SCHIANO MARIO (SA)

Napoli, Italia. 22/7/1933. – Roma. 10/5/2008.

Dall’età di dieci anni ha studiato pianoforte ed in seguito la fisarmonica ed infine nel 1957 è passato al sax alto. Dopo aver fatto esperienza in gruppi da ballo ha esordito nel jazz nel 1958 nel quartetto con Franco Campanino, Aldo Sassone e Gege Munari. Nel 1960 ha fondato insieme a Giuseppe Parente il “New Souther Jazz Combo”. Trasferitosi a Roma ha fatto le sue prime esperienze nel free con Romano Sciò e nel 1966 è entrato nel “Gruppo Romano di Free Jazz” di Franco Pecori. Ha collaborato con il “Modern Art Trio”, con Jacques Peltzer, con Enrico Rava, con il “Detroit Free Jazz Club”, con Don Moye. Nel 1969 si è esibito in trio con Bruno Tommaso e Pecori, che spesso è diventato un quartetto con Massimo Rocci, con Maurizio Giammarco, Vincenzo Maxia ed altri con i quali ha partecipato a molte manifestazioni. Nel 1972 si è esibito con un quartetto nel quale agiscono due contrabbassi, in sestetto con tre sassofoni: Tommaso Vittorini e Massimo Urbani. Ha lavorato con il gruppo ”Spirale”, in trio con Roberto Bellatalla, Lino Liguori, Gaetano Liguori e con Guido Mazzon nella “Unità Sindacale”. Alla fine degli anni ’70 ha suonato con Andrea Centazzo, Domenico Guaccero, Alessandro Sbordoni. Ha fondato il “Test” e con Misha Mengelberg, con Paul Rotherford e Han Bennink il “European Proposal”. Nel 1980 e stato attivo in un gruppo formato da cinque contrabbassi. Musicista molto portato al free ed alla sperimentazione ed in ciò è stato il primo e tra i più importanti musicisti di jazz italiani.

Studia alla Performing Arts di New York ed inizia l’attività nel 1945, ma i primi impegni di un certo livello vengono nel 1948 con Kenny Drew, poi con Allen Eager e Buddy Rich. In seguito lavora sia nel jazz che nel pop, nel 1954 lo troviamo con Herbie Fields e nel 1958 con Kai Winding. Negli anni ’60 suona per lo più con gruppi latino-americani, con Machito (1962) Tito Puente (1964) e suona il basso elettrico con Dizzy Gillespie (1966).

SCHIFRIN LALO (P)

Buenos Aires, Argentina. 21/6/1932.

Figlio d’arte, il padre era direttore della Buenos Aires Philarmonic. Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte da ragazzo e dopo aver terminato il servizio militare si è recato a Parigi per frequentare il locale Conservatorio. Ha iniziato a suonare a Parigi con musicisti di jazz locali e nel 1945 ha rappresentato l’Argentina al Festival Internazionale del Jazz. Tornato in patria ha messo su una big band sul modello di Basie-Gillespie ed ha iniziato anche la sua attività di arrangiatore e di pianista nella musica popolare e nel jazz. Nel 1958 si è trasferito a New York dove ha lavorato in trio con Eddie Haas e Rudy Collins, come arrangiatore per Xavier Cugat, ha collaborato nella JATP, ha fatto parte dal 1960 al 1962 del quintetto di Dizzy Gillespie, per il quale ha scritto ”Gillespiana Suite” presentata con successo alla Carnegie Hall. Ha scritto per Quincy Jones, quindi nel 1962 si è trasferito a Hollywood dove ha iniziato a lavorare per il cinema e la televisione e dove ben presto si è affermato come uno dei musicisti di maggior prestigio. E’ stato direttore della L.A. Neophonic Orchestra nel 1966, ha composto su commissione di Julian Adderley ”Dialogue For Jazz Quintet And Orchestra”. Si è impegnato come compositore e come solista si è esibito nel 1973 alla Shelly’s Manne Hole. Ha diretto l’Orchestra Of St. Luke’s con la quale ha registrato su musiche di Astor Piazzolla. E’ stato anche arrangiatore di Stan Kenton, ha composto la suite ”The New Continent” eseguita nel 1962 al Festival del Jazz di Monterey. Ha collaborato validamente anche con Stan Getz e Sarah Vaughan.

Ha debuttato nel 1941 con Louis Prima, poi ha lavorato con Buddy Rich, nel 1947 con Anita O’Day, con Oscar Pettiford, con Stan Kenton (nel 1953) ha registrato e fatto un tour europeo. Ha registrato con Pete Rugolo nel 1954, con George Handy nel 1955. Ha fatto parte del quintetto di Miles Davis nel 1954. Ha registrato con Ralph Burns, con Eddie Bert, con Tito Puente, con Chuck Wayne, nel 1957 con Sam Most. E’ tornato con Kenton nel 1959 e con un suo quartetto nei club di New York. Ha lavorato per un breve periodo freelance ed in seguito ha lasciato la musica a tempo pieno per entrare nella polizia civile di New York.

