Broussard, Louisiana. 30/10/1922. – New York. 22/7/2004.
In famiglia, suo parte era contrabassista. Ha studiato in California e, durante gli studi, ha iniziato a suonare la batteria, poi il sax alto ed infine si è dedicato al sax tenore con il quale ha debuttato in un gruppo locale, quello di Lionel Proctor. Ha suonato anche con Bob Cooper e con Milton Larkins, tutte orchestre di rhythm and blues. Nel 1941 ha suonato con Floyd Ray, poi è entrato nell’orchestra di Lionel Hampton e, con il suo intervento spettacolare di Flying Home, è arrivato il successo e la fama nel 1942. L’anno dopo ha suonato con Cab Colloway e, dal 1945 al 1946, con Count Basie. Dopo varie tournée con la JATP ha messo su una sua orchestra che ha avuto molto successo, nelle cui file si sono alternati grandissimi solisti, tra i quali Miles Davis. Ha inciso anche con Nat King Cole, ha suonato in trio con Milton Buckner e con Wild Bill Davis. Ha preso parte al film “Jammin’ The Blues”. Nel 1984 ha messo su i ”Texas Tenor” con Buddy Tate e Arnett Cobb ed poi i ”Jazz Legend” una poderosa orchestra che ha diretto sino al 1987. Nel 1994 si è esibito con la sua orchestra al Tavern On The Green, locale al centro di Central Park a New York. Sassofonista dal suono ampio e possente, una via di mezzo tra la sonorità di Coleman Hawkins e quella di Lester Young. Tenore molto stimolante, dotato di un mordente e di una potenza straordinaria uniti ad una gran classe, che gli fanno perdonare certe sue sortite spettacolari nelle esibizioni pubbliche. Ha anticipato sassofonisti d’oggi nel tirare fuori dal sax delle note altissime, quasi dei sibili. Musicista sempre profondamente legato al blues, molto vicino alla sensibilità del rhythm and blues e pieno di swing come costume della scuola texana. Interprete delle ballad molto classico e sensibile. Nel 1965 ha inciso dei dischi esibendosi al fagotto. Ha inciso anche sotto lo pseudonimo di Jacque Rabbitt.

Fratello Maggiore di Illinois. Ha iniziato la carriera nell’orchestra di Alvino Ray nel 1939, ha suonato poi con la California Playboy Band dal 1934 al 1937, insieme al fratello Illinois e all’altro fratello Linton batterista. Ha suonato poi nell’orchestra di Floyd Ray dal 1939 al 1940. Ha studiato per quattro anni al Wiley College ed alla Southern University e nel 1944 ha messo su una sua orchestra. Dopo aver sciolto l’orchestra si è trasferito in California dove ha lavorato con il fratello, con il quale ha fatto anche una tournée in Europa. Ha lavorato per poco tempo al Cotton Club di Hollywood. In seguito ha deciso di riprendere la sua vera vocazione che è quella di cantante di blues con l’orchestra di Gerald Wilson. Ha lavorato poi con Benny Carter, con Arnette Cob dal 1959 al 1966 e con Cedric Haywood. Ha suonato nel 1966 ad Huston di nuovo con Arnette Cobb. Musicista mediocre ma ottimo cantante di blues.

Ha esordito in campo internazionale alla collaborazione con Attila Zoller e Albert Mangelsdorff, interratta solo dalla sua partecipazione al gruppo “Jazz Quintet’60”nel 1959. In seguito ha fatto parte del “Danish Radiojazzgruppen” e della “Radioens Big Band” dal 1965 al 1966. Ha anche collaborato con Gunther Schuller, nel 1969 ha suonato con Horace Parlan ed ha diretto un suo quintetto con Richard Boone. Dal 1976 al 1988 è tornato con la “Radioens Big Band”, ha collaborato con l’Eclipse di Thad Jones e la big band di Ernie Wilkins. Ha anche collaborato con il “Saxmaniacs And A-Team”, ha diretto un suo trio, con Bent Axen, Duke Jordan, Red Rodney, Finn Savery ed altri.

