BOSSO FABRIZIO (TP)
Torino, Italia. 5/11/1973.
Suo padre è stato un trombettista dilettante e suo nonno un batterista; egli è stato un bambino prodigio, a quindici anni si è diplomato al Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi di Torino. Nel 1990 ha vinto una borsa di studio per il St. Mary’s College di Washington D.C. e nel 1991 ha frequentato il corso di Alto Perfezionamento di Saluzzo sotto la guida di Pierre Thibaut. E’ cresciuto musicalmente ascoltando i dischi di Clifford Brown, ma il suo idolo è stato Wynton Marsalis. Nel 1993 ha fatto parte dell’Orchestra del “Paese Degli Specchi” che è stata diretta tra gli altri anche da George Russell, Carle Bley e Kenny Wheeler. Ha collaborato con Paolo Sabatino, con Marcello Rosa, nella ”Dada Orchestra” di Marco Visconti Prasca, ha inciso con la “Jazz Convention”. Ha fatto parte della “Jazz Art Orchestra”, della Big Band di Gianni Basso, dell’orchestra dell’AMJ e della Carnegie Hall Jazz Band di Jon Faddis in sostituzione di Randy Brecker. Ha inciso anche con Tullio De Piscopo, i Blanco e i Jazz Convention. Nel 1995 ha insegnato al Conservatorio Piccinni di Bari.

Nel 1931 ha debuttato con Terence Holder e poi ha suonato con Bennie Moten. In seguito ha frequentato la Xavier University di New Orleans. Si è trasferito nel 1934 in Louisiana dove ha suonato con Jon Robichaux, Ernie Fields, Clarence Olden, Charlie Creath, Fate Marable. Nel 1938 si è trasferito a New York dove ha suonato con Don Redman, Cab Calloway, Edgar Hayes, con Hot Lips Page nel 1941, con il quale ha collaborato anche come arrangiatore. Ha diretto un suo gruppo allo Small’s Paradise di Harlem, ha suonato poi con Lionel Hampton e con Rex Stewart. Ha scritto arrangiamenti per Artie Shaw, Jack Teagarden, Louis Prima, Paul Whiteman. Dal 1945 ha guidato con molto successo un suo gruppo, ha venduto montagne di dischi dei celebri brani: Flamingo e Moonglow. E’ stato il primo ad attingere a piene mani al rhythm and blues. Musicista dallo stile ritmico trascinante e pieno di mordente, sostenuto da una grande tecnica, dal timbro di voce volutamente rauco. Tra i componenti delle sue orchestre troviamo John Coltrane esordiente.

Forse è stata la più famosa del trio delle “Boswell Sisters”. E’ cresciuta musicalmente in ambiente classico, subito sedotta dal jazz e dai blues di Bessie Smith, ha messo su con le sorelle un trio vocale. Nella sua voce di contralto risuona lo spirito della sua città. Ha spesso collaborato con l’orchestra diretta da Bert Ambrose nel 1935. Al suo modo di impostare la voce ed al suo modo di interpretare i songs si è ispirata Ella Fitzgerald. Quando il trio si è sciolto Connie ha iniziato la carriera di cantante solista cambiando il nome in Conee e anche se è stata afflitta dalla poliomelite si è esibita su di una sedia a rotelle. Il successo le ha arriso sia sulla scena che nel cinema ed è diventata una delle cantanti più importante della Decca.

Trio vocale in auge negli anni ’30 e’40. Trio nato negli anni ’20 a New Orleans, composto da tre sorelle, che hanno avuto subito attirato l’attenzione ed il successo e, per l’epoca, hanno registrato un numero considerevole di dischi e partecipato a numerosi film hollywodiani. Le tre sorelle, strumentiste di musica da camera, sono state coinvolte dalla musica della loro città di natale. Hanno lavorato prima in spettacoli di vaudeville e poi in quelli radiofonici. Sul piano musicale, hanno avuto una grande qualità nella impostazione e nella miscelazione delle voci, con sapiente delicatezza. Le sorelle Boswell disponevano della padronanza sulla scena, in virtù delle esperienze fatte negli spettacoli di varietà e l’esuberanza, il ritmo ed il fraseggio del jazz. Del resto lo testimoniano la scelta dei loro accompagnatori abituali: Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, Benny Goodman, Bunny Berigan, i fratelli Dorsey, nell’orchestra dei quali Martha ha anche suonato spesso il pianoforte. Hanno attestato il loro impegno per la musica della loro città natale e l’hanno valorizzata con le loro interpretazioni.

