WALLACE BENNIE (ST)

Chattanooga, Tennessee. 18/11/1946.

Ha iniziato a studiare a 12 anni il clarinetto ed in seguito il sassofono. Mentre suonava in orchestrine locali di country music e R&B, ha frequentato la Tennessee University dove si è diplomato in clarinetto nel 1968. Ha lavorato in piccoli gruppi nei club di Denver nel Colorado, ha incontrato Gary Burton che lo ha incoraggiato ad andare a New York. Nel 1971 ha fatto il suo debutto professionale con Barry Harris, ha suonato poi con Monty Alexander, con Sheila Jordan nel 1976. Ha messo su un suo trio con Eddie Gomez e Eddie Moore, che ha mantenuto dal 1977 al 1979, in seguito Moore è stato sostituito da Dannie Richmond e da Alvin Queen ed ha avuto come ospiti Tommy Flanagan, Chick Corea e Jimmy Knepper. Ha suonato in giro per l’Europa e Giappone, esibendosi in diversi jazz festival. Durante il contratto con l’editrice Blue Note ha registrato con artisti di blues e rock come il chitarrista Stenie Ray Vaughan e il cantante e pianista Dr.John. Ha anche registrato nel 1987 con Mose Allison. E’ andato a Los Angeles a lavorare per il cinema e qui ha collaborato con Jimmy Rowles, Jerry Hahan, Gerald Wilson e Anthony Wilson. Nel 1997 è tornato a New York e suonato con Mulgrew Miller. Ha anche collaborato con Buddy Rich, il National Jazz Ensemble, con la Concert Band di George Gruntz, Franco Ambrosetti, Chuck Marohnic. Sassofonista la cui fonte di ispirazione inizialmente è stata Sonny Rollins. Ma in seguito ha fatto parte del gruppo dei sassofonisti tenori che hanno rinverdito la tradizione nera, un po il ritorno agli Hawkins e ai Webster.

Nel 1932 si è trasferito a New York per una scrittura al Club Saratoga. Ha suonato con Jimmy Lunceford e dal 1938 al 1942 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Fats Waller, con il quale ha anche registrato. Dopo la morte di Waller ha ancora fatto parte del gruppo guidato dal cantante Pat Flowers. Ha anche suonato con Gene Sedric, Garland Wilson ed ha avuto anche una sua orchestra con la quale negli anni ’40 si è esibito in molti club importanti tra i quali il “Le Ruban Blue”. E’ stato ancora attivo negli anni ’70.

WALLACE GEORGE.

Clio, Alabama. 25/8/1919. – Montgomety, Alabama. 13/9/1998.

Nome tristemente famoso negli annali del jazz perché è stato negli anni ’50 e ’60 il più duro oppositore alla integrazione razziale. Era proprio un persecutore del mondo del jazz e dei suoi musicisti di colore. Finito sulla sedia a rotelle per ferite d’arma da fuoco, ha riconosciuto i suoi errori ed ha chiesto perdono al popolo nero americano.

WALLACE SIPPIE, THOMAS BEULAH, BELLE (VC)

Houston, Texas. 1/11/1898. – Detroit, Michigan. 1/11/1986.

Cantante di blues classico, compositrice e pianista. Nata in una famiglia di musicisti ha iniziato a lavorare giovanissima. Nel 1923 ha registrato il suo primo disco ed ha accompagnato King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Dodds, Natty Dominique e Sidney Bechet ed altri importanti musicisti dell’epoca. Nella geografia del blues Sippie rappresenta la parte sud-occidentale. Voce da contralto grave, dai capricciosi cambi di tono, dai superbi crescendo sconvolgenti, è stata una notevole raconteuse ed ha portato nel blues classico marcati accenti country. Ha volte accompagnata dal fratello Hersal Thomas, un pianista brillante, un bimbo prodigio, che purtroppo è morto e prematuramente avvelenato. E’ stata anche egli stessa una valida pianista. Spesso ha registrato anche accompagnata dai pianisti Roosevelt Skyes e Little Brother Montgomery. Dalla metà degli anni ’30 cantante gospel e negli anni ’60 cantante di jazz e di blues. Si è esibita in giro per l’Europa, nel 1979 il suo maggiore collaboratore è stato James Dapogny, ha preso parte nel 1982 al programma televisivo di David Letterman “Woman be Wise”con la cantante Bonnie Raitt. Il suo album “Seppie” ha avuto una nomination al Grammy Award. Ha composto molte canzoni melodiose ed aggraziate.