Ha impara a suonare la chitarra a tredici anni ed in seguito affascinato dal jazz è diventato alunno di Jim Hall. Ha studiato teoria e storia della musica alla Yale University. Ha conosciuto Anthony Davis con il quale ha fondato il gruppo ”Sweet Rain”. Ha suonato con Mark Helias e Gerry Hemingway. In seguito ha avuto un periodo poco brillante, nel quale ha lavorato in spettacoli di varietà e festini vari. Tornato in auge, si è laureato nel 1972, si è sposato con una francese e si è apostato a Parigi. Nel 1975 è tornato negli States a New York, ha registrato con con James Newton, ha fatto una tournée europea con Ray Anderson, è membro fondatore del gruppo copperatiova gli ”Slickaphonics”, ha suonato nel 1984 con John Lindberg, con il gruppo di jazz-rock di Bobby Previte, nel 1990 ha fatto un’altra tournée con J.B.Horns, sotto la direzione di Maceo Parker e Fred Wesley, ha anche suonato in duo con il violinista canadese Terry Kane e nella I. O. Creative.

JAFFE ALLAN, PHILLIPS (TUBA)
Pottsville, Pennsylvania. 24/4/1935. – New Orleans, Louisiana. 9/3/1987.
E’ nato in una famiglia di musicisti, il nonno ha suonato il corno francese nella Russian Imperial Army, mentre il padre è insegnante di mandolino. Egli ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte all’età di cinque anni, ha studiato poi la cornetta ed il basso tuba mentre frequenta la scuola. Sceglie la carriera militare ed è ufficiale di stanza a Fort Polk in Luisiana. Qui ha continuato a coltivare la sua passione per il jazz, vista la breve distanza che lo separava dalla culla del jazz New Orleans. Nel 1961 ha lasciato il servizio militare per dedicarsi alla musica a tempo pieno, si trasferisce a New Orleans insieme alla moglie e qui ha conosciuto diversi musicisti. Entra nella Eureka Brass band, diventa proprietario della Preservation Hall e la ha fatta diventare il tempio del jazz della città. E’ stato anche organizzatore di concerti e di tournée ed anche produttore di dischi. Nel 1980 è stato cofondatore del gruppo “Slickaphonics”.
JAFFE ANDY (P)
Washington DC.16/11/1951.
Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a otto anni, quindi il clarinetto che ha anche suonato in piccoli gruppi di giovani a Monroe, vicino New York, dove la famiglia si è trasferita nel 1957. Nel 1965 altro trasferimento a Amherst nel Massachussetts, dove si è diplomato alla Regional High School. Nel 1973 si è laureato in scienze politiche alla St.Lowrence University. Per un breve periodo ha studiato pianoforte a Parigi e dal 1974 al 1975 ha frequentato il Berklee College of Music di Boston ed ha studiato privatamente composizione. Dal 1986 al 1992 ha diretto una big band insieme a Bill Lowe. Ha insegnato alla Berklee, all’Università del Massachussetts ed in molte altre famose scuole di jazz. E’ stato direttore artistico per il teatro, ha lavorato nel cinema e per il balletto. E’ stato un musicista poco conosciuto in Europa. Pianista che si ispira ad Horace Silver, quindi dall’impianto strutturale in linea con l’hard bop. Compositore dal profondo senso del blues.

Ha completato la sua educazione musicale a Berlino dove si è trasferito con la famiglia. Nel 1932 è ritornato in America dove ha avuto il primo ingaggio importante, accompagnando il cantante Dick Robertson nel 1938. Ha suonato poi con Joe Marsala, ha inciso con le Andrews Sisters, con Louis Armstrong, Charlie Barnet e nel 1939 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Jack Teagarden. Ha suonato anche con Jan Savitt, poi con piccoli gruppi e nel frequentare la 52a strada, ha inciso insieme a Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker e Sarah Vaughan nel 1945. Ha accompagnato anche Billie Holiday. Egli si è fatto la fama di ottimo accompagnatore in particolare dei cantanti. Musicista attento alle novità, ai nuovi stili moderni, purtroppo ha avuto una breve carriera, stroncata da morte prematura.

Sezioni di improvvisazione libera nate in locali o nei concerti, alle quali hanno partecipato molto spesso anche musicisti di varie estrazioni musicali e stilistiche. Sono rimaste famose quelle del Minton’s Playhouse di New York, dove confluivano i musicisti che avevano finito di lavorare nei vari locali e nelle quali è stato definito il nuovo modo di suonare il jazz, il jazz moderno o il bebop ad opera di musicisti capeggiati da Thelonious Monk e Kenny Clarke.
