RILEY HOWARD, JOHN (P)
Huddersfield,Yorkshire, Gran Bretagna. 16/2/1943.
Ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte a sei anni e a 13 si è interessato di jazz. Dal 1961 ha studiato alla University of Wales, nel 1966 alla Indiana University, dove è stato il pupillo di David Baker e, nel 1967, alla York University in Inghilterra. Stabilitosi a Londra ha organizzato un suo trio con il bassista Barry Guy ed il batterista John Hiseman. In seguito si avvarrà del batterista Alan Jackson e poi Tony Oxley. Nel 1969 ha fatto parte del primo gruppo di jazz a partecipare al “Henry Wood Promenade Concert”. Ha collaborato con Evan Parker, in duo con John McLaughlin, poi nella London Jazz Composers Orchestra, fondata dal suo amico Barry Guy. Dal 1972 al 1981 con il gruppo di Tony Oxley, con Phil Waschsman, con Trevor Watts, John Stevens, con Keith Tippett, con Jaki Byard nel 1984, con Elton Dean e in trio con Jeff Clyne e Tony Levin. Nel 1988 ha fondato un altro trio con Mario Castronari e Tony Marsh. Nel 1990 ha collaborato con George Haslam e ha codiretto il quartetto Art Themen nel 1996. Ha insegnato a Londra alla Guidhall School of Music and Drama, al Goldsmiths’ College, alla Barry Summer School ed in alter scuole di musica. E’ stato un socio attivo del center of The Creative and Performing Arts di Buffalo, New York e ha scritto anche su riviste specializzate. Si è interessato anche di musica classica contemporanea.

John Riley ha iniziato a suonare la batteria all’età di otto anni dopo avere ricevuto un rullante in regalo. Ha studiato con Tom Sicola. All’età di dodici anni ha inizia a lavorare in gruppi rock con suoi coetanei. Ha ascoltato i primi dischi di jazz, la colonna sonora del film The Gene Krupa Story e “Conversation” di Max Roach. Nel 1971 ha inizia a studiare con Joe Morello e successivamente ha studiato percussioni presso la University of North Texas e ha conseguito un Master of Music in jazz presso la Manhattan School of Music. Ha avuto anche modo di suonare nella One O’clock Lab Band. Trasferitosi a New York nel 1976, viene presto chiamato a far parte della Woody Herman Big Band e conclusa questa esperienza ha iniziato una intensa attività che lo porterà a collaborare con numerosi musicisti, con Marc Johnson, Toots Thielemans, Joe Lovano, ha fatto un tour con il compositore e pianista Marvin Hamlisch dal 1981 al 1983. Ha collaborato con Stan Getz, John Abecombrie, Michel Legrand, Milt Jackson, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, John Scofield, nella grande orchestra di Bob Mintzer, con Gary Peacock dal 1991 al 1995, Mike Stern, Red Rodney, la Mingus Big Band nel 1998, con George Gruntz, la Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, la Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Phil Woods, Gary Bartz, John Patitucci, Eddie Henderson, nel 1997 con Ray Brown. Come freelance ha collaborato con Bob Berg, Art farmer, Christian McBride, John Clayton e Bill Dobbins. Ha fatto inoltre parte del corpo docente del William Patterson College di Wayne, New York, della Manhattan School of Music, della New York University e del SUNY College di Purchase, nel 1995 ha insegnato Jazz and Contemporary Music alla New School for Social Research, nel 1999 alla New School University e alla Artist in Residence presso l’Amsterdam Conservatory.

Ha studiato la chitarra classica, poi è passato al clarinetto e nel 1960 ha debuttato con Ken Colyer, leader del più famoso gruppo inglese il “New Orleans Revival”. Con questo gruppo ha registrato i suoi primi dischi. Dopo un tour con la International Jazz Band con la quale ha anche registrato, ha suonato occasionalmente nel Connecticut con Henry”Red”Allen, con J.C.Higginbotham, Zutty Singleton, Sidney De Paris, Herman Autrey ed altri. Ha suonato in seguito con Barry Lid Martin con il quale si è trasferito a New Orleans e qui ha avuto modo di suonare con famosi musicisti come George Lewis, Jim Robinson, Captain John Handy, Kid Thomas, Red Allen, Wils Bill Davison, Keith Smith. A Minneapolis ha sostituito Butch Thompson nella Hall Brothers’ Band. E’ tornato in Europa nel 1967, ha suonato in Belgio con Barry Martyn, con un suo gruppo in Inghilterra e in Danimarca e nel 1971 ha fatto esperienze nel jazz-rock con il gruppo “Armada”. Nel 1973 ha suonato con George Webb, nel 1974 con i “Martyn’s Legends of Jazz”, con i Duke Burrell’s Lousiana Shakers, con Jabbo Smith e con Chris barber dal 1977 al 1979. Ha continuato per molti anni ha dirigere un suo gruppo in Europa, con sporadiche collaborazioni con i “Waso” e con i “Ginger Pig Jazzband” nel 1990. Ha collaborato con il “Colin Bowden’s New Orleans Hamfats” nel video “Bude Jazz Festival 1990” e ha fatto dei tour in Giappone e Australia. Ha partecipato inoltre a molti festival famosi. Musicista che ha senz’altro dato un importante contributo alla moderna New Orleans Music. Ottimo clarinettista dal caratteristico stile perfettamente in bilico tra la tradizione e l’interpretazione moderna di questa musica.

