MCCORKLE SUSANNAH (VC)
Berkeley, California. 1/1/1946. – New York. 19/5/2001.
Laureata alla Berkeley in letteratura italiana negli anni della contestazione, è arrivata al jazz durante un soggiorno in Inghilterra ed ha lavorato con Bruce Turner, Keith Nichols, Dick Sudhalter ed il pianista Keith Ingham, che per diversi anni sarà il suo accompagnatore ed il suo direttore musicale. Ha preso parte a concerti insieme a Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon e Bobby Hackett. Nel 1975 si è esibita con Alec Wilder, al Ronnie Scott’s. Tornata negli U.S.A. si è esibita nei club ed ha inciso dischi che hanno avuto diversi riconoscimenti. Nella sue voce vi sono inflessioni alla Billie Holiday e le sdolcinatezze della Marilyn Monroe cantante. Voce chiara, aperta, dal vibrato terso e dalla pronuncia limpida. E’ anche nota come scrittrice di romanzi, alcuni di fantascienza, uno in particolare nel quale racconta la sua giovinezza trascorsa in Italia. Purtroppo la depressione l’ha portata al suicidio, si è gettata nel vuoto dalla sua abitazione di New York.

Jackson, Mississippi. 26/5/1909. – Chicago, Illinois. 26/7/1950.
Più noto con il soprannome di “Papa Charlie”, ha cominciato a suonare nella regione di Jackson con il fratello Kansas Joe McCoy. Insieme hanno animato le feste private e hanno registrato come “The Brothers McCoy”. E’ emigrato con il fratello a Chicago, dove ha diretto dei gruppi. L’attività è stata interrotta dalla partecipazione alla seconda guerra guerra mondiale. E’ tornato alla musica ed in seguito le precarie condizioni di salute lo hanno portato alla morte, solo pochi mesi dopo la morte del fratello. Ha registrato con i”Mississippi Sheiks”, con Tommy Johnson e sotto il nome di “Mississippi Mud Ateppers”, insieme al chitarrista Walter Vincent. E’ particolarmente abile con il mandolino.

MCCOY CLYDE (TP)
Ashland, Kentucky. 29/12/1903. – Menphis, Tennessee. 11/6/1990.
Trombettista rimasto famoso per la sua interpretazione di “Sugar Blues”registrata nel 1931 e con altrettanto successo registrata poi da Johnny Mercer nel 1947. Nel 1912 si è trasferito con la famiglia a Portsmouth nell’Ohio dove ha imparato a suonare la tromba. Ben presto ha iniziato a esibirsi a scuola e nelle funzioni religiose ed ha iniziato a lavorare sui battelli fluviali. Nel 1920 ha formato la sua prima orchestra a Knoxville un popolare luogo di villeggiatura nel Tennessee, avuto successo si è trasferito a New York e quindi nel 1924 in California. Ha iniziato a suonare il “wah-wah”che è diventata la sua firma. Nel 1930 ha raggiunto il massimo della fama con “Sugar Blues”. E’ rimasto a Chicago sino al 1935, dove ha anche registrato diversi dischi. Nel 1942 si è arruolato insieme a tutta la sua orchestra, con la quale si è esibito in molte baso navali e ospedali militari. Nel 1945 congedato la cantante Maxime Means, ha riorganizzato la sua orchestra ed è stato attivo sino al 1955 quando ha sciolto l’orchestra e ha aperto dei ristoranti insieme alla moglie, impresa che è fallita ed è tornato alla musica con scarso successo sino al 1985 quando colpito dall’Alzheimer si è ritirato. Nel 1935 è stato uno dei fondatori della rivista Downbeat.

