RODITI CLAUDIO (TP)
Rio De Janeiro, Brasile. 28/5//1946.
Ha studiato per poco tempo al Conservatorio di Rio e ha preso parte a jam session locali. Nel 1966 ha lavorato a Vienna anche con Frederich Gulda, è stato a Graz in Austria e dopo aver girato l’Europa è tornato in Brasile. Ha lavorato per la musica commerciale e, poi, dal 1967 al 1970 ha studiato alla Berklee School of Music di Boston. Qui ha suonato con Alan Dawson e ha coodiretto una big band con il trombettista Mark Harvey. Nel 1976 è andato a New York, ha suonato con un gruppo brasiliano, ha registrato con Charlie Rouse, con Bob Mover, con Herbie Mann e, dal 1983 al 1991, è stato con l’orchestra di Paquito D’Rivera. Ha suonato con Klaus Ignatzek, con Dizzy Gillespie, e la sua “Gillespie’s United Nation Orchestra”, con Jimmy Heath, con Slide Hampton, con Buddy Montgomery, con Chris Connor, con la “Mann’s Jasil Brazz”, Michele Hendricks, Michael Garvin, Mark Murphy, Gary Bartz, Larry Gales, Greg Abate, McCoy Tyner, Hendricks Meurkens, Ticky Ford, Peter Leitch ed altri. Particolarmente brillante nelle big band. Trombettista di sessione molto richiesto.

RODNEY RED, ROBERT (TP)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 27/9/1927. – Boynton Beach, Florida. 27/5/1994.
Sin dall’infanzia si è dedicato alla musica, perfezionandosi alla Mastbaum Music School. Ha fatto il suo debutto a tredici anni con un gruppo di ragazzi diretto da Elliot Lawrence e a quindici ha esordito con Jerry Wald. Ha suonato poi con Jimmy Dorsey nel 1945, con Tony Pastor, Benny Goodman, Les Brown, Elliott Lawrence, George Auld, con Gene Krupa nel 1946, con Buddy Rich, con Claude Thornhill nel 1947. Nel 1948 ha fatto parte del second herd di Woody Herman, ha suonato poi con Serge Chaloff. Nel 1949 è riuscito ad appagare il suo sogno suonare con il suo idolo Charlie Parker, che per portarlo in tournée negli Stati del Sud lo ha ribattezzato ”Albino Red”, facendolo passare per un negro albino. Ha suonato con Charlie Ventura nel 1950. Negli anni’50 ha avuto dei seri problemi di droga, è rimasto per un periodo inattivo. Dopo essersi curato ha ripreso l’attività ed ha inciso con Lee Konitz, Cliff Jordan, Sammy Davis Jr. e Oscar Pettiford. Si è trasferito a Las Vegas dove ha suonato con Count Basie. In seguito si è stabilito in Danimarca. Nel 1993 i lettori della rivista Down Beat lo hanno proclamato il miglior musicista dell’anno. Solista dalla tecnica molto personale, dalla sonorità esplosiva, è stato il partner ideale per Charlie Parker.

Si è diplomato all’Accademia Cattolica Teologica di Varvasia nel 1980. Dal 1984 al 1987 ha guidato un suo quartetto, “In Tradition”. E’ andato negli Stati Uniti, dove ha studiato al Berklee College of Music di Boston dove si è diplomato nel 1990 e qui ha avuto l’opportunità di accompagnare Joshua Redman, Geoff Keezer, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jorge Rossy, Walter Davis ed altri. Tornato in patria a guidato il gruppo “Mingus Mingus”dal 1992 al 1997. Nel 1998 nel “Grappelling Trio”, è stato membro del “Dream Seller Quartet”e nel 1997 ha fatto parte del “World String Trio”. Ha collaborato con Janusz Muniak, Tomasz Szukalski, Janusz Skowron ed ha insegnato alla Scuola di Musica Fryedyk Chopin di Varsavia.

Musicista di sezione molto dotato, ha difatti lavorato con diverse grandi orchestre dove le sue qualità sono state molto apprezzate. Ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Lionel Hampton nel 1962, con Maynard Ferguson nel 1964, con Woody Herman nel 1965, con Gerald Wilson nel 1966. Durante il suo soggiorno a New York alla fine degli anni’60 ha collaborato con Roland Kirk, con Frank Foster, Pharoah Sanders, Roy Haynes. Nel 1973 è stato con Stan Kenton e con il gruppo di Harold Land.

