WALTON CEDAR, ANTHONY JUNIOR (P)
Dallas, Texas. 17/1/1934 – Brooklyn, NY, 19/8/2013.
Ha ricevuto le prime lezioni di piano dalla madre insegnante di musica e, in seguito, ha studiato dal 1951 al 1954 all’Università di Denver. Deciso ad intraprendere la carriera di musicista, si è trasferito a New York nel 1955 e ha suonato con Gigi Gryce e con Lou Donaldson. Durante il servizio militare, fatto in Germania, ha suonato con Leo Wright, Don Ellis e Eddie Harris. Dopo il servizio militare, tornato a New York ha suonato con Kenny Dorham dal 1958 al 1959, poi con John Coltrane, Abbey Lincoln, Jimmy Heath, Clifford Jordan, con Sonny Red nel 1961, con Jay Jay Johnson, nel Jazztet di Farmer e Golson. Dal 1961 al 1964 con Wayne Shorter e Freddie Hubbard, nel 1962 con i Jazz Messengers di Blakey, dove ha svolto anche il ruolo di direttore musicale ed ha registrato diversi dischi. Ha fatto un tour in Giappone con Jackie McLean. Successivamente ha ricoperto il ruolo di pianista titolare della Prestige, registrando con Teddy Edwards, Houston Pherson, Eric Kloss, Sony Criss, Pat Martino, Charlie McPherson, Milt Jackson e con un suo gruppo. Nello stesso periodo ha registrato anche con Blue Mitchell, Eddie Harris, Joe Henderson, Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Stanley Turrentine, Art Farmer. Insieme a Billy Higgins ha formato una delle coppie più richieste ed insieme hanno registrato molto anche per la Blue Note. Nel 1967 insieme a Reggie Workman e Jack DeJohnette hanno formato un trio che ha accompagnato Abbey Lincoln per un anno. Ha guidato gli Eastern Rebellion nel quale, nel corso degli anni, si sono avvicendati molti ottimi musicisti. Negli anni ’70 da freelance ha suonato con Johnny Coles, Dexter Gordon, Lucky Thompson, Joe Chambers, James Spaulding, Ray Brown, Philly Joe Jones, Hank Mobley. Nel 1975 ha fatto diverse tournée in Europa insieme al fido Higgins, San Jones e Clifford Jordan e con lui ha fatto parte dei “Timeless All Stars”. Ha inciso anche con Slide Hampton, Harold Land, Dave Barlow, Curtis Fuller, Steve Grossman, Dave Pike, Frank Morgan, James Clay, dal 1993 al 1994 ha collaborato con Charles Lloyd. Ha fatto anche esperienze nel funk e nel jazz elettrico, con i “Soundscapes” ed in seguito con il “Modern Jazz Masters”. Ancora da freelance ha registrato con David Fathead Newman, Junior Cook, Bobby Hutcherson, Woody Shaw, Don Sickler, Benny Carter, Hank Crawford, James Morrison, Red Holloway, Judy Niemack, Christopher Hollyday, Kenny Burrell, Terumasa Hino, Carmen Lundy, Rickey Woodard, Eric Alexander, Phil Woods, Johnny Griffin. Il suo successo da leader è stato un po tardivo, ma è diventato uno dei punti di riferimento per i giovani pianisti nero-americani. Egli è riuscito a riassumere il passato esponendolo in una maniera nuova. Un pianista di prima grandezza, profondo conoscitore del bop e con una grande carica di swing. Perfetto anche nel ruolo di accompagnatore ed ha anche composto molti brani diventati cavalli di battaglia per diversi jazzisti.