E’ cresciuta a Menphis e poi si è trasferita a New York nel 1922. Temperamento girovago ha lavorato nei club a Philadelphia, New York e Saratoga. A New York si è esibita con l’orchestra di Leroy Smith all’Harlem Opera House. Dal 1935 si è trasferita a Philadelphia, nel 1938 ad Albany e quindi è tornata a New York dove ha registrato. Ottima cantante di jazz, che ha contribuito a valorizzare il blues nel vaudeville.
MCCOY WILBURN “JOE”. (G-VC)
Raymond, Mississipi. 11/5/1905. – Chicago, Illinois. 28/1/1950.
Si è trasferito prima a Menphis e poi a Chicago e qui è arrivato il successo. E’ diventato una delle figure di maggior spicco del blues della città. Alla fine del 1934 si è separato dalla moglie ed ha ripreso a collaborare con il fratello Charlie. Con il trombettista Herb Morand ha fondato gli “Harlem Hamfats”. Poi insieme anche a Odelf Rand (cl) e Horace Malcolm (p) hanno ottenuto un buon successo e hanno registrato diversi dischi. In seguito ha sciolto il gruppo ed ha continuato ad esibirsi ed a incidere da solo. Dopo la guerra e la morte del fratello si è ritirato dalla scena musicale. Dal 1934 al 1942 è stato anche produttore per la Decca. Cantante che si esprime meglio nei blues dal tempo lento, anche se nei tempi veloci riesce ad esprimere tutta la sua aggressività, piena di immaginazione e di musicalità. Voce blues molto vicina al jazz.
MCCRACKEN BOB, ROBERT EDWARD. (CL)
Dallas, Texas. 23/11/1904. – Los Angeles, California. 4/7/1972.
Nel 1921 ha debuttato con la Eddie Whitley’s Band, poi ha suonato con Doc Ross. Si è spostato a New York e qui ha suonato con Willard Robinson, con Joe Gill, con Frank Trumbauer, Joe Venuti, Leonard Keller, Bud Freeman e Jimmy McPartland. Negli anni’40 ha lavorato con Wingy Manone, con Bemmy Goodman e con Russ Morgan. Trasferitosi a Chicago ha messo su un suo gruppo con il quale si è esibito allo Chez Paree. Nel 1952 ha fatto una tournée con Louis Armstrong, tornato in patria si stabilisce sulla West Coast dove ha suonato con Jack Teagarden, Pete Daily, Ben Pollack e Kid Ory. Negli anni’60 è tornato con Teagarden, poi ha suonato con Wild Bill Davison nel 1967 e con Russ Morgan nel 1969.
MCCRACKLIN JIMMY (VC)
St. Louis, Missouri. 13/8/1921.
Dopo aver svolto il servizio militare in marina è andato a Richmond in California dove ha iniziato ad esibirsi a livello locale. Sono arrivate le prime registrazioni ed i primi successi.ed è arrivato ai club di San Francisco. Cantante di blues e R&B che ha conservato nel suo canto i forti accenti della sua origine. Baritono dalla voce grezza e asciutta, un po’ chioccia e abbaiante sulle note alte, dai finali aspri ed incisivi. Voce dalla matura intensità che metteva in mostra soprattutto nelle sue agrodolci composizioni che sono state oggetto di interesse da parte del pubblico sino agli anni ’60. Famosa tra le altre “Just Got To Know”.

Batterista inizialmente dal tocco delicato e molto fantasioso, che ricorda un po’ Joe Morello, alla guida del suo gruppo però mette fuori una certa grinta che ricorda quella di Max Roach. La sua musica è un mainstream moderno, stimolante e pieno di energia che ricorda i gruppi di McCoy Tyner.

Già a quindici anni ha lavorato nelle brass band, a 24 è entra nella “Barnun and Bailey Circus Band” e poi nella ”Excelsior Brass Band”. In seguito ha diretto un suo gruppo con il quale ha partecipato diverse volte al ”Jefferson City Buzzard”. Ha lavorato con John Robinchaux, con Armand Piron, con Freddie Keppard, nella “Olympia Orchestra” e con la”Bulls Club Brass Band”.

