato membro dell’orchestra “Royal Peacock”di Atlanta e direttore musicale della Hunter Records. Ha suonato con Jesse Powell, ha fatto un tour con il gruppo vocale i “Drifters”e dopo aver suonato a New York è tornato ad Atlanta per suonare con Duke Pearson. Ha lavorato spesso nei club, ha accompagnato Dakota Stanton, ha suonato con i “Peachtree Strutters”e con il cantante Freddie Cole. Insieme al bassista Laymon Jackson ha fatto parte per quasi trenta anni del trio del pianista Paul Mitchell. In seguito qualche sortita a New York ma ha continuato a vivere stabilmente ad Atlanta.
MURPHY DICK. (TP)
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. 13/5/1930.
Ha debuttato con l’orchestra di Roy Stevens nel 1948 e nella stesso anno è andato con Jimmy Dorsey. Nel 1950 durante il servizio militare è venuto in Austria dove ha suonato con piccoli gruppi di militari. Nel 1953 congedato è rimasto a Vienna dove ha iniziato a lavorare nei club. Ha suonato con Hans Koller nel 1954, con la “Austrian All Stars”, nel 1955 con la Fehring Orchestra, con Fredirch Gulda nel 1961, con la “Heinz Neubrand-Viktor Plasil Big Band” nel 1967. Nel 1970 è tornato negli States, dove ha suonato con Shorty Rogers e con Chet Baker.
MURPHY LYLE “SPUD”. (ARR)
Berlino, New England. 19/8/1908. – Los Angeles, California. 2005.
Ha iniziato ha suonare il clarinetto e poi la tromba in orchestre da ballo nel 1927. Ha suonato con Slim Lamar, nel 1930 con Austin Wylie, con Jan Garber, nel 1933 con Mal Hallett, nel 1934 con Joe Haymes. Ma egli è portato naturalmente a scrivere arrangiamenti e la sua carriera di arrangiatore inizia con l’orchestra di Benny Goodman, dal 1935 al 1937. Ha scritto anche per Glen Gray, per Tommy Dorsey. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale ha servito nella marina mercantile e finita la guerra è andato a Hollywood dove ha lavorato per il cinema. Si è trasferito sulla West Coast dove ha esperimentato un particolare e personalissimo metodo dodecafonico perfezionandolo in varie composizioni e arrangiamenti. Ha svolto anche il ruolo di insegnante. Chiamato anche “Spud”.

Cresciuto a Fulton, New York, ha studiato sin da piccolo il pianoforte, canto e recitazione. Ha iniziato a suonare nel gruppo del fratello Earl. Nel 1952 ha lavorato in Canada come pianista e cantante. Tornato negli States si è stabilito in California, dove ha lavorato nei club e negli show televisivi di Steve Allen. Nel 1964 è venuto in Europa per una tournée e vi è rimasto dieci anni. Tornato a New York ha ripreso la carriera di sideman, ha collaborato con Sonny Rollins nel 1978 durante un concerto al Buffalo State College. Ha registrato con la collaborazione di Richie Cole, poi con Sheila Jordan, Art Farmer, con Jeff Hamilton nel 1982, con Herb Geller nel 1975. Cantante mainstream dallo stile moderno, pieno di swing. Dalla notevole sensibilità. Dalla voce baritonale robusta ma raffinata, il suo repertorio spazia dal blues al vocalese. Cantante tra i vecchi che cerca continuamente di aggiornarsi e di trovare soluzioni nuove.

Quindi nel 1938 è arrivata al “Famous Door” di New York e dopo è andata a Los Angeles per partecipare ad un importante Jubillee show, l’ARFS ed ha preso parte al film “George White’s Scandals of 1945”. E’ tornata a New York per esibirsi al Cafè Society e è diventata la prima donna nel music hall ed ha effettuato molte tournée di successo anche in Europa ed Australia. In seguito si è impegnata più come cantante, con un forte legame con il jazz. Il suo bassista fisso dal 1948 al 1951 è stato Major Holley. Ha fatto una tournée in Inghilterra nel 1950, nel 1957 in duo con Slam Stewart, ha preso parte nel 1974 al Newport Jazz Festival New York e alla Grande Parade du Jazz di Nizza in Francia nel 1980, al Ronnie’s Scott di Londra nel 1981 ed alla Carnegie Hall di New York nel luglio 1981. Pianista, cantante che ricorda molto Fats Waller sia nel modo di suonare il pianoforte che per la vena umoristica di cantante. Soprannominata “Chee Chee Girl”.

Ha studiato organo al Peabody Conservatory di Baltimore e alla Johns Hopkins University, dove si è laureato nel 1985. Ha iniziato a lavorare nel 1982 accompagnando la cantante Ethel Ennis, poi ha suonato con Curtis Fuller nel 1985, con Charlie Rouse nel 1986. Ha fatto parte del gruppo fusion di Gary Thomas, del gruppo cooperativo “Rhumba Club”. Dal 1985 ha fatto anche il riparatore di organi a canna e ha insegnato pianoforte e teoria musicale.

Ha iniziato la carriera musicale lavorando in piccole orchestrine locali come quella di Merle Howard. In seguito ha suonato con Bob Helm, Val Bender, Will Osborne, Mall Hallett ed è diventato uno dei membri più importanti della Yerba Buena Jazz Band di San Francisco a partire dal 1939. Nella stessa si è impegnato anche come arrangiatore. Ha lasciato il gruppo nel 1949 per mettere su un suo gruppo Dixieland che ha operato con successo specialmente in California. Durante la sua carriera ha suonato anche con Joe Marsala. E’ stato quello che ha voluto riportare il dixieland a San Francisco, dove operava prevalentemente al “Earlquake McGoon’s Club” di cui era proprietario.

E’ cresciuto a Mobile in Alabama e ha studiato al Tuskegee Institute, dove si è diplomato nel 1939 e si è laureato in letteratura alla New York University nel 1948. Ha fatto parte della Tuskegee Airmein durante la seconda guerra mondiale ed è rimasto in aviazione sino al 1962. Dal 1970 ha iniziato la carriera di scrittore, pubblicando il libro “The Omni-Americans” una analisi delle relazioni razziali nella cultura americana, nel 1976 “Stomping The Blues” una esplorazione significativa del jazz e del blues. Durante il rapporto di amicizia con Count Basie è scaturita una sua biografia “Good Morning Blues”. Ha pubblicato altri libri ed è stato l’artefice maggiore della nascita del Jazz at Lincoln Center.
