MARTINO PAT (G)

Philadelphia, 25/8/1944. – 1/11/2021

Il padre cantante e chitarrista allievo di Eddie Lang, lo ha iniziato alla musica e lo ha incoraggiato a prendere a undici anni lezioni di chitarra. A sedici anni “Pat The Kid” come viene chiamato, ha debuttato in gruppi di R&B. E’ entrato nell’orchestra di Lloyd Prince, ha suonato con Kenny Dorham, con Jimmy Heath. Nel 1967 ha inciso il suo primo disco di jazz, ha lavorato con John Handy sempre nel 1967. Ha studiato musica e cultura indiana, si è interessato di strumenti elettronici che manovra con grande padronanza. Ha collaborato con diversi organisti come Jack McDuff, Richard Groove Holmes, Trudy Pitts, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Don Patterson, con diversi dei quali ha anche inciso dei dischi. Ha suonato inoltre anche con Charles McPherson, Eric Kloss, Sonny Stitt, Woody Herman, Milt Jackson. In seguito ha inciso con Bobby Rose, con Richard Davis, con Billy Higgins. Alla metà degli anni ’70 è stato colpito da disturbi nervosi, che lo hanno costretto nel 1977 a lasciare l’attività. Si è trasferito a Los Angeles dove si è dedicato all’insegnamento presso il “Guitar Institute of Technology”. Nel 1980 è stato costretto a sottoporsi ad un intervento al cervello, per un tumore, è restato in coma ed al risveglio non ha ricordato più nulla, nemmeno il nome della madre. Nel 1983 è stato convinto da amici a usare quella chitarra che egli teneva in casa. Nel 1987 è ritornato alla musica con l’album ”The Return of Pat Martino”. Dopo la perdita dei genitori solo nel 1993 è tornato alla musica a tempo pieno. Molto amico di Wess Montgomery, al quale ha dedicato due album, è anche molto vicino al suo stile, che ha sviluppato in un suo stile.

Dopo aver studiato al Conservatorio Nazionale di Lisbona e nei corsi di studi presso gli Hot Club de Portugal, ha insegnato negli stessi. Ha composto musica per balletti, per il cinema. Ha avuto un suo gruppo di jazz ed ha accompagnato la cantante Maria Joao.

MARTINS FERRY. (CL-ST)

Ohio. 14/1/1928.

Musicista di origine ungherese, ha debuttato in piccoli gruppi di suoi connazionali, suonando musica tzigana e ha fatto parte della Symphonic Balalaika Orchestra, una orchestra locale. In seguito si è accostato al jazz, ha frequentato la Manhattan School of Music con Lennie Tristano. Ha suona nella Air Force Band, poi è entrato nel gruppo di Danny Barker e nella Red Onion Band, con la quale ha inciso. Nel 1966 è entrato negli All Stars di Louis Armstrong, ha suona anche con Wild Bill Davison, con Art Hodes, John Eaton, Warren Vache e dal 1980 è stato per molto tempo protagonista al ”Jimmy Ryan’s” di New York. Clarinettista dalla ottima tecnica, ma dalla scarsa vena interpretativa.

MARTINS ZEDUARDO (G-VC)

Macacu, Brasile.

Chitarrista cantante poco noto, invece è un ottimo chitarrista ed anche un cantante dalla voce ricca di accenti. Strumentista fantasioso, che ha assimilato la cultura musicale europea ma senza perdere il legame folkloristico del suo paese. Voce che guarda al jazz reinventando un originale scat, molto ritmico. Artista che trasmette attraverso le sue composizioni delle emozioni intense, una musica che trasmette una miscela di tristezza e umorismo.

Ha iniziato a suonare a Londra nel 1955 in gruppi di stile tradizionale. Ha suonato con Keith Smith uno dei leader del revival inglese. Nel 1959 ha messo su un suo gruppo con il quale ha inciso molti dischi. Nel 1961 è andato a New Orleans, che sarà la sua seconda patria, ha seguito dei corsi di batteria e ha suonato ed inciso con il fior fiore dei musicisti della città, George Lewis, Kid Thomas, Louis Nelson, Captain John Handy, Kid Sheik, Adrew Morgan. Ha organizzato delle tournée europee con l’etichetta ”New Orleans Presentations Inc”. Nel 1970 si è trasferito in California, dove ha radunato tutti i vecchi protagonisti partners di Kid Ory sotto l’egida ”Living Legend” e con loro ha registrato ed ha fatto molte tournée nel mondo. Ha registrato anche con la Bovisa New Orleans Jazz band.

Ha debuttato nel gruppo di Takeshiro Honda nel 1969. Ha lavorato con la cantante Mieko Hirota, ha suonato nel quintetto di Masabumi Kikushi. E’ stato due anni negli Stati Uniti dove si è esibito con un certo successo. Tornato in patria nel 1975 è tornato nel gruppo di Honda o a diretto un suo gruppo.

MARUYAMA SHIGEO. (VC)

Niigata, Giappone. 22/6/1951.