Polistrumentista di valore, è stato anche dal 1926 al 1930 direttore musicale della Oken, per la quale ha organizzato moltissime registrazioni alle quali spesso partecipava con effetti percussivi, infatti è presente nelle incisioni dei Blue Five di Joe Venuti, in quelle della cantante Seger Ellis, con Clarence Williams, e con Noble Sissle.

Compositore e pianista. Ha iniziato l’attività come impiegato in una casa editrice e ne è diventato poi il proprietario. In seguito ha messo su altre case editrici.

Nel 1925 costituisce un duo vocale con Bing Crosby, che nel 1926 fù assunto da Paul Whiteman. Nel 1927 con l’inserimento del pianista-cantante Harry Barris divenne il ”Three Rhythm Boys”. Fratello della cantante Mildred Bailey. Il trio ebbe anche un ingaggio nella allora famosa orchestra di Gus Arnheim. Sciolto il trio, Rinker forma altri gruppi vocali, nel 1936 lavora con Fred Waring. Nel 1937 lascia l’attività per diventare produttore per la Columbia Broadcasting System.
RIO NIDO.
Gruppo vocale di Minneapolis. Uno dei tanti gruppi nati sulla scia del successo dei Manhattan Transfer, che però rispetto ad altri sembra più vicino al jazz. Quartetto guidato da Prudence Johnson e dal chitarrista Tim Sparks, che con entusiasmo e molta immaginazione ha rivisitato vocalmente gli arrangiamenti di Benny Golson, di Slide Hampton, oltre ai vari omaggi resi a Lambert-Hendrick e Ross. Gruppo dal vocalismo abbastanza personale.

Completa gli studi classici al Conservatorio di Parigi, si interessa di musica da camera e nel 1968 si interessa di jazz. Mette su il gruppo “Zoo” complesso di jazz-rock. negli anni’70 lavora con gli “Aphrodite’s Child”, registra e va in tournée con Leo Ferré, collabora con Vangelis Papathanaslou da quale viene coinvolto nella composizione di colonne sonore.

Ha debutato negli Scranton Sirens uno dei primi gruppi di jazz bianchi. Nel 1926 entra nell’orchestra di Jean Goldkette. Partecipa alle famose registrazioni organizzate da Frank Trumbauer. Incide anche con i Scranton Sirens (1925) con i Blue Four di Joe Venuti (1928) e con Bix Beiderbecke. In seguito si era ritirato dalla professione attiva.

Ha iniziato a studiare la chitarra a otto anni e a dodici già suona negli Esquire. Ha frequentato la University of Southern California e nel 1969 ha studiato con Joe Pass e Howard Roberts chitarra jazz e con Christopher Parkening quella classica. Ha debuttato professionalmente con Sergio Mendes, con il quale ha fatto una tournée in Giappone nel 1973. In seguito è stato molto richiesto nei club di Los Angeles per il suo modo tranquillo di suonare. Nel 1977 ha registrato in Giappone con Sadao Watanabe, ha diretto un gruppo di jazz-funk e per diverso tempo ha guidato il gruppo “Friendship. Negli anni ’80 si è concentrato sulla musica brasiliana. Ha fatto parte del quartetto Fourplay, poi ha collaborato con Bob James, con Harvey Mason e con Larry Carlton. Ha registrato anche con Herbie Hancock, Gato Barbieri, Peggy Lee, Oliver Nelson. Il più vivace chitarrista della scena odierna della fusion di Los Angeles. Nella sua musica tiene a sottolineare la sua tendenza al blues.

Gruppo vocali, arrivato al successo negli anni’90. Composto da Bob Stoloff, Rebecca Hardiman, Sharon Harris e Daryl Bosteels. Nella loro musica non vi è solo rigore e schiettezza nella tradizione del “barbershop quartet” cioè quell’armonizzare a quattro voci di cui i primi maestri sono stati i Mills Brothers, ma anche una esecuzione vocale-strumentale di carattere orchestrale legata alla tradizione, senza eccessivi ricorsi allo scat o al vocalese. Le loro interpretazioni sono di stretta pertinenza jazzistica. Quindi un gruppo vocale dalla eccezionale bravura, pieno di autentico swing.

