DREW KENNY KENNETH SIDNEY. (P)

New York, 28/8/1928. – Copenhagen, Danimarca, 4/8/1993.

Ha cominciato a studiare il pianoforte sin da bambino. All’età di otto anni ha dato il primo concerto, ha completato gli studi classici e frequentata la High School of Music di New York, dove ha iniziato a suonare del jazz. Ha inciso il suo primo disco con Howard McGhee nel 1950. In seguito ha suonato con Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young e Buddy De Franco. Dal 1953 si è trasferito in California, qui ha preferito suonare con suoi gruppi, anche se essendo un accompagnatore ricercatissimo ha collaborato con Dinah Washington, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Johnny Griffin, Donald Byrd, Buddy Rich. Ha suonato e inciso anche con Sonny Stitt, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Sonny Rollins, Kenny Dorham, Jimmy Smith, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Oscar Pettiford, Ken Parker, Eddie Davis, Sonny Criss, Chet Baker, Ernie Henry. Dal 1961 ha soggiornato prima a Parigi dove era di casa al Blue Note e poi definitivamente nel 1964 a Copenhagen, dove ha sposato la figlia del pianista Leo Mathisen. Una delle ultime fatiche discografiche un mirabile duo con Oersted Pedersen. Anche essendo un pianista di forte formazione classica, ha saputo giovarsi di questa esperienza arricchendola con il calore del blues e la vivacità del bop. Nell’accompagnare riusciva a far sentire la sua presenza con grande misura e delicatezza.

Figlio del grande Kenny Drew, deve confrontarsi con la pesante eredità del celebre padre, ma la musica respirata in tutta la famiglia lo ha aiutato a superare il confronto. Egli ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte classico a quattro anni ed è stata una sua zia a fargli conoscere il jazz. Ha registrato insieme a Charnett Moffett, Cody Moffett, Ron McClure, la Mingus Big Band, Michael Phillip Moussman, Stanley Turrentine, Jack Walrath, Steve Slagle e Ronnie Cuber ed altri. Ha collaborato anche con Stanley Jordan, con gli “Out of the Blue”, Slide Hampton, Steve Grossman, Frank Morgan, la Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Steve Turre e Jack Wilkins. Dalla metà degli anni ’90 si è impegnato anche nel campo della musica classica, ha suonato al “Barrosa Music Festival”in Australia, nel 1997 ha fatto concerti con la violinista Jane Peters e il pianista Peter Waters e fa parte del trio classico e di jazz da camera del compositore, sassofonista e flautista Daniel Schnyder. Pianista di impostazione classica, dallo stile limpido. In possesso di una tecnica notevole, ripetiamo pensiamo che sia sottovalutato soprattutto per il nome che porta, che induce spesso a dei confronti che nel suo caso risultano negativi.

Ha inizia ad interessarsi alla batteria a 5 anni, a 11 anni ha preso lezioni ed a 12 ha ricevuto la prima proposta di ingaggio. Ha studiato per tre anni con George Fierstone. In seguito è entrato come batterista fisso al Ronnie’s Scott Club di Londra, dove ha avuto modo di accompagnare moltissimi grandi musicisti. Ha suonato con Joe Harriott, Tommy Whittle, Don Rendell, Frank Rosolino, Phil Woods, Tony Lee, Harry South. Per diverso tempo ha fatto parte del quintetto di Ronnie Scott, ha fatto parte poi del trio di Oscar Peterson, ha suonato con Joe Pass, ha accompagnato Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Harry Edison e Buddy Tate. Ha suonato ed inciso con i fratelli Brecker, con Freddie Hubbard, Gil Evans, Ray Brown, Buddy de Franco e Arturo Sandoval. Le sue fonti maggiori di ispirazione sono Art Blakey ed Elvin Jones.

