STALLINGS MARY (VC)

San Francisco, California. 8/4/1939.

Ha iniziato a cantare durante le prove del gruppo bop dello zio Orlando Stallings. All’età di 15 anni ha cantato in un club del quartiere di Fillmore il “Blue Mirror”. In seguito lavorando nel “Club Blackhawk” ha incontrato Cal Tjader che la ha presentata alla etichetta Fantasy che vincola con un contratto. All’epoca la Casa editrice non aveva molto interesse a registrare cantanti, pertanto Mary registrò un solo album nel 1961. Comunque il successo del disco le permise di entrare nel circuito della West Coast. Ha lavorato accompagnata da Victor Feldman, Red Mitchell, Teddy Edwards. Si è esibita al Festival di Monterey con il gruppo di Dizzy Gillespie ed in seguito è andata in tournée con lo show di Billy Eckstine. Ha lavorato con Earl Hines e Grover Mitchell e nel 1969 è entrata a far parte dell’orchestra di Count Basie. Ha registrato accompagnata da Gene Harris, Gery Wiggins, Harry Sweet Edison, T. Carson. Nei primi anni ’70 si è ritirata per dedicarsi alla figlia. Negli anni ’80 è ritornata sulla breccia e inciso per la Concord. Cantante dalla voce molto vicina a quelle di Carmen McRae nei toni bassi ed a Nancy Wilson per gli alti. Ha registrato qualcosa in età matura, evidenziando la sua delicatezza, la sua sensibilità e la sua raffinatezza. Potrebbe essere l’erede delle grandi voci nere, alcune purtroppo scomparse di recente. Eccellente balladeuse, ma anche ottima swinger e soprattutto raconteuse in chiave di blues.

STAMM MARVIN LOUIS (TP)

Menphis, Tennessee. 23/5/1939.

Ha iniziato lo studio della tromba all’età di 12 anni, perfezionandosi successivamente presso la North Texas State University. Ancora agli studi, ha suonato con Buddy Morrow e con la Mellophonium Orchestra di Stan Kenton dal 1961 al 1963, con la quale ha anche registrato diversi dischi. Lasciato Kenton è andato con la big band di Woody Herman dal 1965 al 1966. Dal 1966 al 1972 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra diretta da Thad Jones e Mel Lewis. Pur avendo raggiunto una certa notorietà, nei due decenni successivi, ha svolto la maggior parte della propria attività come musicista di studio. Tra le collaborazioni della prima parte della sua carriera successiva al trasferimento a New York spiccano, quelle con Duke Pearson dal 1967 al 1970, ha registrato con il sestetto di Frank Foster, ha fatto parte con Chick Corea, Richard Davis e Elvin Jones del gruppo “Jazz for a Sunday Afternoon”, ha guidato un suo quartetto, con Benny Goodman dal 1974 al 1975, e diversi tour con Frank Sinatra. Ancora incisioni con Bill Evans, Quincy Jones, Oliver Nelson, Thad Jones, Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Patrick Williams, Michel Legrand, Lena Horne, Paul Desmond e George Benson. Nel 1982 ha partecipato ad un video, Jazz In America: Lincoln Center New York con la Dizzy Gillespie Big Band. Ha fatto parte della grande orchestra di Bob Mintzer, della American Jazz Orchestra di John Lewis ed è stato in tour con la Concert Jazz Band di George Gruntz nel 1987. Ha fatto parte della big band e del quintetto di Louis Bellson, suonando spesso anche con la big band di Maria Schneider. Attivo anche nel campo delle orchestre sinfoniche negli USA e all’estero, tra le sue attuali collaborazioni si segnala quella con Bill Mays, in duo o in quartetto con Rufus Reid e Ed Soph. Ha realizzato diversi dischi di jazz a proprio nome, con varie formazioni comprendenti Bob Mintzer, Terry Clarke, Phil Markowitz, Lincoln Goines, Bill Charlap, Mike Richmond, Bob Malach, Bill Mays, Rufus Reid, Dave Liebman, Stefan Karlsson, Tom Warrington, Eliot Zigmund e John Abercrombie. E’ inoltre attivo in campo didattico, tenendo corsi e seminari negli USA e all’estero.

