Emigrato negli Stati Uniti con la famiglia, nel 1910, si è stabilito a Chicago dove ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte alla Hull House all’età di sei anni. Ancora adolescente ha iniziato a lavorare nelle feste e nei matrimoni. Ha debuttato professionalmente nei Volverines nel 1925, ha poi suonato con Vingy Manone nel 1927. Attraverso Manone ha incontrato Louis Armstrong del quale è diventato molto amico. Ha scelto di seguire lo stile della Chicago Blues e i pianisti di Bolgie e presto ha acquisito uno stile tutto personale. Il clarinettista Kenny Davern lo ha definito “An American Original”. Ha suonato con Bud Freeman, Gene Krupa, Muggsy Spanier, Floyd O’Brien, Floyd Townes, Frank Snyder, Albert Nicholas, Milt Hinton, Max Kaminsky, Rod Cless, Vick Dickenson, Edmond Hall, Omer Simeon e Danny Alvin. Nel 1938 si è trasferito a New York, dove ha suonato con Joe Marsala nel 1939, con Mezz Mezzrow nel 1940, nello stesso anno ha sottoscritto un contratto con la Blue Note. Per un certo periodo ha lavorato come disc-jokey, nel 1943 ha pubblicato la rivista Jazz Record. Ha registrato diversi dischi con Sidney Bechet, ha suonato anche con Tony Parenti. In seguito si è esibito come solista o con piccoli gruppi nei migliori locali newyorkesi. Musicista bianco legato alla tradizione di New Orleans di cui è senz’altro un esponente, stilisticamente vicino a Hines.

Musicista autodidatta, ha debuttato come sopranista nell’orchestra di Bobby Sawyer. Ha suonato ancora il sax soprano con i gruppi di Lloyd Scott, Andy Kirk e Willie The Lion Smith. Nel 1923 ha suonato con Sidney Bechet, che è diventato il suo modello stilistico e dal quale ha ricevuto anche qualche lezione di musica. E’ passato al sax alto, si dice perché pensava di non poter competere come sopranista proprio con Bechet. Ha suonato con l’orchestra di Chick Webb, con Luckey Roberts nel 1927, nel 1928 è stato notato da Duke Ellington che lo ha voluto immediatamente nella sua orchestra per rimpiazzare Otto Hardwick. Con Duke Ellington ha instaurato un rapporto di collaborazione quasi ininterrotto, sino alla fine della sua vita, salvo qualche sortita in incisioni per accompagnare Billy Holiday nel 1936, poi con l’orchestra di Teddy Wilson e quella di Lionel Hampton nel 1937. Ha suonato anche nell’orchestra di Earl Hines ed ha partecipato al famoso concerto alla Carnegie Hall di Benny Goodman del 1938. Ha inciso anche con Shelly Manne e Gerry Mulligan. Nel 1951 al 1955 ha diretto un suo gruppo, nel quale ha avuto anche una breve collaborazione del giovane Coltrane. Rabbit è stato uno dei soprannomi di Hodges, dovuto alla sua passione per i panini con lattuga e pomodoro, l’altro è stato Jeep forse per la sua indolenza. E’ stata una delle voci di Ellington. Molte celebri ballad il maestro le ha scritte apposta per lui e forse non sarebbero diventate tanto famose senza la sua voce. Una degli esempi è stata “I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart”. Musicista dalla forte personalità e dallo stile inconfondibile oltre che maestro del suo strumento. Uno dei tre massimi altisti della storia del Jazz. Dalla voce sensuale, fluido, con il suo timbro era impareggiabile ed è stato uno dei più riconoscibili. Dal senso del ritmo potente ed insieme raffinato, l’Hodges sound pieno di sentimentalismo ed intriso di blues. Uomo detestabile dal carattere urtante, poco portato al cameratismo molto comune tra i musicisti di Jazz. Ha inciso anche sotto lo pseudonimo di John Harvey. Nonostante i medici gli avessero sconsigliato da tempo di non suonare egli aveva continuato ed è morto sulla poltrona del dentista.

Si è laureato nel 1930 all’Università del North Carolina a Chapel Hill in ingegneria. Si è trasferito primo nell’Illinois e dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale ha fatto l’ingegnere a Chicago. Ha iniziato ad avere dell’interesse per il jazz, ha ascoltato molti dischi e dal 1935 al 1960 ha scritto periodicamente sul Down Beat un articolo intitolato “The Hot Box”,che contiene importanti informazioni discografiche e biografiche sui musicisti di jazz. Dalla metà degli anni ’40 ha scritto anche per l’Esquire’s Jazz Book. Nel 1951 si è trasferito a New York dove ha collaborato con il Metronome, Jazz ed il Melody Maker. Dal 1958 al 1961 è stato anche editore del Down Beat. E’ stato uno dei più illustri nomi della critica jazz americani. Ha redatto articoli molto accurati e molto ricchi di dettagli importanti.