Musicista svedese che ha guidato il gruppo fusion “Bolon Bata”. Profondamente immersi nel folklore africano, con impegno anche politico ed ecologico nei testi. Ma si ha l’impressione che l’Africa resti sempre molto lontana dalla Svezia. Ha studiato oltre che in Svezia anche nel Mali, in Tunisia e in Marocco. E’ stato per diverso tempo collaboratore di Don Cherry. Ha suonato anche con Tetuzi Akiyama, Mats Gustafsson, Frank Lowe ed altri.

Ha suonato con Gene Krupa, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Sonny Dunham, nel 1944 è entrato nell’orchestra di Boyd Raeburn nella quale si è messo in luce. Nel 1945 ha organizzato una sua orchestra nella quale ha cercato di sviluppare le idee già maturate con Raeburn. Purtroppo non vi è riuscito in pieno per dei limiti nella direzione dell’orchestra e per carenze negli arrangiamenti.

Chitarrista poco conosciuto, nato in una famiglia nella quale vi sono diversi musicisti a cominciare da Perry Botkin Jr., musicista, produttore e compositore, mentre Perry Botkin Sr. È stato il banconista di Spike Jones. A 19 anni ha suonato nella Hale Byers Band e poi nella grande orchestra di Paul Whiteman. Ha accompagnato Bing Crosby dal 1933 in sostituzione di Eddie Lang, del quale ricorda molto il modo di suonare. Ha suonato con Jack Teagarden, con Red Nichols, con Louis Armstrong. Alla radio ha accompagna ancora Bing Crosby, poi Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor e Judy Garland. Non disprezza di collaborare con gruppi di giovani.

Egli riesce a trarre dallo strumento sonorità originali piene di fascino. Non sempre la sua musica è improvvisata, nonostante ciò la stessa non perde di spontaneità e di freschezza. La tendenza è quella tradizionale moderna.

Le sue prime composizioni che risalgono al 1899 sono dei raffinati pre-ragtime. E’ arrivato a New York nel 1908 ed ha continuato a scrivere musica che riflette l’immagine della sua terra d’origine. Ha inizia a lavorare anche come arrangiatore, ma continua ad essere un meraviglioso compositore di ragtime. Dalla sua penna sono usciti i classici : Olfd Crow Rag, Wiggle Rag, Texas Steer Rag e Pianophiends Rag e molti altri. La sua ultima composizione è stata Boomerang Rag. Ha fondato anche una società editoriale nel 1914, ha lavorato per il vaudeville, ha diretto cori, ha scritto opere in miniatura con gruppi da camera e tre o quattro cantanti.
BOTTI PAOLO (VIOLA)
Uno dei pochi jazzisti italiani ad usare la viola, strumento che con il suo timbro da contralto drammatico sembra adatto in modo particolare al jazz. Si esibisce anche al banjo ed al dobro. Strumentista dallo stile originale, asciutto e preciso, capace di assemblare in maniera sorprendente : musica da camera, libera improvvisazione e swing.

Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a cinque anni e ha studiato la tromba al conservatorio di Parigi. Ha esordito con i Tin Pan Stompers nel 1967, ha suonato poi con Bill Coleman e con il sassofonista Marc Laferriere dal 1967 al 1970. Dal 1972 è entrato nel gruppo di Maxim Saury. Nel 1984 ha partecipato alla Grande Parade du Jazz di Nizza, insieme a Doc Cheatham, Pee Wee Erwin, Joe Newman e Harry Edison. Nel 1990 ha partecipato al Santa Fe Jazz Party e ha registrato per la prima volta a suo nome a New York. Ha suonato con Warren Vache, con Pierre Boyer, ha accompagnato il cantante Jan Harrington nel 1992, ha suonato con Peter Ecklund, con Boss Queraud e nei Trumpet Spectaculars nel 1995. Ha diretto anche un suo quartetto sul tipo di quello di Ruby Braff insieme al chitarrista Christophe Davot, Nicolas Preslier e il bassista Daniel Amelot. Dal 1997 al 1999 ha codiretto un quintetto con Michel Pastre. Trombettista profondamente influenzato da Braff e Vache.

