ORSTED PEDERSEN NIELS HENNING (B)

Osted, Danimarca. 27/5/1946. – Copenhagen, Danimarca. 19/4/2005.

Nel complessino di famiglia mancava il bassista ed essendo egli il figlio minore ha dovuto iniziare a studiare questo strumento. Il suo primo ingaggio professionale risale al 1961 con il pianista Bent Axen, con il quale ha avuto anche il battesimo della prima incisione. Assunto nella ritmica fissa del famoso “Montmartre Jazzhus on New Year’s Eve” di Copenhagen, ha suonato insieme ai pianisti Kenny Drew e Tete Montoliu e con i batteristi Alex Riel, Makaya Ntshuko e Albert ”Tootie” Heath. Ha rinunciato alla grande occasione di andare negli Stati Uniti nell’orchestra di Count Basie per finire gli studi. Nello stesso tempo, sempre a Montmartre, ha accompagnato Bud Powell nel 1962, Quincy Jones, Sonny Rollins, John Lewis, Dexter Gordon nel 1964, Brew Moore, Don Byas, Roland Kirk, Kenny Dorham, Sahib Shihab, Ben Webster, Johnny Griffin e Karin Krog. Nella metà del 1965 ha fatto parte del trio di Bill Evans per una tournée europea. E’ presto diventato il bassista Europeo richiesto dai più importanti solisti nordamericani ed europei. Ha suonato ed inciso con Stuff Smith (1965) Dizzy Gillespie (1973) Toots Thielemans (1975) Chet Baker, Duke Jordan (1979) Stan Getz, Paul Bley, Archie Shepp, Dave Liebman, Lee Konitz, Ben Webster, Joe Pass, Idrees Sulieman, Tete Montoliu (1982). Notevole la collaborazione in duo con Kenny Drew, poi con Philip Catherine nel 1983, con Billy Hart. Il lungo sodalizio con Oscar Peterson, con Joe Pass, con Monty Alexander nel 1985 ed in duo con Ray Brown. Musicista fenomenale, è stato il musicista di maggior spicco del jazz danese. Ha messo al servizio dei più grandi jazzisti il suo suono preciso e robusto dando loro un sostegno prezioso. Ha dimostrato molta adattabilità in ogni contesto.

Dopo aver studiato il pianoforte ed il violino classico, ha subito una significativa influenza della musica rock ed ha fatto parte del gruppo Syrius con il quale ha girato l’Europa e, dal 1970 al 1971, l’Australia. Nel 1974 è tornato in Australia dove ha registrato il suo primo disco. Nel 1979 ha preso la doppia cittadinanza. E’ stato attivo nel genere soul ed ha influenzato la generazione di musicisti che ha collaborato con lui, come compositore ed arrangiatore.

Nel 1954 ha fondato i Red Father con i quali ha lavorato a Los Angeles. Nel 1955 è stato attivo sulla East Coast con Louis Rivera, nel 1958 ha collaborato con Nat Pierce, Dizzy Gillespie, Gunter Shuller, James Moody, Maynard Ferguson ed Elliot Lawrence. Ritornato a Los Angeles, ha suonato nel 1959 con Carla Bley, poi con Claude Williamson, negli Lighthouse All Stars e con Quincy Jones. Ha iniziato l’attività freelance, ha diretto anche un proprio gruppo del quale ha fatto parte la moglie Mona Orbeck. Ha suonato con Don Ellis, Gerald Wilson, ha inciso con Billy Taylor, Dinah Washington, Herbie Mann, Art Farmer, Hank Jones, Bobby Timmons, Jimmy Cleveland, con Frank Zappa e Oliver Nelson.

ORTIZ ARUAN (P)

Santiago, Cuba. 22/8/1973.

