CLAYTON BUCK WILBUR DORSEY (TP)

Parsons, Kansas. 12/11/1911. – New York. 8/12/1991.

Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a sei anni, quindi sotto la guida del padre, direttore di orchestre attive nelle chiese, ha studiato la tromba. Ha esordito come pianista e solo a diciannove anni si è impegnato come trombettista, sempre in orchestre ecclesiastiche. Ha debuttato nel 1932 in California nell’orchestra diretta da Charles Echols, è passato poi con quella di La Vern Floyd ed infine con quella di Ear Dancer. Dal 1934 al 1936 è entrato in una orchestra di quattordici elementi diretta da Teddy Weatherford, per una scrittura dal 1934 al 1936 a Shanghai. Tornato negli Stati Uniti ha suonato con i Kansas City Six di Lester Young e nel 1937 è entrato nell’orchestra di Count Basie per sostituire Hot Lips Page. Con Basie è arrivato a New York, dove in precedenza Clayton si era già messo in luce accompagnando Billy Holiday in una serie di incisioni rimaste famose. Con Basie è diventato uno dei solisti di maggiore spicco, ha composto diversi brani e si è cimentato con successo anche nello scrivere arrangiamenti. Ha partecipato al concerto alla Carnegie Hall del 1938 con Benny Goodman e nello stesso anno ha diretto i Kansas City Five in sala d’incisione. Nel 1943 ha lasciato Basie e ha inciso con Coleman Hawkins nel 1944. Dopo il servizio militare nel 1946 con un suo complesso ha partecipato a varie tournée con la JATP, ha suonato con J.C.Herad, con Charlie Ventura, con Trummy Young e con Lucky Thompson. Nel 1949 ha soggiornato per diversi mesi a Parigi dove ha inciso con Earl Hines e Bill Coleman ed ha organizzato diverse jam session in studi di registrazione. Nel 1959 ha collaborato con Eddie Condon con il quale si è recato in tournée in Giappone ed in Australia. Dal 1967 ha dovuto rallentare l’attività per problemi di salute, dedicandosi all’insegnamento. Nella sua carriera ha suonato e inciso anche con Harry James, Sidney Bechet e Jimmy Rushing. Trombettista molto influenzato da Louis Armstrong, dallo stile emotivo, dalla voce delicata piena di calore e dallo swing leggero ed elegante, molto legato alle armonie tradizionali, abilissimo nell’uso delle sordine. Le sue linee melodiche e la sua voce così piena di vibrato sono legate alle sue esperienze nella musica ecclesiale, difatti le sue inflessioni piene di patos hanno origine da quelle semplici e lineari dei gospel e degli spirituals. Si è dimostrato anche un buon arrangiatore fanno testo tutti quelli scritti per Basie, tra i quali il celebre “One O’ Clock Jump”, brano composto insieme da Clayton e Basie. Si dice che il titolo fosse stato creato alla fine di una trasmissione radio, quando il presentatore, annunciando che mancavano cinque minuti alla fine del programma, abbia chiesto a Basie quale fosse il titolo del brano che avrebbero eseguito ed i due guardando l’orologio decisero appunto di chiamarlo “One O’ Clock Jump”.

CLAYTON DOCTOR PETER JOE. (VC).

Ohio 1907. – Chicago, Illinois. ott. 1947.

Cantante di blues i cui dati anagrafici sono molto incerti. E’ cresciuto musicalmente nei club di Menphis, in seguito si è stabilito a St. Louis dove negli anni trenta ha registrato per la Bluebird insieme al pianista Toots Willis. La sua carriera nata sotto i migliori auspici si è interrotta bruscamente, egli perde in un incendio la moglie e i quattro figli, sconvolto dal dolore ha lasciato l’attività e di lui non si sono avute più notizie. Nel 1945 è torna a lavorare con il nome di Doctor al club Long Cabin di Indianapolis. Il successo è immediato e di grandi dimensioni, la sua fama è arrivata sino a Chicago. Purtroppo anche questa volta non è durata molto, poiché nel 1947 è morto nel più fitto mistero. Bluesmen maestro nel double talk, il doppio senso nel canto blues, capace di coinvolgere l’ascoltatore che era portato a dialogare con lui. Impegnato sino alla fine nella satira di una certa società anche di colore degli Stati Uniti.

Utrecht, 11/05/1984.

Pianista e compositore, nato nei Paesi Bassi, ma cresciuto in California, figlio del bassista John Clayton. Ha studiato per undici anni piano classico con Linda Buck e poi piano jazz con Kenny Barron e Billy Childs. Laureatosi nel 2002 alla Los Angeles County High School For The Arts, ed ha ricevuto lo Shelly Manne Award per i giovani emergenti dal Los Angeles Jazz Society.

CLAYTON JAMES KID (TP)

Jasper County, Missouri. 2/3/1902. – New Orleans, Louisiana. 17/12/1963.

Trombettista che si è ben espresso sia nello stile New Orleans, con la Original Dixieland Jazz Band, di Nick La Rocca, con l’Original New Orleans Jazz Band di Frank Christian e Jimmy Durante e sia nel blues e nel rhythm and blues. In seguito ha suonato con varie brass band tra le quali quella di Jack Carey. Negli anni della depressione ha suonato con la VPA Band, un gruppo molto modesto. Nel dopoguerra ha continuato a dividersi tra il rhythm and blues ed il jazz tradizionale. All’inizio degli anni’60 ha fatto parte del gruppo del Captain John Handy. Ha anche diretto con un certo successo una sua formazione che ha suonato del buon blues e con il quale ha registrato anche dei dischi.