DREWES BILLY, WILLIAM (ST-SS)

Billy Drewes è un musicista da sempre al centro di molti gruppi ed eventi musicali caratterizzati da un alto tasso di creatività. Sassofonista e specialista di vari strumenti a fiato di grande spessore e versatilità, ha preso parte a oltre cento incisioni. Ha effettuato tournée e inciso tre dischi con Joe Lovano e tre dischi con Bill Frisell. Recentemente ha inciso con Ron Carter. Tra le altre sue incisioni spiccano quelle con John Scofield, Lyle Mays, Kenny Werner, Steve LaSpina e Andy LaVerne e due maestri della musica brasiliana quali Toninho Horta e Duduka De Fonseca. Drewes vanta inoltre una lunga collaborazione con Paul Motian, con il quale è stato in tournée e ha inciso numerose volte. Ha inciso e si è esibito con la Vanguard Jazz Orchestra e ha collaborato con la Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra. Ha inoltre collaborato tra gli altri con Dave Douglas, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, Marcus Roberts, Fred Hersch e Eddie Palmieri. Ha inoltre preso parte all’incisione di numerose colonne sonore tra cui “Golden Gate”, “Ty Cobb” e “Bossa Nova”. E’ docente presso la New School e la Manhattan School of Music.

Ha studiato pianoforte e fisarmonica, prima di passare al sassofono tenore. Ha debuttato nel 1947 con una orchestra da ballo, quella di Charlie Gaudriot, poi ha suonato con Paul Reishmann dal 1948 al 1951, con Gerd Steffen, Horst Winter, Johannes Fehring. Ha suonato nella famosa “Austrian All Stars”, il primo gruppo moderno austriaco, nell’orchestra di Fatty George dal 1956 al 1958, con Kurt Edelhagen dal 1958 al 1972. Ha fatto parte anche della Clarke/Boland Big Band, della ORF Big Band. A inoltre inciso con Gerd Steffens, Hans Koller, Bill Ramsey.

Musicista che ha fatto parte di un gruppo che si è definito “ Orchestra of Excited String” . Bassista che ha suonato su uno strumento artigianalmente rifabbricato dal quale ha ottenuto sonorità inusitate. E così tutti gli altri componenti del gruppo praticano strani strumenti: l’hurdy gurdy che è la copia di uno strumento a corde del medioevo europeo, all’organo il “portable pipe organ” inventato per l’occasione (aria sottopressione incanalata da un mantice elettrico in canne metalliche, per finire ad un pianino con martelletti e corde scambiati in modo insolito. Tutto questo produce una musica sconcertante, strana che riteniamo non abbia niente da spartire con il jazz e con la improvvisazione in generale.

Nel 1971 ha iniziato a suonare con Nedley Elstak, nel 1971 ha suonato con Charlie Nanlohy, nel 1972 con il Kollektief di William Breuker, nel 1977 con Leo Cuypers nel Teo Loevendie Consort. Compositore autodidatta. Musicista tecnicamente molto apprezzabile, le sue performance sono intense e molto espressive.

DRIFTIN SLIM, ELMON MICKLE. (VC-AR-G)

Atlanta, Georgia, 24/2/1919. – Los Angeles, California. 15/9/1977.

Conosciuto anche come Driftin’Slim, Harmonica Harry, Model T Slim. Cantante di blues ed ottimo cantastorie, ha imparato a suonare l’armonica da John Lee Sonny Boy Williamson, con il quale ha lavorato nei locali di Little Rock. Nel 1951 ha messo su un suo gruppo insieme a Baby Face Turner, Junior Crippled ed il chitarrista Red Brooks e il batterista Bill Russell. Ha inciso nel 1952 con Ike Turner. In seguito ha lavorato da solo a Los Angeles, ha inciso diversi dischi e lavora anche per l’Università della California.

