SUTTON RALPH (P)

Hamburg, Missouri. 4/11/1922. – Evergreen, Colorado. 30/12/2001.

Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte classico a nove anni e a undici ha fatto parte dell’orchestra da ballo diretta dal padre, un violinista. Ha studiato alla Northeast Missouri State University. Come la gran parte dei musicisti della zona di St.Louis si è accostato al Jazz con la musica ascoltata sui riverboats. Ha 19 anni ha conosciuto Jack Teagarden che lo ha voluto nel duo gruppo, e con il quale è stato solo due mesi poiché ha dovuto lasciarlo per assolvere il servizio militare. Congedatosi è entrato nel trio di Joe Schirmer a St. Louis e nel 1947 è tornato con Teagarden. In seguito ha lavorato come pianista solista al Jimmy Ryan’s al Village Vanguard ed infine è stato il pianista stabile al Club di Eddie Condon. Nel 1956 si è trasferito con la famiglia a San Francisco dove ha avuto un ingaggio allo Storyville di Bob Scobey. Ha suonato anche con Bing Crosby, Sidney Bechet, Tony Parenti, Ruby Braff. Dal 1963 si è stabilito ad Aspen nel Colorado, esibendosi al “Sunnie’s Rendevous Club” la cui proprietaria in seguito è diventata sua moglie. Nel 1968 è stato membro della prima formazione della World’s Greatest Jazz Band. Egli è stato l’ultimo rappresentante del pianismo stride, grande amico e rivale di Dick Wellstood. Pianista seguace di James P.Johnson e di Fats Waller, ma che ha cercato di rinnovare quel tipo di pianismo conservando sempre la carica dello swing. Pianista dall’attacco energico e dalla tecnica sicura.

Ha frequentato la Wesleyan University di Middletown nel Connecticut e il Berklee College of Music di Boston. Ha iniziato a cantare nei concorsi per ragazzi e incoraggiata dal padre ha iniziato ad interessarsi di jazz e ha debuttato nei club. Per molti anni ha lavorato accompagnata dal suo gruppo il pianista Christian Jacob, i bassisti Trey Henry e Kevin Axt ed il batterista Ray Brinker, facendo tournée in tutto il mondo. Cantante da diversi anni residente a Los Angeles. Voce che nel gran numero di vocalist che affollano il panorama odierno si distingue per la sua personalità, per la sua eleganza, per la sua abilità tecnica e la maturità culturale. Dalla voce un po’ nasale (che non guasta) limpida e con sfumature terragne che fanno ricordare Sheila Jordan, dalla bella immaginazione e grazia armonica. Nello scatt è meno valida, leggermente stucchevole, troppo prezioso per essere efficace. Ha insegnato al Dipartimento Jazz Studies alla University Southern California. Nel 2008 è stata direttrice della sezione vocale della Los Angeles Music Academy di Pasadena in California. E’ stata anche attiva in trio con il flautista Hubert Laws ed il chitarrista Larry Koonse.

Ha iniziato la professione a 16 anni, facendo parte di diverse orchestre fra le quali la Fumio Nanri’s Hot Peppers e nel 1952 ha messo su un proprio quintetto gli “Rhythm Aces”, sul modello dei gruppi di Benny Goodman. Nel 1957 ha ottenuto molto successo con un disco di stile hawaiano. Con il suo sestetto swing ha registrato a New York avendo come ospite Peanuts Hucko nel 1962 e con lui ha lavorato a New York all’Eddie Condon’s Club nell’estate del 1966. Ha continuato a guidare i suoi “Rhythm Aces” sino alla metà degli anni 90, avendo come ospiti Hucko e Helen Merrill.

Ha iniziato in giovane età a suonare il violino, la chitarra ed il pianoforte che ha suonato nell’orchestra dell’Università Waseda di Tokyo. Consigliato da Sadao Watanabe ha scelto il contrabasso ed ha debuttato con Watanabe nel 1969 e poi ha fatto parte del gruppo di Masubumi Kikuchi nel 1971. Nel 1973 è andato a New York dove ha collaborato con Stan Getz nel 1974, con i Jazz Messengers di Blakey dal 1974 al 1976, il quintetto di Bill Hardman e Junior Cook dal 1977 al 1982. Ha suonato anche con Dave Liebman, Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Sonny Stitt ed altri. Ha studiato alla Julliard Achool e quindi è tornato a Tokyo nel 1984, ha guidato il gruppo Matsuri dal 1984 al 1992 e gli East Bounce nel 1992.

