FOSTER FRANK (ST)

Cincinnati, Ohio. 23/9/1928.- 26/7/2011.

Ha compiuto gli studi presso la Wilbeforce University, dove è stato anche il miglior solista e il principale arrangiatore dell’orchestra della scuola. Ha debuttato a Detroit con Snooky Young, poi ha suonato al Bluebird Inn con Wardell Gray e Milton Jackson, con Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris ed altri. Durante il servizio militare, nel quale è stato decorato di medaglia d’argento, si è assentato senza permesso per andare a San Francisco a suonare con Dexter Gordon. Dopo il congedo ha suonato con la grande orchestra diretta da Billy Eckstine, poi a Detroit nel gruppo di Elvin Jones, ed anche con Thelenious Monk. Nel luglio del 1953 è andato con Count Basie, con il quale è rimasto sino al 1964 contribuendo non poco al successo dello stesso, lavorando come compositore ed arrangiatore. È stato poi con Woody Herman, ha lavorato come freelance e si dedicato anche all’insegnamento. Ha suonato con Lionel Hampton nel 1967, ha fondato una big band con Duke Pearson, poi con Illinois Jacquet nel 1968, con la Ted Jones/Mel Lewis. Ha diretto vari suoi gruppi, come i “The Loud Majority” con i quali ha fatto delle tournée in Europa ed in Giappone. Ha suonato con Billy Meyers nel 1980, con John Siegel 1982. Dal 1983 ha diretto un quintetto con Frank Wess, con l’orchestra di Quincy Jones nel 1984, nel 1986 ha sostituito Thad Jones alla direzione dell’orchestra degli alunni di Basie, e alla testa della “Jarzmobile Orchestra”. Sassofonista del periodo di transizione, dalla sonorità stretta; molto legato ai boppers, in modo particolare a Sonny Stitt.

Musicista molto versatile, ha studiato al Central College a Fayette nel Missouri e si è laureato all’Università del Kansas, in musica e clarinetto. Si trasferisce in California a Los Angeles nel 1961 dove ha iniziato a lavora nell’industria del cinema. Nel 1962 si unisce a Clare Fisher con il quale ha avuto altre collaborazioni nel corso degli anni. Ha anche suonato con Jimmy Rowles, con Louie Bellson nel 1968, con Warne Marsh, con Mike Barone nel 1969. In questi anni ha avuto una collaborazione feconda con il chitarrista Dennis Budimir, ha suonato con Toshiko Akiyoshi e Lew Tabackin nel 1973, con Laurindo Almeida, con Ed Shaughnessy nel 1974, con Benny Goodman nel 1976, ha registrato con Cal Tjader nel 1984. Ha fondato il gruppo dei “Nova Music Studios”, orchestra formata da insegnanti di musica suoi colleghi. Si è anche esibito come clarinettista classico con l’orchestra di Pasadena. Solista delicato, dal ritmo elegante e dal grande virtuosismo nel suonare varie ance.

Ha debuttato a sedici anni con Beverly Peer, nel 1936 ha suonato con Fess Willimas e nel 1937 con Lil Armstrong. Ha lavorato nel 1940 con Ovie Alston e durante il servizio militare ha suonato nella Banda della 369a National Guard Regimental. Tornato alla vita civile, ha lavorato a New York come free lance, ha suonato con Wilbur De Paris nel 1954 e con Jonah Jones dal 1958 al 1961. chiusura

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 26/4/1928.

Ha cominciato a suonare all’inizio degli anni’50 nel gruppo di Eric Dixon. Ha avuto il felice incontro con Lou Donaldson, con il quale ha collaborato dal 1953 al 1966 ed anche in seguito nel 1982. Ha accompagnato in sala di incisione Donald Byrd e con Ray Barreto. Ha suonato Harvie Swartz, con Jay Leonhardt, con Seldon Powell e con Lord Westbrook. Ha lavorato molto nei migliori club di New York, e soprattutto in quelli di Harlem. E’ stato un improvvisatore originale dal grande slancio.

E’ cresciuto musicalmente a Chicago, dove ha avuto il primo ingaggio importante nel 1945 con Muddy Waters. Nel 1952 ha messo su un suo trio, con il quale ha anche inciso qualche disco. Non ha mai raggiunto la celebrità, anzi la sua morte è passata completamente inosservata. chiusura

Si è dedicato allo studio del basso e del violoncello sotto la guida del padre e della sorella. Ha iniziato a suonare da professionista nel 1906 in un trio di archi. Ha suonato poi con Jack Carey e nelle migliori orchestre dixieland di New Orleans, come l’Eagle Band, la Magnolia Band, Freddy Keppard, Kid Ory, la Tuxedo Orchestra, Armand Piron, King Oliver. Nel 1917 è andato con Fate Marable sui battelli del Mississipi. Nel 1921 e con Charlie Creath a St. Louis, Dewey Johnson, la Ed Allen’s Whyspering Orchestra. Nel 1923 di nuovo con Kid Ory in California. Nel 1929 a New York con Louis Russell sino al 1940 quando l’orchestra era passata sotto la direazione di Louis Armstrong. Ha suonato con Teddy Wilson, Happy Caldwell. Ha abbandonato per un pò di tempo la musica per lavorare nella metropolitana. Nel 1948 è venuto al Festival di Nizza con Mezz Mezzrow, ha suonato con Jimmy Archey, con Bob Wilder, con Willie The Lion Smith nel 1953, con Papa Celestin, con Sammy Price nel 1955, Earl Hines, con Eddie Smith nel 1963 e con Elmer Snowden. E’ stato il punto di riferimento di tutti i bassisti di jazz tradizionale. La sua caratteristica era quella di far ribattere le corde sul legno del basso, gesto tecnico ripreso dai bassisti free. Fratello del più famoso Pop Foster, ha suonato dal 1910 nel quartiere di Storyville. Ha suonato a New Orleans tra gli altri con King Oliver e Louis Armstrong. Ha fatto parte inoltre dei gruppi di Sidney Desvigne e di quello di Fate Marable sui battelli di linea sul Mississippi. In seguito nel 1924 ha suonato e registrato con i “Fate Marable’s Society Syncopators”. Ha suonato con King Oliver a New York nel 1927. chiusura