DRINKARD JUBILAIRES SINGERS (THE)

Gruppo vocale che ha raggiunto il massimo del successo alla fine degli anni ’50. La nascita del gruppo è stata sollecitata da Nicola”Nitch”Drinkard che ha incoraggiato i figli a formare il gruppo gospel a Savannah in Georgia nel 1938. Il gruppo originale comprendeva Emily Drinkard (Cissy Huston) sua sorella Anne e i suoi due fratelli Nick e Larry. In seguito negli anni ’50, sono arrivate Marie Epps, Ann Moss e Judy Clay. La famiglia si è trasferita nel New Jersey. Il gruppo si è esibito al Festival di Newport ed ha registrato diversi dischi. Nel 1967 dopo ulteriori cambiamenti il gruppo è diventato il “Sweet Inspirations”.

Ha studiato musica alla “Interlochen Arts Accademy” nel Michigan e dal 1974 ha frequentato l’Università di Miami, dove ha studiato con Jaco Pastorius. Ha anche studiato al Berklee College of Music dove ha avuto come compagno di stanza Bill Frisell, con il quale appena laureati sono andati in Beglio, ed egli qui ha suonato con Chet Baker . Ha suonato poi con Toots Thielemans. Nel 1979 va a New York dove ha suonato nel 1980 con Buddy Rich, ha collaborato con Frisell e dal 1990 al 1995 ha fatto parte del gruppo “New and Used”. Ha suonato anche con John Zorn, con Wayne Horvitz e con Ned Rothemberg. Alla fine del ’90 ha suonato con il pianista Mick Rossi, ha diretto un suo quartetto, ha fatto parte della Mahavishnu Orchestra e della New York Philarmonic Orchestra.

Nata come cantante pop, è giunta alla notorietà verso il 1965 come voce free jazz nelle incisioni con l’organista Brian Auger. Il suo maggior successo è stato “This weel’s on fire”. Cantante sensibile e molto versatile. In seguito produce una musica astratta, di difficile comprensione.

La sua carriera è iniziata nel 1950 come chitarrista in bande locali. Un incidente ad un dito lo ha costretto a diventare un pianista che ha studiato con il Professor Longhair. Nel 1963 si è trasferito a Los Angeles e qui ha raggiunto il successo. E’ diventato il maestro bianco della moderna canzone R&B il rock psichedelico, che confina con il voodoo delle cerimonie religiose. Egli si è formato alla gloriosa musica afroamericana del dopoguerra, quella delle grandi orchestre, delle famose ballate e dei grandi crooners, ma il suo vero territorio di azione a lui più consono è il blues e le blues ballad. E qui che viene fuori la sottile ironia e quelle emozioni che ci ricordano Ray Charles, ed il suo modo di cantare è meno forzato e più coerente. Cantante che riesce particolarmente inteso e naturale quando interpreta i suoi temi originali, che riecheggiano il profumo dell’epoca con tutta la loro bellezza.

Ha appreso la tecnica del clarinetto dal padre ed ha debuttato nei locali di Boston, città dove vive con la famiglia nel gruppo del fratello Buzzy. Nel 1940 va a New York dove ha suonato con Bud Freeman, poi ha suonato con Muggsy Spanier nel 1941, con Boyd Raeburn nel 1942. Dopo il servizio militare è tornato a Boston e tra gli anni ’50 e gli anni ’60, ha suonato con diverse orchestre. Ha lavorato con Don Cheathan, con Vic Dickerson ed altri allo George Wein’s Storyville Club e con la Mahogany Hall All Stars di George Wein. Nel 1959 ha messo su un suo trio, che ha sciolto per fondare con il fratello la “Drootin Brothers Band”, con la quale ha partecipato a diverse manifestazioni pubbliche e a trasmissioni televisive. Ha suonato a Boston allo “Scotch’n’Sirloin”, dove ha accompagnato Bobby Hackett, Roy Eldridge, Zoot Sims, Ruby Braff, Joe Venuti, Doc Cheatham, Vic Dickenson e Wild Bill Davison. Continua a essere attivo con la “Drootin Brothers Band”, gruppo nel quale sono coinvolte diverse generazioni della famiglia, c’è Al figlio di Sonny Drootin al pianoforte ed il nipote Tennis Drootin alla batteria. Si è spesso esibito al Boston Globe Jazz Festival e a Palm Beach in Florida con l’orchestra di Lester Lanin.