Si è affacciato sulla scena jazz USA nel 2003. Musicista con una formazione di violinista e pianista classico, nel 1995 ha vinto il premio Best Cuban Composition al Symposium of Cuban Music tenutosi in Giamaica, suscitando l’interessamento dell’etichetta spagnola Magic Music/Universal Latino e trasferendosi in Spagna. Nel 1996 ha preso parte alla realizzazione della compilation “La Isla de la Musica” e nello stesso anno ha inciso il suo primo disco da solista, “Impresión Tropical”, una raccolta di musica tradizionale cubana e proprie composizioni. Sempre nel 1996 ha ricevuto delle borse di studio per studiare piano classico con Cecilio Tieles al Professional Conservatory di Vilaseca, in Spagna e jazz con Joanne Brackeen e Danilo Perez al Berklee College of Music di Boston. La sua carriera jazzistica ha preso le mosse dall’attività come sideman a Barcellona e Parigi, suonando con Antoine Roney, Horacio Fumero, Mayte Martin, Salvador Nieblas, Pierre Boussaguet, Stephan Belmondo, Sarah Morrow, Tata Güines, Miguel “Anga” Díaz, e successivamente negli USA con Wallace Roney, Roy Hargrove, Stefon Harris, George Garzone, Sheila E, Horacio “El negro” Hernandez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Lionel Lueke, Eric McPherson, Abraham Burton, Jane Bunnett, Jerry Bergonzi, Hal Crook, John Lockwood, Bob Moses, Baron Browne e Bruce Gertz. Durante la permanenza in Europa ha vinto diversi premi, subito dopo il suo arrivo negli negli Usa ha preso parte alla registrazione di un disco dedicato a Miles Davis con Vince Wilburn, Wallace Roney, Antoine Roney e Missy Elliot, pubblicato dalla Columbia. Nel 2004 ha preso parte a un giro di concerti con il gruppo “The Fringe”. E’ attivo con il proprio trio, comprendente il bassista bulgaro Peter Slavov e il connazionale Francisco Mela alla batteria e con un proprio quartetto comprendente Abraham Burton, Peter Slavov ed Eric McPherson. E’ assistente presso il Berklee College of Music e ha tenuto seminari sul jazz e la musica cubana in diverse università statunitensi.

Di origini italiane, ha iniziato a suonare con propri gruppi ed in seguito ha lavorato con Carlo Minari, Billy Bartholomew, Harry Fleming, con Sam Wooding nel 1931, nella compagnia di Josephine Baker, con la quale è venuto in Europa. E’ tornato in Italia dove ha suonato con Amedeo Escobar, Saverio Seracini e nella grande orchestra di Pippo Barzizza. Ha lavorato in diversi stati europei ed ha avuto l’occasione di suonare con Coleman Hawkins. Ha fatto parte anche per un certo periodo dell’orchestra della RAI. In seguito ha lasciato l’attività.

ORTUSO MIKE, MICHELE (G-BJ).

Monte St.Angelo, Foggia, Italia. 31/8/1907. – Roma. 1981.

Fratello di Matteo, è andato in America con la madre all’età di tre anni per raggiungere il padre in Pennsylvania. Ha studiato il mandolino ed il violino a Worchester e ha debuttato con “Dixieland Serenaders”. E’ entrato nel “Kiett’s Circuit” organizzazione di spettacoli in tutto gli States e si è esibito come solista di banjo. Arrivato a New York ha lasciato i Kiett’s per entrare negli “Swanee Serenaders” e poi nei “Dixie Serenaders”. Nel 1922 ha suonato con Isham Jones. Nel 1923 è tornato in Italia, ha lavorato a Roma ed anche in Germania dove ha suonato con Julian Fush, con Eric Borchard, in duo con il pianista Mike Colicchio. Rientrato in Italia ha lavorato nell’orchestra della RAI sino all’età della pensione. Nel 1962 ha inciso con il fratello Matteo per la Ricordi. Ha molto inciso con l’orchestra Angelini. Nel 1968 si è ritirato dall’attività e si è stabilito da Osia.

ORY KID EDWARD (TB)

La Place, Louisiana. 25/12/1886. – Honolulu, Hawaii. 23/1/1973.

Nato in una famiglia creola, il suo primo strumento è stato il banjo che ha suonato in un gruppo composto di soli strumenti a corda. Trasferitosi a New Orleans ha iniziato a suonare il trombone nel gruppo di Lewis Mathews nel 1913, del quale gruppo ha assunto in seguito la direzione insieme a Mutt Carey ed in breve è diventata una tra le bande più attive e la più importante della città. Ha avuto nelle sue fila musicisti come Joe Oliver, Louis Armstrong e Johnny Dodds. Nel 1919 si è trasferito a Los Angeles dove ha inciso i primi dischi registrati in quella città da un complesso negro. Nel 1924 è andato a Chicago dove ha partecipato ad importanti incisioni con i gruppi di King Oliver, con il quale è rimasto sino al 1927. Poi con Jelly Rooll Morton e con Louis Armstrong nelle celebri sedute con gli Hot Five e gli Hot Seven. In seguito ha fatto parte delle orchestre di: Dave Peyton nel 1928, di Clarence Back nel 1929 e i Chicago Vagabonds sempre nel 1929. Ha registrato con Jimmy Dodds. Tornato in California nel 1930 ha vissuto molti anni fuori dalla musica facendo i più disparati mestieri. Nel 1938 ha ripreso a suonare e nel 1942 in pieno dixieland revival lo troviamo con Barney Bigard. Nel 1944 ha messo su un gruppo con il quale ha preso parte ad una serie di trasmissioni radiofoniche dirette dal regista cinematografico Orson Welles. A San Francisco ha apreto un suo locale, il “On The Levee”, nel 1956 e nel 1959 ha effettuato due fortunate tournée in Europa con la sua “Creole Jazz Band”. Negli ultimi anni a lavorato quasi sempre a Los Angeles, avendo nell’orchestra vecchi musicisti di New Orleans. Nel 1966 si è ritirato dall’attività per vivere ad Honolulu. Nel 1971 ha fatto la sua ricomparsa come ospite d’onore al Festival del Jazz di New Orleans. Più che un grande solista è stato un insuperato trombonista da collettivo, un potente elemento propulsore, sfruttando le sordine e gli effetti di glissando arricchiva sia melodicamente che ritmicamente il collettivo. E’stato il più noto esponente dello stile “tailgate”, cioè il primitivo modo di suonare il trombone, usato all’epoca anche o soprattutto in funzione ritmica. Il soprannome “Kid” (bambino) gli è stato dato perché rimasto orfano a iniziasto a dieci anni, per sopravvivere a suonare pubblicamente.