E’ arrivato a New York con la famiglia quando aveva due anni e da ragazzo ha iniziato a suonare strumenti a percussione. Ha studiato la batteria con Freddie Waits nel 1978 ed ha iniziato la professione con i “Dr.Buzzard’s Original Savanah Band”. Dal 1986 al 1988 è stato il batterista di John Laurie, ha fatto parte del gruppo “Jazz Passengers” e alla fine degli anni ’80 ha collaborato con Henry Threadgill, poi con Cassandra Wilson ed il pianista cantante Dr.John. Ha partecipato a diversi concerti a New York e ha lavorato per diverse case discografiche registrando con John Zorn nel 1992. Nel 1997 ha suonato con Marc Ribot, con Bill Ware e Brad Jones. Ha anche lavorato nel campo del pop con il gruppo “Brooklyn Funk Essentials” e con i “Tiny Universe”. Ha collaborato con il sassofonista Karl Denson.

E’ arrivato a New York nell’agosto del 1928 ed ha fatto parte del gruppo di Jelly Roll Morton sino al 1930. In seguito ha suonato e registrato con Benny Carter nel 1933, con la Carter’s Band diretta da Spike Hughes, con Don Redman dal 1938 al 1940, con Alberto Spocaras nel 1939, con Skeets Tolbert, ha accompagnato la cantante Frances Brock, con Kat Cowens nel 1946. Negli anni’50 oltre a suonare con Johnny Coles nel 1953, con Louis Armstrong nel 1961, con Doc Cheatham, ha insegnato pianoforte. Nel 1961 è stato per breve tempo con Louis Armstrong al posto di Billy Kyle. Ha suonato con Frank Williams, ha registrato con un piccolo gruppo in ricordo di Spike Hughes.

Noto anche come El o Reco Reco. Ha imparato a suonare il trombone alla Alpha Boys School. Nel 1961 si è trasferito in Inghilterra, dove ha iniziato a lavorare in orchestrine di reggae e nel 1976 ha registrato il suo primo disco. Nel 1996 ha fatto parte della Jools Holland,s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, con la quale ha partecipato a diversi Festival Europei.

Anche avendo studiato il pianoforte ha iniziato a suonare la fisarmonica a Torino dove ha conosciuto Francesco Ferrari. Nel 1944 va a Firenze e qui ritrova Ferrari che lo ha assunto come pianista nella nascente orchestra dell’EIAR. Ha svolto una attività jazzistica in due gruppi composti da colleghi d’orchestra uno sullo stile del King Cole trio e l’altro alla Goodman. Nel 1949 si è trasferito a Roma sempre con Ferrari ed è passato poi alla televisione anche come arrangiatore, che in seguito è diventata la sua sola attività. Nel 1973 ha partecipato al Jazz Concerto della RAI TV insieme a Conte Candoli, Frank Rosolino e Tony Scott.

Compositore, direttore d’orchestra e trombettista. Ha studiato pianoforte classico ed ha iniziato a suonare del jazz con Svend Asmussen nel 1937. Ha registrato in duo con Niels Foss, dal 1940 al 1946 ha diretto un suo quintetto e nel 1950 è stato direttore del programma di jazz alla Statsradiofonien, diventata poi nel 1959 la Danmarks Radio, sino al 1980. Ha pubblicato degli studi jazz per pianoforte molto importanti.

Chitarrista considerato uno dei massimi talenti dell’ultima generazione e oggi uno dei migliori in circolazione. Ha collaborato sinora con i “Lost Tribe”, con John Zorn, con Uri Caine, con David Binney, con Cassandra Wilson, con Regina Carter, attualmente fa parte del gruppo di Michael Brecker. Ha anche collaborato con Nora Jones, Walter Becker, John Patitucci, Paul Simon ed altri. Musicista molto versatile che ben si disimpegna in molte forme del jazz modern.

Suo padre violinista e sua madre pianista ed un fratello maggiore arrangiatore, è cresciuta a Washington e giovanissima è entrata in una compagnia di vaudeville e suona nei campus durante gli studi. Si trasferisce in California dove a Hollywood nel 1942 è entrata nell’orchestra di Woody Herman, sia come solista che come cantante. Nel 1943 lasciato Herman è ha messo mette su una sua orchestra che non ha avuto grande fortuna ed è stata sciolta nel 1945. Ha lavorato con Jerry Wald e nel 1946 ha fatto un altro tentativo di metter su una propria orchestra, purtroppo naufragato anch’esso.