Il suo primo maestro è stato suo padre, che poi nel 1920 ha sostituito nella banda di John Robinchaux. Ha suonato inoltre con la “Excelsior Brass Band”, con la Tuxedo Brass Band”. Nel 1927 ha suonato con il bassista Eddie Jackson e negli anni della depressione con la “W.P.A.Brass Band. Avrebbe potuto conseguire maggiori affermazioni se non fosse stato condizionato dal vizio del bere. Ha insegnato a suonare la tromba al fratellastro Alvin Alcorn.
MCCURDY CHARLES (CL)
New Orleans, Loisiana. 1865. – New Orleans, Louisiana. 4/10/1933.
Dal 1893 al 1905 ha fatto parte della banda di John Robichaux. Nel 1905 ha messo su insieme a Bab Frank la ”Peerless Orchestra”. In seguito ha suonato con la “Excelsior Brass Band”, nel 1913 è tornato con Robichaux. Ha fatto parte della “Olympia Orchestra” di Armand Piron, poi nel 1918 con la S.S.Capitol Orchestra di Fate Marable, dal 1925 al 1927 è tornato con Robichaux e nel 1920 ha suonato con la “Nola Band” di Peter Lacaze. In seguito ha lavorato in orchestre di circhi e di spettacoli di rivista. Di lui si dice sia stato uno dei clarinettisti più eleganti e delicati degli albori del jazz. Famoso soprattutto per il suono limpido e dolce dello strumento.

Finito il servizio militare, nel quale ha fatto parte della banda dell’Air Force, è entra nell’orchestra di Chuck Mangione. Nel 1961 nel Jazztet di Art Farmer, poi con Dwike Mitchell nel 1962, Willie Ruff, Bobby Timmons, con Betty Carter nel 1962, con Sonny Rollins nel 1964, con Cannonball Adderley dal 1965 al 1975, con John Williams nel 1973, Mark Murphy, Kenny Rankin, Joe Zawinul, Gene Ammons, con Benny Golson nel 1981, Jerome Richardson, Davidd Copeland nel 1983, con Jay Jay Johnson nel 1984.. Solido accompagnatore, con in più una buona dose di virtuosismo.

Cresciuto ad Omaka nel Nebraska, cantautore che fa parte della nuova scuola sorta nei primi anni ’70, per i quali la voce deve essere un mezzo per trasmettere messaggi di protesta e come nel suo caso apocalittici, come nel suo “Headless Heroes”. Veterano hitmaker, che ha conosciuto un momento di gloria integrando nella sua voce di tenore soul degli elementi di jazz.
MCDONALD EARL. (VC)

Con la famiglia arriva a Louisville a due anni e a quindici anni ha organizzato la sua Louisville Jug Band con la quale lavora nelle feste. Nel 1914 si è esibito al New York Ippodrome e nella estate del 1915 al Lamb’s Cafè di Chicago ed in altri locali famosi. Nel 1924 insieme a Clifford Hayes a New York registra con la Sara Martin’s Jug Band, dal 1926 al 1927 ha registrato per la Victor con la Dixieland Jug Blowers. In seguito ha lavorato alla radio WHAS con la Ballard Chefs Jug Band. Nel 1942 si è ritirato dall’attività.

Ha ascoltato attentamente quello che suonava il gruppo di calypso del padre, originario di Trinidad, e in Harlem. Nel 1961 ha accompagnato il cantante Harry Belafonte, in seguito Roberta Flack ed altri cantanti popolari. In seguito ha suonato con Roland Kirk, con Grover Washington Jr., con Ron Carter nel 1978, con Paul Desmond, con Idris Muhammad, con i fratelli Brecker, con David Samborn, con Steve Kahn, con Chuck Mangione nel 1981. Musicista che si è fatto notare per la sua caratteristica di fondere la musica delle sue origini alle tradizioni africane.