Ha iniziato a studiare la batteria all’età di dieci anni, poi ha frequentato il Berklee College of Music a Boston. Nel 1990 è tornato in patria per intraprendere la carriera di musicista e ha debuttato con il quartetto di Roy Hargrove, poi nel “Jazz Networks” con il quale ha registrato per la prima volta. Minot, North Dakota. 17/7/1921. – Bakersfield, California. 4/3/1992.

Figlia d’arte, a quattro anni ha suonato l’ukulele e durante gli anni di scuola ha studiato il violino. A nove anni ha inizia a studiare la chitarra ed inizia ha suonare il banjo con il gruppo del padre e ad esibirsi nei club. A dodici anni si è esibita alla stazione radio KLPM di Minot radio come chitarrista e cantante, poi con un trio di donne a Bismarck nel North Dakota, eseguendo musica hillbilly e canzoni popolari. A 15 anni ha lavorato alla stazione radio KDKA di Pittsburg con il pianista Winifred McDonnell. Dopo aver ascoltato Charlie Christian ha acquistato una chitarra ed ha scelto come suo modello Christian. A New York, suona poi con Buddy Rogers, Dick Stabile, Terry Shand, Bob Chester, Joe Venuti, Russ Morgan, Gay Claridge e in altri piccoli gruppi tra i quali un quintetto di tutte donne diretto da Mary Lou Williams nel 1946, con Beryl Booker, Mercer Ellington e Wynonie Harris. Ha inciso con Stuff Smith nel 1944, con Coleman Hawkins e con Art Tatum a Filadelfia nel 1948. Ha studiato anche chitarra classica con Albert Valdez Blaiwn e si è esibita con un suo trio nei migliori club di New York. Nel 1952 e nel 1962 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Elliot Lawrence, con Jack Sterling in un programma radio della CBS ed ha registrato con Tyree Glenn. Si stabilisce a Bakersfield in California dove ha operato con la “Osborne Guitar Company”insieme al marito il trombettista Ralph Scaffiti. Ha insegnato musica e si è esibita nei locali di Los Angeles. Ha partecipato a molte manifestazioni internazionali, ha registrato con il quintetto di Marion McPartland e nel 1990 ha avuto un ingaggio per il Village Vanguard di New York. Negli ultimi anni con un suo suo trio ha lavorato nei club della West Coast. Ha inciso anche con Louie Bellson-Gene Krupa. Profondamente influenzata da Django Reinhardt prima e poi da Charlie Christian.

Ha collaborato anche con Mike Gibbs, Humphrey Lyttelton, Alan Skidmore, con John Surman nel 1968, Selwyn Lissak. Nel 1970 ha messo su un suo trio con Louis Moholo e Harry Miller. Ha suonato in duo con Stan Tracey e Harry Beckett, con la Brotherhood Of Breath di Chris McGregor, John Warren. Nel 1973 ha fondato con John Surman e Alan Skidmore un trio di sassofoni. Nel 1980 per problemi di salute ha dovuto ritirarsi dall’attività. Musicista free inglese, lagato però alla tradizione della musica afroamericana.

