Detroit, Michigan. 10/2/1932. – Harris, New York, 13/11/2002.
Il titoto di “Sir” gli è stato conferito nel 1970 dal governo della Liberia per il suo impegno nella raccolta di fondi a favore dei bambino africani. Ha dimostrato sin da piccolo amore per il pianoforte, ha studiato alla Eastman School di Rochester ed alla Julliard School di New York. Nella sua carriera ha collaborato nei contesti più differenti, con Benny Goodman nel 1958, con Charles Mingus nel 1959, dal 1967 al 1974 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra Jones/Lewis, del New York Jazz Quartet. Ha registrato inoltre con Kenny Burrell, Elvin Jones, Eddie Daniels, Freddy Hubbard, Richard Davis, Nathan Davis, Ron Carter. Ha fatto parte del gruppo di Red Rodney nel 1979, della Mingus Dinasty. Altre collaborazioni con Pepper Adams, Jim Hall, Jimmy Knepper, Woody Herman, Buddy De Franco, Stephane Grappelli, Louis Smith, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Arnett Cobb, ha accompagnato Sarah Vaughan nel 1982, P. Horton, Mercer Ellington e ha fatto parte della Center Jazz Orchestra. Ha preso parte al film di Clint Eastwood “Bird” nel 1988. Ha insegnato per vari anni al Queens College ed è stato anche un buon compositore. Pianista molto vivace, espertissimo nel repertorio classico, dalla grande compostezza e dalla sonorità limpida.

Di padre irlandese e di madre russa, scultore e uomo di cinema ha iniziato a fare musica più come cineasta che come musicista. Ha iniziato a maneggiare le percussioni a nove anni e da adolescente ha suonato in gruppi latini e con Carla Bley. Ha frequentato la Cooper Union di New York, ed è andato anche a studiare in diverse parti del mondo. Nel 1979 ha fondato la casa discografica con l’etichetta “American Clavè”. Nel 1984 ha messo su il gruppo “Conjure” nelle cui performance ha usato anche le liriche del poeta Ishmael Reed. Ha collaborato con Olu Dara, Lester Bowie, David Murray, Don Pullen, D.D.Jackson, Kenny Kirkland, Billy Bang, Jean-Paul Bourelly, Steve Swallow, Anthony Cox, Jamalaadeen Tacuma, Andy Gonzales, Jack Bruce, Billy Hart, Ignacio Berroa, Little Jimmy Scott, Milton Cardona e molti altri. Egli ha voluto trattare i suoni come nel cinema ha trattato le luci. Ha messo insieme gruppi eterogenei con una musica nella quale coabitano jazz, rock e ritmi latini, impiegando anche ottimi musicisti. Personaggio controverso sul quale i giudizi dei critici sono stati molto discordanti. Per una parte degli stessi ci troviamo difronte ad un abile o in qualche giudizio geniale regista di suoni, per altri invece è giudicato un bluff.

Ha iniziato la carriera nell’orchestra della radio danese e ha diretto anche un suo trio insieme al bassista Hugo Rasmunsen ed al batterista Bjarne Rostvold. Nel 1969 è entrato nel gruppo di Finn Zuegler con il quale ha partecipato al Festival Jazz di Montreux. Nel 1975 ha fondato un suo quartetto con il chitarrista Ole Molin, il bassista Mads Vindin ed il batterista Lenart Gruvsted. Ha avuto modo di accompagnare durante le frequenti visite in Danimarca molti musicisti celebri come: Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Toots Thielemans, Putte Wickman, Lee Konitz ed altri. Ha anche lavorato proficuamente come arrangiatore.

E’ considerata la prima cantante di jazz al femminile, tanto che nel 1920 è stata paragonata a Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith e le Boswell Sisters. Cantante attiva a New York, dalla stile molto versatile, garbato e personale. Ha avuto una carriera molto breve, ma abbastanza prolifica dal punto di vista discografico. Interprete delicatamente emotiva, molto aggraziata ed accattivante, in possesso di una equilibrata tavolozza timbrica, con spunti di voce di testa eccezionali.

