PETRUCCIANI MICHEL (P)

Orange, Francia. 28/12/1962. – New York. 6/1/1999.

Affetto da nanismo, ma soprattutto da una grave malattia alle ossa, ha vinto la natura non benevola dedicandosi ancora adolescente completamente alla musica, sin da dare il primo concerto in pubblico a tredici anni ed a quindici ha suonato insieme con Clark Terry e Kenny Clark. Ha studiato per otto anni il pianoforte classico e a dodici anni ha debuttato con il padre chitarrista ed il fratello Luiss bassista. Nel 1969 si è trasferito a Parigi dove è entrato per la prima volta in uno studio di registrazione con Jean Francois Jenny-Clark e Aldo Romano e poi con Bernard Lubatt e con Alain Brunet. Nel 1980 a Parigi ha collaborato con Chuck Israel ed ha registrato il suo primo disco da leader ”Flash” insieme al buon amico Aldo Romano ed al fratello Luiss. Nel 1982 si è trasferito in America, in California, qui ha suonato con Charles Lloyd, in duo con Lee Konitz, con Jim Hall, con Wayne Shorter, ha inciso molti album accompagnato da Palle Danielsson e Elliott Zigmund, con Ron McClure nel 1985, con Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Eddie Louiss, Freddie Hubbard, Buster Williams, Billy Hart, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, Cecil McBee, Eddie Gomez. Ha fatto parte del Manhattan Project nel 1989. Nel gennaio del 1993 si è sposato a New York con la pianista classica italiana Gilda Butta, il ricevimento di nozze è stato offerto al Village Vanguard, mai concesso prima d’ora per tali occasioni. Gli è stato anche dedicato un film dal bassista/cineasta Frank Cassenti ”Lettre à Michel Petrucciani”. E’ stato un giovane pianista super virtuoso, l’esponente più valido del connubio tra musica colta europea e jazz. Inizialmente ha subito molto l’influenza di Bill Evans, come egli stesso riconosce, del resto un pò come tutti i pianisti degli anni’ 80. Pian piano però ha acquistato una propria identità e personalità musicale. La sua musica profondamente legata al lirismo ha assunto nel corso del tempo il carattere del moderno mainstream, musica piena di fresca ispirazione. Pianista dal tocco limpido, brillante e dalla comunicativa immediata. Profondo estimatore di Duke Ellington, la morte lo ha colto mentre si accingeva a dare una sua particolare interpretazione alle composizioni sacre di Ellington. E’ stato sepolto nel famoso cimitero del Père Lachaise, vicino alla tomba di Chopin.

Cantante molto stimata dai suoi connazionali. Coinvolta dalla musica in un famiglia di musicisti, ha studiato a otto anni il flauto e dal 1991 si è impegnata nel canto. Nel 1995 è arrivata a Stoccolma ed ha fatto parte di ottime orchestre ha livello nazionale. Ha iniziato ad ottenere consensi anche fuori della Svezia. Voce bianca dalla bella dizione, equilibrata, stile confidenziale, molto professionale ed espressiva, anche se ancora acerba. Le sue fonti di ispirazione sono Helen Merrill, Annie Ross e Meredith D’Ambrosio. Ha collaborato con Charlie Norman, Putte Wickman, Georg Riedel, Peter Gullin, Toots Thielemans e Kenny Wheeler.