Ha iniziato a suonare da ragazzo sotto la guida del padre. Ha imparato a suonare l’armonica, che suona spesso lungo i marciapiedi di Maxwell Street a Chicago. Ha lavora spesso con Baby Face Leroy, con Snooky Pryor, con Lazy Bill Lucas e con Floyd James. Ha inciso con Little Brother Montgomery. Come molti suoi colleghi è rimasto inattivo per qualche anno, dal 1950 al 1970m e nel 1971 è ricomparso a Chicago con Willie Johnson e con Hayes Ware. Purtroppo una grave malattia alle corde vocali gli ha fatto progressivamente perdere la voce, cosa che gli ha procurato anche dei disturbi psichici. E’ stato il bluesmen che meglio ha rappresentato il perfetto connubio tra il blues rurale del Delta ed il moderno blues urbano. chiusura

New Orleans, Louisiana. 5/2/1903.

Ha iniziato a suonare sotto la guida dello zio John Joseph ottimo maestro di basso della città. Nel 1925 è entrato nell’orchestra dei fratelli Isahia e Sam Morgan una delle più famose bande di New Orleans. Nel 1932 ha suonato con Steve Lewis e Johnny St. Cyr, è entrato poi nella Tuxedo Orchestra di Bebé Ridgley, una delle poche bande attive durante la depressione. Nel 1937 si è trasferito a San Antonio nel Texas per suonare con un gruppo molto popolare nella zona, quello di Don Albert. Dal 1946 risiede a Santa Barbara in California dove ha diretto dei sui gruppi. Importante musicista e insegnante di New Orleans, uno dei suoi alunni è stato Andrew Morgan che ha avuto da lui lezioni di sax tenore. chiusura

Casa editrice ed etichetta fondata nel 1971 da Ron Jewson e Norman Stevens, per ristampare annate di jazz dagli LP. Il tecnico incaricato dell’operazione John R.T.Davies, che ha restaurato e trasferito anche materiale dai 78°. Leader di uno dei gruppi storici del gospel i “Five Blind Boys Of Alabama”. E’ stato il miglior ambasciatore delle atmosfere della chiesa afroamericana. FOUNTAIN PETE (CL)

New Orlenas, Louisiana. 3/7/1930.

Per quaranta anni questo clarinettista è stato fra i musicisti più conosciuti degli Stati Uniti con quasi 50 album pubblicati è commercialmente quello che più si è realizzato. E’ stato avviato agli studi della musica sin da bambino, ha suonato nel 1942 il clarinetto nella banda della scuola. Nel 1948 è arrivato il primo impegno importante con la Junior Dixieland Jazz Band ed in seguito nel 1949 con la New Orleans International City Dixielanders diretta da Phil Zito. Ha suonato con i Basin Street Six gruppo molto attivo nei locali di Bourbon Street ed in seguito sempre con loro in quelli di Chicago. Ha lavorato con i Dukes Of Dixieland, con Al Hirt, con Sharkey Bonano, con Tony Almerico. E’ andato in California nell’orchestra di Lawrence Welk di cui è stato coleader ed ha raggiunto la celebrità. Ha partecipato a molte trasmissioni televisive. Negli anni’50 ha messo su un’altra orchestra con la quale ha lavorato a Los Angeles e con la quale ha registrato moltissimi dischi. Negli anni’60 è ritornato a lavorare nella sua città. Clarinettista dalle ottime doti tecniche, non accompagnate dalla giusta carica di jazz e della creatività propria di questa musica. Egli soffia ferocemente nel clarinetto dimentico molte volte di suonare uno strumento dolcissimo.

Gruppo vocale attivo a Los Angeles. Nel 1937 si sono esibiti insieme ad un altro gruppo vocale i Five Jones Boys, creando una vera big band vocale. chiusura

FOUR BROTHERS.

Titolo di un brano composto ed arrangiato da Jimmy Giuffre per Woody Herman ed eseguito per la prima volta ad Hollywood il 27 dicembre 1947. E’ anche il soprannome dato ai suoi solisti che per la prima volta lo hanno eseguito nell’orchestra di Woody Herman. Essi sono Sam Marowitz, Herbie Stewart, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Serge Shaloff. Ha costituito per l’epoca una vera innovazione, un impasto sonoro nuovo. La vera origine di questo speciale sound dei quattro sax tenori è stata del gruppo di Tommy De Carlo, tra i quali c’erano appunto Getz, Steward e Giuffre ed il cui arrangiatore era Gene Roland che quindi è il vero artefice di questa novità ed il creatore di questo particolare sound. Naturalmente lo stesso brano è stato eseguito nel corso degli anni da Herman con solisti diversi cercando sempre di conservare il sound originale.