Ha iniziato a cantare mentre studia alla Waseda University di Tokyo e nel 1974 ha studiato canto jazz e chitarra con Kazumi Watanabe e nel 1976 mentre ha iniziato la carriera nel trio di Norio Kotani. Ha in seguito ha lavorato con il batterista Ryojiro Furusawa, con Shigeharu Mukai e Takashi Miyasaka. Nel 1977 ha avuto un suo gruppo ed altri con il nome di Duikyoza. Nel 1990 ha registrato con il trio di Norman Simmons a New York, è stata con Jon Hendricks. Si è distinta per la maniera di vocalizzare sulla base della musica tradizionale giapponese. Ha composto musica, insegna, traduce dall’inglese ed insegna teoria ed improvvisazione jazz alla Nippon University.

Sassofonista poco noto in Italia. E’ stato allievo di Lennie Tristano e di Warne Marsh. Musicista di un certo livello e dallo stile abbastanza personale. Sassofonista cool, egli è riuscito a far convivere il disteso distacco del cool e la aggressività e la disinvoltura dell’hard bop. Nel primo caso i riferimenti a Stan Getz sono espliciti, nel secondo le influenze sono per Dexter Gordon e per Sonny Rollins.

Famoso comico americano, insieme ai fratelli ha formato un trio comico che ha avuto un grande successo negli anni’40. Egli amava gestire dei gruppi di jazz, nei quali hanno lavorato molti musicisti di primo piano come Ben Pollack e Mel Tormè.

MARX DICK, RICHARD H. (P)

Chicago, Illinois. 12/4/1924. – New York. 12/8/1997.

Ha iniziato a suonare da professionista nei nightclub di Chicago. Nel 1950 ha accompagnato la cantante Helen Merrill ed ha pubblicato diversi album. Dal 1960 ha lavorato nella pubblicità e nel 1986 si è trasferito a Los Angeles dove ha lavorato per il cinema.

Ha studiato il pianoforte dall’età di sei anni, è stato alunno di Pablo Cazals. Ha iniziato a lavorare in locali modesti ed ha scoperto il jazz attraverso l’ascolto di Coleman Hawkins e di Charlie Parker. Si trasferisce Parigi dove ha incontrato e fatto amicizia con il chitarrista Joseph Dejean, ha suonato nei club ed infine ha messo su un trio con Aldo Romano e Francois Jenny Clark. Nel 1976 ha inciso in duo con Cesarius Alvin e per un’altra incisione si è aggiunto Daniel Humair. Ha partecipato a diverse manifestazioni, concerti e Festival. Pianista dallo stile elegante e raffinato in sintonia con il suo tempo, anche se al contrario di altri suoi colleghi egli ha una sua prospettiva originale e personale sia nel pianismo che nella scelta stilistica.

Musicista americana di origini giapponesi, sposata al trombonista George Lewis. Molte volte si è esibita con il koto, uni strumento tipico giapponese. Musicista molto creativa che combina la sua tecnica improvvisativa alla sensibilità orientale. Ha scritto opere di ampio respiro per balletti, che lo hanno portato ad essere uno dei musicisti più interessanti della scena improvvisativa di San Francisco.

MASEKELA HUGH (TP)

Ha preso lezioni di tromba dal direttore della Band Municipale di Johannesburg. Ha studiato anche il sassofono e il trombone ed ha appreso il jazz dai dischi che arrivano dagli U.S.A. Con Jonas Gwanga e Dollar Brand ha messo su i “Jazz Epistles”con i quali ha registrato il primo LP di jazz del South Africa. Ha lasciato l’Africa per andare a Londra, qui ha studiato per qualche mese alla Guildhall e quindi è andato a studiare alla Manhattan School of Music di New York. Si è stabilito in California dove ha messo mette su la Chisa Records, con la quale ha registrato diversi album. Anche vivendo e suonando nella società americana non ha dimenticato le sue radici. Nel 1972 è andato a Londra ed insieme a Larry Willis, Eddie Gomez, Makhaya Ntshoko e con Dudu Pukwana, da poco arrivato dal South Africa, hanno inciso un ottimo album. Ha fatto una tournée africana, poi è tornato in California dove ha inciso diversi album che hanno avuto però uno scarso successo. Nel 1980 è tornato in Africa, dove ha soggiornato prima nello Zimbawe e nel 1982 nel Botswana. Il suo concerto ”Going Home” dato insieme alla moglie la cantante Mirian Makeba ha coinvolto 35.000 spettatori.

Nel 1947 ha inciso con Gil Cuppini. Ha svolto quasi tutta la sua attività nelle orchestre della Radio e della Televisione salvo i brevi periodi che ha diretto dei suoi gruppi. MASON NORMAN (ST-TP-CL)

Miami, Florida. 1895.