Pianista ed insegnante, dal 1985 al 1987 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Zvigniew Namyslowski e dell’orchestra diretta da Jan Wroblewski. In seguito ha conseguito il diploma in pianoforte al Berklee College of Music di Boston nel 1990. Ha suonato con l’orchestra di Artie Shaw e poi con Dick Johnson. Tornato in patria ha insegnato al workshop di Pulawy dal 1991 al 1997, nel 1993 ha insegnato alla Hochschule fur Music und Darstellende Kunst di Graz in Austria. Dal 1993 al 1996 ha guidato un suo quartetto, ha suonato con il “Traveling Birds Quintet” e con Piotr Baron, Piotr Wojtasik e Darek Oleszkiewicz. Ha collaborato dal 1996 al 1997 con Scott Hamilton, dal 1996 al 1999 con Art Farmer e dal 1997 al 1998 con Sheila Jordan.

Figlio d’arte, ha studiato a Cracovia dal 1959 al 1969, ma già nel 1962 ha messo su un gruppo con Adam Makowicz “The Jazz Darings”. Ha collaborato dal 1963 al 1967 con Krzysztof Komeda ed insieme si sono esibiti in giro per l’Europa. In seguito ha suonato con il pianista Andrzej Trzaskowski ed ha fatto parte della Studio Jazzowe Polskiego Radia di Radio Polonia. Nel 1968 ha fondato il Tomasz Stank Quintet, nel 1969 con jan Wroblewski. Nel 1970 ha inciso il suo primo disco da leader, ha fatto parte della Globe Unity Orchestra, della European Free Jazz Orchestra, della Don Cherry’s Eternal Rhythm Orchestra e con il gruppo di Michal Urbaniak, ha collaborato con il sassofonista Tomasz Szukalski, con Peter Warren, con Stu Martin, con Edward Vesala. Ha messo su un duo con Makowicz lo ”Stanko-Makowicz Unit”. Nel 1978 ha accompagnato in India Taj Mahal e Karla Caves. Ha inciso anche con George Adams, Rashied Ali, Lester Bowie, Jack DeJohnette, Chico Freeman, James Spaulding, Reggie Workman, Slawomir Kulpowicz, nel 1984 ha fatto parte della NDR big band, in trio con Jack DeJohnette e Rufus Reid, Jan Garbarek, Eddie Gomez, Dave Holland, Howard Johnson, Joachim Kuhn, Gary Peacock, John Surman, Jean-Francois Jenny Clarke, Charlie Mariano. Nel 1984 ha fatto parte dell’Orchestra Of Two Continents di Cecil Taylor. Ha registrato nel 1991 da co-leader con il sassofonista Vlatko Kucan, con il gruppo di Nicolas Simion, nel 1993 in quartetto con Bobo Stenson, Anders Jormin e Tony Oxley ed il quartetto “Simple Acoustic Trio”. In seguito ha guidato il gruppo che ha eseguito musiche di Komeda e nel 1998 un sestetto comprendente John Surman, Dino Salluzzi, Michelle Makarski, Jormin e Christensen. Musicista che negli anni ’60 è stato il primo a sviluppare in Europa il linguaggio avanguardistico e rivoltoso del free jazz d’oltreoceano. Resta l’esponente più rappresentativo del jazz polacco. Trombettista moderno legato alla tendenza della riscoperta della vecchia tradizione.

Gruppo gospel nato a Chicago nell’immediato dopoguerra. Fondato da Roebuck “Pops”Staples. Nato in contrasto con altri gruppi dallo stile più urbano, con i suoi ricordi rurali e sudisti. Nel gruppo oltre al leader Roebuck agivano le figlie Cleotha, Yvonne e Mavis, oltre al figlio Purvis. Gruppo che ha ottenuto il consenso da parte dei seguaci del folk revival, in sintonia con il moderno gospel e nello stesso tempo della tradizione. Il suo fondatore originario del Delta è cresciuto coi suoni dell’autentico blues meridionale, dal canto delicato e arguto, accompagnato da una stringata chitarra. La principale solista del gruppo è la figlia Mavis, che assicura al gruppo la giusta tensione e dinamismo. Un’altra voce importante del gruppo è Dorothy Love Coates, dalla voce di contralto solido e sincopato. Negli anni’60 diventano seguaci della soul music.