Ha iniziato a suonare in piccoli gruppi sui palcoscenici del Music Hall, nel 1943 è entrato nell’orchestra di Alix Combelle, ha suonato poi con Jacque Helian, Django Reinardt, con Don Redman, con l’Edward’s Band, Bernard Peiffer, Jack Devial, Aimè Barelli, per il quale ha scritto anche degli arrangiamenti, con James Moody, Kenny Clarke e Charlie Parker. In seguito si è dedicato completamente all’arrangiamento ed alla composizione, anche fuori del jazz. Ha registrato con Don Byas, Tyree Glenn, Bill Coleman ed altri. Uno dei musicisti francesi di scuola moderna più completi e più richiesti dai musicisti americani in tournée europee.

Ha debuttato nel 1922 con Johnny Bayersdorffer, nel 1925 ha suonato con Oliver Naylor, poi nella Dominos Orchestra. E’ seguito un periodo di inattività. Ha ripreso a lavorare durante il periodo del New Orleans revival, con Sharkey Bonano, Johnny Wiggs, Santo Pecora, Tony Almerico, George Girard con i quali ha registrato diversi dischi.
BOUDREAUX JEFF, JEFFREY LYNN. (DR)

Figlio di un clarinettista e band leader abbastanza noto negli anni ’30 e con la big band che ha condotto con Lee Fortier, la “Buddy-Lee Orchestra”ha accompagnato Bob Crosby, Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis ed altri. Egli ha ricevuto le prime lezione di batteria a otto anni ed ha debutto con l’orchestra del padre a 14 anni. Nel 1977 va a New Orleans a studiare alla Loyola University College of Music, dove nel 1981 si è laureato. Ha studiato con diversi maestri privatamente. E’ stato attivo a New Orleans sino al 1990 ed in seguito si è trasferito in Europa a Vienna in Austria. Ha trascorso la giovinezza tra New Roades e New Orleans, dove il nonno batterista è una delle attrazioni della parata di Mardi Gras. Ha studiato la batteria mentre frequenta la scuola. Ha come maestri Ellis Marsalis e Harold Battiste. Ha subito l’influenza di Earl Palmer, del batterista Charles”Hungry”Williams, ma soprattutto da Ed Blackwell. Ha suonato con Duke Burrell, Melvin Lastie e Charlie Fairlie. Ha accompagnato anche grandi del rhythm-and-blues come Professor Longhair, Dr,John e Clarence”Frogman”Henry. Con un gruppo locale ha accompagnato i cantanti Al Hibbler, Dinah Washington e Joe Turner. Ha occupato un posto importante negli studi di registrazione dove lavora con il produttore Allen Toussaint, contribuendo a colorire con lo stile funk le registrazioni di New Orleans degli anni ’60. In seguito si è trasferito in California, dove ha ha accompagnato Sam Cooke, Billy Eckstine, Big Mama Thornton ed ha collaborato con Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Dexter Gordon, Eddie”Lockjaw”Davis e Grove Holmes. Ha studiato teoria musicale ed ha diretto un suo gruppo con il quale ha preso parte al film “Bird”. Ottimo suonatore anche di marimba e timpani.

E’ stato per un certo periodo il pianista di Paul Whiteman, nella cui orchestra ha svolto anche la mansione di compositore ed arrangiatore. Ha scritto anche per il cinema.

Ha studiato musica e canto nel coro della sua chiesa. Ha un ruolo importante nel musical ”One More Time”, che gli ha dato il successo e la fama. Ha fatto parte delle orchestre di Pud Brown, di Danny Baker, di Professor Longhair, di Dr.John ed altre. In seguito si è trasferita in Europa e nel 1983 incontra e sposa il sassofonista tedesco Thomas L’Etienne, con il quale ha messo su il gruppo ”Music frieds” e poi il ”Jazz ensemble”. Negli anni’80 ha frequentato assiduamente molti Festival europei, dove ormai è l’ambasciatrice ufficiale di New Orleans ed è la First Lady della sua musica. Nel 1987 ha iniziato una collaborazione con Humphrey Lyttelton. Cantante dalla voce possente ma estremamente duttile, dote che le consente di spaziare dal blues al cakewalk, dallo spiritual al dixieland. Voce piena di swing e personaggio molto disinvolto sulla scena.