SVENSSON ESBJORN (P)

Nasce in una famiglia che ama la musica, egli studia da solo sia la musica classica che quella rock, quindi perfeziona la sua tecnica pianistica alla Kungliga Musikhogsakolan. E’ passato al jazz a sedici anni durante gli studi universitari. Ha lavorato con l’orchestra di Fredrik Noren dal 1985 al 1988. Insieme all’amico il batterista Magnus Ostrom ed il bassista Dan Berglund ha guidato dal 1990 l’”E.S.T”. Trio legato alla tradizione lirica del pianismo all’europea, quello di Bill Evans e di George Shearing. Il gruppo ha ottenuto un grande successo e i suoi album molto venduti. Ha collaborato con molti musicisti suoi connazionali come Alex Riel, Victoria Tolstoy, Mads Vinding e Nils Landgern, con il quale ha partecipato al Festival di Montreaux, ottenendo un grande successo. Pianista e compositore dalla vena evansiana, improvvisa una musica intrisa di swing, di blues, di bebop, di modale, di free con grande naturalezza. In base al sondaggio tra i critici è risultato il nuovo talento internazionale più interessante. E’ morto durante una immersione subacquea.

Cieco di nascita, ha studiato l’organo nell’Istituto dei Ciechi di Stoccolma. Dedicatosi al Jazz, ha iniziato come solista di pianoforte dal 1941 al 1942, dal 1942 al 1948 ha lavorato con il gruppo del violinista Hasse Kahnnel, nel 1948 con Putte Wickman ed ha partecipato al Festival di Parigi nel 1949. Si è guadagnato un’ottima reputazione internazionale, ha inciso con lo pseudonimo ”Hammond Olsen”. Il suo gruppo ricalca il sound del gruppo di George Shearing. E’stato uno dei più famosi jazzisti svedesi.

Vive da molti anni a Toronto dove dirige un suo gruppo. Nel 1975 ha fatto una tournée con il gruppo di Paul Horn sino al 1977. A Toronto ha collaborato con Moe Koffman dal 1978 al 1982 ed ha accompagnato diversi musicisti americani in vari club della città. Ha lavorato occasionalmente con Woody Shaw dal 1983 al 1987 e con George Shearing. Ha anche suonato con Don Thompson, Pat LaBarbera, Joe LaBarbera ed ha diretto il quartetto JMOG (Jazz Men On The Go) nel 1992. Ha fatto diversi tour in Canada, fatto parte del quintetto di Free Trade insieme a Ralph Bowen, Renee Rosnes, Peter Leitch e Terry Clarke. Ha registrato inoltre con Jay McShann, Dam Noto, Doc Cheatham, Ed Bickert, Walter Norris, Geoff Keezer. Compositore dalla buone qualità e bassista dignitoso nell’ambito del filone dell’hard bop.

E’ cresciuto a Fair Lawn nel New Jersey, dove ha studiato pianoforte classico dall’età di sei anni e, stato spinto dal padre a interessarsi al jazz, ha studiato tromba e contrabasso alle scuole superiori. Scopre la sua predilezione per il contrabasso che ha studiato allo Yale, insieme alla composizione. Ha iniziato a suonare del dixieland e dello swing con Bud Freeman, Jimmy McPartland, Buddy Tate, Buck Clayton, Rex Stewart e Dickie Wells. Nell’autunno del 1959 è entrato nel trio di Paul Bley, la sua vita musicale viene sconvolta, conosce anche Carla, allora moglie di Paul Bley. Nel 1995 si trasferisce a New York dove ha suonato con Bud Freeman, in trio con Jimmy Giuffre e Bley nel 1961, con George Russell, Art Farmer, Marian McPartland, Benny Goodman, ha fatto parte dell’Improvisation Jazz Workshop. Ha suonato poi con Stan Getz e con Gary Burton. Nel 1971 decide di passare al basso elettrico; in California collabora con i pianisti Art Lande, Mike Nock e Mike Gibbs ed è sempre presente nelle varie formazioni di Carla Bley. Nel 1979 ha firmato il suo primo disco ”Home” accompagnato da Dave Liebman, Steve Kuhn, Lyle Mays, Bob Moses e Elvin Jones. Ha messo in musica poesie di Robert Creely per la voce di Sheila Jordan. Dal 1985 è venuto spesso in Francia, qui ha lavorato con Philippe Deschepper, ha fatto parte dell’Orchestre National de Jazz nel 1988 e del “Transatlantik Quartet” di Henry Texier. Swallow è il più chiaro esempio di cosa si intende per voce personalizzata del solista. E’ stato un vero pioniere del basso elettrico, che per lui è rimasta una scelta sofferta e nel quale strumento è un punto di riferimento stilistico ed espressivo ancora non superato.