Chitarrista cantante originario del Delta, trasferitosi a Chicago e qui ha condotto un gruppo vocale gli”Staple Singers”, insieme ai suoi figli. Un gruppo vocale gospel dal profumo country. Cantante dalla voce tenorile, dal tono tranquillo con una vena di malinconia, si accompagna con la chitarra dalla quale ha un buon sostegno pieno di blues. E’ stato un elemento importante per la musica nera del dopoguerra, muovendosi disinvoltamente tra il sacro ed il profano. Cantante che conserva vivo il messaggio evangelico e sociale della Chiesa battista.

Ha studiato alla North Texas State University dal 1963 al 1967 e ha debuttato nella “North Texas Lab Band” nel 1963. Ha suonato anche con Joe Richman, Teddy Phillips, Ralph Marterie, Buddy Morrow, Don Jacoby, con Woody Herman dal 1972 al 1974 e poi nel 1981, con Neal Nefty nel 1974, con Bill Holman nel 1975. Ha anche insegnato alla National Stage Band Camp.

STARITA AL (SX)

Napoli. Fine 1800.

Fratello di Al e Ruby, nel 1892 era emigrato con la famiglia negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1924 è andato in Inghilterra e nel 1928 gli è stata affidata da Jack Hilton la direzione dell’orchestra per l’Ambassador Club, la “Ray Starita and his Ambassador’s Club”, nella cui formazione suonavano anche i fratelli.

Fratello di Al e Ray, nel 1925 ha suonato con Mal Hallett, nel 1927 si è trasferito anch’egli in Inghilterra dove ha suonato nella stessa orchestra con i fratelli.

La sua carriera è stata quasi completamente al servizio delle grandi orchestre di New York. Ha debuttato in quella di Edgar Dowell e poi ha suonato con Leon Abbey, Ducan Mayers, Bobby Brown, Bobby Lee Billy Butler, Charlie Turner, nei McKinney’s Cotton Pickers, con Chick Webb nel 1926, con Fletcher Henderson dal 1928 al 1933 e nel 1934 è ritornato con Webb. Ha fatto parte anche del gruppo di Tony Pastor nel 1944 e del sestetto di Benny Morton. Ha inciso anche con Benny Carter nel 1931 e con Ella Fitzgerald nel 1939. Musicista dotato di molto swing.

E’ stato il primo a pubblicare partiture di ragtime. Pianista e compositore di ragtime, ma anche di altre canzoni e di una partitura di una operetta “The Vital Question”. Fra le sue composizioni più celebri: Trombone Johnsen-Darktown Capers-Kyrene-Brainstorm Rag-Clover Blossoms Rag.

Nel 1952 si è trasferito a New York e nel 1956 ha suonato con Paul Bley. Nel 1957 ha diretto un suo quintetto. Ha anche suonato ed inciso con Sal Salvador, con Anthony Ortega.

Compagnia discografica ed etichetta, della Starr Piano Company di Richmond nell’Indiana, associata alla Gennett. Il primo disco è stato pubblicato nel 1915 a nome della Starr Company of Canada e dal 1919 come Starr, confezionato in Canada dalla Compo. Ha pubblicato il corposo catalogo della Gennett. Ha avuto delle filiali a Londra, Ontario e Toronto.

Da ragazzo con la famiglia si è trasferito in California, dove ha frequentato l’Università della California di Berkeley. Ha debuttato nel 1910 con Jelly Roll Morton, sostituendolo anche al Rex Cafè di Oakland. Dal 1924 al 1929 è stato il pianista della Curtis Mosby’s Dixieland Blue-Blowers. In seguito ha lavorato come solista, cantando in modo molto enfatico, ottenendo molto successo specialmente alla radio. Nel 1934 si è trasferito a New York, si è legato al cantante Ivan Harold Browning, con il quale ha lavorato nei cabaret, al famoso Cotton Club ed ha fatto un tour in Europa nel 1939. Ha terminato la sua carriera a San Francisco.