Gruppo di stile New Orleans nato a Milano all’inizio degli anni’60. Nata su iniziativa di Luciano Invernizzi, Bepi Zancan e Fabio Turazzi, nel corso degli anni si sono alternati diversi musicisti dell’area milanese. Ne ha fatto parte anche un trombettista di Foggia, Franco Tolomei e con lui alla tromba il gruppo ha partecipato al Festival Internazionale del Dixieland di Montreux. Nel suo genere è una delle migliori bande europee. Ne hanno fatto parte man mano: il clarinettista Claudio Perelli, il pianista Alberto Bandel, il bassista Renzo Clerici ed il batterista Terenzo Belluzzo. Gruppo che punta soprattutto a far rivivere le atmosfere genuine di New Orleans. Nelle sue incisioni ha avuto modo di ospitare il fior fiore dei musicisti tradizionali come Louis Nelson, Captain John Handy, Manuel Sayles, Percy Humphrey, Alton Purnell, Don Ewell, Thomas Jefferson, Freddie Kohlman, Alvin Alcorn, Andrew Morgan e Kid Thomas. Ha partecipato ai più famosi Festival Internazionali. L’ultima formazione è con Marcello Noia, Guido Cairo, Giacomo Marson, Terenzio Belluzzo, oltre a Zancan e Invernizzi.

Ancora ragazzo si trasferisce con la famiglia a Chicago nel 1957 ed ha iniziato a studiare il clarinetto. In seguito ha studiato con Walter Dyett alla DuSable High School e poi all’America Conservatory of Music. Ha deciso di suonare il sax baritono ed ha iniziato a lavorare in piccoli gruppi di rhtythm-and-blues, alla fine degli anni ’60 è andato in tournée con un gruppo pop. Nel 1974 ha iniziato a collaborare con la AACM nella quale ricoprirà in seguito anche il ruolo di presidente. Ha insegnato composizione nella metà degli anni ’70 alla Governor’s State University. Ha suonato anche con Ed Wilkerson Jr. , nel gruppo di Shadow Vignettes, negli Eight Bold Souls. Ha fondato la “U of C Jazz X-tet” nella Università di Chicago.

Sassofonista della nuova generazione, cioè quelli nati nel 1960. Ha suonato in coppia con il trombettista Mike Mossman, ha fatto parte del gruppo di Horace Silver, ha suonato anche con Michel Camilo, ma soprattutto ha fatto parte di quella fucina di talenti che ha rappresentato il gruppo degli “Out Of The Blue”, con il quale ha anche registrato. Notevole sul piano solistico nel quale si avvertono le influenze di Wayne Shorter, di Joe Henderson e di George Coleman e nella improvvisazione tematica a Sonny Rollins, mentre nella composizione per l’uso delle pause e dello spazio a Wayne Shorter. Nella sua musica ha prediletto i ritmi funky e la modalità, negli assoli ha sfruttato le particolarità melodiche dei pezzi e la loro forza ritmica, ha dimostrato molta capacità nel proporre delle complesse elaborazioni armoniche. Insomma ha tutti i numeri per affermarsi completamente.

Ha iniziato suonando in gruppi di rhythm and blues, è entrato nell’AACM dove ha trovato anche il fratello maggiore Lester. Ha suonato con Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill, Baikida Carroll, Floyd LeFlore, Charles Bobo Dhaw. Dopo una breve parentesi parigina, ha suonato con il fratello nel 1974, con Frank Lowe nel 1975 e con Luther Thomas. Nel 1980 ha creato il suo gruppo”Defunkt” e poi ha suonato con Kahil El’Zabar. Quotato trombonista dell’ultima generazione, dal suono pieno e dagli acuti laceranti, siamo in pieno free.