Ha debuttato nel 1926 con Elmer Snowden e nel 1927 ha suonato con Henry Saparo. Ha collaborato nel 1929 con Benny Carter, dal 1930 con Louis Russell sino al 1937 ed anche sotto la direzione di Louis Armstrong subentrato a Russell. Nel 1941 ha suonato con la “Vernon Andrade and his Renaissance Orchestra”, poi con Horace Henderson, come baritonista con Clarence Williams nel 1942, dal 1943 al 1945 con Cab Calloway. Diventa direttore musicale del gruppo vocale degli “Ink Spots” sino al 1947. Ha suonato poi nella “Afro Cuban Band” di Marcellino Guerra, con Noble Sissle e con Sy Oliver nel 1948. Ha iniziato in seguito l’attività freelance, ha condotto delle trasmissioni radio e televisive. Nel 1955 colpito profondamente dalla morte della moglie ha lasciato la musica.

Ha suonato con molti anonimi bluesmen texani e nel 1945 si è trasferito in California. Ha lavorato nei club e a San Francisco ha collaborato con Sidney Mayden. Nel 1949 ha iniziato a registrare, ha collaborato con Smokey Hogg ed è entrato nella grande orchestra di R&B di Big Jay McNeely. Bluesmen in possesso di una voce intensa e da una notevole abilità nell’esprimere i versi dei testi del blues californiano.
WALTON WADE (VC-G)
Lombardy, Mississippi. 10/10/1923.
Nel 1944 inizia l’attività di parrucchiere a Clarksdale e la sua bottega è diventata il ritrovo dei bluesmen della zona del Delta. Nel 1947 è entrato nei “Kings of Rhythm” di Ike Turner. Solo nel 1960 ha inciso i suoi primi dischi. Ha suonato in coppia con Frank Frost. Bluesmen profondamente rurale, dallo stile sobrio ed allegro. Chitarrista nella norma ma molto espressivo.
WAMBLE DOUG (G-VC)
Clarksville, Tennessee. 22/10/1972.
Chitarrista e cantante molto legato alla tradizione del suo Sud. Ha collaborato con Cassandra Wilson e con Wynton Marsalis nell’orchestra del Lincoln Center. Cantante dalla voce piena, ma anche delicata e abile chitarrista. La sua è una musica di riverberi e rimandi, il suo modo di esprimersi è retto da una convinzione sincera, spontanea, che rifugge le imitazioni ed i calcoli.

Ha incontrato il jazz frequentando durante il servizio militare diversi musicisti, tra i quali Nat e Julian Adderley, Junior Mance e suonando con gli stessi nella nell’orchestra militare. In seguito dopo il servizio militare ha suonato con Big Joe Turner, con Ruth Brown ed in diversi gruppi di R&B. Ha fatto parte dell’orchestra della TV di Cleveland e poi della big band intitolata a Glenn Miller, diretta da Ray McKinley. Nel 1966 ha fatto parte di uno dei greggi di Woody Herman sino al 1968. Nel 1969 è stato nell’orchestra di Count Basie, con il quale ha inciso ed ha effettuato molte tournée in tutto il mondo. Nel 1981 ha fatto parte della Capp/Pierce.