Come altri suoi coetanei partito dalla lezione di Clifford Brown, ha subito in seguito quella di Kenny Dorham. Musicista di talento meritevole di maggiore attenzione.

SWARTZ HARVIE (B)

Harvie è da molti anni uno dei più affermati ed esperti contrabbassisti della scena jazzistica USA. Più noto come Harvie Swartz fino a qualche tempo fa, ha da qualche anno contratto il suo cognome in S per motivi personali. Diplomato in pianoforte ha iniziato a studiare il contrabasso nel secondo anno di frequenza alla Berklee School of Music ed ha iniziato a suonare con gruppi locali. Dopo il diploma nel 1970 ha trascorso un periodo in Europa, in Danimarca ha accompagnato Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Brew Moore, Jimmy Heath, Kenny Drew e Art Taylor. Ha suonato il basso elettrico in orchestre commerciali ed il contrabasso acustico a Boston con Mose Allison, Chris Connors, Al Cohn e Zoot Sims. Nel 1972 si è trasferito a New York dove insieme a Mike Abene ha accompagnato diverse cantanti: Jakie Cain e Roy Kral e Jackie Paris, ha lavorato con Thad Jones, Mel Lewis e Gil Evans. Nel corso di una prestigiosa carriera ha collaborato con molti dei più grandi nomi della scena jazz internazionale tra cui Stan Getz, Pat Metheny, Chet Baker, Jim Hall, Michael Brecker, Arturo O’Farrill, Lee Konitz, James Williams, James Moody, Houston Person, Art Farmer, Toots Thielemans, Bob Mintzer, Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Vic Juris, Danilo Perez, nonché con numerose stars della musica latina tra cui Paquito D’Rivera, Ray Barretto, Ray Vega, David Valentin. Ha lavorato regolarmente al “Richard’s Lounge” a Lakewood nel New Jersey, dove ha accompagnato Jan Hammer, John Abercrombie. Dal 1974 al 1976 ha fatto parte del Barry Miles’s Silverlight, del gruppo di Dave Friedman, con Eddie Daniels e ha registrato con Daniel Humair. Harvie S ha preso parte all’incisione di diverse centinaia di albums, otto dei quali da leader di proprie bands e quindici nelle vesti di co-leader con artisti come James Brown, Chick Corea, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Michael Brecker, Tom Harrell, Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, Kenny Barron, Bill Mays, Ingrid Jensen, Pat Martino, Louie Bellson, Leni Stern, Toots Thielemans, Akio Sasajiama, John Mastroianni, Sherrie Maricle, Mike Goodrick, Bernie Senesky, Hedrik Meurkens, Dr. Billy Taylor, Grover Washington Jr., David Mathews, Virginia Mayhew, Jay Clayton, Jane Ira Bloom e Tony Bennett. Uno dei suoi primi gruppi è stato negli anni ’70 la Double Image Band, che ha inciso per la ECM e la Enja, esibendosi nei maggiori festival mondiali. Ha fatto parte del quartetto di Steve Kuhn, col quale ha inciso per ECM, e nel cui repertorio figuravano anche diverse sue composizioni. Nel 1998 ha iniziato uno studio approfondito della musica latina, che, lo porta a divenire un componente di quella scena musicale con una propria band, riscuotendo ampi consensi di critica e pubblico. Attivo anche sul versante didattico, Harvie S dal 1984 è insegnante di contrabbasso presso la Manhattan School of Music, ha tenuto corsi presso numerosi colleges e università in tutto il mondo. Nell’autunno del 2003 ha effettuato come “Jazz Ambassador” un tour di sei settimane organizzato dal Dipartimento di Stato USA nel Sud-Est asiatico, ottenendo un vivo successo. E’ stato ospite di note trasmissioni radiofoniche, ha composto le sigle per documentari e ha preso parte alla realizzazione di video musicali. Insieme a Sheila Jordan, nel corso di una lunga collaborazione che ha dato origine a sette incisioni, Harvie S ha esplorato a fondo le possibilità del duo contrabbasso e voce, definendo di fatto uno standard di questo particolare tipo di formazione. Abile bassista sia con quello acustico che quello elettrico, abile con l’archetto e nel pizzicato. Ottimo compositore.