STARR KAY, STARKS, KATHRIN LA VERNE (VC)

Cantante bianca del periodo dello swing fine anni ’30. Nasce come cantante country e a dieci anni già si esibisce in uno spettacolino radiofonico a Dallas dove è cresciuta. Ha tredici anni ha debuttato con Joe Venuti con il quale è rimasta sino al 1939. In seguito ha lavorato con Bob Crosby, con Glenn Miller in sostituzione di Barbara Hutton, mettendosi in luce come una voce bluesy. Dal 1943 al 1945 ha lavorato anche con Charlie Barnet con il quale effettuerà incisioni che avranno molto successo e, nello stesso periodo, ha cantato per Wingy Manone. Ha registrato con la Capitol Jazzmen e nella metà degli anni ’40 ha avuto molto successo esibendosi nello stile country. Negli anni’60 e ’70 si è esibita accompagnata ora da Ben Wester e ora da Jimmy Rowles, da Joe Venuti, Barney Bigard, Red Norvo, Red Nichols ed infine ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Count Basie nel 1968. Ha lavorato saltuariamente con un gruppo swing composto dal chitarrista John Basile, dal bassista John Goldsby e dal batterista Ronnie Zito, a Londra e a New York. Negli anni ’90 si è esibita in un revival di famose canzoni del passato. Cantante che ha dimostrato uno swing potente e comunicativo, un vigoroso talento jazzistico ed una buona visione ritmica. Le sue doti indiscusse si sono perse in seguito nella musica commerciale.

Gruppo di voci femminili, formato nel 1958 e composto da cinque cantanti che avevano lasciato il gruppo di Clara Ward. Sono state protagoniste con la loro stella la cantante Marion Williams del musical di Hughes Williams “Black Nativity”, che è stata la loro carta vincente. Con questo spettacolo oltre ad avere un grande successo a Broadway, hanno spopolato in Europa in una favolosa tournée. In seguito hanno avuto un momento di appannamento con l’uscita dal gruppo della loro leader Marion Williams.

Nome usato in sedute di registrazione informali organizzate dalla etichetta Gennett, sulla musica delle feste nel South Side di Chicago. Gruppo messo su e diretto dal pianista Jimmy Blythe nell’agosto del 1927 insieme a Natty Dominique, Johnny Dodds, Baby Dodds, Baldy McDonald. Attivo nel 1927-28 ha registrato una buon numero di dischi. Nel corso degli anni l’organico è stato modificato con l’avvicendamento di altri musicisti, diretto sempre da Blythe sino al nel 1931.

Produttore discografico, proprietario della “Progressive Records”, concorrente di Norman Granz, senza però raggiungere la sua potenza e la sua fama. Di origine greca, ha iniziato presto ad interessarsi di musica, molte volte da ragazzo marinava la scuola per andare ad ascoltare dei concerti di jazz. Ha iniziato l’attività di disc jockey in una stazione radio di New York con il nome d’arte di Gus Grant e nel 1950 ha fondato la “Progressive Records” che in seguito ha venduto, continuando a fare il supervisore.

Ha iniziato a cantare nel gruppo del fratello a Pittsburg ed in seguito ha lavorato in vari club. Ha preso delle lezioni di canto classico e dopo aver ascoltato Dinah Washington si è concentrata nello studio del blues ed ha fatto parte del “Bogey Fowler’s Fantastic Rhythm”, uno spettacolo a Pittsburg. A 18 anni si è trasferita a Detroit dove nel 1950 è entrata nell’orchestra di Joe Westrai. Si è esibita nei club sia in Usa che in Canada e nel 1954 ha registrato dei dischi. Nel 1955 è stata votata dal Down Beat come la migliore delle nuove promesse ed è arrivato il successo. Ha registrato nel 1957 con George Shearing, nel 1959 si è esibita alla Town Hall di New York, ha fatto una tournée con Benny Goodman, ha partecipato al Jazz Festival di Newport e ha registrato diversi dischi. Nel 1965 è andata in Inghilterra e per tre anni ha lavorato con Kurt Edelhagen ed ha partecipato al Deutsches Jazz Festival di Francoforte sul Meno. Tornata negli Stati Uniti ha registrato due album di soul-jazz e gospel. Ha sposato il musicista Al Barrymore ed ha assunto il nome arabo di Aliyad Arabia, essendosi convertita alla religione mussulmana. Ha continuato a lavorare sino agli anni ’90, registrando e esibendosi nei club. Artista che rivisita la Washington e la Vaughan in un livello senz’altro inferiore. Voce melodrammatica, esasperata sino al pianto. Artista molto versatile, si muove con disinvoltura dal jazz al R&B, al soul ed al gospel. Fa parte della numerosa famiglia di cantanti della Capitol.