Fratello di Al, emigrato con i genitori negli Stati Uniti quando aveva cinque anni. Ha studiato musica a Boston residenza scelta dai genitori. Ha iniziato suonando con un gruppo locale diretto da Buzzy Bazzew. In seguito va in tournée con la Ira Ray Hutton’s All Boys Band nel 1940, nel 1941 è con Al Donahue. Si è fermato a Boston per cinque anni durante i quali ha suonato con: Max Kaminsky, Henry Red Allen, Coleman Hawkins e Jack Teagarden. Nell’ottobre del 1947 si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha suonato con Buck Clayton, Wingy Manone, Edmond Hall e con l’orchestra diretta da Jess Stacy e Lee Wiley. In seguito va a New York dove ha suonato con Eddie Condon per diversi anni, diventato il batterista fisso dell’Eddie Condon’s Club ed uno dei dixielanders più famosi della città. Ha suonato anche con Tommy Dorsey nel 1950. Lasciato Condon nel 1952, ha lavorato a Boston con George Wein, poi con Sidney Bechet, con Ralph Sutton, con Bobby Hackett a New York e a Boston, con Billy Butterfield, Jimmy McPartland, con Ruby Braff nel 1954, . Nel 1957 al Festival di Newport ha suonato con Ruby Braff e Pee Wee Russell, con i “The Duke of Dixieland” nel 1962, con Pee Wee Erwin, con Kenny Davern, ha fatto parte della “Dixieland All Stars”, della “Newport All Stars”Jazz Giants nel 1967, con Will Bill Davison nel 1968, Herman Autrey, con Benny Morton nel 1969. Negli anni’70 ha formato insieme al fratello il gruppo dei “Drootin Brothers Band”. Batterista che ha svolto onorevolmente il suo ruolo nella sezione ritmica di gruppi tradizionali e dixieland in moltissime registrazioni. Dallo stile irruento, stimolante e vibrante.

Ha iniziato la carriera nella banda dixieland della scuola nel 1974. Ha studiato la lingua inglese e si è impegnata in diversi contesti in Germania ed in Olanda. Ha lavorato con diversi gruppi tradizionali in giro per l’Europa. Sempre più influenzata dal canto moderno, si è esibita nel 1983 in Africa e nel 1984 ha studiato con Jiggs Whigham alla Musikhochscule di Colonia. Ha messo su anche un suo quartetto i “Voicings”, poi ha lavorato con Peter Herbolzheimer, con Jerry van Rooyen ed ha partecipato a molti festival europei. Si è esibita in duo con il chitarrista Thomas Brill nel 1989, nel 1993 ha lavorato con Michael Sagmeister, ha registrato con il gruppo “Bart’s Bones”, nel 1996 ha collaborato con la “Engelbert Wrobel’s Swing Society”ed altri gruppi. Oltre a cantare ha suonato anche il clarinetto ed il sassofono tenore, ha anche insegnato canto alla Folkwang-Hochschule di Essen ed al conservatorio di Antwerp.

Ha seguito degli studi classici sulla tromba ed ha ottenuto un riconoscimento con le percussioni al Conservatorio di Parigi. Spesso ha suonato con Michel Portal e con lui è membro dell’Ensemble Domain Musical et Musique Vivante.