Nato da madre cilena e padre pakistano, il più interessante chitarrista multietnico della sua generazione. Ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte a nove anni e due anni dopo la chitarra. Ha studiato anche il contrabasso a 12 anni. Affascinato ascoltando “Return To Forewer” e Pat Metheny, ha iniziato ad interessarsi del rock, ma anche del flamenco, della musica classica e di quella industana. Nel 1981 ha frequentato la North Texas State University, è molto interessato alla chitarra classica e si è trasferito alla Northwester University sino alla laurea. Nel 1985 ha registrato con Paquito D’Rivera, nel 1992 ha collaborato con Dave Holland, poi nel 1994 con Bob James, nel 1965 con Joe Zawinul , nel 1996 con Javon Jackson. Fautore del folk rock, egli esplora tutte le possibilità ritmiche ed armoniche dei temi che interpreta. Spesso mette fuori altre sue anime come la musica latino-americana, la classica, la world ed il blues. Nel far incontrare musicalmente queste diverse anime, l’oriente con il jazz, crea i colori e le atmosfere della Mahavishnu di McLaughlin. Ha insegnato chitarra alla Northern Illinois University.

Originariamente è stato un batterista rock, in seguito ha avuto i primo contatti con il jazz alla Chiba University. Dopo essersi diplomato in musica è andato a studiare alla Berklee College of Music a Boston. Qui ha anche avuto modo di suonare con Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Antonio Hart, Geoff Keezer, Junko Onishi e altri nei jazz club locali. Nel 1991 è tornato in patria, ed ha suonato con il quartetto di Joh Yamada e Seiji Tada, poi con il gruppo “Smokin’” del chitarrista Yoshiaki Miyanoue. Ha partecipato a diversi importanti festival del jazz.

Musicista che ha iniziato a seguire degli studi classici. In seguito è stato attratto dal jazz ed ha iniziato a suonare nelle orchestre sulle navi da crociera. Nel 1952 ha messo su la sua prima orchestra ”The Sharps and Flats” di stampo ellingtoniano. Ha partecipato ha diversi Festival Internazionali, ottenendo diversi premi dalla critica.

Nel 1989 si è trasferito a Tokyo dove è entrato nel quintetto di Atsushi Ikeda, in quello del sassofonista Makoto Oka, ha fatto parte del gruppo X-Bar Unit diretto dal pianista Mokoto Kiriya. Ha suonato nelle orchestre di Yutaka Shiina, Motohiko Hino, Junko Onishi e del chitarrista Koichi Hiroki. Nel 1992 ha guidato insieme a Masahiko Osaka un gruppo di hard-bop e jazz modale. Ha avuto occasione di registrare con Jimmy Heath, John Hicks, Reggie Workman e Jimmy Cobb. Ha insegnato al Senzoku Junior College.

Ha iniziato a suonare il clarinetto nella banda militare ed in seguito lo ha studiato al City College di Los Angeles. Ha iniziato la carriera con l’orchestra di Ray Anthony. Nel 1953 ha suonato con Al McIntyrer, nel 1954 con Gerry Gray e dal 1955 al 1956 è stato con Woody Herman. Dal 1953 al 1955 ha lavorato nell’area di Los Angeles con Ken Hanna, nel 1957 con Buddy DeFranco, ha registrato con Benny Goodman , con la Neophonic orchestra di Stan Kenton nel 1964, con Bud Shank nel 1966 e con Chuck Flores nel 1975. Ha quindi lavorato per il cinema, la televisione ed in gruppi commerciali. Ha registrato anche con Bob Florence, con la Rather Large Band, con Roger Newmann.