STAUFFER TEDDY, STAUFFIFERE ERNEST HENRY (DIR)

Morat am Murtensee, Svizzera. 2/5/1909. – Acapulco, Messico. 27/8/1991.

Ha suonato il sassofono ed il violino a Berna nel 1927 e nel 1929 ha lavorato in Germania con una sua orchestra la “Teddy and his Band” che è diventata la “Original Teddies” nel giugno del 1929. Nel 1930 ha diretto una orchestra su di una linea di transatlantici e nel 1936 ha lavorato a Berlino dove ha anche registrato dei dischi. Orchestra richiesta sia in Germania che in Svizzera e durante la seconda guerra mondiale ha suonato a Zurigo. Nel 1939 ha formato un altro gruppo riprendendo il vecchio nome di “Original Teddies”. Nel 1941 è andato in Messico ad Acapulco de Juarez, dove ha aperto un suo club, e sporadicamente registrando in Messico, Los Angeles, Zurigo e negli anni ’70 ha lavorato negli studi radio e televisivi di Londra e Berlino.

STEAK FACE.

Soprannome dato da Louis Armstrong a Sidney Catlett o “Big Sid” in occasione di un suo lungo assolo di batteria eseguito durante un concerto degli “All Stars” di Armstrong alla Synphony Hall di Boston il 30 novembre 1947. Il brano era “Steak Face”.

STEARNS W. MARSHALL.

Cambridge, Massachusetts. 18/10/1908. – Key West, Florida. 18/12/67.

Insegnante di inglese medieovale all’ Hunter College di New York. Fondatore dell’Institute of Jazz Studies. La sua enorme collezione di dischi, di libri e di riviste è stata trasferita negli anni’60 alla Rutgers University. La sua carriera di critico di jazz, che è stata per lui una attività secondaria, è iniziata nel 1934 con il Down Beat, quando era ancora studente alla Yale University. In giovinezza ha per qualche tempo anche suonato il sassofono in piccoli complessi, prima di dedicarsi allo studio della legge e delle lettere. E’ stato uno dei primi e forse tra i migliori critici americani di jazz. Noto musicologo e critico di jazz, ha pubblicato ”The Story of Jazz” 1957. E’ stato lui a consigliare il Dipartimento di Stato Americano ad organizzare la famosa tournée di carattere propagandistico della grande orchestra di Dizzy Gillespie nel medio oriente.

Musicista che ha studiato e suonato diversi strumenti a fiato, anche se il preferito è stato la tuba. Ha debuttato nel 1958 con il batterista Benny Bennett, dal 1959 al 1960 con Aimè Barelli, nel 1960 con Nat”King”Cole dal 1960 al 1962 con il gruppo “T4”di Raymond Fonseque. Ha lavorato a Parigi con Raymond Sabaritch, con Ivan Julien, con Jacques Denjean, Ivan Jullien, Michel Legrand, Michel Colombier. Ha collaborato con Sonny Grey, Slide Hampton, Dexter Gordon, con Sammy Davis Jr. e il cantante Claude Nougaro. Nel 1978 ha registrato un disco solo alla tuba. Ha accompagnato regolarmente dal 1973 al 1983 il cantante Claude Nouguaro, ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Claude Cagnasso, con Martial Solal nel 1980, con Bob Quibel dal 1981 al 1985, con Gerard Bandini dal 1986 al 1994, nel 1989 con Jay McShann. Ha fatto parte del gruppo di free-jazz “Onztet” di Caratini-Fosset, con Michel Portal e negli “Hamsa Music” di Richard Raux. Ha scritto per gruppi di ottoni e ha guidato nel 1981 insieme al fratello Franck lo “Steckar Tubapack” con quattro tube ed una percussione, con i suoi originali arrangiamenti. Ha guidato anche l’”Elephant Tuba Horde” nel 1987, la “Steckar Trinity” nel 1989. Musicista che ha anche avuto molto successo nella musica popolare nonché come insegnante.

STEEL DRUM.