Figlio d’arte, il padre è stato un buon batterista, ha iniziato suonare a quattro anni seguito dal padre. Ha iniziato a lavorare in piccoli gruppi pop mentre frequenta la scuola, si è diplomato allo “Shenandoah Conservatory”. Nel 1988 si è trasferito a New York, dove lavora regolarmente con l’OTB, in seguito è entrato nel sestetto di Horace Silver, ha suonato con Bobby Hutcherson, Jon Faddis nel 1990, Walt Weiskopf, con James Moody, con Steve Kuhn, Joe Henderson, Jay Jay Johnson, Andrei Hill, Freddy Hubbard. Suona con il quintetto di Don Braden, nel 1993 con Joris Teppe, nel 1994 con Sonny Rollins, poi con Ted Rosenthal, con Bruce Barth, con Johnny King, nel 1998 con David Hazeltine e Joe Loke. Collabora con Renee Rosnes, con Larry Grenadier, con Ralph Moore e Chris Potter. L Durante la sua attività freelance ha suonato con : Nat Adderley, John Swana, Vincent Herring, Billy Pierce, Rob Bargad, Bob Belden, Scott Wendholt, Fabio Ambrosetti, Greg Gisberg, Seamus Blake, Jon Gordon, Andy LaVerne, Lee Konitz, Javon Jackson, Peter Bernstein, Andy Fusco, Jim Rotondi, Marty Ehrlich, Walt Weiskopf, Sam Newsome, Tim Ries, Conrad Herwig, Peter Washington, Ira Coleman, Steve Wilson, Mulgrew Miller, Kevin Eubanks. Si stà dimostrando uno dei batteristi più duttili e capaci degno erede dei Max Roach e di Billy Higgins.

DRUMMOND DON (TB)

Kingston, Jamaica, 1943. – Kingston, Jamaica, 6/5/1969.

Dopo essersi diplomato alla “Alpha Cottage School”, come è nella tradizione della scuola egli è rimasto ad insegnare ai giovani studenti della stessa. Ha suonato nell’orchestra swing dei sassofonisti Eric Deans e Roy Colbourn, nel 1955 ha messo su un suo quintetto con il quale ha accompagnato diversi musicisti di passaggio, George Shearing, Jay Jay Johnson e Sarah Vaughan. Ha suonato con la big band di Sonny Bradshaw. Nel 1964 ha fatto parte dei fondatori del gruppo “Skatalites”e ha guidato un gruppo insieme a Tommy McCook. Come molti giovani della sua generazione è stato coinvolto dalle religioni orientali, sino all’ossessione. Già da tempo soffre anche di problemi mentali, che con il passare del tempo si sono acuiti, e lo porteranno fino ad assassinare la moglie la ballerina Margarita Mahfood, per cui è stato arrestato ed in seguito in carcere si è suicidato.

DRUMMOND RAY (B)

Durante l’infanzia e l’adolescenza non ha una dimora stabile. Ha vissuto tra l’America e l’Europa al seguito del padre militare. Ha iniziato a suonare la tromba ed altri strumenti a fiato e nel 1961 si è applicato nello studio del contrabbasso. Ha studiato scienze politiche al Claremont Mne’s College in California ed ha iniziato a fare l’assicuratore e nel 1971 ha frequento la Stanford University. Ha iniziato la carriera con il gruppo di Tom Harrell, quindi ha suonato con Michael White e nel 1973 ha suonato con Bobby Hutcherson e Woody Shaw a San Francisco. Nel novembre del 1977 ha suonato con la Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, con Johnny Griffin, con Jack Walrath nel 1979, con Art Farmer nel 1982, con Wynton Marsalis nel 1983, con Peter Leitch, con Kenny Barron nel 1986, con Stan Getz nel 1987. Suona in trio con John Hicks e Idris Muhammad, Joe Lovano, David Murray, John Faddis, Slide Hampton, Jimmy Heath, con il quartetto di Toots Thielemans, con quello di Craig Handy, Pharoah Sanders, David Murray, con il “New York Jazz Quartet”, Joshua Breakstone, la Mingus Dynasty, Renee Rosnes Steve Nelson, Billy Hart, Slide Hampton, David Sanchez, Danilo Perez, Marvin “Smitty”Smith, Bill Mays, A. Queen, M. Muldour, O. Brien, Ronnie Matthews, Hal Galper nel 1989. Nella sua attività freelance a New York ha registrato con : Hank Jones, George Coleman, Alvin Queen, Gary Bartz, Ricky Ford, Mickey Tucker, Milt Jackson, James Spaulding, Jeanie Bryson ed altri. La grande quantità di collaborazioni e la diversità di partner, fanno capire da sole le sue grandi qualità, di accompagnatore robusto, duttile, molto moderno e molto apprezzato negli studi di registrazione.

