JARRETT KEITH (P)
Allentown, Pennsylvania. 8 / 5 / 1945.
Ha iniziato a prendere le prime lezioni di piano all’età di tre anni e ha dato il suo primo concerto a sette anni. Ha iniziato a suonare professionalmente già frequentando le scuole e durante l’adolescenza ha suonato come solista nei Fred Warings’ Pennsylvanians. A Boston ha ottenuto una borsa di studio per studiare al Berklee School, suonando attivamente con un suo trio nell’area di Boston. Alla fine del 1964 si trasferisce a New York, dove ha iniziato a lavorare con Tony Scott e con Roland Kirk. Viene notato da Art Blakey, durante una jam session al Village Vanguard, e viene invitato a partecipare nei Jazz Messengers. Ha raggiunto la celebrità con il quartetto di Charles Lloyd, con il quale ha collaborato dal 1966 al 1969 ed ha fatto molte tournée, tra le quali una nel 1967 in Russia. Lasciato Lloyd ha messo su un suo trio con il quale ha girato l’Europa. Dal giugno 1970 al dicembre del 1971 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Miles Davis, poi ha suonato l’organo elettrico con Chick Corea, continuando ad avere il suo trio, anche con Charlie Haden e Paul Motian, poi un quartetto con Dewey Redman. Ha collaborato con Gary Burton e Jack DeJohnette, con Freddie Hubbard. Ha incontrato Manfred Eicher, proprietario della casa discografica l’ECM, con la quale ha registrato copiosamente. Nel 1972 ha iniziato a dare concerti da solo, con improvvisazioni che durano anche 30 e 45 minuti, su musica che spazia in diversi campi musicali. Dal 1974 al 1979 ha ottenuto molto successo con un quartetto europeo, insieme a Jan Garbareck, Palle Danielsson e Jon Christensen. In seguito ha messo su un trio con Gary Peacock e Jack DeJohnette, il Trio Standards, con il quale va in giro per il mondo ancora oggi. Pianista dalla tecnica notevole e dalla grande creatività melodica. Le sue travolgenti improvvisazioni sono un viaggio nel classico di Debussy, nel gospel, nel boogie woogie, nella liturgia medievale, nell’esotismo arabo e anche in certe occasioni in un romanticismo lezioso. Musicista molto discusso, egli occupa nella storia del jazz un posto di rilievo, soprattutto per la qualità della sua esecuzione musicale. Egli riesce a creare un flusso di musica impetuosa e affascinante. E’ stato anche detto di lui “il livello della sua ispirazione non è spiegabile a parole”.

Ha iniziato a studiare la batteria a 10 anni, dal 1953 al 1958. Ha studiato alla Berklee School of Music dove ha avuto come maestro Alan Dawson. Trasferitosi a New York ha debuttato con il gruppo di Randy Weston, poi con Barry Harris, Yusef Lateef, Roland Kirk, Grant Green, Jaki Byard e Sam Rivers. Ha incontrato Sun Ra e con lui ha avuto una lunga collaborazione ed è stato con lui in diverse manifestazioni internazionali . Nel 1970 è entrato nel gruppo di Pharoah Sanders con il quale ha inciso anche qualche album. Ha suonato inoltre con Alice Coltrane, Archie Sheepp, Frank Lowe, Jimmy Garrison, con Clifford Thornton, Huey Simmons, ha inciso in Steve Gadd ed in in duo con Johnny Dyani. Ha insegnato musica in diversi college e all’Università del Massachusetts. Ha collaborato inoltre con Chet Baker, Coleman Hawkins, Eddie Davis, Johnny Griffin, Sonny Stitt, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Michel Marre. Musicista di scuola free jazz del gruppo storico.

JARVIS JANE (P)
Vincennes, Indiana. 31 / 10 / 1915. – Coca Beach, Florida, 25 / 1 / 2010.
Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a cinque anni e a dieci anni ha frequetato l’Università della sua città. Si è esibita a nove anni alla stazione radio WJKS di Gary, sempre in Indiana, dove si era trasferita con la famiglia. Ha studiato anche a Chicago al Bush Conservatory dal 1929 al 1930, al Chicago Conservatory ed alla Depaul University dal 1935 al 1937. Nel 1938 ha guidato un quintetto insieme a Johnny Bothwell. Nel 1945 si è trasferita a Milwaukee dove ha lavorato in televisione con la WTMJ, ha suonato con Eddie South ed è stata l’organista della MIlwaukee Breaves, una squadra di baseball, dal 1954 al 1962. Lo stesso anno ha lavorato a New York con la Muzak Corporation, sino al 1979. Dal 1978 ha deciso di lavorare nel jazz ed ha collaborato con Helen Humes, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, in duo con Milt Hinton, nel 1985 ha partecipato con successo al Festival del Jazz di Edimburgo e con Lionel Hanpton a quello di Mosca. Nel 1995 ha inaugurato il Jane Jarvis Jazz Invitational di Tampa, in Florida. Ha guidato un suo trio con Jay Leonhart e Grady Tate. Ha fatto anche parte dei “Statesmen Of Jazz”, con il quale ha registrato e fatto dei tour internazionali. Dal 1998 risiede a Zinno, a New York, dove ha guidato un trio con Benny Powell e Earl May. Ha ricevuto anche una laurea ad honorem dalla Università di Vincennes.

Il primo impegno serio al basso acustico lo ha avuto con il gruppo di Michel Urbaniak dal 1970 al 1972. In seguito ha adottato il basso elettrico, che ha suonato con Zbignew Namyslowski nel 1973. E’ tornato co Urbaniack per fare con lui una tournée europea e negli Usa, dove ha preso anche al Newport Jazz Festival di New York. Tornato il patria ha suonato con Namylowski e si è esibito al Festival di Cascais in Portogallo nel 1974. Ha fatto parte del gruppo cooperativo “Quartet” insieme a Tomasz Szukalski, Slawomir Kulpowicz e Janusz Stefanski. Ha registrato anche come leader.