Ha debuttato con l’orchestra di Alex Hill. Ha suonato poi con Alphonse Trent dal 1924 al 1928, con gli “Eugene Crook’s Synco Six” e i “Banville Dandies” di Sammy Lewis. Ha suonato ed inciso con Jelly Roll Morton nel 1928, con Chick Webb nel 1929 è venuto in Europa e nel 1930 con gli “International Rhythm Aces” di Herb Fleming e sempre in Europa ha lavorato ad Amsterdam con la Plantation Band. Tornato a New York ha suonato e registrato con Cab Calloway, ancora con Webb, con Sam Woodyng ed è stato l’arrangiatore di Eugene Kennedy nel 1932. E’ tornato poi con Cab Calloway e vi è rimasto sino alla morte.

SWEATMAN WILBUR (LEAD)

Brunswick, Missouri. 7/2/1882. – New York. 9/3/1961.

Ha ricevuto le prime lezioni di pianoforte dalla sorella Eva ed ha studiato da solo il violino ed il clarinetto. Ha iniziato a lavorare nel vaudeville nell’orchestra di Nathaniel Clark Smith. Ha fatto da assistente a P.G.Lowery che dirige un’orchestra di un Circo e ha fatto parte dei “Mahara’s Minstrels”. Nel 1902 ha messo su una sua orchestra di tutti negri a Minneapolis ed è stato il primo negro ad incidere. Purtroppo il suo Maple Leaf Rag inciso su rullo è andato perduto. Ormai è uno dei più noti direttori di teatro vaudeville. Nel 1913 è arrivato a New York e ha diretto l’orchestra del Teatro Lafayette di Harlem sino al 1914 ed è quindi tornato al vaudeville con Crickett Smith. Durante la prima guerra mondiale ha lavorato per beneficenza al Brighton Beach, nel 1918 ha fondato la “Sweatman’s Original Jazz Band” con la quale fra il 1918 ed il 1921 ha inciso diversi dischi e nella quale hanno suonato un Duke Ellington giovanissimo, oltre a Freddie Keppard, Sonny Greer e Otto Hardwick. Nel 1921 ha lavorato al Connie’s Inn e con lui c’è Coleman Hawkins. Negli anni ’40 ha suonato al Paddell’s Club di New York. Solista ricordato più per riuscire a suonare tre clarinetti contemporaneamente e per avere avuto nel suo gruppo Duke Ellington alle prime armi, che per il suo merito nella valorizzazione e divulgazione del jazz.

SWEET SUBSTITUTE.

Trio vocale, nato a Brisol nel 1975 e composto da Angie Masterson, Teri Leggett e Chris Staples che in seguito verrà sostituita da Kate McNab. Il gruppo ricalca lo tile delle Andrews Sister, che però man mano hanno arricchito di spunti più moderni. Il loro primo album lo hanno inciso nel 1976 “Something Special” accompagnate da Keith Nichols. In seguito il trio ha fatto frequenti tournée e ha lavorato spesso alla radio ed alla TV. Con la Nichols’s Midnite Follies ha partecipato a diversi Festival Europei. Per molto tempo hanno avuto il sostegno di Andy Leggett, chitarrista ed arrangiatore, in seguito mancato Leggett hanno lavorato con il gruppo di Chris Barber. Alla metà degli anni’80 Nichols a sostituito Barber. Ancora attivo come gruppo negli anni ’90.
