TRISTANO LENNIE (P)

Chicago, Illinois. 19/3/1919. – New York. 18/11/1978.

Figlio di emigranti italiani. Ha perso completamente la vista all’età di nove anni per una grave malattia ed ha studiato in una scuola per ciechi nell’Illinois, dove ha suonato diversi strumenti e diretto l’orchestrina. Ha completato poi gli studi all’American Conservatory di Chicago, dove si è diplomato in pianoforte e composizione nel 1943. Gli inizi della sua carriera non sono stati facili. Ha suonato il sax ed il clarinetto in orchestre da ballo, ha insegnato alla Christiansen School of Popular Music ed ha diretto un gruppo dixieland. Nel 1945 si è fatto una ottima fama di insegnante, ha avuto tra i suoi discepoli Billy Bauer, Lee Konitz e Bill Russo. Ha sposato la cantante Judy Moore. Ha messo su un trio con due suoi allievi Arnold Fishkin e Billy Bauer. Ha cominciato a suscitare l’ammirazione dei critici, nel 1946 si è trasferito a New York con il suo trio. Ha suonato in vari locali, ha accompagnato Charlie Parker e Dizzy Gillespie ed ha inciso il suo primo disco come leader. Sopratutto ha amato insegnare, dedicandosi quasi completamente a questa attività. Nel 1948 la rivista Metronome lo elegge musicista dell’anno. Nel 1949 è entrato nel suo gruppo Lee Konitz con il quale ha inciso vari dischi, che restano fra i migliori esempi dello stile cool. Il gruppo è diventato un sestetto con l’arrivo di Warne Marsh. Nel 1951 ha fondato a New York una scuola di jazz nella quale hanno insegnato anche i suoi ex allievi, la scuola ha cessato la sua attività nel 1956. Le sue apparizioni in pubblico sono state sempre più rare,  lasciando raramente lo studio al 317 East della 32a Strada, anche per registrare. Le sue rare esibizioni pubbliche al club Half Note e nel 1965 ha fatto una ultima tournée europea ed è apparso in pubblico per l’ultima volta nel 1968. In seguito si è dedicato completamente all’insegnamento. Ha inciso dei nastri da solo o con suoi allievi, diversi dei quali sono stati pubblicati postumi. Ha registrato oltre che con i suoi gruppi, con Earl Swope, Bill Harris, John La Porta, i Barry Ulanov’s All Stars. Resta uno dei maggiori musicisti che si sono affermati dopo il tramonto del bop. Eletto padre del cool, personaggio schivo, chiuso nel suo mondo musicale è rimasto sempre fuori dell’ambiente del Jazz. Musicista incapace di compromessi, ha lasciato opere realizzate nel suo privato che potrebbero essere definite a distanza di anni di avanguardia. Pianista che ha avuto molta influenza sui giovani pianisti per il suo modo innovativo di usare lo strumento. E’ stato uno dei primi a sperimentare la sovraincisione, in modo da creare sovrapposizioni di poliritmie di tipo africano. Anticipatore del free jazz, già lavorava sulla improvvisazione collettiva e sull’informale. Il suo insegnamento partiva dall’educazione dell’orecchio all’ascolto e ad analizzare la musica dei grandi solisti di jazz. La sua visione del jazz era vastissima, pianista dalle linee armoniche lunghe e spigolose di grande estensione e difficoltà poliritmiche.

Ha iniziato a studiare la batteria a cinque anni , giocando e allenandosi sulle pentole. In seguito è diventato ballerino professionista ed è tornato a suonare la batteria a 21 anni. Ha studiato musica a Praga e con Stu Martin a Berlino ed a Monaco. Ha iniziato la carriera nel 1962, ha suonato con i Jazz Clinic di Laco Decsi, con il SH-Quintet, con il Reduta Quintet, con Hans Koller, Mal Waldron, il Cellula Jazz di Praga, con Peter Skoumal, con Rudolf Dasek, con Laco Gerhardt. Ha preso parte a molte manifestazioni, ha lavorato alla radio ed alla TV, anche all’estero.

 

TROPEA JOHN (G)

New York. 7/1/1946.

Ha studiato privatamente con Sal Dalvador dal 1962 al 1964 e ha frequentato il Berklee School of Music. Ha esordito agli inizi degli anni ‘70 con il gruppo di Billy Cobham. Ha lavorato con Eumir Deodato dal 1972 al 1979, con Spyro Gyra, nel 1980 con Terumasa Hino, nel 1981 con Ron Carter, con Richard Tee, Tom Scott, l’orchestra di Chuck Mangione, Marvin Stamm ed il musicista pop Dr.John. Ha anche suonato e registrato con David Samborn, John Faddis, Ralph McDonald e Will Lee. Ha lavorato anche molto negli studi dove ha collaborato con artisti pop, Roberta Flack, Alice Cooper, James Brown e Paul Simon. Nel 1975 ha messo su un gruppo insieme al chitarrista David Spinozza.

