MOBLEY HANK, HENRY (ST)
Eastman, Georgia. 7/7/1930. – Philadelphia, Pensylvania. 30/5/1986.
Probabilmente il più grande sassofonista e compositore dell’Hard Bop. Musicista autodidatta, ha debuttato nel 1949 con Paul Gayten, un gruppo di R&B. Dal 1951 si è trasferito a New York dove ha suonato in vari gruppi, con Max Roach, con Tadd Dameron, con Dizzy Gillespie ed anche nell’orchestra di Duke Ellington sino al 1954. Nello stesso anno è stato uno dei fondatori del gruppo storico dei “Jazz Messengers” di Art Bakey, con il quale ha suonato sino al 1956, è stato il primo sassofonista tenore di questo gruppo. Nel 1956 ha suonato con Horace Silver e ha registrato diversi album come leader, ha suonato con Thelonious Monk, con Dizzy Reece e dal 1961 al 1962 con il gruppo di Miles Davis. In seguito ha lavorato freelance ed ha inciso per la Blue Note con suoi gruppi. Dal 1968 al 1970 ha fatto una lunga tournée europea. Purtroppo la sua carriera è stata spesso interrotta per motivi di salute, determinati dall’abuso di sostanze stupefacenti. Ha inoltre collaborato con Jackie McLean, Milton Jackson, Lee Morgan, Kenny Dorham e Donald Byrd. Sassofonista dalla voce morbida, dalla sonorità rotonda, velatamente malinconica specie nelle ballad. Le sue improvvisazioni nello spirito del hard bop sono complesse ma sempre eleganti.

Durante gli studi ha iniziato a suonare il basso in gruppi studenteschi. Ha avviato la carriera di musicista professionista nel 1971 nel gruppo del sassofonista Yoshio Otomo. Ha suonato anche con il Ryo Kawasaki Quintet, con il Takehiro Honda Trio e lo Yusuke Miné Quintet.
MODAL JAZZ.
Stile di jazz che si è sviluppato nella metà degli anni ’50, un ritmo armonico che si muove in relazione al bop in maniera più lenta. La prima pietra è stata posta da George Russell con il suo “Lydian Chromatic Concept of Total Organization” (The art nad science of tonal gravity). Dal punto di vista discografico il primo esempio è stato il “Kind Of Blues” di Miles Davis del 1959, anche se altri lavori ne avevano preannunciato la diffusione, come il “Somethin’ Else” di Julian Adderley del 1958 e lo stesso “Milestones” di Davis del 1958. Il modale in sostanza svincola la progressione degli accordi dalla tonalità del brano, non più necessario che essi sono rispondenti alle regole dell’armonia tonale, costruiti per armonizzare i vari gradi della tonalità. In sostanza con il modale si applica una successione di differenti scale modali, invece di una successione di accordi. Esso è nato in sostanza in alternativa al bebop ed all’hard bop, offrendo una situazione musicale più distesa e meno frenetica sia sul tempo che sull’armonia.
MODERN.
Compagnia discografica ed etichetta, nata a Los Angeles all’inizio del 1945 per opera dei fratelli Jules, Joe, Lester e Saul Bihari. Chiamata inizialmente Modern Music, nome che è stato presto cambiato. Il suo catalogo risulta più impegnato nel campo del jazz West Coast, del rhythm-and-blues e sui concerti organizzati dal Just Jazz di Gene Norman. Nel 1950 ha istituito una etichetta di solo blues la RPM.
MODERNAIRES (THE)
Gruppo vocale molto raffinato, dagli impasti molto dinamici. I suoi membri il leader Hal Dickinson, Chuck Goldstein e Bill Conway il loro primo impegno al Glen Falls Casino di Buffalo con l’orchestra di Ted Fiorito. E’ diventato un quartetto con l’arrivo di Ralph Brewster e con l’orchestra di Fred Warring sono diventati i “Modernaires”. Nel 1937 si sono esibiti alla radio con Paul Witheman, hanno registrato con Jack Teagarden e nell’ottobre del 1940 sono entrati nell’orchestra di Glenn Miller. Nel 1941 si è aggiunta Paula Kelly, moglie di Dickinson. Con Miller e con il sassofonista cantante Tex Benneke hanno registrato “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”disco che ha venduto oltre un milione di copie.