Mentre si applica come atleta ha iniziato anche a suonare il banjo ed il mandolino. Ha iniziato a frequentare la Georgetown University ed ha anche iniziato a suonare in orchestrine da ballo. Ha iniziato la carriera con la”Earl Carroll Orchestra” di Ross Gorman, è passato poi con la Paul Whitenan’s Leviathan Orchestra, Cliff Edwards, con i Charleston Red Nichols nel 1931, con Miff Mole, Jack Pettis, con Jack Teagarden, i Dorsey Brothers, con Joe Venuti nel 1933, con Red Norvo nel 1933, Benny Goodman, Adrian Rollini, con Frank Trumbauer nel 1934, Johnny Mercer, Billie Holiday, C. Bullock, Fats Waller. In seguito ha svolto la sua carriera prevalentemente in orchestre swing come: Artie Shaw, Red Norvo, Jack Pettis, Bunny Berigan. Insieme a Carl Kress ha messo su un duo di chitarre con il quale ha ottenuto un discreto successo. Dotato di una tecnica notevole, fa parte della scuola di chitarristi bianchi votati all’accompagnamento, che svilupparono la tecnica degli assoli ad accordi. Ha avuto una breve carriera stroncata dall’alcoolismo.

Cresciuto a Victoria ha iniziato a suonare il trombone all’età di 12 anni. Dopo aver soggiornato in Inghilterra dove ha debuttato con l’orchestra di John Dankworth nel 1960, quindi nel 1961 è andato a Vancouver dove ha lavorato nei club e negli studi. Ha frequentato la Columbia University e nel 1966 ha suonato nell’orchestra di Woody Herman. Nel 1970 ha messo su il suo gruppo di jazz-rock il “Pacific Salt”. Ha lavorato negli studi a Toronto dal 1973 al 1986 ed ha fatto parte delle orchestre di Rob McConnell e di Doug Hamilton. E’ tornato a Vancouver ed ha composto e diretto una sua composizione la Pellet Suite.

E’ stato l’autentico “Delta Blues”. Cantante soprannominato “Mississippi”, scoperto da Allan Lomax nel 1959. Voce dalla triste intensità in grado di trasformare ogni singola canzone in un racconto unico e singolare. Interprete ora nelle vesti di solitario bluesman del Delta dalla ruvida irruenza e ora dalla profonda religiosità, espressa da solo o insieme alla moglie Annie Mae in chiave spiritual. Straordinario virtuoso di slide guitar dallo stile ipnotico e ammaliante. Ha registrato insieme alla moglie ed agli Hunter’s Gospel Singers. Nel suo repertorio c’era anche gospel e folk song, country e ballate, ma era fondamentalmente un bluesman.

Detto anche “Brother Jack”, ha iniziato l’attività come pianista ed in seguito ha imparato a suonare l’organo da autodidatta, invogliato dalla facilità con la quale ottenevano ingaggi i suonatori di tale strumento. Era già professionista quando ha deciso di arricchire il suo bagaglio frequentando la New York Technical School di Cincinnati. Ha lavorato con Porter Kilbert, Eddie Chamblee, con Willie Jackson nel 1957. Nel 1959 ha messo su un suo trio, nel quale ha avuto alla chitarra un George Benson alle prime armi. Ha suonato e registrato con Jimmy Forrest, Lem Winchester, Harold Vick, Leo Wright, Red Holloway, Benny Golson, con Roland Kirk nel 1961, Grant Green, King Curtis, Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Bill Jennings, Betty Roche, Kenny Burrell. Ha continuato la tradizione degli organisti di rhythm and blues e soul. E’ stato in grado di creare un intenso background e uno swing molto accattivante. E’ senz’altro uno dei virtuosi dell’organo Hammond. Si è rivelato anche un ottimo arrangiatore.

Ha iniziato a suonare il violino a 12 anni e ha continuato a studiarlo a scuola. Ha debuttato nel 1932 con George Simms a Montreal. Si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha suona con Jack Hilton, ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Benny Goodman nel 1936, della Casa Loma Orchestra dal 1937 al 1941. E’ stato il direttore musicale di Paul Whiteman. Si è trasferito in California, dove ha suonato con Harry James nel 1943, con Bob Crosby nel 1946, con Jerry Gray nel 1950, con Freddy Martin nel 1953 e con diversi gruppi della West Coast. Nel 1973 con Duke Ellington e nel 1974 ha ricostituito l’orchestra di Tommy Dorsey. Ha sempre gradito l’attività negli studi e nel cinema. Musicista molto versatile, polistrumentista, il classico musicista da studio.