Ha iniziato la propria carriera musicale nel 1975, dopo aver studiato privatamente per tre anni clarinetto, flauto e sax contralto. Negli anni del liceo ha fatto parte di numerosi gruppi di jazz e di blues della propria città e la sua formazione musicale è maturata nel Berklee College della sua città e sino al 1980 nella Howard University di Washington dove ha studiato composizione ed arrangiamento e si è laureato in Jazz Studies. Nel contempo ha preso a far parte di locali gruppi funk. Trasferitosi a New York ha suonato con Woody Shaw, Ron Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, John Faddis, Lester Bowie, David Murray, nella “Special Edition” di Jack DeJohnette nel 1985, ha partecipato a incisioni con Andrew Hill, Herbie Hancock, Mark Helias. Con Steve Coleman, Cassandra Wilson, Robin Eubanks, Gary Thomas, Marvin”Smitty”Smith, è stato uno dei principali animatori della “M-Base Association” di Brooklyn, centro di scambi culturali e di formazione musicale per i giovani. Ha suonato con Dave Holland. Nel 1987 ha firmato un contratto con l’etichetta tedesca JMT, con la quale ha pubblicato quattro dischi. Nel 1990 ha firmato un contratto con la Blue Note e da allora ha realizzato per quell’etichetta quindici dischi come leader. Il suo più recente lavoro discografico lo ha realizzato in trio con Jeff “Tain” Watts e Matt Brewer e numerosi altri ospiti. Sassofonista dallo stile composito, movimentato, teso, ma sempre misurato. La sua perenne fonte di ispirazione è il sassofonismo di Ornette Coleman.

Conosciuto soprattutto come songwriter, ma è stato anche un buon pianista. La sua scomparsa è avvenuta in maniera tragica, aggredito da un automobilista con il quale aveva protestato per non aver osservato le strisce pedonali, che dopo averlo tramortito con pugni e calci è risalito sulla sua macchina e gli è passato sul corpo ed è fuggito. Identificato dalla polizia è risultato un popolare musicista svedese di rap, David Moses Jassy in arte David Monopoliy.

Hudson, New York. 1868. – Minneapolis, Minnesota. 1923.

Di origine tedesca, ha raggiunto la notorietà come accompagnatore del bravo tenore Arthur Collins. Nel 1900 ha fatto una tournée in Europa ed in Inghilterra dove ha suonato per Edoardo VII. Grande cultore del suo strumento ha fatto nascere anche in Inghilterra una scuola di banjoisti di ragtime. Egli ha suonato prevalentemente nei grandi alberghi. Molto modestamente si è auto nominato il più grande banjonista di tutti i tempi.

Ha studiato pianoforte a Berna ed ha debuttato professionale come trombettista nel 1941 nell’orchestra di Fred Bohler. In seguito è stato con Philippe Brun, Edmando Cohanier e Jo Grandjean. Si è dedicato negli ultimi anni della carriera soprattutto al vibrafono, che ha suonato con il gruppo degli “Original Teddies”. Nel 1944 ha costituito una sua orchestra. Il 5 maggio del 1979 ha detto addio alla sua carriera con un Concerto al Casino di Montreux. Reputato il più brillante musicista svizzero.

Prima di applicarsi al sax tenore ha suonato il banjo. Nel 1935 ha fatto parte di un gruppo di dilettanti l’Astoria che si è esibito al “Nalen”di Stoccolma. In seguito il gruppo è diventata la Seymour Ostrewall’s Orchestra composta da professionisti. Con l’orchestra ha registrato ed ha accompagnato diversi cantanti molto popolari ed è rimasto attivo al “Nalen” sino al 1948. Ha anche operato nel 1940 e nel 1957 al “Grona Lund Tivoli” sempre a Stoccolma. E’ stata l’orchestra più nota della Svezia ed è stata composta da ottimi musicisti e Osterwall l’ha diretta sino al 1959. Nel 1960 e nel 1975 è stato anche direttore artistico del Folkparkena.

OTB (OUT OF THE BLUE).

Gruppo di bop revival organizzato dalla Blue Note nel 1985. Il suo membri fondatori sono stati il trombettista Michael Philip Mossman, l’altosassofonista Kenny Garrett (sostituito nel 1986 da Steve Wilson) dal sax tenore Ralph Bowen, dal pianista Harry Pickens, dal bassista Robert Hurst (sostituito da Kenny Davis nel 1986) ed il batterista Ralph Peterson. Nel 1986 Renee Rosnes ha sostituito Pickens, nel 1987 Kenny Drew Jr. e John King hanno sostituito la Rosnes e John King e nel 1988 Billy Drummond ha sostituito Peterson. Nel 1989 il gruppo è stato sciolto. Nei pochi anni di attività ha esibito un jazz bop revival molto fresco.

Valejo, California. 28/12/1922. – Los Angeles, 7/1/2012.