E’ nato in una riserva indiana da padre Cherokee e da madre Choctaw. Le sue prime esibizioni le ha fatte nell’orchestra di famiglia, composta da undici fratelli e sorelle e diretta dal padre, suonando prevalentemente a Minneapolis. Nel 1943 è entrato nell’orchestra di Charlie Barnet con il quale si è trasferito a New York, qui ha suonato poi con Earl Hines nel 1944, con Lionel Hampton, con Lucky Millinder, con Roy Eldridge ed in breve diventa il miglior bassista in circolazione. Ha fondato insieme a Dizzy Gillespie il primo gruppo bop della storia del Jazz, con esso si è esibito all’Onyx dal 1943 al 1944. In seguito ha suonato con Coleman Hawkins nel 1944, con Boyd Raeburn nel 1945, con Duke Ellington dal 1945 al 1946, con Leonard Feather, con Art Tatum nel 1946, con Woody Herman nel 1948, con Louie Bellson, con Miles Davis nel 1952, con Art Blakey nel 1953, con Lee Konitz, con Urbie Green nel 1955, con Milton Jackson, con Thelenious Monk nel 1956, con Phineas Newborn, con Sonny Rollins nel 1958, con Stan Getz e con Bud Powell. Ha organizzato durante la sua carriera diverse sue big band con le quali ha registrato diversi album, nei quali egli ha suonato anche il violoncello. Nel 1958 si è trasferito in Europa ed ha preso dimora a Copenaghen, dove ha trascorso il suo ultimo periodo di vita regalando a molti musicisti europei il suo prezioso messaggio. Erede diretto della tecnica e dello stile di Blanton, senz’altro uno dei migliori violoncellisti ed uno dei più grandi bassisti della storia del Jazz. Ha fortemente influenzato i bassisti dell’epoca bop e in particolare Ray Brown e Charles Mingus. In possesso di un’agilità sbalorditiva, variava i suoni del suo strumento con la stessa disinvoltura di uno strumento a fiato. Arrangiatore e leader che preferiva le sonorità morbide ed inusuali. Una notizia curiosa, ai tre figli ha imposto il nome di Cello, Cellina e Celeste.

PETTIS JACK (TS)

Danville, Illinois.1902.

Ha inizia a suonare da ragazzo a Chicago il C/melodi sax in piccoli gruppi. Il primo ingaggio importante lo ha ottenuto all’ Eerie Club con l’orchestra di Elmer Schoebel. E’ entrato poi nella “Dixon’s Band” sull’S.S.Capitol ed infine nei “New Orleans Rhythm Kings”. Nel 1924 ha organizzato un suo gruppo con il quale ha accompagnato la cantante Ann Pennington nei spettacoli di vaudeville, con la quale ha raggiunto il massimo del successo al Palace di New York. Ha suonato sino al 1929 con Ben Bernie, quindi ha iniziato a lavorare anche come arrangiatore. Nel 1930 ha messo su la “Night Club Orchestra” con la quale ha lavorato sul battello “S.S.Leviathan”. Ha accompagnato il cantante Morton Downey al Club Delmonico e ha lavorato anche per la Columbia Broadcasting System a New York. Nel 1932 si è esibito al Summer Terrace dell’Hotel New Yorker, da dove ha trasmesso via radio trasmissioni che lo hanno reso ancora più popolare. E’ andato a Hollywood e in seguito ha diretto nel 1937 una sua orchestra a Los Angeles. Questo sarà il suo ultimo impegno avendo preso la decisione di ritirarsi dalla attività. Musicista ricordato per essere stato il primo vero sassofonista del jazz. E’ stato anche un ottimo organizzatore di sedute di incisione, alle quali parteciparono un po’ tutti i migliori musicisti dell’epoca.

Ha iniziato a cantare a quindici anni, dopo essere vissuta in California e a Brooklyn ha trascorso un po’ di anni a Parigi prima di stabilirsi a NewYork. Musicista di grande esperienza, ha lavorato nei gruppi di strada, con il gruppo “The Lost Wandering Blues & Jazz Band”. Cantante legata alle radici del jazz e del blues, dalla voce dal timbro caldo, profondo, velata di una certa malinconia, ma nello stesso tempo che guarda il futuro e lo si nota soprattutto dalle sue composizioni.