Ha vissuto con la famiglia alla periferia di Seattle e nel 1972 si è trasferito a Bainbridge Island, nello stato di Washington. Bel 1976 ha iniziato a suonare la batteria, che ha studiato privatamente e dal 1983 al 1988 sotto la guida di Eddie Blackwell alla Wesleyan University. Sempre alla Wesleyan ha studiato con Bill Barron, Bill Lowe e Steve McCrawen. Ha suonato nel corso della carriera con Brad Mehldau, Steve Davis, Mario Pavone, Joe Fonda, Nat Reeves, Phil Bowler, Rick Rosie, Stanton Davis, Wadada Leo Smith, Paul Brown, Hotep Galeta, Wallace Roney, Vincent Herring, Alan Palmer, Bill Brown, Dicky Wells, Dwight Andrews, Chris Lightcap, Matt Moran, Paolo Austerlitz, Don DePalma, Kent Hewett, Giacomo Gates, Paul Flaherty, Hafez Modirzadeh, Kunle Mwanga, Stephen (Schwartz) Trask. Dopo quaranta anni di attività Herb Drury e Jerry Cherry sono ormai i musicisti più importanti e rappresentativi dello swing di St.Louis. Sono diventati per la loro città una istituzione ed i maggiori esponenti della musica improvvisata. Sono stati i fondatori del più caldo, ricco e irresistibile jazz per tutti questi anni. L’Herb Drury’s Trio, è stato man mano completato dai batteristi Phil Hulsey e Art Heagle durante le numerose esibizioni nei migliori locali della città come il “Sorrento’s” ed il “Debalivere”e i grandi alberghi come l’Hotel Daniele ed il Ritz-Carlton. Herb al piano e Jerry al basso hanno creato un genere di musica che ha una profonda ispirazione e soprattutto in perfetta sinergia, improvvisando in perfetto sincronismo.

DUBIN LARRY, LAWRENCE JACOB. (DR-PERC-MARIMBA)

Il padre è emigrato nel 1924 dalla Russia in Canada, dove ha suonato il violino nella Philarmonic Orchestra di Montreal. Si è trasferito a New York nel 1931 per suonare con la Manhattan Symphony Orchestra e qui è nato Larry. E’ cresciuto in una lontana cittadina del Nord Ontario, ed ha iniziato a suonare la batteria dopo aver visto Gene Krupa in un film. Ha iniziato a suonare professionalmente a Toronto in piccoli gruppi dixieland, per breve tempo ha suonato del bop a Dallas. E’ tornato nel 1960 in Canada per tornare a suonare in gruppi di jazz tradizionale. Nella Imperial Jazz Band del trombettista Michael White, nel gennaio del 1963 ha guidato un suo gruppo i “Big Muddys”. Nel 1974 è membro fondatore della “Canadian Creative Music Collective” (CCMC) e dal 1976 ha guidato un gruppo di jazz d’avanguardia, ha suonato con il pianista Stuart Brommer e con Bill Smith. Nel 1978 ha registrato con la CCMC. Dalla tecnica originale di autodidatta purissimo, particolarmente valido nell’uso del rullante. Musicista in perfetta sintonia con il suo tempo, totalmente votato alla improvvisazione contrario ad ogni tentativo scritto. Quotidianamente suonava alla “Music Gallery”, anche accompagnando da solo il suono che veniva da una radio. Si è spento pochi giorni prima che con il suo gruppo si accingeva ad effettuare una tournée in Europa, che avrebbe permesso ai jazzofili europei di conoscerlo meglio.