Ha studiato al Bishop College di Marshall nel Texas. Ha fatto una tournée con Don Albert dal 1937 e 1938. Ha diretto l’orchestra Gladewater. Si è stabilito ad Harlem, ha registrato con Dickie Thompson, Earl Bostic, Billy Kyle, Russell Procope, Danny Burley, Count Basie, Billy Taylor, Helen Humes, Lucky Millinder. Ha suonato con Tiny Grimes a New York nel 1946. Ha diretto anche un suo gruppo swing, ha suonato con Wynonie Harris. Ha diretto la scuola di musica a Gladewater nel Texas. A Wichita Falls ha diretto una sua orchestra sino al 1954, in seguito ha insegnato alla Madison High School ed alla Oliver Wendell Holmes Junior High School sino al 1976. HARDEN WILBUR (TP)

La sua attività professionale è iniziata in gruppi locali di rhythm and blues come quelli di Roy Brown e Ivory Joe Hunter, con i quali ha lavorato anche sulle navi da crociera. Nel 1957 si è trasferito a Detroit dove è entrato nel gruppo di Yusef Lateef, sostituendo Curtis Fuller. Nel 1958 è andato a New York e l’incontro con John Coltrane; con lui ha inciso diversi brani che hanno messo in risalto la sua maestria specie al flicorno. Musicista dalle indubbie qualità, che però è repentinamente scomparso dalla scena musicale. Musicista molto espressivo, in possesso di una ottima sonorità al flicorno oltre che alla tromba. Classico strumentista hardbop ha rivelato anche delle ottime qualità di compositore. Nel suo modo di suonare si sente l’influenza di Davis.

A sedici anni per una esplosione di un candelotto di dinamite è diventato cieco. Musicalmente i suoi primi maestri sono stati i rumori della natura, i ritmi degli indiani, la musica povera ed in seguito quelli più rigorosi alla Iowa School for the Bild che ha frequentato nel 1943. Arrivato a New York, ha amato esibirsi per le strade in abbigliamenti da barbone suonando nenie indefinibili, accompagnandosi con strumenti semplicissimi che si costruisce da se. Presto è diventato un personaggio culto per i musicisti della 52ma strada, spesso Charlie Parker si è intrattenuto con lui. Nel 1974 è venuto in Europa, in Germania, anche se all’inizio quasi completamente ignorato, ha trovato un gruppo di giovani in sintonia con la sua visione musicale e ha deciso di stabilirsi definitivamente a Recklinghausen. La sua teoria musicale e del ritmo la chiama “snaketime”, un avanzare sinuoso. Musicista geniale, il suo è un messaggio spirituale che durerà nel tempo ed è irripetibile.

E’ cresciuto a Cleveland, imparando da solo a suonare il pianoforte ed il primo ingaggio lo ha avuto con Marion Sears nel 1938. Lo stesso anno si è trasferito a New York dove ha lavorato come pianista ed arrangiatore con Teddy Wilson, poi con Coleman Hawkins nel 1939, con Cab Calloway nel 1941, con Artie Shaw, Larry Clayton, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman. E’ stato direttore ed accompagnatore di Billie Holiday. Purtroppo ha dovuto sempre limitare il suo impegno per le cattive condizioni di salute. Arrangiatore della scuola di Kansas City, ha lavorato a lungo con Count Basie, poi anche per Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman e Teddy Wilson.

HARDMAN BILL (TP)

Ha iniziato a studiare giovanissimo il trombone e la tromba, i suoi punti di riferimento sono stati Louis Armstrong e Roy Eldridge. Mentre ancora frequentava la scuola ha suonato con Tadd Dameron e, dopo il diplom,a ha suonato con Tiny Bradshaw dal 1953 al 1955, con il quale si è fatto conoscere ed apprezzare. Ha registrato il suo primo disco con Jackie McLean nel 1955, nel 1956 ha lavorato con Charles Mingus, ha fatto parte dei Jazz Messengers di Art Blakey. Ha collaborato ancora con Mal Waldron, Horace Silver, Lou Donaldson nel 1959, con Lloyd Price nel 1963, Hank Mobley, Cedar Walton, John Coltrane e Billy Higgins. Ha suonato ancora diverse volte in vari periodi con Charles Mingus, ma soprattutto con i Jazz Messengers di Art Blakey. Ha diretto il gruppo la “Brass Company”. Ha collaborato con il “Collective Black Artists’Ensemble” e con Junior Cook. Tromba dalla voce robusta, rappresenta lo spirito dei Jazz Messengers e resta uno dei più notevoli musicisti dell’hard bop.