Nato a Philadelphia nel 1973, Hoenig ha cominciato a studiare gli strumenti musicali da bambino, spinto dai suoi genitori, entrambi musicisti. Hoenig ha iniziato al pianoforte e violino, ma ben presto ha indirizzato i suoi prevalenti interessi verso la batteria. Hoenig ha iniziato a suonare jazz quando era al liceo per poi frequentare jazz clubs di Philadelphia. Dopo il liceo, Hoenig ha frequentato la University of North Texas, dove ha studiato con il batterista Ed Soph. Dopo tre anni presso l’Università del North Texas, è tornato sulla East Coast e ha continuato la sua formazione al William Patterson College nel nord del New Jersey. Negli anni ’90 ha accompagnato pianisti come Jean-Michel Pilc e Kenny Werner.

Emigrato negli Stati Uniti a sei anni con la famiglia, si è stabilito a Seattle, Washington e qui ha studiato musica ed ancora giovane ha suonato la batteria e messo su un’orchestra. Nel 1928 si è trasferito a New York dove ha ottenuto il suo primo successo da compositore con la canzone “Heartaches”nel 1930. Dopo alcuni anni trascorsi in Inghilterra, è tornato negli USA dove ha svolto una fortunata attività nel campo della musica cinematografica. Tra le altre la colonna sonora di “Cinderella”di Disney. Dal 1984 è nella Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

Nel 1950 ha registrato con Attila Zoller il bassista Johnny Fisher ed il batterista Rudi Sehring. Ha inciso anche con Renè Thomas, Pierre Cavallio, Wolker Kriegel. La sua collaborazione più importante l’ha avuta con Klaus Doldinger, con il quale ha fatto diverse tournée ed ha collaborato dal 1963 al 1969. Ha anche registrato insieme a Karin Krog nel 1967, ha suonato con Lucky Thompson, con Rolph Kuhn. Ha preso parte a molti importanti Festival in tutto il mondo.

Ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte e la chitarra ed ha studiato alla Università di Oslo dal 1982 al 1984 e sino al 1986 alla Accademia di Stato Norvegese per la Musica. Ha iniziato a farsi conoscere in campo internazionale quando ha sostituito MIchael Brecker nei Steps Ahead, con i quali ha suonato per sei anni, facendo molte tournée e registrando diversi album. Nel 1990 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Arild Andersen. Ha lavorato freelance con John McLaughlin, con Tony Levin, con Andy Summers. E’ stato il primo sassofono nella Oslo Philarmonic Orchestra. Il suo ispiratore più importante è il connazionale Jan Garbarek, del quale cerca di imitare anche il timbro strumentale. Nella sua musica vi è un misto di jazz e di musica folk del nord Europa.

Musicista autodidatta, ha lavorato con Phillip Johnston nel Microscopic Septet, nel Trasparent Quartet, nel Big Trouble e con il sassofonista David Sewelson nel 1977. Ha accompagnato il cantante Robin Holcomb nel 1978, poi ha collaborato con John Zorn dal 1978 al 1993, con Joel Forrester. Ha fatto parte del Little Huye Creative Music orchestra di William Parker, insieme a Lou Grassi, Tennis Charles, Eliot Sharp e Paul Shapiro. Ha anche suonato con Bobby Previte, Wayme Horvitz, Saheb Sarbib, Bobby Radcliff, Jemeel Moondoc, Marie McAuliffe, Rachelle Garniez, Clare Daly. Oltre al contrabbasso tradizionale, suona anche quello elettrico e la tuba.

Ha iniziato a suonare il sassofono e poi finite le scuole ha suonato la batteria in piccoli gruppi di thythm-and-blues, tra le quali la più importante quella di Earl Bostic dal 1953 al 1955. Lo stesso anno arriva a New York dove ha accompagnato Randy Weston ed ha registrato con Kenny Drew e Kenny Dorham. E’ entrato nel gruppo di Charles Mingus, poi è andato a Parigi dove ha suonato con Bud Powell ed ha partecipato al film del 1961 “Splendor In The Grass”. In seguito ha suonato con Walter Bishop Jr., nel 1963 con Elmo Hope. Tornato negli Stati Uniti ha lavorato nell’area Los Angeles e nel 1977 è tornato a Huston dove ha svolto altre attività. Ha suonato raramente dirigendo dei piccoli gruppi, nel 1991 ha suonato con Dizzy Gillespie, nel 1993 ha partecipato al Festival del Jazz di Houston. Batterista che ha avuto una vita disordinata ed errabonda sia sociale che musicale. Ha anche registrato Tommy Flanagan, con Curtis Fuller. I suoi punti di riferimento sono stati Kenny Clarke, Max Roach e Philly Joe Jones.

Ha iniziato a suonare nelle orchestre teatrali. Ha accompagnato in tournée in Grand Bretagna la cantante Rosemary Clooney, Budd Johnson e Teddy Wilson nel 1974. Ha fatto parte del gruppo di Tony Coe e di quello di Colin Purbrook. Dal 1977 ha lavorato al Pizza Express di Londra con Dave McKenna, con Sir Charles Thompson e Joe Albany. In seguito ha registrato spesso con Danny Moss. Ha lavorato ed insegnato freelance, ha fatto parte dei Digby Fairweather’s Friends ed in seguito nel 1987 ha lasciato l’attività.