Musicista di origine Greca, la famiglia si è stabilita nel quartiere nero di Berkeley in California, egli si è inserito nella comunità nera e ne ha anche sposato una. Ha impara da solo a suonare la batteria ed ha iniziato a suonare con il pianista Count Otis Matthews e i suoi “West Oakland House Rockers”. In seguito ha suonato con il bassista Bob Johnson a Reno nel Nevada e poi con il violinista George Morrison a Denver nel Colorado. Nel 1942 ha fatto parte della territory band di Lloyd Hunter, con la quale ha fatto un tour nel Midwest. Nel 1943 ha diretto insieme a Preston Love un’orchestra con la quale ha lavorato al “Barrel House di Omaha nel Nebraska. E’ arrivato a Los Angeles dove ha lavorato con l’orchestra di Harlan Leonard al Club Alabam e nel 1945 è stato con l’orchestra di Bardu Ali sempre all’Alabam. Ha suonato anche con Geo Morrison e con Lloyd Hunter. Nel 1945 ha messo su una grande orchestra nella quale vi sono diversi ottimi musicisti ed ottiene un buon successo. Alla fine del 1949 ha perso tre dita della mano è questo ha ostacolato la sua carriera di batterista, quindi si è concentrato sul pianoforte e sul vibrafono. Sempre nel 1949 ha registrato con la cantante Little Esther Philips, dal 1949 al 1951 ha lavorato con la Savoy ed è andato in tour con i suoi “Johnny Otis Rhythm” e i “Blues Caravan “. In seguito ha avuto un contratto con la Mercury dal 1951 al 1952 e con la Peacock dal 1953 al 1955. Alla fine del 1955 ha fondato una sua compagnia che si chiama prima “Ultra” e poi “Dig”. Nel 1957 ha sottoscritto un contratto con la Capitol. Ha inciso con Illinois Jacquet, Lester Young. In seguito ha ridimensionato il gruppo e si è dedicato al R&B. Compositore di canzoni, attivo nella comunità negra di Los Angeles, ha tenuto a battesimo nella sua orchestra la ”Blues Show” alcune delle migliori cantanti di blues e di R&B degli ultimi anni, come Linda Hopkins, Etta James ed altre. Dopo un periodo di inattività nel 1968 è tornato sulla cresta dell’onda, anche insieme a suo figlio Shuggie Otis Johnny Jr. chitarrista. Nel 1970 ha partecipato al Festival di Monterey, ha fatto latre tournée ed ha lavorato per il cinema. Dal 1970 al 1980 è stato pastore nella Landmark Community Church ed oltre alla musica si è dedicato anche alla scultura ed ha anche insegnato.

Figlio del celebre Johnny. E’ stato lanciato giovanissimo nelle pittoresche carovane concertistiche del padre. Bluesmen dal tocco delizioso, in uno stile mainstream del lessico del blues elettrico.

OTOMO YOSHIHIDE (G).

Yokohama, Giappone. 1/8/1959.

Ha studiato etmomusicologia all’Università di Meiji dal 1979. Si è dedicato prima alla musica pop, per poi suonare in gruppi rock ed in seguito ha scoperto il jazz free e l’improvvisazione. Nel 1981 ha iniziato ad esibirsi nei club e nel 1990 ha fondato il gruppo “Ground Zero”. Ha lavorato con Butch Morris, Alfred Hart, Tochimaru Nakamura, Derek Bailey, Mats Gustafsson, John Zorn, John Rose, David Moss, Christian Teitelbaum. La sua statura artistica è rilevante, a capo del “New Jazz Quintet” nato nel luglio 1999, nel quale ha riunito i migliori musicisti di free jazz giapponesi. La musica del gruppo si sviluppa tra il free storico e l’hard bop di avanguardia, ma anche astrattezze del post free con chiari riferimenti a Ornette Coleman.

Ha debuttato con il quartetto di Sadao Watabane. Ha suonato poi con Hidehiko Matsumoto. Nel 1965 ha guidato un suo trio con il pianista Hideo Ichikawa, ha registrato con Roy Haynes. Nel 1970 ha girato il Giappone con il gruppo “Four Drums” insieme a Haynes, Jack DeJohnette e Mel Lewis. Nel 1971 ha avuto un suo quintetto “Maracaibo”. Ha accompagnato molti musicisti americani in tour in Giappone, Elvin Jones, Phil Woods, Reggie Workman, Kenny Kirkland, John Scofield, Richard Beirach, Miroslav Vitous, Nana Vasconcelos. Alla fine degli anni ’80 ha diretto il gruppo “We Three” insieme al pianista Hiroyouki Takimoto ed il bassista Hideaki Kanazawa.