Ha suonato in Inghilterra ed in altre parti d’Europa accompagnando il cantante Cleveland Watkiss nel 1991, ha fatto parte del quartetto di John Stevens, ha collaborato con Gary Crosby e con il Crosby’s Nu Troop, dal 1995 al 1996 con il sassofonista Ed Jones. Nel 1995 ha formato un suo gruppo il “Sound Advice” nel quale ha combinato la musica africana, la musica classica contemporanea, il bop e d il rap.

WALLER FATS, THOMAS WRIGHT (P-VC)

New York. 21/5/1904. – Kansas City, Missouri. 15/12/1943.

Figlio di un decano della Chiesa Battista Abissina, la madre pianista e organista egli si è avvicinato al piano a sei anni avendo come maestro James P.Johson. Ha suonato nell’orchestra della scuola diretta da Edgard Sampson, ha vinto un concorso per dilettanti al Roseevelt Theatre ed ha ottenuto il suo primo lavoro come organista al Lincoln Theatre di New York. Nel 1922 ha fatto il suo debutto discografico, ha accompagnato Sara Martin, Alberta Hunter, Anna Jones, Hazel Meyers, Bessie Smith, ha fatto parte dei Luisiana Shugar, poi con Eddie Condon, Erskine Tate, Billy Banks, Jack Teagarden, Ted Lewis, Louis Armstrong, Bud Freeman, Fletcher Henderson e i Mc Kinney’s Cotton Pickers. Le cose migliori di Waller le ha prodotte da solo o con i suoi gruppi: And His Buddies e And His Rhythm. Richiestissimo come solista nei locali notturni di New York e nelle stazioni Radio. E’ stata una delle più pittoresche figure del jazz, uno dei più grandi pianisti, organisti e compositori ed anche cantante. Ha fatto suo il pianismo di James P.Johnson, al quale ha aggiunto un tocco di raffinatezza. Pianista dal suono pieno, ricco ed armonicamente magnifico, pieno di uno swing rilassato. E’ stato un antesignano dell’uso dell’organo e della celesta. Cantante che ha dato ad ogni interpretazione un tocco personale inconfondibile infondendo alle sue esibizioni la propria carica di umorismo. Le sue composizioni tutte di ottimo livello fanno parte stabilmente del repertorio jazzistico. A più di 50 anni dalla sua morte rimane uno dei più popolari artisti della musica in generale, avendo prodotto molta musica gradevole e serena. E’ morto al culmine del successo stroncato da un attacco cardiaco mentre viaggiava in aereo da New York a Kansas City. Con la collaborazione di Andy Razaf ha composto decine di canzoni di successo ed anche una commedia musicale “Early To Bet”. Ha inciso anche con lo pseudonimo di Maurice.

Figlio del grande “Fats”. Pianista molto meno noto del padre, ha suonato prevalentemente da solo. Si è dimostrato un discreto pianista ed anche un buon insegnante e compositore.

WALGREN JAN, EDWARD (P)

Musicista cresciuto a Stoccolma, ha iniziato a studiare giovanissimo il pianoforte sia classico che jazz. Influenzato dai grandi pianisti bop è emerso presto come uno dei giovani musicisti svedesi più preparati. Ha lasciato la musica nel 1956 per curare gli affari di famiglia. Vi è tornato nel 1960 affascinato dalla musica del compositore americano Alan Hovhaness, il cui incontro ha determinato anche il suo cambiamento e la sua attrazione verso la musica indiana e orientale e la modalità. Nella metà degli anni ’60 ha fatto parte del quartetto del trombettista Bengt Enryd, ha composto musica per gruppi di jazz in Svezia ed in Polonia. Nel 1975 insieme a Lars Westin ha fondato la compagnia discografica e l’etichetta Dragon. Ha scritto musica per il teatro, per quartetti d’archi, per balletti, un’opera “Balagantjyk”che ha ricevuto un premio a Stoccolma nel 1985.

WALLIN BENGT-ARNE (TP)

Limkoping (Svezia) 13/7/1926.

Musicista autodidatta, nel 1949 ha debuttato con Malte Johnson. Nel 1951 ha suonato con Seymour Osterwall, dal 1953 al 1955 con Arne Domnerus. In seguito si è impegnato a comporre per il cinema e la televisione. Ha inciso diversi dischi tra cui quelli con Monica Zetterlund, Arne Domnerus, Herbie Mann e Harry Arnold. Considerato il miglior trombettista, compositore ed arrangiatore dalla critica svedese.