Il suo primo gruppo lo ha organizza con solisti della disciolta orchestra di Will Marion Cook durante una tournée in Inghilterra. Nel gruppo suona anche Sidney Bechet. Tale gruppo ha preso il nome di “Jazz Kings” ed ha ottenuto un ingaggio al Hammersmith Palais di Londra. Ha effettuato diverse tournée in Europa e nel 1939 è tornato negli Stati Uniti. Negli anni’50 ha suonato nella “Wally Edwards’Rehearsal Band” al Prince’s Hall di Harlem.

PEYTON DAVE (LEAD)

Louisiana. 1885. – Chicago, Illinois. Maggio, 1955.

Ha debuttato Chicago con l’orchestra di Wilburn Sweatman nel 1908 al 1912. E’ passato poi in altri gruppi sino al 1912 quando ha messo su la sua “Synphonic Orchestra” della quale hanno fatto parte celebri musicisti di New Orleans, tra i quali anche Joe Oliver. Ha lavorato nei migliori club della città, diventando celebre sia come direttore di orchestra che come pianista. Nel 1935 ha inciso con Richard M. Jones ed in seguito ha svolto più l’attività di impresario che quella di musicista. Alla fine degli anni ’40 è ancora attivo nei club di Chicago.

PEZZOTTA MARIO (TB)

Alzano Lombardo, Bergamo, Italia. 23/12/1920. – Bollate, Milano. 9/2/2004.

Già all’età di otto anni suona il bombardino nella banda del suo paese e a diciassette lavora nelle orchestre da ballo. Durante la guerra ha suonato nella Banda Militare a Milano. Nel 1943 è riparato in Svizzera dove ha organizzato un gruppo in un campo di prigionia. Tornato a Milano ha collaborato con Aldo Rossi nella “Orchestra del Momento” ed in seguito con Gorni Kramer, con il quale ha continuato ad avere rapporti per molti anni. Ha iniziato anche a metter su propri gruppi ed ha collaborato con Gianni Basso, Piero Umiliani, Armando Travajoli, Franco Cerri, Gil Cuppini e Chet Baker. Ha diretto anche diversi suoi gruppi nei locali della città, ha partecipato a trasmissioni radiofoniche e televisive. Ha fatto parte dell’orchestra ritmica della RAI, è stato nel 1968 nell’orchestra del Teatro alla Scala e nell’Orchestra Sinfonica della RAI. Ha insegnato al conservatorio di Verona. Dal 1987 è stato colpito da una grave malattia ed ha dovuto ridurre l’attività. Ha continuato a dare lezioni di trombone e basso tuba privatamente. E’ stato il primo trombonista della storia del jazz italiano a cimentarsi con il jazz moderno

Dopo aver studiato il trombone ha lavorato già all’età di 14 anni in vari gruppi nella sua città. Nel 1924 ha suonato con Eddie Elkins, nel 1925 con Paul Spechi dal 1925 al 1927, con Cass Hagan dal 1927 al 1928, con Ed Kikerby e con Red Nichols. Ha suonato e registrato con i California Ramblers, ha suonato poi con Bert Lown sino al 1936 quando ha iniziato la sua attività indipendente in sale di registrazione e presso le stazioni radio. Nel 1947 ha suonato con William Bradley, nel 1962 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Tony Parenti, ha diretto un suo gruppo dixieland, ha suonato con Paul Lavelle dal 1964 al 1965. Nel 1969 ha suonato nel celebre club ”El Marocco” con Willis Kelly. Ha inciso anche con i Georgians, con i Goufus Five, con Bob Howard e con Adrian Rollini.

La superband diretta da Gene Harris. Essa è una splendida macchina musicale. Forse non ha dato le emozioni di altre big band ed in molte circostanze si ha l’impressione di sentire cose già ascoltate ed anche se gli arrangiamenti risultano talvolta troppo elaborati, il suo ascolto resta divertente e distensivo. L’ascolto diventa particolarmente piacevole ascolto quando negli arrangiamenti viene lasciato ampio spazio a solisti di talento e di provata capacità di cui l’orchestra abbonda.