Ha organizzato una sua orchestra nel 1910 che ha guidato sino al 1926. In questa orchestra hanno militato i migliori musicisti dixieland del tempo. Essa si è esibita al ”Old Dauphine Theater” ed in altri teatri importanti di New Orleans, oltre al “Heineman Park” durante le partite di baseball. Nello stesso periodo Shilling ha diretto insieme a Johnny Fisher una brass band. E’ stato uno dei più notevoli direttori di orchestra bianchi della prima generazione.

Ha studiato il pianoforte ed il clarinetto da solo e ha debuttato dal 1938 al 1939 con il gruppo “The Bouncer”. Poi ha fatto parte dei “Mike Serenaders” e dei “Swing Papa’s” dal 1939 al 1943 e dell’orchestra diretta da Klaas van Beeck nel 1943. Ha fondato insieme al pianista Frans Vink la “Dutch Swing College”, una scuola di jazz e nel 1944 la “Dutch Swing College Band” della quale nel 1946 è diventato il leader. Ne cambia lo stile da quello ellingtoniano in quello dixieland, lo porta al successo ed è diventata la formazione europea più longeva. Con essa ha accompagnato Sidney Bechet, Jimmy Whiterspoon e Teddy Wilson. Ha guidato ancora un suo gruppo dal 1956 al 1959. Ha iniziato a lavorare nell’industria aeronautica, continuando saltuariamente a dirigere un suo gruppo, con il quale ha partecipato al North Sea Jazz Festival alla fine del 1970 ed all’inizio del 1980. Ha inciso una grande quantità di dischi e fatto un grande numero di tournée in tutto il mondo. Senz’altro il musicista jazz più famoso d’Olanda.

Figlio di un proprietario di piantagioni di gomma nel Siam e nella Malesia, egli ha trascorso i suoi primi anni di vita in questi luoghi. Nel 1934 è andato in Danimarca dove nel 1947 ha iniziato a suonare con gli “Harlem Kiddies” e con i quali è rimasto sino al 1953. Dal 1953 al 1955 ha suonato in Svezia con Arne Domnerus ed in seguito è tornato in Danimarca dove ha lavorato freelance. Ha collaborato, durante la sua permanenza in Scandinavia, con Stan Getz dal 1958 al 1961. E’ stato il batterista fisso al Montmarte di Copenhagen dal 1962 al 1963 ed ha fatto parte della Radiojazzgruppen dal 1961 al 1965, della Radioens Big Band dal 1964 al 1969. Per ragioni di salute ha lasciato l’attività. E’ stato uno dei migliori batteristi europei della sua generazione, dal grande senso dello swing. Il suo stile è una combinazione perfetta di swing e bop tradizionale. Ha fatto parte dell’European All Stars. Ha registrato con Harry Arnold, Svend Asmussen, Rolf Billger, Don Byas, Ib Glindemann, Dexter Gordon, Lars Gullin, Bengt Hallberg, gli Harlem Kiddies, Jan Johannson, Brew Moore, Erik Moseholm, Carl-Henrik Norin, Bud Powell e Monica Zetterlund.

Ha iniziato a studiare musica e composizione classica all’età di otto anni. Ha frequentato la Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik di Colonia e già a quattordici anni ha iniziato a seguire il Jazz ed a suonare nel gruppo della scuola diretto da Kurt Edlhagen. Ha studiato pianoforte jazz con Francio Coppieters. Ha suonato con Gunter Hampel dal 1965 al 1968 esibendosi anche al Blue Note di Parigi, poi con il quintetto ed il sestetto di Manfred Schoof. Ha ricevuto l’incarico di costituire una grande orchestra per il Festival di Berlino, la Globe Unity Orchestra, da allora il suo nome è rimasto legato a questa orchestra, senza dubbio la più importante di Europa. Con la stessa ha presentato la sua composizione “Globe Unity”, commissionatagli dalla RIAS Radio al Berliner Jazzstage con grande successo. Nel 1988 ha fondato la Berliner Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, diretta insieme a Aki Takase. Ha diretto anche piccoli gruppi, il trio insieme a Evan Parker e Paul Lovens, che con Peter Kowald è diventato un quartetto dal 1973 al 1978. Ha registrato con Alan Silva, con Reggie Workman, ha collaborato con Sven-Ake Johansson. Altri trii con Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, con Sunny Murray, in duo con Takase, con Sam Rivers, con Tony Oxley e nel 1995 nell’Improvisors Pool. Nel 1995 ha registrato un album frutto della collaborazione iniziata nel 1992 tra gli studenti di una classe della Hochschule der Kunste di Berlino. Profondamente influenzato da Cecil Taylor. La sua musica è una combinazione di free-jazz e musica classica di avanguardia. Egli è uno dei più significativi esponenti della musica improvvisata europea, cioè quella sviluppatasi sulle premesse del free jazz americano.

SCHLITTEN DON, DONALD.

New York. 4/3/1932.