WALLIN PER HENRIK (P)

Karlsborg, Svezia. 17/7/1946. – Svezia. 15/6/2005.

Ha iniziato in giovane età a studiare il pianoforte e nel 1970 ha deciso di fare il musicista di professione, ha accompagnato dei solisti e ha lavorato in duo con Sven-Ake Johansson, con il quale ha fatto un tour in Germania e occasionalmente ha suonato con Eje Thelin. Ha guidato un trio con il sassofonista Lars-Goran Ulander e il batterista Peter Olsen. Nel 1978 ha avuto un altro trio insieme a Torbjorn Hulterantz e Erik Dahlback. Ha continuato come solista ed in duo con la moglie, l’attrice e scrittrice Saara Salminen. Ha accompagnato anche Steve Reid e Johnny Dyani. Menomato da un incidente d’auto nel 1988 che lo ha costretto su di una sedia a rotelle, ha dovuto limitare la sua attività che ancora convalescente ha ripreso nel 1998 registrando con un trio. Nel 2003 ha ricevuto un premio che in Svezia è la variante del “Django D’Oro”. Musicista importante nel panorama jazzistico svedese d’avanguardia. Musicista dotato di una grande tecnica, di una buona inventiva improvvisativa, ha fatto gran tesoro dell’insegnamento dei grandi maestri. Non perde un’occasione per mettere in mostra la sua notevole tecnica, suonando una musica con ricche ed ampie decorazioni.

La sua famiglia è emigrata negli Stati Uniti nel 1925. Ha studiato pianoforte a nove anni ed a quindici si è esibito al Greenwich Village. Ha frequentato Max Roach, Oscar Pettiford, Don Byas e Dizzy Gillespie, ha suonato al Onyx Club nel primo gruppo bebop della storia del jazz. Ha lavorato con Joe Marsala, George Auld, Allen Eager, Red Rodney, Charlie Parker, Kai Winding, Gerry Mulligan, con Brew Moore nel 1949, con Zoot Sims nel 1952, con Lionel Hampton nel 1953. Si è fatto una ottima reputazione anche come arrangiatore e compositore. Due sue composizioni hanno tenuto a battesimo le famose sedute di Miles Davis per la Capitol ed altre sono diventate dei classici nel repertorio del secondo gregge di Woody Herman. Una delle sue registrazioni migliori è ritenuta quella in compagnia di Charles Mingus e Max Roach. Ha lasciato l’attività nel 1958 per dedicarsi ad una sua azienda di apparecchiature per condizionamento d’aria. E’ ritornato alla musica nel 1984 registrando un disco da solo e partecipando come ospite alle trasmissioni di Marian McPartland per la National Public Radio Network nel 1985. Ha registrato inoltre nella sua carriera con Serge Chaloff, Terry Gibbs, Stan Getz, Al Cohn, Gil Melle, con Tommy Talbert, Phil Woods, Bobby Jaspar, Tony Scott, Annie Ross. Lord Wallington com’era chiamato per la sua eleganza nel vestire è stato il caposcuola dei pianisti bebop. Pianista raffinato e sensibile,dall’inventiva melodica feconda.

A dodici anni ha iniziato a suonare la tromba ed a diciotto ha formato il suo primo gruppo. Trasferitosi a Londra ha suonato con Aker Bilk nel 1950, ha messo su il gruppo “Storyville Jazzmen” con i membri della “Hugh Rainey’s Storyville Band” e ha raggiunto un buon successo commerciale con il disco “Come Along Please”. Si è esibito in tutta Europa e regolarmente alla radio ed alla TV. Ha partecipato anche a dei films. Con l’avvento del rock le sue quotazioni sono calate. Ha suonato freelance in diversi gruppi anche all’estero. Ha diretto la “Pape Bue’s Viking Jazz Band” in Danimarca e la “Diz Disley Jazz Band”.Attivo ancora negli anni’80, nel 1990 essendo stato colto dal cancro è ritornato nella sua città natale e ha smesso di suonare.