HARDWICK OTTO, TOBY. (AS)
Washington D. C. 31/5/1904. – New York, 5/8/1970.
Ha debuttato nel 1918 con la Carroll’s Columbia Orchestra, poi ha suonato con Elmer Snowden e nel 1922 ha seguito il suo compagno di scuola Duke Ellington a New York ed è rimasto con lui sino al 1928. Ha anche suonato con John Ricks, Noble Sissle, Fats Waller, con Chick Webb nel 1929) e nel 1932 è ritornato con il suo primo amico il Duca. In seguito ha lasciato la musica per gestire alberghi e curare la sua fattoria nel Maryland. Buon polistrumentista, è stato il primo sax soprano della storia del jazz.

HARDY EMMETT (TP)
Gretna, Luisiana. 12/6/1903. – New Orleans, Louisiana. 16/6/1925.
Ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte ed il banjo, a tredici anni a suonare la cornetta ed a 15 ha suonare sui battelli fluviali con Jack Papa Laine. Ha suonato anche nella locale orchestra di Norman Brownlee, oltre a lavorare come metalmeccanico in una fonderia. Nel 1920 insieme a Leo Rappolo suo collega con Brownlee, è stato ascoltato dalla famosa cantante e ballerina Bee Palmer, che li ha assunti entrambi nella band che l’accompagna nelle sue esibizioni. Ha suonato con la Palmer a Davemport e più tardi vi è ritornato perché ingaggiato da Carlise Evans sul battello Capitol. E’ arrivato a Chicago dove è entrato nei “New Orleans Rhythm Kings”. In seguito per un inspiegabile ostracismo del locale sindacato è stato costretto a tornare a New Orleans nella banda di Brownlee. Purtroppo colpito da tubercolosi ha dovuto ridurre l’attività sino a lasciarla completamente nel 1924. Di lui non restano tracce sonore registrate poiché egli non ha avuto mai l’occasione di partecipare ad una seduta di incisione. E’ stato rivalutato dopo mezzo secolo e secondo testimonianze di autorevoli pionieri del jazz, come Paul Mares e Ben Pollack, il grande Bix Beiderbecke ne avrebbe pedissequamente copiato lo stile, la sonorità e c’è chi dice persino le idee.

Angola, Indiana. 26/6/1937. – Hamilton, Canada. 1/1/1997.
Ha studiato ed iniziato ha lavorare a Toronto dove si era trasferito nel 1956. Nel 1962 ha lavorato con Gigi Gryce, poi con Herbie Mann e con Martin Denny. Ha collaborato anche con George Shearing, Mal Waldron, Ted Curson, Marty Napoleon, Sol Yaged.

Ha imparato da solo a suonare la batteria.All’inizio degli anni ’50 ha modo di svolgere un grande lavoro nella zona di New York dove ha fatto parte di diversi gruppi, con i quali ha lavorato sia nei club che nelle sale di registrazione. Nel 1954 ha lavorato con Kai Winding/Jay Jay Johnson, con Gigi Gryce con Art Farmer, Dave Amnram, George Barrow, Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, con Lou Donaldson dal 1959 al 1961. Ha fatto parte dei ”Play House Four” nel locale Minton’s, ha partecipato al Festival di Monterey con Stan Getz nel 1962. Ha suonato anche con Mary Lou Williams, ha registrato con Horace Parlen, Stanley Turrentine, Ike Quebec , Dexter Gordon, Shirley Scott, Grant Green, Gene Harris, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, con George Benson nel 1973,con Johnny Richmond nel 1983. Batterista influenzato da Blakey e da Roach,dallo stile impeccabile e preciso.

Bluesmen texano che ha lavorato molto nei club e nei juke jointdella contea di Austin. Ruvido interprete di blues elettrico e down home, questo blues legato agli umori espressivi e agli spunti narrativi, una musica irrequieta e pensosa. Cantante molto essenziale, scarno ed anche chitarrista stringato.
