Dopo aver studiato pianoforte si è dedicato alla marimba ed in seguito allo xilofono, che sotto le sue sapienti mani è diventato uno valido strumento jazzistico. Nel 1925 ha esordito a Chicago con un’orchestra di marimbe ”The Collegians”, in seguito per un certo periodo ha diviso il suo tempo tra studio e lavoro, ha suonato con Victor Young, Ben Bernie e con Paul Whiteman, nel 1934 ha sposato la cantante dell’orchestra Mildred Bailey, dalla quale poi si è separato nel 1945. Ha lavorato a New York come solista, ha diretto un sestetto insieme a Charlie Barnet tra il 1935 ed il 1936. Insieme alla moglie ha diretto un gruppo dal 1936 al 1939, gruppo che si avvale degli arrangiamenti di Eddie Sauter e che ha prodotto il primo jazz da camera proposto in maniera molto raffinata. Nel 1943 è passato al vibrafono, ha suonato con Benny Goodman, ha inciso con Charlie Parker e Dizzy Gillespie e nel 1946 è entrato nel primo gregge di Woody Herman ed ha anche collaborato con Billie Holiday. Nel 1949 si è trasferito sulla costa orientale dove ha messo su un trio insieme con Charles Mingus e Tal Farlow, gruppo che ha ottenuto un grande successo di pubblico e soprattutto di critica. In seguito Mingus e Farlow saranno sostituiti egregiamente da Red Mitchell e Jimmy Raney. Nel 1951 è tornato con Goodman e vi è rimasto sino al 1961. Ha dovuto subire un serio intervento all’orecchio, rimessosi fisicamente ha ripreso l’attività in una tournée europea, alla quale ha partecipato sia come solista che in un gruppo di tutte stelle dal 1968 al 1969. Dopo una sosta, ha ripreso alla metà degli anni ’70 è ritornato sulla scena con nuovo trio ancora insieme a Farlow. Ha collaborato nell’arco della sua lunga carriera con John Kirby, Teddy Wilson, Slam Stewart, gli Hollywood Hucksters, con la JATP di Norman Granz, Scott Hamilton, Benny Carter ed altri. Partendo dallo xilofono e la marimba, di cui è stato maestro nello stile Chicago degli anni’30, egli ha avuto delle continue evoluzioni. Il suo suono del suo vibrafono è diverso dagli altri vibrafonisti, è un suono secco, senza vibrato, ispirato al pianismo di Teddy Wilson. E’ passato dallo swing, al bebop, al cool jazz, con grande disinvoltura grazie alla sua grande tecnica ed al suo gusto raffinatissimo. Solista splendido nell’interpretazione delle ballads, anche se dimostra un certa rigidità ritmica nei tempi mossi. Musicista particolarmente innamorato dei gruppi di musica da camera, nei quali il suo collaboratore ideale era Eddie Sauter.

Personaggio molto noto nel campo dello spettacolo per essere stato protagonista come minstrel nei spettacoli di vaudeville per molti anni. Ha recitato anche insieme alla moglie la famosa cantante Nora Bayes. Ha composto le canzoni delle prime esibizioni delle Zigfield Follies ed insieme alla moglie ha creato e lanciato “Shine On Harvest Moon” nel 1908.
NOSSOV KONSTANTIN, GEORGYEVICH. (TP)
Leningrado, Russia. 24/7/1938. – Sofia, Bulgaria. 29/6/1984.
Ha studiato tromba alla N.A.Rimsky-Koraskov la scuola di musica della sua città, dove si è diplomato nel 1956. Ha debuttato nel gruppo diretto dal sassofonista Orest Kandat ed ha spesso suonato al Leningrad Jazz Club nel 1958. Dal 1959 al 1966 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Yosif Vainstein. In seguito ha suonato con Ady Rosner, poi nel 1968 con la Kontsertny Estradny Orkestr Tsentral’novo della TV e l’orchestra Vsesoyuznovo Radio. Dal 1969 al 1973 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra del ristorante Vecherny Arbat di Mosca, poi con il gruppo Melodiya e con l’orchestra di Oleg Lundstrem. Nel 1980 si è trasferito a Sofia in Bulgaria dove ha fatto parte della Dinamit Brass Band. Ha anche registrato disperi album come leader.
NOSTALGIA 77.
Gruppo di musicisti che ha deciso di riportare alla ribalta il jazz di intrattenimento in voga negli anni ’60 e lo fà in particolare attraverso degli arrangiamenti proposti però con gusto attuale, non disdegnando gli sconfinamenti nel funky e nel latin jazz.