Era il nome di un negozio di musica sito al 203 West Wacker Drive di Chicago. Lionel Hampton incise nel,1945 per la Brunswick un brano dal titolo “Doublin With Dublin.

Nel 1961 ha vinto un premio come compositore e ha fatto parte dell’Istant Composers Pool. Insegnante presso il conservatorio di Amsterdam e il liceo musicale di Harlem.

Chitarrista emergente nell’area di New York. Strumentista molto tecnico sia alla chitarra elettrica, che a quella acustica ed anche quella classica. A ben impressionato anche in diverse tournée europee. Predilige suonare la chitarra acustica, con la quale può manifestare appieno le sue tendenze rapsodiche.

DUCHIN EDDIE (LEAD-P)

Cambridge, Massachussetts, 10/4/1910.

Studia da farmacista ed inizia ad esercitare in tale attività. Ma è attratto dalla musica ed entra a far parte della famosa orchestra diretta da Leo Reisman, con la quale si esibisce al Central Park Casino di New York. Ottiene grande successo ed in seguito nel 1932 sostituisce Reisman alla guida dell’orchestra. Egli ha inaugurato la stagione della cosiddetta sweet music, nella quale in seguito hanno avuto grande successo Carmen Cavallaro e Liberace. E’ stato girato anche un film sulla sua vita, interpretato da Tyrone Power.

Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a sette anni e da allora la musica ha avuto una parte importante nella sua vita. Nel 1983 è entrato a far parte di un gruppo rock il NUIQ. Nel 1986 insieme a Chris Springer ha messo su il gruppo “Crazy Finger”. Nel 1997 hanno messo su il GW Downe, un gruppo più orientato al jazz e nel 1999 lo Springer/Ducommun Group completamente strutturato per fare solo del jazz.

DU CONGE ALBERT (TP)

New Orleans, Louisiana. 1895.

Nato in una famiglia di musicisti, i fratelli Adolphus, Earl e Peter, oltre al più celebre il padre Oscar. Ha iniziato a suonare nelle brass band, ma ha trascorso la maggior parte della sua carriera sui battelli del fiume. Il primo è stato uno dei più celebri il “Capitol”nel 1924” nella S. S. Capitol Orchestra di Fate Marable e poi nella Islan Queen con l’orchestra di Sidney Desvignes.

Napoleonville, Louisiana, 1870.

Ha suonato per diversi anni nella Onward Brass Band. La più famosa brass band dell’epoca ed egli stesso è arrivato ad essere uno dei migliori cornettisti di New Orleans. Durante la guerra ispano-americana ha fatto parte della banda del 9°Reggimento. Finita la guerra ha messo su una sua orchestra da ballo.

DU CONGE PETER. (AS)

New Orleans, Louisiana. 1903. – Michigam, 1967.

Dopo aver fatto le ossa nelle brass band cittadine, nel 1919 ottenuto un ingaggio con Edmond Faure e ha lavorato con la S. S. Capitol Orchestra sul fiume. Trasferitosi a New York ha lavorato con la Lucky Santo Orchestra di John Vaughn, quindi con Bill Brown con il quale è venuto in Europa nel 1928. Qui si è stabilito, ha sposato Ada Bricktop Smith un’artista molto popolare e ha suonato in concerti ed inciso dischi con molti grandi musicisti del suo paese in tournée in Europa, tra cui Louis Armostrong nel 1934, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Peyton, Freddy Johnson, Arthur Briggs. Allo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale è rientrato negli States per ritirarsi dall’attività.