Strumento a percussione originario di Trinidad, ricavato di solito da un barile vuoto di petrolio, molto in voga tra gli anni ’30 e gli anni ’40, oggetto facilmente reperibile e poco costoso specie in anni di depressione. Nel jazz è stato usato occasionalmente negli anni ’70 ed un esponente di questo strumento è Andy Narell, di solito usato nel jazz-latino e nel jazz-rock.

STEELE COLIN (TP)

Musicista scozzese, seguace dell’hard bop, che insaporisce con un pizzico di esotismo nordico, con il folklore locale. Egli ripropone il linguaggio fondamentale della musica afroamericana inserendo in essa la propria tradizione musicale e ne viene fuori una musica dalla freschezza inedita e dalle formule ritmiche e armoniche di valore universale.

Soprannominato il “Professore” avendo frequentato regolarmente studi musicali al Conservatorio del New England, cosa molto rara per l’epoca. Ha iniziato l’attività nel 1926 con i “Savoy Bearcats”, in seguito si è esibito a New York al “Bamboo Inn” con il banjonista Henry Saparo sino al 1927 quando ha guidato una sua orchestra, nella quale ha riunito diversi ottimi musicisti. Nel 1931 ha fatto una tournée con Pike Davis e poi è entrato nell’orchestra di Chick Webb, con la quale prenderà parte ad una serie di incisioni di successo ed è rimasto con Webb sino al 1936. E’ stato il partner preferito dalla cantante Ethel Waters.

STEELE SILAS (VC)

Marengo County, Alabama. 1913. – Los Angeles, California. 1987.

Cantante, voce solista dei “Famous Blue Jay Singers”, quartetto vocale popolare negli anni ’30. Questo gruppo ha aperto la strada all’hard gospel dei gruppi post bellici. Steele dalla voce robusta, d’acciaio, dall’impatto aggressivo. Dieci anni più tardi con l’ingresso nel gruppo di Charles Bridges, Steele ha potuto esplodere tutta la sua passionalità. In seguito ha fatto parte del gruppo degli “Spirit Of Menphis”prima di lasciare l’attività nel 1956.

Dopo aver girovagato per l’Europa, nel 1964 è diventato il pianista titolare al Montmarte di Copenaghen. Dal 1968 al 1975 ha lavorato nella swing band di Arnvid Meyers. Ha diretto anche suoi gruppi, il “Jazz Incorporated”e l’”U.S.Danes”con Brew Moore. Nel 1967 ha suonato nella “N.J.S.’s Beatkapel”. Ha avuto modo di incidere ed esibirsi con Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, Ray Nance, Vic Dickenson, Roy Eldridge, Cat Anderson, J.C.Higginbotham e Lucky Thompson. Ha avuto anche mansioni di compositore ed arrangiatore nella Radio Danese.

Compagnia discografica ed etichetta fondata da Nils Winther a Copenhagen in Danimarca nel 1972. Il primo disco registrato è stato con Jackie McLean al Montmartre Jazzhus. In seguito il suo catalogo è stato orientato più al bop europeo, senza però tralasciare i musicisti più rappresentativi d’oltreoceano. Per facilitare le vendite negli Stati Uniti è stata fondata la Steeplechase production a Chicago nel 1978. In Danimarca è stata la più importante importatrice di molte etichette europee, come la ECM, Enja, Circle e Black Saint.

STEFANSKI JAMUSZ, MARIA (DR)

Cracovia, Polonia. 14/6/1946.

Ha studiato percussione alla Fryderik Chopin School of Music e nelle scuole superiori di Cracovia, diplomandosi nel 1972. Ha debuttato con Zbigniew Seifert con il quale ha suonato dal 1965 al 1969, ha suonato e registrato con Tomasz Stanko nel 1967 e nel 1969 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra Studio Jazzowe Polskiego Radia (Radio Jazz Studio Polacca) con Jan Wroblewski. Nel 1973 è entrato nel gruppo dei “Free Sound” di M.Keller. Nel 1975 una breve parentesi per studiare al Berkley College Of Music. Ha registrato con Hans Koller e nel 1978 ha fatto parte di un quartetto cooperativo, il “Quartet”. Ha lavorato in Austria con la Vienna Art Orchestra, ha fatto dei tour con Leszek Zadlo. Nel 1993 ha insegnato alla Università Johannes-Gutemberg di Mainz in Germania. Nel 1982 è stato eletto miglior batterista polacco.