Nato in una famiglia di musicisti, è cresciuto alla Bahamas e presto impara a suonare la tromba che poi alternerà con il clarinetto ed il sax tenore. Debutta con il Rabbit Foot Minstrel Show, entra poi nell’orchestra di Fate Marable. Nel 1922 lavora con la Wispering Gold Band di Ed Allen. Torna con Marable con il quale nel 1924 incide una serie di dischi storici. In seguito lavora con diversi gruppi che agiscono sui battelli per St.Louis. Negli anni ’50 lo troviamo a St.Louis, con i Rampart Rablers di Joe Smith e come clarinettista per diversi anni con Singleton Palmer.

MASON PHIL (CORN)

Londra, Inghilterra. 10/4/1940.

Dopo aver studiato a Dublino, nel 1966 è tornato a Londra dove ha suonato con la “Eric Silk’s Southern Jazz Band” sino al 1969. Nel 1970 è entrato nella “Max Collie’s Rhyhtm Aces”. In seguito ha svolto attività freelance e nel 1992 ha messo su la sua “New Orleans All Stars”. In seguito si è stabilito in Scozia nell’Isola di Bute.

MASON ROD (TP-CORN)

Plymouth, Devon, Gran Bretagna. 28/9/1940.

Ha debuttato con Cy Laurie nel 1959 e nel 1962 ha suonato con Monty Sunshine, con il quale è rimasto sino al 1966 epoca nella quale ha dovuto sospendere l’attività perché colpito da paralisi ai nervi delle labbra. Dopo cure appropriate ha ripreso l’attività nel 1970 suonando con l’orchestra di Acker Bill. Nel 1970 ha messo su una sua orchestra che ha ottenuto molto successo in Europa ed ha inciso diversi dischi che hanno raccolto il favore del pubblico. Nel 1980 si è unito alla “Dutch Swing College Band” e nel 1985 è il bandleader più richiesto d’Europa. Nel 1990 ha avuto altro successo con i suoi “Hot Five”.

Il suo primo strumento è stato l’armonica, ma sua madre preferisce che suonasse la chitarra, mentre lui pensa ad uno strumento a fiato. Ha continuato con l’armonica e mentre vive a Matamoras una piccola cittadina della Pennsylvania baratta la sua armonica con il sax alto di un amico ed inizia il suo percorso musicale. Nel 1966 ha completato gli studi alla De Paul University. Musicista che si è ben impegnato sia come solista di clarinetto e sax alto e sia come insegnante.

Il gruppo si ripropone di prendere in esame le musiche che sebbene lontane nel tempo conservano tutta la loro bruciante attualità, come proprio quelle che eseguivano il gruppo di cui hanno preso il nome. Esperimento riuscito, la loro musica, anche se con la freddezza dei solisti nordici, risulta stimolante e vivissima.

MASSEY CAL CALVIN (TP)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 11/1/1927. – New York. 25/10/1972.

Ha dovuto fare diversi lavori per pagarsi gli studi, ha frequentato il Pitt Music Institute e ha rifiutato di iniziare a suonare per non distrarsi dallo studio. E’ costretto a lavorare con Jay Mc Shann per necessità ed ha tentato il lavoro freelance senza risultati apprezzabili. Ha conosciuto John Coltrane che lo ha ospitato e che lo ha seguito per molti anni ed insieme a lui ha suonato nella grande band di Jimmy Heath. Ha poi suonato con Red Garland, Philly Joe Jones, Billy Holiday, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Max Roach, Art Blakey, con Eddie Winson nel 1952, nel 1956 con Jimmy Garrison, poi con C. Sharpe, McCoy Tyner, Albert Heath, con il batterista Robert Crowder, ha accompagnato la cantante Rosemary Davis. Ha messo su un gruppo nel quale saltuariamente ha ospitato anche Coltrane. In seguito ha preferito dedicarsi più all’attività di organizzatore di concerti, senza però lasciare di suonare. Ha collaborato con B. B. King, George Shearing, con Archie Shepp nel 1969, insieme al tastierista Romulus Franceschini ha diretto la”Ro-Mas Orchestra. Ha svolto anche attività di cantante, in questo ruolo è stato soprannominato ”Dark Sinatra”. Si è distinto anche come originale compositore di brani scritti per Charlie Parker, John Coltrane e Jackie McLean.

Figlio di Cal Massey, è cresciuto a New York ed ha iniziato presto a suonare nel gruppo del padre ed in un gruppo di latin jazz in televisione. Dal 1970 ha iniziato a lavorare freelance, ha registrato con Carlos Garnett, ha suonato con la ”Decoding Society”di Ronald Shannon Jackson, con il qual è andato anche al Festival Internazionale di Moers nel 1981. Nel 1984 ha fatto parte dell’Arkestra di Sun Ra, poi ha suonato con Jemeel Moodoc, con la big band MUNY (Music under New York) In seguito la sua attività si è concentrata a New York, dove ha lavorato anche con il padre. Ha anche collaborato con Roy Campbell. Musicista dell’avanguardia più giovane del free funk..

I Musicisti dimostrano di sentirsi a proprio agio nell’interpretare questo filone musicale e lo fanno con molta disinvoltura e estro.