Autodidatta, nel 1984 ha fondato un gruppo con il pianista Andy Emler, ha suonato con Daniel Humair e poi con l’orchestra di Antoine Herve. Ha guidato un suo gruppo i “SOS”, ha suonato con i “Pandemonium” di François Jeanneau e con l’”Onzet” di Patrice Caratini. E’ stato membro fondatore della “Orchestre National du Jazz”, nel 1986 ha suonato in trio con Michel Benita e Aaron Scott, nel 1989 ha partecipato al tour “Jazz Français” a New York, nel 1990 ha suonato con Enrico Rava ed è andato in tournée e ha registrato con il “Caos Totale” di Tim Berne. Nel 1992 ha partecipato alla fondazione dell’”Acoustic Quartet”, con Louis Sclavis e Dominique Pifarely. Nel 1993 ha guidato i “Seven Songs from the Sixties”, nel 1994 ha suonato con i “Bllodcount” di Tim Berne, con i “Latin For Travelers”di Bobby Previte nel 1997, nel 1998 nel “Big Satan” con Tim Berne e Tom Rainey ed in un altro trio con il bassista Bruno Chevillon ed il batterista Eric Echampard. Ha suonato anche con Steve Lacy. Specialista della chitarra a sei e a dodici corde da diversi anni sulla scena maggiore.

Cantante di formazione vocale fondata sulla musica barocca, consolidata atraverso gli studi al Conservatorio di Boulogne-sur-Mer. Si è laureata in diritto all’Università di Lilla. Ha perfezionato le sue capacità vocali privatamente con ottimi maestri. Nel 1986 ha cominciato ad interessarsi al jazz e dati gli ottimi risultati si è ben adattata. Spesso tra le sue interpretazioni la scelta è caduta anche su delle composizioni di aria classica. Nel 2001 si è aggiudicata il Django d’Or. Ha registrato insieme a Chick Corea, Enrico Pieranunzi, Jacky Terrasson e Rene Urtreger. Ha evidenziato delle ottime qualità interpretative esposte con una vocalità potente e raffinata. E’ la direttrice del Prelude, la prima scuola per canto jazz di Parigi. I suoi primi modelli sono stati Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Anita O’Day, però il suo cantante ideale resta Chet Baker. Vocalist in possesso di una ottima tecnica, una eleganza quasi felina. Nel suo canto cerca di interpretare i temi mettendo in evidenza l’emotività.

Ha studiato clarinetto classico alla Franz Listz Accademy di Budapest ed inizia a suonare del jazz registrando con Mihaly Tbanyi nel 1962. Ha suonato anche nella Nebula Band nel 1964. Nel 1973 ha insegnato a Neuss in Germania e ha partecipato a diversi festival con gruppi di musicisti europei. Si è stabilito all’inizio degli anni’80 in Germania, dove nel 1982 ha vinto anche un concorso di composizione a Monaco. Nel 1989 ha accompagnato in sala di registrazione la cantante connazionale Marta Szirmay, poi ha suonato nel 1990 in trio con la cantante Yidiz Ibrahimova e l’alto sassofonista tedesco Sebastian Buchholz, ha suonato nel trio “Juxoli”, con il trombonista Michel Barbier, con Howard Johnson ed altri. Ha diretto anche suoi gruppi. Musicista dalla ottima tecnica. Egli si è creato una buona fama per il buon gusto, per il fraseggio sciolto, pieno di ritmo con il quale si propone. La sua musica è solare epidermica come lo strumento di cui è diventato un grosso esponente. Musicista che ha iniziato ad interpretare dei brani classici in maniera jazzistica ed in seguito ha cercato di essere un buon interprete del clarino contemporaneo. I migliori risultati li ha ottenuti quando ha dato alle sue interpretazioni jazzistiche di sapore classico, dei colori folkloristici. Nella sua musica ha molto peso la melodia e la composizione, strumentista dal buon fraseggio, anche se la sua origine classica lo rende un po’ distaccato.