STEGMEYER BILL, WILLIAM JOHN (SA)

Detroit, Michigan. 8/10/1916. – Long Island, New York. 19/8/1968.

Durante gli studi al Transylvania College ha studiato insieme a Billy Butterfield ed insieme a lui è entrato nel 1937 nella “Austin Wylie’s Band, nella quale ha avuto modo di mettersi in evidenza anche come arrangiatore. Ha fatto il dirigente a Radio Detroit, nel 1938 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Glenn Miller e nel 1939 di quella di Bob Crosby. Nel 1941 è arrivato a New York è ha scritto arrangiamenti per Paul Lavalle, nel 1944 ha collaborato con Yank Lawson, poi con Butterfield con il quale ha inciso dei buoni dischi e nel 1945 ha organizzato una sua orchestra con la quale ha lavorato al “Kelly’s Stable”. Nel 1946 Butterfield lo ha richiamato con lui usandolo soprattutto come arrangiatore. In seguito si è votato quasi completamente al campo del pop e per la TV. E’ ritornato a fare jazz con Wild Bradley e con la Lawson/Haggart. Le registrazioni alle quali ha preso parte restano dei documenti irripetibili del dixieland degli anni ’50 e ’60.

STEIG JEREMY (FL)

New York. 23/9/1942.- Giappone, 13/4/2016.

Ascoltava dischi di jazz dall’età di sei anni, a 11 ha studiare il flauto ed ha debuttato a 15. Nel 1961 ha suonato con Paul Bley e Gary Peacock. E’ rimasto inattivo per circa due anni in seguito ad un incidente. Nel 1963 ha inciso ”Flute Fever” con Denny Zeitlin, Ben Tucker e Ben Riley. In seguito ha lavorato nel pop, in gruppi di jazz rock ed in quelli elettronici, nel contempo sono numerose le collaborazioni nel jazz: con Art Blakey, James Moody, Sahib Shihab, Chris Hinze. Ha inciso con il cantante Richie Havens, con Joe Chambers, Nat Adderley, Joachim Kuhn, con la Jones/Lewis. Ha registrato degli interessanti duetti da camera con il bassista Eddie Gomez. E’ stato uno dei primi musicisti di jazz a farsi coinvolgere dal rock, dotato di una eccellente tecnica e uno dei flautisti jazz più originali, è riuscito ad armonizzare la voce sporca o l’ultrasoffio dello stile di Kirk con un controllo più agile dello strumento.

Violinista formatosi alla scuola classica si è dedicato anche al jazz ed al rock. Nel campo classico ha lavorato freelance in molti gruppi da camera ed orchestre di New York, registrando anche con grandi esecutori classici. Ha partecipato anche come solista a spettacoli di Broadway, al Lincoln Center. Nel campo della musica pop rock nel primi anni ’70 ha fondato i “Commander Cody And His Lost Planet Airmen”, ha lavorato con Bob Dylan ed altri e nel 1978 ha ricevuto il Grammy per la migliore composizione country. Nel jazz ha collaborato con Winton Marsalis, con Paquito D’Rivera, Vince Giordano, Ken Peplowski, Bob Wilber, Harold Ashby ed altri. Ha partecipato anche a celebri colonne sonore di film. Ha anche dedicato un tributo in occasione della morte di Joe Venuti.

Già a 17 anni si è esibito alla Town Hall con Don Byas e Specs Powell. A 18 anni da professionista ha lavorato con Rudy Williams e con Roy Haynes. Dal 1946 al 1951 ha ripreso a studiare, in seguito durante il servizio militare in Giappone ha suonato con Toshiko Akiyoshi. Tornato dal servizio militare nel 1955 ha suonato con Teddy Charles, poi con Les Elgart, nel 1956 con Larry Soon, con Claude Thornhill e con Sam Donahue nel 1958. In seguito ha sfruttato il suo diploma di clarinetto e di maestro di musica per dedicarsi quasi completamente all’insegnamento. Ha diretto un gruppo insieme a Warren Fitzgerald ed inciso con Phil Woods.

STEIN JOHNNY, JOHN HUNTHA (DR)

New Orleans, Louisiana. 15/6/1895. – New Orleans, Louisiana. 30/9/1962.