Ha iniziato lo studio del violino per poi passare definitivamente al pianoforte. Ha frequentato per nove anni il Conservatorio di Nates e da autodidatta ha scoperto il jazz. Nel 1998 ha messo su il suo primo trio ed ha pubblicato il suo primo album nel 2000, anno nel quale ha vinto il Django d’Oro. Uno dei pianisti di jazz francesi più richiesti, ha duettato con Tom Harrell e con Brad Mehldau. Pianista dalla grande padronanza ritmica, padrone della tastiera, in grado di avere nelle sue interpretazioni una abbondanza di idee melodiche e molta fantasia in quelle armoniche, dal tocco molto limpido. Molto dipendente da Jarrett.

TROTMAN LLOYD, NELSON (B)

Boston, Massachusetts. 25/5/1923.

Ha debuttato nel 1941 con Joe Nevils. Ha suonato poi con Blanche Calloway. Nel 1945 si è trasferito a New York dove ha suonato con Eddie Heywood, con Hazel Scott, per poco tempo con Duke Ellington, con Pete Brown, con George James, con Edmond Hall al “Cafè Society” e con Wilburn DeParis. Nel 1948 è entrato nell’orchestra di Boyd Raeburn, nel 1950 ha suonato con Oscar Pettiford, nel 1951 con Johnny Hodges e poi con Sonny Dunham e Jerry Wald. E’ stato il musicista fisso negli studi della Atlantic e della Mercury. Nel 1959 ha partecipato al Festival di Newport con il gruppo di Red Allen. Ha inciso con Cecil Lloyd e Lawrence Brown.

Sin da piccolo si interessa di ogni strumento a percussione che gli capita tra le mani ed inizia a suonare in piccoli gruppi rock. Il primo ingaggio di una certa importanza lo ha entrando nel gruppo “Perception”. Suona con musicisti americani di passaggio come Mal Waldron, Ted Curson, Jaki Byard, con Joachin Kuhn. Attivo per diversi anni in gruppi pop e rock, collabora con Didier Lockwood (viol) nei “Surya”, con Christian Escoude, con Tania Maria, con Michel Portal, Bernard Lubat. va negli States e qui lavora con Benny Brunnell, con Jerry Goodman.

 

TROUP BOBBY ROBERT WILLIAMS. (P-VC)

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. 18/10/1918.

Cantante pianista e compositore affermatosi soprattutto come compositore. Ha iniziato a lavorare come ballerino in uno spettacolo per il quale aveva scritto la sua prima canzone. Nel 1941 ha collaborato con Tommy Dorsey, in seguito a Los Angeles ha messo su un suo trio. Le sue canzoni sono state interpretate dai grandi della canzone, come Route 66, lanciata da Nat King Cole. Ha collaborato anche con Count Basie e si è dedicato molto ad accompagnare sua moglie la cantante ed attrice Julie London nelle varie tournée. Cantante dalla voce soffice, confidenziale, sofisticata, tra il serio ed il faceto. Ha registrato spesso con gruppi della West Coast.

TROVAJOLI ARMANDO (P)

Roma, Italia. 2/9/1917.

Dopo aver studiato per dieci anni il pianoforte, a sedici anni ha cominciato a suonare in gruppi da ballo nei quali però era sempre presente il jazz. Nel 1937 ha avuto l’opportunità di entrare nell’orchestra di Benny Carter per una tournée europea, ma non gli venne concesso il visto. Nel 1944 ha messo su un gruppo swing con il quale ha suonato per gli alleati. Ha ripreso a studiare armonia e composizione e si è diplomato in pianoforte al Conservatorio di Roma. Ha partecipato al Festival di Parigi in trio con Kramer e Cuppini, nel 1950 ha inciso in trio con Franco Cerri al basso e Paolo Tagliaferri alla batteria. Ha collaborato con con Roberto Nicolosi e Gil Cuppini. Ha fatto delle jam session con Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, Toots Thielemans e Flavio Ambrosetti. Ha diretto l’orchestra della RAI, nella quale ha riunito il fior fiore dei musicisti di jazz italiani, interpretando con essa arrangiamenti di Bill Russo, Bill Smith e Bill Holman. Ha iniziato a comporre colonne sonore per film, attività che in seguito sarà la prevalente. Ha scritto per le commedie musicali di Garinei e Giovannini delle musiche splendide. Pioniere del jazz italiano, ottimo pianista, dal fraseggio chiaro ed elegante, pieno di swing sottile ed efficace, la stessa raffinata eleganza che ha messo nelle sue composizioni ed orchestrazioni. E’ stato il primo e forse l’unico a dirigere una vera e propria big band jazz italiana ed ha introdotto il jazz nel cinema.