Produttore e fotografo. Ha studiato alla High School of Music and Art e alla fine degli anni ’40 ha seguito i corsi di sassofono al New York Conservatory of Modern Music. Ha intrapreso la carriera di artista all’inizio degli anni ’50 ed in seguito ha lavorato nella Compagnia discografica Signal, poi con la Prestige, per la Muse, la Xanadù, la Columbia, la MPS e la Mercury. E’ stato socio di Ira Gilter ed ha organizzato molte importanti manifestazioni. Parallelamente ha svolto la carriera di fotografo e i suoi lavori sono apparsi su riviste di jazz, copertine di dischi, libri e filmati.

 

SCHLUTER WOLFGANG (VIB)

Berlino, Grmania. 12/11/1933.

Ha studiato percussioni alla Hochschule di Musica di Berlino dal 1950 al 1954 e nello stesso tempo ha fatto parte di orchestrine da ballo. Dal 1956 al 1963 ha fatto parte del quintetto di Michael Naura ed ha collaborato anche con George Shearing, con il Modern Jazz Quartet, con Cannonball Adderley, con Rolf Kuhn, con Horst Jankowski, della German All Stars, nel 1978 ha suonato con Volker Kriegel. Ha fatto parte ad Amburgo della Norddeutscher Rundifunk con la quale è rimasto sino al 1994. Ha registrato spesso con Naura e ha lavorato come compositore ed arrangiatore per orchestre da ballo. Vibrafonista tedesco dalla ottima tecnica.

Musica da atmosfere scure, al limite dello spettrale, dalle note lente e gravi, una musica nebulosa, evocativa, ancestrale. Dalla cupa solennità di un canto gregoriano da una parte e dalla contemporaneità spinta dall’altra che con la loro fusione creano uno straordinario appeal..

SCHMIDLIN PETER (DR-PERC)

Germania, 28/12/1947.

Ha iniziato a suonare la batteria a 15 anni e nel 1963 ha vinto il primo premio per batteristi al festival di Zurigo. E’ risultato nei concorsi il miglior batterista degli anni dal 1964 al 1966. Ha suonato in Svizzera con il bassista Isla Eckinger, dal 1967 al 1969 ha fatto una tournée con Buck Clayton, ha suonato poi con Don Byas, con Sir Charles Thompson, con i “Tremble Kids”ed altri. Ha svolto attività freelance in Svizzera ed in Germania con diversi gruppi di solisti americani come: Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer, Joe Haider, Fernando Vincenzo, ed altri. Nel 1971 ha fatto parte del “Jazz Live Trio”. Nel 1973 è entrato nel gruppo “Magog”, con il quale si è esibito al Festival di Montreux. Ha partecipato a molti concerti in Italia con Franco Ambrosetti, con Hugo Heredia e con Gianni Basso. Ha accompagnato in diversi concerti Annette Weisbrod, Slide Hampton, Dexter Gordon, Vince Benedetti, Ted Curson, Bob Degen, Ack van Rooyen, Jiggs Wigham, benny Bailey, Horace Parlan, Dusko Goykovich, Bobby Jones ed altri.

 

SCHNEIDER HAWE, HANS WOLF. (TB-VIB)

Lipsia, Germania. 25/4/1930.

A otto anni ha iniziato ha suonare il violino e a 17 anni il trombone. Nel 1948 ha fondato il gruppo “Feetwarmers”e nel 1951 si è trasferito a Berlino Ovest, dove ha studiato e ha messo su il gruppo “Spree City Stompers”, gruppo che ha avuto molto successo, ha partecipato a dei film, ha lavorato in televisione ed ha fatto tournée in Europa ed in Africa. E’ considerato il migliore trombonista tedesco di jazz tradizionale. Ha lavorato spesso nei club di Berlino, ha fatto il giornalista e fotografo e ha suonato freelance in Germania ed in Svizzera. Nel 1972 ha fondato il gruppo “Hawe and the Hot Wave”, poi la “Dixie Bellows”e nel 1976 il “Schwarzwalder Swing Gemeinschaft”nel quale egli ha suonato il vibrafono. Ha collaborato con Albert Nicholas, Benny Waters e Preston Jackson.

SCHNEIDER LARRY (ST-SS)

Long Island, New York. 26/9/1949.

Ha iniziato a suonare il sassofono all’età di otto anni, ma il padre che aveva altri progetti gli ha imposto di studiare biologia all’università. Conosciuto Andy LaVerne, ha lasciato gli studi per suonare in duo con lui. Nel 1970 ha deciso di dedicarsi completamente alla musica, si è trasferito a New York dove ha suonato con Bill Cobham, nella big band di Jones/Lewis, con Horace Silver, con Bill Evans, con Jim McNeely. In seguito si è stabilito in California. Nel 1987 è venuto in Europa, dove ha lavorato con l’Orchestre National de Jazz, diretta da Francois Jeanneau e con la Concert Jazz Band di George Gruntz. Ha messo su un gruppo con Mike Richmond, Adam Nussbaum e LaVerne o Beirach al pianoforte. Sassofonista dal suono caldo, dalla voce suadente.
