KRUPA GENE. (DR)

Chicago, Illinois. 15/1/1909. – Yonkers, New York. 16/9/1973.

Si è messo in mostra nel 1927 incidendo con McKenzie ed i suoi Chicagoans. Ha lavorato in orchestrine commerciali nei vari teatri. Nel 1928 ha avuto il suo debutto ufficiale nell’orchestra diretta da Joe Kaiser e poi nel 1929 con quella di Red Nichols. Nel 1934 è stato ingaggiato da Benny Goodman con il quale ha collaborato prevalentemente nei piccoli gruppi e con lui ha lavorato sino al 1938, avendo contemporaneamente altre collaborazioni, con Irving Aaronson nel 1930, con Thelma Terry, Frank Teschemacher, Joe Sullivan, Bix Beiderbecke, Adrian Rollini, Red McKenzie, Bud Freeman, Red Nichols, Buddy Rogers, i Louisiana Rhythm Kings, con Russ Colombo nel 1931, glin Original Menphis Five, con Buddy Rogers nel 1933. Ma è stata la collaborazione con Goodman che gli ha afto raggiungere la celebrità e con il quale ha eseguito forse il primo assolo di batteria della storia del jazz. Dal 1938 dopo aver lasciato Goodman ha messo su una propria orchestra, nella quale ha utilizzato ottimi musicisti, tra i quali Roy Eldridge ed ha usufruito di famosi arrangiatori, come Jimmy Mundy e Gerry Mulligan. Salvo una parentesi dovuta a problemi con la giustizia per via dell’uso di stupefacenti, periodo nel quale torna a lavorare con Goodman e va in tourneè con l’orchestra di Tommy Dorsey, è tornato in auge con un’altra sua orchestram che ha diretto sino al 1951. Inoltre ha preso parte a varie tounrée con la JATP, ha collaborato con Dave McKenna, con Charlie Ventura, insieme a Cozy Cole ha aperto una scuola per batteristi a New York, che ha avuto molto successo. Ha preso parte a due film: ”The Benny Goodman Story” e “The Gene Krupa Story”e dal 1963 al 1967 ha diretto l’orchestra ufficiale di Disneyland. Negli ultimi anni si è dedicato all’insegnamento, ha studiato nuove tecniche percussionistiche sia classiche che etniche e ha pubblicato un famoso manuale per batteristi. E’ indicato come uno dei maggiori esponenti della batteria della sua epoca ed ha insegnanto qualcosa anche alle generazioni che sono venute dopo. Batterista i cui punti di riferimento sono stati Baby Dodds, Zutty Singleton ed il grande Chick Webb. Solista dal virtuosismo spettacolare, esuberante, potente. Con la sua spinta ritmica inesauribile ha dato slancio a tutti quelli cha ha accompagnato. Per la sua tecnica è stato senz’altro il più grande dell’era dello swing ed è stato superato solo dal nuovo batterismo moderno. Ha registrato spesso sotto lo pseudonimo di Chicago Flash. Gli si può addebitare sono di un eccesso di esibizionismo tecnico.

Ha fatto parte anche dei Buellgrass dal 1981 al 1994 e del Buell Neidlinger Quartet. Ha lavorato nell’area di Los Angeles con il gruppo di Jaco Pastorius, con la Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra. Ha anche lavorato negli studi cinematografici e nella pop music. Ha insegnato al California Institute of the Arts, al Mount Saint Maryìs College ed la Conservatorio di Rotterdam, in Olanda. Ha suonato in Europa, con Steve Lacy al Festival di Ravenna in Italia. chiusura