Si è trasferito nel Montana dove ha iniziato a suonare la tromba nel 1955. Dal 1964 al 1968 ha studiato alla Berklee School of Music College di Boston dove ha fatto parte con altri studenti di gruppi di cantanti di rhythm and blues. Dopo essersi diplomato nel 1968 si è trasferito sulla West Coast dove ha suonato con i “Change”insieme a Gary Peacock e ai “Revival” insieme a Glenn Ferris. Ha lavorato con Louis Gasca e ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Ray Charles nel 1971, con il quale ha fatto anche in tour. Nel settembre del 1973 è andato a New York dove ha suonato con gruppi latini e dal 1974 al 1978 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Charles Mingus, dove oltre ad affermarsi come ottimo solista ha collaborato anche alle orchestrazioni. Ha collaborato con Lionel Hampton nel 1977, con Joe Morello, con Charlie Persip, con Sam Rivers, ha girato l’Europa con Dannie Richmond, ha suonato con Ricky Ford, ha fatto parte dell’orchestra inglese degli “Spirit Level”, con Richard Muhal Abrams. Ha fatto parte della Mingus Dynasty, della quale è stato direttore musicale dal 1989 al 1994 epoca del suo scioglimento. Ha diretto la Mingus Big Band nel suo concerto settimanale al Time Cafè di New York. Nel “Monk Tentet” è nelle vesti di solista, direttore e arrangiatore. Ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di George Gruntz, nel 1997 ha collaborato con Ray Anderson, ha registrato con la New York Composers Orchestra nel 1992, con Cecil Brooks III nel 1993, nel 1994 con Richie Cole e Joe Lovano e nel 1995 con Hamiet Bluiett. Ha guidato anche un suo quintetto ad Umbria Jazz del 1983, nel 1986 ha guidato i Masters of Suspense e nel 1995 ha registrato da leader con Hard Corps. WALTER LITTLE, MARION JACOBS (VC-ARM)

Marksville, Louisiana. 1/5/1930. – Chicago, Illinois. 15/2/1968.

A 12 anni ha lasciato lo studio per avvicinarsi al mondo del blues. E’ arrivato a Chicago nel 1945 ed ha iniziato ad esibirsi come chitarrista, ma la sua vocazione è l’armonica a bocca. Incontra il chitarrista Floyd James, con il quale registra per la prima volta. E’ stato uno dei primi ad amplificare l’armonica. Il 14 febbraio 1968 mentre si esibiva in un locale di Chicago è stato coinvolto in una rissa. In precedenza in altre circostanze simili aveva riportato diversi danni fisici. Quest’ultima rissa gli ha arrecato delle complicazioni che lo hanno portato alla morte. E’morto nel sonno nella casa della sua fidanzata la notte successiva. Musicista che con la sua armonica a bocca suona dei magnifici solo. Canta per lo più accompagnato da piccoli complessi di blues. Ha inciso con Sunnyland Slim, poi con Muddy Waters (1947) E’ senza dubbio il miglior solista di armonica del moderno blues di Chicago.

WALTERS ALBERT (TP)

New Orleans, Louisiana. 19/7/1905.

Musicista che ha iniziato la carriera nel 1929 e nel 1931 ha fondato insieme ad Albert Jiles i “Crescent City Serenaders”. Ha suonato con molti gruppi, in particolare nelle brass band, tra le quali quella di George Williams.

WALTERS JOHN (ST-FL-SYNT)

Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Gran Bretagna. 16/4/1953.

Nel 1972 ha fatto parte dei “Landscape. In seguito ha messo su una sua orchestra la “John Walters Band”. Ha lavorato come arrangiatore per Mick Collins, per John Williams e per Gill Lyons. Negli anni’70 ha fatto parte di nuovo dei “Landscape”, con i quali ha anche inciso.

WALTHAM THOMAS (P)

Londra, Inghilterra. 21/5/1899. – Parigi, Francia. 23/5/1974.

Nel 1916 ha fatto parte della “Original Dixieland Jazz Band”, nella sua città. Si è trasferito nel 1919 in Francia per dirigere una banda militare. In seguito insieme al trombonista Emile Christian si è stabilito a Parigi dove hanno iniziato a lavorare. Nel 1922 ha registrato i suoi primi dischi e ha messo su la sua prima orchestra la “Ad-Libs”, con la quale ha lavorato alle “Follies-Bergeres”sino al 1924 ed in diversi altri eleganti club parigini. Alla fine degli anni’20 ha raggiunto la notorietà, ha partecipato anche a diversi films. Ha iniziato ad occuparsi di composizione ed arrangiamento, ma la sua carriera è stata interrotta dalla guerra e dalla permanenza in un campo di concentramento. Alla fine della guerra ha fatto il direttore musicale per diverse case editrici.