Proveniente da Seattle, nel 1962 ha iniziato a frequentare gruppi di avanguardia a New York. Durante il servizio militare in Germania ha suonato in diverse bande. Ha iniziato a suonare in Europa nel gruppo di Albert Mangelsdorff, poi con Dollar Brand, Don Cherry, con Karl Berger. Ha coltivato un ottimo rapporto con Abdullah Ibrahim con il quale ha suonato, insieme anche a Don Cherry, al Montmartre Club di Copenhagen nel 1964 e a Francoforte ha suonato con Eric Dolphy, collaborazione che ha lo ha molto influenzato. Tornato a Seattle nell’aprile del 1965 è entrato nel gruppo di John Coltrane con il quale è andato a New York e con il quale ha registrato. Ha suonato con Don Cherry, Sunny Murray, ancora con Berger, Rashied Ali, Dave Izenson, Pharoah Sanders, Cal Massey, McCoy Tyner, Paul Motian. Ha fatto parte della “Jazz Composer’s Orchestra Association”, con David Izenzon e con Alice Coltrane. Nel 1970 ha iniziato a suonare e registrare con gruppi di R&B e di funk. Lavora con Kip Hanrhan, con Carla Bley e nel 1985 ha fatto parte del quintetto cooperativo “NU”gruppo guidato da Don Cherry, con Ed Blackwell, Mark Helias e Nana Vasconcellos. Ha suonato ancora con Cherry nel 1986 al Greenwich Village e attraverso l’America centrale. Nel 1986 è entra nel gruppo di Cecil Taylor e nel 1987 ha messo su un suo quartetto composto da Charles Sullivan, Alex Blake e Ronnie Burrage. Nel 1992 ha registrato allo Yoshi a Oakland in California e ha fatto parte del gruppo di Blackwel. Nel 1994 ha registrato con Berger ed al 1994 al 1996 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra diretta da Bob Steaart. Musicista dai toni bluesy, versatile ed intelligente. Musicista d’avanguardia, legato alla corrente del post free.

Ha studiato canto sotto la direzione della madre che era la direttrice di un coro. Ha fondato gli “Ward Singers”, che è diventato uno dei più celebri cori gospel, che ha ottenuto una serie interminabile di successi in concerti in tutto il mondo. Per tre anni è stata la vedette del “New Frontier” di Las Vegas. Ha partecipato ad innumerevoli spettacoli televisivi. Il suo gruppo è molto legato alla tradizione sacra, al jubilees, alla hollines music ed ha sempre privilegiato il ritmo e la percussione alla descrizione melodica. Per esigenze di mercato negli anni ’60 ha anche esteso il repertorio alla pop music. Grande cantante solista gospel, contralto dalla voce chiara e da una grande dolcezza espressiva, fragile e appassionata. Il suo nasale moaning ed il suo melisma colorato hanno influenzato, tra i tanti, Aretha Franklin. Tra i solisti che hanno fatto parte del suo gruppo si sono messe particolarmente in luce vocaliste come Marion Williams e Frances Steadman, Kitty Parham e Henrietta Waddy che hanno dato vita in seguito al gruppo “Stars of Faith”.

Ha iniziato la carriera nel 1933 alla stazione radio WOR di New York. Ha lavorato con le orchestre di Nye Maychew, con Eddie Duchin, Will Osborne e Eric Madriguera. Con la “Roanne’s Orchestra” si è esibita alla radio in un suo show. Ha raggiunto il successo con Benny Goodman nel 1934 e nel 1936 ha interrotto la carriera per sposare un uomo molto ricco. Ha fatto poi solo delle fugaci apparizioni; con Teddy Wilson e con Joe Sullivan e nel 1942 ha fatto una tournée con Hal McIntyre. Nel 1944 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Harry James. In seguito ha prodotto e diretto degli show per la radio di New York. Classica cantante dell’era dello swing, dal ritmo stimolante. Era una bella donna ed anche una buona pianista.

Ha studiato teoria e composizione alla Montclair State University e si è laureato nel 1982. Nello stesso anno ha insegnato percussioni latino americane al William Patterson College nel Wayne, New Jersey ed ha messo un’orchestra la “AM Sleep”, con la quale ha fatto delle tournée. E’ stato membro fondatore dei “Jazz Passengers”nel 1987 con il quale ha fatto dei tour ed ha registrato. Ha continuato a lavorare a New York con il suo gruppo ed ha fatto anche parte dei “Groove Collective”gruppo di acid jazz. ha anche collaborato con il gruppo pop di Steely Dan. Musicista che persegue il moderno mainstream e che ha ben presente i valori del jazz degli anni’40 e le sue forme di improvvisazione e soprattutto il suo swing, anche se ha sempre molta simpatia per la musica latino americana. Il suo maggior pregio come solista è il suo sound morbido, ricco di sfumature e accattivante