Sin da bambina ha ascoltato le canzoni cantante dalla madre, che non era professionista. Ha studiato il pianoforte dal 1951 al 1959, ha fatto parte del coro della scuola. Ha studiato al St. Louis Institute of Music nel 1959, poi alla Miami University dell’Ohio nel 1963. Ha scoperto quindi il jazz e si è trasferita a New York, dove si è fatta coinvolgere nel movimento del free-jazz. Nel 1971 ha diretto un workshop, poi nel 1972 ha lavorato con Mark Levine, con John Fisher nel 1975, con il quale anche ha registrato, con Steve Reich nel 1976, nel 1977 con Bob Mover, nel 1979 con Muhal Richard Abrams, nel 1981 con Paul McCandless. Dal 1979 ha insegnato al City College di New York. Nel 1980 la prima registrazione da leader con Jane Ira Bloom, il pianista Larry Karush e Harvie Swartz. Nel 1982 in Germania si è esibita ed ha registrato con il Vocal Summit. Ha partecipato al Festival di Willisau. Ha insegnato al Cornish College of the Arts di Seattle. Ha continuato la sua attività di cantante ed ha guidato per molti anni un gruppo insieme a Julian Priester, Gary Peacock e Jerry Granelli. Nel 1985 ha registrato in duo con Granelli, nel 1988 ha registrato con il “Quartett” e nel 1991 con Bloom e Granelli. Fratello del bassista John Clayton. Mentre frequenta la scuola ha studiato privatamente con Bill Green. Ha frequentato l’Università di Stato a Northridge dove si è laureato in clarinetto, in oboe e corno inglese. Ha iniziato a lavorare e registrare con artisti pop di fama come Steve Wonder, i Wind And Fire, i Gladys Knight, Kenny Rogers, i Temptation, i Four Tops, Michael Jackson, Patti Labelle, Madonna, Tony Bennett e Frank Sinatra. Dal 1984 al 1986 ha fatto parte della Count Basie Orchetra, diretta da Thad Jones, ha fatto parte della Gene Harris PhilipMorris Superband dal 1989 al 1991. Co-leader nella big band Clayton-Hamilton ed anche nel quartetto Clayton Brothers. Nel 1996 ha lasciato New York e da strumentista versatile è stato molto attivo nel ruolo di freelance. Nel 1998 si è stabilito nell’area di Los Angeles. Egli è reputato uno dei migliori altosassofonisti della sua generazione, dalla perfetta intonazione e dalla grande tecnica. I suoi modelli sono Cannonball Adderley e Johnny Hodges.

CLAYTON JOHN LEE JR (B)

Venice, CA. 20/8/1952.

Fratello dell’alto sassofonista Jeff. La loro madre é stata una pianista, organista e cantante nel coro della chiesa. Ha studiato il contrabasso classico ed al sedici anni quello jazz con Ray Brown alla Università della California a Los Angeles. Ha debuttato professionalmente nello show televisivo “The Mancini Generations”. Ha lasciato gli studi alla Indiana University, ha suonato nell’estate del 1973 con la New Tommy Dorsey Band diretta da Murray McEarchen. In seguito ha suonato con Monty Alexander dal 1975 al 1977 e dall’agosto 1977 all’ottobre 1979 è andato in tournée con Count Basie. Insieme al fratello ha diretto i Clayton Brothers. Dal 1980 al 1985 è vissuto in Olanda dove ha lavorato con la Amsterdam Philarmonic Orchestra. Nel 1985 è tornato a Los Angeles dove ha fondato insieme all’amico di sempre Jeff Hamilton la Clayton-Hamilton big band. Ha suonato anche per brevissimo tempo con George Shearing, Milt Jackson, con Cedar Walton e con Bill Higgins ed ha insegnato alla University Southern California. Bassista dal tocco impeccabile, abile specialmente nell’uso dell’archetto. Molto influenzato da Ray Brown, suo iniziale maestro. Ha dimostrato di essere anche un ottimo arrangiatore, lavorando con la Skymaster, la big band della radio di Amsterdam, e contribuendo notevolmente al successo della Clayton-Hamilton e delle cantanti Natalie Cole e Dee Dee Bridgewater. Direttore artistico della Los Angeles Philarmonic e della Hollywood Bowel Association.

CLEARWATER EDDIE HAARINGTON. (VC-G).

Macon, Mississippi. 10/1/1935.

Cantante di blues urbano, diventato uno dei maggiori rappresentanti del blues urlato. Inizialmente ha subito l’influenza della musica country dei bianchi Red Folley e Hank Williams e poi di quella di Chu Berry. Nel 1948 si è trasferito a Birmingham nell’Alabama e qui ha iniziato a lavorare in gruppi spirituals della chiesa locale. Nel 1950 si è trasferito a Chicago, dove ha accompagnato con la chitarra elettrica gruppi gospel in diversi locali della città, tra i quali il “Roberts Temple”. Nel 1952 ha messo su il suo trio con il quale si è esibito con successo al “Grand Ballroom”, al Cadillac Baby”, al “Skyway Lunge” ed al “Happy Home Lunge” ed in altri locali. Nel 1957 ha collaborato con Magic Sam, al “Mel’s Hideaway”. Sempre nel 1957 ha registrato con lo pseudonimo di Clearwater. Nel 1970 ha messo su un suo gruppo insieme a Mac Thompson, con il quale si esibisce in molti locali del West Side.