Ha avuto il suo momento magico nel 1920, fa parte della Halway House Band di Abbie Brunis, suona in seguito con i fratelli Brunies e nel 1940 con Harry Shields alla Doghouse di New Orleans. Caposcuola dei batteristi bianchi degli anni’20.
ROGERS ERNEST (DR)

Il primo lavoro importante gli è stato offerto nel 1910 da Edward Clem. Nel 1913 è entrato nella Crescent Band di Jack Carey, nel 1914 ha suonato con Richard M.Jones e dal 1915 al 1918 ha suonato nella Silver Leaf Orchestra. In seguito ha fatto parte della “Lyons Club Brass Band”, della Young Tuxedo, nel 1946 ha suonato con Bunk Johnson e con Big Eye Louis Nelson. E’ stato il primo batterista di New Orleans ha suonare in 4/4 ed ha apportato anche modifiche al suo strumento aggiungendo i piatti ed un altro rullante. Batterista molto popolare e tecnicamente ottimo. Nipote di Buck Rogers primo batterista dei Dukes of Dixieland.
ROGERS JIMMY, JAMES A LANE. (G-VC)
Ruleville, Mississippi. 3/6/1924. – Ruleville, Mississippi. 19/12/1997.
Notevole cantante di blues originario del Delta, dallo stile vocale relaxed e chitarrista ritmico molto ruvido ed essenziale. Ha fatto parte della scena umana e musicale nella vita notturna delle due coste di Chicago. Ha fatto parte della prima band di Muddy Waters nel 1947, con il quale ha regalato autentiche pietre miliari in questo genere. Ha collaborato anche con Little Walter e Baby Face Leroy. Il suo linguaggio di riferimento detto “Chicago Blues” è stato un modello per molti altri bluesmen. Alla fine degli anni quaranta ha inciso i primi capolavori con la Regal e la Apollo. Nel 1961 ha lasciato la musica per ritirarsi a vita privata. Otto anni dopo però è tornato sulle scene con la collaborazione del pianista Bob Riedly con un blues elettrico nel sound e nello spirito, ma sempre essenziale e pulito, scevro da inutili acrobazie virtuosistiche. In seguito ha continuato a suonare ed incidere con molti grandi del blues tra cui K. Taylor e W. Mabon nel 1973.

Da autodidatta ha collaborato con Mike Osborne, John Stevens, Stan Tracey, Keith Tippett, John Etheridge, Elton Dean, Louis Moholo, Evan Parker, Dudu Pukwana, Derek Bailey, Paul Rutherford, il sassofonista Simon Picard ed altri. Nel 1984 ha fatto parte del trio di Harry Beckett in tour nel Middle East, poi dal 1984 del gruppo dei “Tenor Tonic” insieme a Alan Skidmore, Paul Dunmall e Tony Levin, nel 1986 è andato in Sud America con il gruppo di Red House. Dal 1986 al 1988 ha suonato negli Stati Uniti con Joseph Jarman e nel 1990 ha fatto un tour in Texas e ha registrato con un quintetto comprendente Dennis Gonzales, Carlos Ward e Moholo. Nel 1992 ha lavorato in Francia con musicisti europei ed inglesi è stato nel gruppo “Mujician” e nel 1996 ha registrato a Avignon con il quintetto di Sam Rivers.

E’ cresciuto nelle Isole Vergini dall’età di due anni, con la madre organista di chiesa. Ancora bambino ha iniziato a suonare il clarinetto, il pianoforte, le ance, la batteria, la chitarra per fermarsi al contrabasso a 14 anni. Mentre frequenta le scuole superiori ha iniziato a suonare con diversi musicisti a St.Thomas, tra i quali Ron Blake. Nel 1991 ha frequentato la Interlochen Arts Camp nel Michigan e poi il Berklee Colleg of Music di Boston dove si è diplomato nel 1997. Ha guidato un suo trio dal 1994 al 1997, ha collaborato con Betty Carter, Marlon Jordan, Marcus Roberts, Teodross Avery, Carl Allen, Marcus Printup, Roy Hargrove, Eric Reed, Wynton Marsalis. Ha registrato con Nicholas Payton nel 1996, ha suonato con Donald Harrison, con Terrell Stafford, Jesse Davis, Mulgrew Miller, nel trio di Danilo Perez e nel 1998 ha fatto una tournée con Joshua Redman. Da freelance ha suonato con Billy Pierce, Johnny Griffin, Doc Cheatham, Phil Woods, Clark Terry. Giovane contrabassista dell’ultima generazione.