Nel 1939 si è trasferito a Boston dove ha studiato al locale conservatorio. Il suo primo ingaggio importante l’ha ottenuto con Hot Lips Page. Nel 1943 ha messo su un suo trio e dal 1945 sino al 1952 ha lavorato con Cab Calloway. Ha inciso anche con Jonah Jones e con Ike Quebes nel 1945.
RIVERA MARIO. (ST-FL)
Santo Domingo, Repubblica Dominicana. 22/7/1939.
Prima di trasferirsi a New York nel 1960 ha lavorato in gruppi locali di merengue. A New York è entrato nell’orchestra di Tito Rodriguez, con il quale ha suonato dal 1963 al 1965 e ha anche collaborato con Machito e con Eddie Palmieri. Ha avuto una lunga collaborazione con Tito Puente, è rimasto con lui sino alla sua morte nel 2000 e sia nel Latin Jazz Ensemble che nel Golden Men Of Jazz ha suonato il sax tenore ed il flauto. Ha anche suonato con il gruppo di George Coleman, con il quale ha registrato nel 1977 ed ha partecipato al Luganio Jazz Festival nel 1980. ha anche registrato con Junior Cook, con Jerry Gonzales e nel 1988 ha fatto parte della United Nation Orchestra di Dizzy Gillespie ed è rimasto con la stessa sotto la direzione di Paquito D’Rivera. Nel 1993 ha collaborato con Slide Hampton, poi con Chico O’Farrill, ha registrato con Papo Vasquez, con Dave Valentin, con gli Afro-Blue Impressions, con Arthur Barron ed altri gruppi di musica latina. Il suo modello iniziale è stato John Coltrane ed in seguito Sonny Rollins. Solista valido sia al sax tenore, che al sax soprano, al baritono, al piccolo, al sax alto, al flauto ed al clarinetto basso.

Ha studiato musica sotto la guida della madre, in seguito ha seguito delle lezioni private. Ha iniziato a suonare in gruppi che fanno musica latino americana. Si interessa di jazz ed ha finito per dedicarsi completamente a questa musica. Molte sono state le sue collaborazioni: con Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Ben Webster, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Duke Jordan, Lou Donaldson, Cannonball Adderley, Thad Jones, Billy Eckstein, Ella Fitzgerald. Nel 1952 è entrato nei Jazz Messengers, nel 1956 ha fatto parte del “Les Modes Quintet”, ha collaborato poi con Jimmy McPartland. Dal 1964 al 1968 ha lavorato con Hazel Scott, con Quincy Jones, con Kenny Burrell, Charlie Shavers e con Billy Taylor. Nel 1968 ha fatto una tournée con Junior Mance e salvo le brevi parentesi nel 1977 con Duke Ellington e con Milton Jackson, ha continuato a collaborare con Mance. Ha inciso anche con Frank Brown, con Willie Bobo e con Alvin Queen nel 1982.

Banda nata a Pavia nel 1976. Composta da Paolo Gaiotti (tp-vc) Duccio Castelli (tb) Alfredo Ferrario (cl) Carlo Marchesi (p) Nanna Freddi (bj) Paolo Cagnozzi (b) Achille Legnazzi (dr) Il gruppo propone una rivisitazione del jazz arcaico, eseguito con perizia. Il leader del gruppo è Gaiotti che nella vita fa l’ingegnere.

RIVERS BEATRICE.

Moglie del polistrumentista Sam River, con lui ha fondato nel 1971 lo Studio Rivbea. Di questo luogo Beatrice è stata l’anima, sino a farlo diventare per lunghi anni luogo nel quale moltissimi e importanti musicisti hanno potuto sperimentare ed apportare innovazioni di rilievo nel panorama del jazz degli ultimi cinquanta anni.
RIVERS MAVIS ( VC)
Apia, Upolu, Samoa. 10/5/1929. – 05/1992.
Originaria delle Isole Samoa, residente in California. Cantante originale per le sue caratteristiche interpretazioni sempre pervase di poesia. Nella metà degli anni ’50 ha lavorato sotto la direzione del brillante arrangiatore e direttore Nelson Riddle ed inoltre nei gruppi di Shorty Rogers. Voce dal timbro molto vicino a quello della Fitzgerald, però con meno impegno, con una sfumatura di lirismo vicino alla Sylvia Syms ed alle volte aspra e ruvida come quella di Frances Faye. Ha registrato nel 1983 con un gruppo diretto dal figlio Matt Catingub. Nel 1991 con il chitarrista Mark Kahia ha registrato per il mercato neozelandese una versione di “How High The Moon” molto somigliante a quello inciso molti anni addietro dalla coppia Les Paul e Mary Ford, anche grazie ad un trucco tecnico di sovrapposizione di voci.

Ha debuttato alla fine degli anni ’50 con il sassofonista Lee Allen ed ha anche diretto gruppi di rhythm-and-blues. Ha collaborato con Melvin Lastie, con Mel Tormè, con Jackie Wilson, con Jerry Butler, con il gruppo Impression e dal 1963 al 1966 ha diretto l’orchestra “Royal Dukes of Rhythm”. Ha lavorato spesso nei club. Multistrumentista che ha suonato con la stessa abilità tutti i tipi di sassofoni, flauti, fisarmonica, bagpipes, organo, sintetizzatore ed ha anche cantato. Musicista dalla grande abilità nell’intrattenere con il suo grande senso del blues. Influenzato da Roland Kirk, spesso ha suonato contemporaneamente due strumenti.