Nel 1916 ha guidato un gruppo di musicisti bianchi in club di New Orleans e, con la spinta di un impresario, si trasferiscono a Chicago e vengono scritturati al Schiller’s Café nel South Side come “Stein’s Jass Band”. Nel gruppo figurano Nick La Rocca, Alcide Numez, Eddie Edwards, l’unico a conoscere la musica ed Henry Ragas, gruppo che in seguito ha costituito il nucleo della “Original Dixieland Jazz Band”, meno lo stesso Stein. Tornato a New Orleans ha fondato una nuova formazione che però non ha avuto lo stesso successo. Nel 1920 si è recato a New York dove ha lavora con Jimmy Durante e poi con Eddie Edwards.

STEIN LOU, LOUIS (P)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 22/4/1922.

Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte da bambino.Nel 1938 ha suonato con Buddy De Franco, Charlie Ventura e Bill Harris. Nel 1941 ha lavorato con Ray McKinley e durante il servizio militare ha fatto parte della Glen Miller’s Army Air Force Band. Nel 1946 è tornato con McKinley, con il quale ha anche registrato e poi con il gruppo di Charlie Ventura con il quale è rimasto ed ha inciso per diversi anni. Ha suonato poi con Benny Goodman, con Benny Harris nel 1949, con Cootie Williams nel 1957, Jay Jay Johnson, Kai Winding, Neal Hefty, Joe Venuti, si è esibito al Condon’s Club di New York e ha fatto parte della World Greatest Jazz Band nel 1985. Musicista molto incline a cimentarsi nei contesti più diversi; lo dimostrano le collaborazioni che vanno dal tradizionale al bebop alla musica classica, e lo ha potuto fare essendo in possesso di una grande capacità tecnica che gli ha permesso di adattarsi volta per volta. Ha diretto gruppi con Benny Carter, Milt Hinton, Jimmy Crawford, Cliff Leeman con il quale ha fatto anche ottime registrazioni. Ha lavorato come compositore per la TV.

Cornettista celebre a Chicago. Ha inciso con la “Midway Dance Orchestra”, gli “Original Menphis Melody Boys” e nel 1929 ha suonato con Ben Pollack.

STEINHILBER JERRY (DR)

Musicista sconosciuto, del quale le cronache specializzate non ne hanno dato notizia alcuna, anche se ha ormai alle spalle venti anni di carriera. Ha collaborato con Dave Holland, con Joe Lovano, con Kenny Werener, con Dave Liebman, con Diana Krall, con Judi Silvano, con Von Freeman, con Ravi Coltrane ed altri. Il modello che persegue è la musica del quartetto di Coltrane.

Ilford, Inghilterra. 20/2/1922. – Clacton-on-Sea, Inghilterra. 24/11/1991.

Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a cinque anni e a suonare professionalmente a 16 anni. Nel 1940 ha debuttato con Nat Gonella e Johnny Claes. Nel 1942 ha fatto parte della banda della RAF a Norholt. E’ stato nella RAF sino al 1945 ed ha suonato con Harry Hayes e con Ted Heath ed ha iniziato anche a lavorare come arrangiatore. Ha suonato poi con Bert Ambrose sino all’estate del 1951 e a Londra in duo con Kenny Baker. Dal 1952 al 1954 ha suonato con Ronnie Scott, ha registrato con l’orchestra di Jack Parnell. L’ultima sua performance con la Ted Heath Orchestra diretta da Donn Lusher.

Le sue prime incisioni risalgono al 1966, dove suona con il gruppo “Cadentia Nova Danica Ensemble”. Nel 1969 ha composto “Afrodisiaca” un’opera ambiziosa basata sulla scala del balafon senegalese. Ha suonato con Lester Bowie al Baden Baden Free Jazz Meting. Musicista legato all’avanguardia americana degli anni’60 ed alla nuove forme musicali europee.

STENBERG ANTERO (ST)

Finlandia, 1931.

Nel 1949 vince un concorso ad Helsinki, ed entra nel gruppo di Erik Lindstrom nel quale resta per dieci anni. Musicista semiprofessionista poiché essendosi laureato nel 1957 in economia e commercio divide la musica con la professione ed addirittura nel 1968 la deve abbandonare per problemi di salute. Riconosciuto come uno dei migliori solisti di jazz moderno finlandesi del dopoguerra.