Il suo maestro di chitarra è stato il padre. Ancora adolescente in coppia con un amico Black Ace ha girato per le sale da ballo dell’area texana. Nel 1937 sono andati a Chicago, dove hanno registrato per la Decca Records. Cantante e chitarrista della vera e sincera tradizione texana del blues. Ispiratosi a Big Bill Broonzy, ha continuato ha lavorare e registrare con successo, per tutti gli anni ’40 e sino alla fine degli anni ’50. Nel suo modo di esprimersi miscela degli originali spunti rurali con accenni a quelli urbani.

Ha studiato il pianoforte con la madre e a 16 anni ha scelto il vibrafono come suo strumento. Ha studiato etnomusica alla Wesleyan University di Middelton nel Connecticut, dove ha frequentato i corsi di Clifford Thornton. Ha debuttato professionalmente con Sam Rivers e Jimmy Garrison. Nel 1974 si è recato in Tanzania per studiarne la musica, ed in particolare il balafon, strumento titpico dell’Africa orientale. Nel 1977 é tornato a New York dove ha suonato con Chico Freeman, Anthony Davis, James Newton, Michael Gregory Jackson, Cecyl Taylor, l’Art Ensemble of Chicago, Ahmed Abdullah, Muhal R. Abrams e Henry Threadgill. Ha diretto piccoli gruppi con i quali ha suonato musica commerciale, ottenendo un certo successo. Ha accompagnato Roberta Flack, Candi Staton e McCoy Tyner. Vibrafonista di grande talento. Nel suo stile c’è la perfetta combinazione delle diverse tendenze. Pur suonando libero è padrone della tradizione dello strumento stesso. Improvvisatore straordinario, peccato che goda fama di amare molto il denaro e quindi scende spesso a compromessi.

Termine dai diversi significati : non sincero, senza senso. In seguito è stato utilizzato per indicare un genere di canzoni comiche, parodistiche molto di moda alla fine degli anni Venti. Fra i maggiori esponenti di questo stile ricordiamo l’Hockum Jug Band di Tampa Red che ha registrato fra il 1928 ed il 1930. Gli Hokum Boys (1930) di questo gruppo facevano parte Georgia Tom, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Blake ecc.
HOLCOMB ROBIN (P-VC)

Nata in una famiglia povera, sin da bambina ha lavorato nelle piantagioni di cotone del North Carolina. Anni dopo ha frequentato l’Università di Santa Cruz in California dove ha conosciuto il furto marito Wayne Horwitz. Negli anni ’70 insieme al marito si sono trasferiti a New York, dove sono stati al centro nell’ambiente del jazz d’avanguardia. Musicista che ha attinto copiosamente nel blues e nel gospel. Solista dalla personalità complessa. Fa parte del gruppo di musicisti newyorkesi che ama scomporre le forme classiche del jazz e del rock, unendole ad altra musica, quella di Richard Teitelbaun e non tralasciando l’eredità di Feldman. Jazz al femminile dalla sofisticata compiutezza e dalla personalità nuova e complessa. Ha diretto con il marito la New York Composer’s Orchestra.

Ha iniziato a suonare nella sua città con Alphonso Trent nel 1922, sempre con Trent ha lavorato al Adolphus Hotel di Dallas nel 1925. Poi nel 1926 ha messo sù i Dark Clouds of Joy un gruppo cooperativo, che in seguito ha lasciato per organizzare i Twelve Clouds Of Joy. Ha suonato con i Blue Devils di Walter Page a Oklahoma City, con Herschel Evans, con Earl Bostic nel 1930, con Carl Smith nel 1931, con Lloyd Glenn, con Buddy Tate sino al 1933. Ha sospeso l’attività negli anni della depressione ed ha ripreso a suonare nel Montana negli anni ’40. In seguito ha lavorato molto di rado, nel 1953 ha fatto un tour con Nat Towles nel Midwest, con Jay McShann a Joplin nel Missouri e nel 1976 si è ritirato a vita privata a Muskogee. Musicista leggendario ispiratosi alle trombe di New Orleans, purtoppo non esistono sue incisioni.
HOLDSWORTH ALLAN (G-SYNT)
Leeds,Yorkshire, Gran Bretagna. 6/8/1946.
Ha ricevuto lezioni di chitarra all’età di dieci anni dal nonno e di jazz dal pianista Sam Holdsworth. Nel 1972 ha esordito registrando con il gruppo Nucleus di Ian Carr. In seguito ha fatto parte dei “Colosseum” di Jon Hisemann dal 1972 al novembre del 1973. Poi dei gruppi “Tempest”, i “Soft Machine” e i “Gong”. Ha lavorato in USA con i “Liftime” di Tony Williams, poi con Jean Luc Ponty, con il gruppo fusion di Bill Bruford dal 1978 al 1980, ha fatto parte dei Spontaneous Music Ensemble. Ha registrato con Jeff Clybne. Trasferitosi in California si è immerso in un impegno più jazzistico, l’unico ostacolo è per lui liberarsi dell’uso eccessivo della chitarra sintetizzata e di quel eccesso di virtuosismo che gli viene dalle passate frequentazioni.