MODERN AZZ QUARTET
Il vibrafonista Milton Jackson, il pianista John Lewis ed il batterista Kenny Clarke nel 1946 facevano parte dell’orchestra di Dizzy Gillespie. Nel 1951 con l’aggiunta del bassista Ray Brown hanno registrato insieme a nome di Milton Jackson. Nel 1952 il bassista Percy Heath ha sostituito Ray Brown, il batterista Conny Kay ha sostituito Clarke ed è nato il Modern Jazz Quartet. Ha iniziato a lavorare allo Chantilly ed al Birdland di New York E’ rimasto immutato nel tempo sia come organico e sia come modo di suonare, producendo una musica nella quale erano perfettamente fuse lo swing e le sonorità delicatissime e classicheggianti. Nell’estate del 1960 si è sciolto, Lewis ha continuato la sua attività di compositore ed insegnante e gli altri hanno continuato a lavorare con gruppi diversi. Si è ricostituito in occasione del Festival Jazz di Monterey, dove si è esibito insieme al chitarrista Laurindo Almeida. Ne 1974 Milton Jackson ha diretto un suo gruppo ed il MJQ si è ricostituito solo per concerti o tournée nel 1976, nel 1977 e nel 1981 per una serie di concerti in Giappone. All’inizio degli anni ’90 Connie Kay ha avuto problemi di salute ed è stato sostituito da Mickey Roker. Nel 1994 Kay è morto e nel febbraio del 1995 alla batteria è arrivato Albert ”Tootie” Heath, fratello di Percy. Nel 1997 si è sciolto definitivamente. La musica del MJQ è stata un misto perfetto di puro bop e cool jazz, interpretata in modo perfetto dai quattro protagonisti, dei quali il più esuberante è Jackson in contrasto con la pacatezza di Lewis e di Heath.

Nella seconda metà degli anni’50 è nato il movimento della “Third Stream Music”, che intende fondere le pratiche del jazz e della musica accademica. A capo Gunther Shuller, John Lewis e Jay Jay Jonson. Musica che però ha avuto vita breve, è stata attiva solo negli studi.

Ha studiato e si è laureato all’Università di Miami nel 1951 ed in composizione alla University of Southern California nel 1953. Trasferitosi a Los Angeles ha lavorato con Benny Carter, con Vido Musso nel 1953, nel 1954 con Stan Getz e Zoot Sims, nel 1955 con Jerry Gray, con Bill Holman, Shorty Rogers, Ben Webster, Maybard Ferguson, Buddy DeFranco e Jack Sheldon. Ha inciso con Bob Gordon, Jack Montrose, Dave Pell, John Graas. Ha suonato in gruppo con Montrose, Paul Chambers e Bill Perkins nel 1957. Nel 1960 ha fatto un tour in Australia con Benny Carter e ha fatto parte del quintetto di Paul Horn, con il quale è rimasto sino al 1968. ha guidato un trio con Jimmy Bond, con il quale ha inciso a San Francisco nel 1961. Dal 1965 al 1975 ha lavorato con Les Brown, ha scritto gli arrangiamenti per Jack Sheldon e per Rosemary Clooney.

Etichetta discografica emessa dalla “Burkhert Henen of Moers Music Verlag” di Moers in Germania, nel 1974. E’stata all’inizio chiamata “Ring”, ma poi nel 1977 il nome è stato cambiato perché vi era una etichetta canadese dello stesso nome. Essa è specializzata nel free jazz.

Ha iniziato a studiare la batteria nel 1945 ed ancora dilettante ha suonato con vari musicisti texani come Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman e Leo Wright. Ha frequentato il Tillotson College a Huston dove nel 1953 si è diplomato ed ha iniziato ad insegnare. Nel 1961 è entrato nel gruppo di Ornette Coleman, ha suonato poi con Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, ha messo su un gruppo nel 1964 con Alan Shorter, Pharoah Sanders e Carle Bley. Si è trasferito in California dove ha suonato con i “Firebirds” di Prince Lasha. E’ stato alla testa del gruppo di famiglia con i suoi quattro figli, la ”Moffett Family”. Ha suonato poi con Keshavan Maslak, nei “Love By Millions”nel 1981, con Ahmed Abdullah, Chico Freeman e Wilbur Morris. Batterista tradizionale, descritto come il Sid Catlett del free-jazz, dalla esecuzione decisa, precisa e sempre di buon gusto.

Figlio di Charles, è stato iniziato alla musica da Ornette Coleman. Ha frequentato la Julliard School ed ha fatto esperienza nell’orchestra di famiglia. Ha iniziato a lavorare con Wynton Marsalis dal 1983 al 1985, con K. V. Moslak, il Manhattan Jazz Quintet, con Mundell Lowe, Monty Alexander, Milt Jackson, con Stanley Jordan nel 1984, Art Blakey, Steve Gadd, Brandford Marsalis, Tony Williams. Frank Lowe, Lew Soloff, John Stubblefield, Mulgrew Miller, Wallace Roney, Kenny Garrett, Robin Eubanks, Steve Turre, Geoff Keezer, Courtney Pine, Kevin Eubanks, Sonny Sharrock, Donald Brown, Ronnie Burrage. Dal 1993 al 1997 ha fatto parte del quartetto di Ornette Coleman e nella metà degli anni ’90 è tronato con il Modern Jazz Quintet. Nel 1987 ha registrato il suo primo disco da leader. Fà parte dell’ultima generazione di bassisti elettrici.
