VACHE ALLAN (CL)
Rahway, New Jersey. 16/12/1953.
Si è laureato nel 1971 alla Rahaway High School. Figlio del bassista Warren Vache Sr. e fratello del trombettista e flicornista Warren. Dal 1971 al 1975 ha studiato al Jersey City State College, clarinetto classico e con Kenny Davern, clarinetto jazz. Ha collaborato con Bobby Hackett, Will Bill Davison, Pee Wee Erwin, Gene Krupa, Dick Hyman, Max Kaminsky, Clark Terry, Dick Wellstood, Ed Hubble, Cliff Leeman, Bob Haggart, Jack Lesberg, Lionel Hampton, Bob Wilber e naturalmente anche con il fratello. Alla fine del 1975 ha messo insieme la “Jim Cullum Jazz Band” di San Antonio ex “Happy Jazz Band”, con la quale spesso ha lavorato alla radio ed ha fatto diverse tournée all’estero.

Figlio di Warren Vache Sr. bassista, studioso e storico di jazz. Egli ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a sei anni e a 11 la tromba ed in seguito ha scelto la cornetta ed il fricorno. Ha iniziato a suonare in piccoli gruppi di dixieland diretti dal padre e ha studiato con Pee Wee Erwin dal 1970 al 1980. Il suo primo successo lo ha ottenuto con la New York Repertori Company alla Carnegie Hall di New York nel 1975 ed il primo ingaggio importante con Benny Goodman. Ha pubblicato il suo primo album da leader nel 1976. Ha suonato poi con Eddie Condon, Vic Dickenson, Bob Wilber, spesso con Scott Hamilton, con Buddy Tate nel 1981, con Eddie Rickert nel 1983, ha accompagnato Rosemary Clooney nel 1984. Ha fatto parte della Concord Hall Stars con la quale ha girato il mondo, nella Newport All Stars di George Wein. Ha diretto anche un suo sestetto. Giovane tromba impostasi per la sua notevole carica di swing. Ancora oggi continua fedelmente ad essere la bandiera della tradizione swing e lo fa con dovizia di tecnica e massimo buon gusto.

Bassista professionista ed autore di diverse pubblicazioni sul jazz e critico in diverse riviste di jazz, tra le quali la “Jazz Jersey”. Ha gestito anche un negozio di strumenti musicali. E’ stato uno dei più importanti musicisti di jazz del New Jersey. Ha iniziato ha frequentare le jam session al Nick’s al Greenvich Village insieme a Eddie Condon e Pee Wee Russell ed altri musicisti di jazz tradizionale. Ha collaborato in seguito con Doc Cheatham e ha guidato un suo gruppo “The Syncopatin’Seven”, con i quali ha lavorato sino all’inizio degli anni ’80 e nel quale ha ospitato i suoi due figli esordienti. E’ stato uno dei fondatori della New Jazz Society Jersey.

Dal 1977 ha iniziato a studiare il contrabasso da solo. Nel 1978 ha frequentato la scuola di Musica di Milano, ha studiato con Giorgio Gaslini al Conservatorio e nel 1979 inizia la sua attività con Gaslini, partecipando alla tournée negli Stati Uniti ed in India. Ha registrato vari dischi con lui, ha anche collaborato con Gianni Cazzola e nel 1981 è entrato nel gruppo di Guido Manusardi. Ha suonato con Flavio e Franco Ambrosetti, con Massimo Urbani, Larry Nocella, Marcello e Pietro Tonolo, Fulvio Sisti e Luigi Bonafede.

Ha studiato musica al Conservatorio di Liegi e con l’aiuto di Jacques Pelzer ha ottenuto una borsa di studio per la Long Island Uninversity di New York, dove ha studiato dal 1986 al 1990 con Joe Lovano. Ha iniziato a collaborare con Butch Morris, con Michael Formanek e con Tito Puente. Tornato in Europa ha lavorato a Bruxelles, anche in gruppi d’avanguardia. Nel 1992 è stato a New York con Salvatore Bonafede, ha collaborato anche con Jeff Hirshfield. In Europa ha diretto un trio insieme Pierre Van Dormael, poi con Jean-Louis Rossinfosse. Ha insegnato presso l’Accademia di Musica di Amay.

Diplomatosi in violino al Conservatorio di Torino, ha iniziato la carriera nel campo sinfonico ed in seguito ha lavorato anche in orchestrine da ballo. Nel 1928 ha messo su i “Missourians”, ha iniziato a suonare anche il sax alto ed è entrato nell’orchestra Cetra dell’EIAR diretta prima da Tito Petralia e poi da Pippo Barsizza. In sostanza la sua vita musicale l’ha trascorsa quasi interamente in questa orchestra. Ha diretto per conto suo il “Quartetto Jazz Cetra” e “Gli Allegri Improvvisatori” con Sergio Quercioli, Gaetano Gimelli e Alberto Semprini. E’ stato il primo musicista italiano ad esprimersi in linguaggio moderno e jazzistico, con una concezione ritmica avanzata rispetto all’epoca.

Il padre Agostino è stato uno violinista jazz di grande valore. Oscar ha frequentato il conservatorio di Torino dove si è diplomato nel 1941. E’ entrato nell’orchestra della radio italiana. Nel 1949 si è trasferito a Milano, dove ha lavorato e registrato con le orchestre di Giampiero Boneschi, Piero Rizza, Beppe Mojetta, Gorni Kramer. Ha suonato con i migliori jazzmen italiani: Gianni Basso, Galuco Masetti, Franco Cerri, Attilio Donadio, Cosimo Di Ceglie. Nel 1955 ha partecipato alla nascita del “Sestetto Italiano” ed in seguito del “Quintetto Italiano”. Ha suonato con Gil Cuppini, Giorgio Gaslini, Maynard Ferguson, Duke Ellington. Durante la sua militanza nella grande orchestra della Rai ha avuto modo di suonare con Frank Rosolino, Conte Candoli, Freddie Hubbard, Ernie Wilkins ed altri. E’ stato uno dei migliori e più rappresentativi musicisti di jazz italiano.
